I remember watching Aliens 3, Gladiator, and Mission Impossible II here.

This place has certainly shown its age. The theater is like an old dude who no longer cares about his appearance: popcorn everywhere, boards cover up the outside ticket booth, the seat squeaks like the Tin Man, and their only arcade game is Pong (I may be exaggerating a bit).

Okay, yes this place might be a little outdated but it sure is cheap.  Please don't think Magic Johnson type of ghetto.  I think it is run by a family.  The movies are the ones that for the most part are leaving other theaters, at least a month old.  Since I am about a month behind, this doesn't bother me at all.  The staff is very attentive.  The people in front of me at the snack line were taking forever so someone in the back came out to help and opened an extra cash register.  I loved that they were actually aware of the costumers and took care of us.

    Cheap movies
    Free parking
    A great staff
    Love it!

Unfortunately this theater is about to close.  The owners of the building are going to rebuild and the operators of this multi-screen theater must be out by the end of November 2011.

Free three hour validated parking downstairs during the week ... no validation needed on weekends.

Tickets are $8 but only $6 for films starting before 5 PM ... even on weekends.

This is a "last chance theater" showing films before they leave the Los Angeles area.  It is run down with different issues for each screen (#6 has a white spot area on the screen which can show up for certain films/#5 leaks when it rains) with some of the chairs being broken down or thin walls.  But this is a great place to catch those films you missed and a place to see the movies not worth paying top dollar for.

An easy in and out theater and the last location on the Westside for discount films.

Good bang for your buck...I didn't realize movie tickets had gotten so pricey!!  I guess I'm dating myself but I remember when student tickets were $4.75, but I guess $8/ticket is cheap nowadays.

If you want to see a movie that's been out a while, I'd come here...the concessions are pretty basic with popcorn and soda but I usually bring my own goodies into a movie theater anyways.  Besides, this is close to downtown culver city so you can grab a drink or bite before/after movie.

A-ok. The highlight is that tickets are a bit cheaper ($8), but the theater is older, screens are smaller, and you can catch a movie on it's way out since some are older runs. There is a parking lot right next door which has validation and is open and free on the weekend.

The popcorn was mostly tiny crumbles instead of full kernels, and there is a butter station so you can add butter.

It did the trick for a Saturday night movie but lacks many of the perks of a mega theater.

    $6 for a matinee ticket
$75 to get the rat bite irrigated and a tetanus shot
    $10 for antibiotics

Next time I'll go to AMC.

Something ran across my foot today in theater 6. I felt a sharp pain and saw that the skin was broken. The employees at the concession stand informed me that they have rats in the theater, but the traps don't work. I called the county health department and was told that rodents don't carry rabies, so they can't do anything. Do yourself a favor, if you find yourself at this theater, wear steel-toed boots and avoid the food and beverages.

A dump. The place is filthy. The projection is dim. The sound was horribly skewed towards the right channel, and the half`wit projectionist could not fix it. I see that it is about to close. Good riddance.

The reviews of this place are annoying as hell. "Waaaaaaaahhhhhhh, it's sooooo ghetto!!!!!"

    Shut it!

Yes it's a little old school but you get what you pay for, all the pissing and moaning about this theater is ridiculous. For everyone who says they'd rather pay double the price to go to a nicer theater, go for it. No one is making you come here.

Sometimes there is a movie that I want to see in the theater, but it's not a 3D flick or crazy with the special effects. Maybe a drama I want to see on the big screen, but I don't need super-ultra-mega surround sound either. In cases like this where it's about the content and not the visual/sound quality, Culver Plaza Theatres is perfect. Why would I want to pay $15 to see a documentary at an AMC? Screw that noise, I'll pay half the price and have most of the theater to myself here.

I could understand the bitching if CPT was trying to charge the same as the monster theaters out there, but they aren't. They keep it real with cheap prices, and for me that works juuuuuuuuuuust fine. Plus they hosted the Pan African Film Festival this year which was dope!

    Word.

I'm going to remember this place as the spot where Ben G tricked me into coming here to watch Blue Valentine.  Horrible movie by the way.  Too depressing.

The ticket prices here were only $8.  The theater wasn't too crowded.  The seats were the old style ones.  Kind of the same ones as the one in Marina del Rey.  They were in bad shape, they were a little dirty.  But that doesn't matter.  It's cheap to get in!

The concession worker also was the ticket seller.  BTW, don't expect too many frou frou stuff when you go here.

The place was easy to get in and out of.  No problems finding parking.  There's a parking structure you can park in below the movie theater.

    I'd come back here.

    Pros:
    - $6 for a matinee ticket
    - They play the movies that you should have seen 2 months ago when they were playing in theaters nation-wide.
    - Free parking for 3 hours with a ticket stub validation.
    - Located on the same block as some delicious food (Choppe Choppe)!
    - Friendly staff

    Cons:
    - Awful sound quality
    - Awful picture quality
    - Sound and light pollution from outside the theater
    - These films have been played so many times that there are some strange color distortions in the images.
    - Concessions that have been sitting in the display cases for so long that they've been bleached by the sun.

    Shudder.

Remember those theatres in NYC circa 1987 (before Giuliani "cleaned up" Times Square, where you (not I... I was 7!) could get a quickie in a dimly lit nudie theatre? That place has moved to downtown Culver City.

Being the only place in town playing Black Swan, my old friend Milo J and I decided to brave this horrible winter-y weather (I think we both left Jersey in part to AVOID sleet) and just see this horrifying, cracked out movie (that was actually quite good. Don't miss it, but also... don't miss the point).

First, we could have easily walked right in without tickets. The employees didn't seem to give a rat's ass. But because I'm such a nice girl, I paid. $16!! I could have gone to the Landmark for that price! Then, there was the odd-tasting Pepsi. Milo didn't approve. I didn't think it was that bad, having last had Pepsi around the same time of Times Square's nudie hay day. I prefer my Mexican Coca Cola.

The theatre was never cleaned after the previous showing and I think I actually mentioned that I may run down to the ladies' and grab some of those toilet seat covers for us to sit on. That's how gross the seats were. My ass stuck a little when I tried to get up. Uuuuuuughh.

What is good about this place? No teenagers. Only old people. So no one will bother you. But keep your eyes on the screen because you may inadvertently see some stuff you don't want to see old people do... if you know what I mean from my Times reference.

    Also... free parking!

Final comments: Unless I'm suddenly struck with the urge to voyeur old people watch Black Swan again, or they bring down ticket prices by say, $5 a piece, I don't think I'll go back.

Want a discounted movie?  Want that old homey feeling of a run-down local theater?  Want disgruntled/bored/high/unresponsive customer service.

    You got it!

Going to this movie theater is like a happy trip back in time before the streamlined, sanitized movie theater chains.  Want the movie to start?  Better ask someone!  Dying from the heat?  Better tell someone to turn on the air!

This theater is dirty, creaky, often partially empty, and someone is always having a clam bake in a back room.

That plus the discounted price, what's not to love?

Filthy, upstairs level has no working AC & staff is rude as hell. If you like sitting on nasty, stained up seats, walking on stained carpets with old popcorn smashed into it... And, filthy dirty windows in the lobby that you can't even see through, then this is your kind of place.

Honestly, even the return change(bills) we received was full of some type of sticky syrup on them.

The snack bar has 99 cent store snacks for quadruple the price.YUCK!

This theater was built about fifteen years ago in the hopes of revitalizing a dead Culver City.  It didn't work.  They built it inexplicably on the side of the street away from traffic, made the building an ugly white blob, and charged for parking in their tiny, ridiculously designed lot.

Ten years later, Culver City was revived by the Pacific Theater built down the street and this place was sold from Mann to an independent owner.  The prices used to be cheap but they've recently gone up to $8 for a non-matinee ticket.  There's no student discount but seniors can get in for cheaper (and they do in small droves).

    You should expect:
dirty carpets that haven't been cleaned since the theater was originally built
that the guy who sells you your tickets will get you your popcorn and might possibly starting the projector for your show
half the urinals will be out of order
one row of theater seats will be out of order

    You should NOT expect:
your movie to start on time
your theater to have been cleaned before (or after) your show

None of these things mattered when the theater was $6 but at $8 (when Pacific Theater group discount tickets are $6.50) I don't think I will be going back here unless a) they're they only theater in town showing a particular movie (and they sometimes are) or b) I want to avoid crowds of people under 50.

This supposedly has older movies, but their movies aren't that old because I just saw "The Town" here this past weekend and I think its still playing in regular theaters too.

The theater definitely older, more rundown and not very well maintained.  For example, after 2 hours my feet were literally stuck to the ground due to the sticky spilled sodas and snacks on the ground (and I wasn't the one doing the spilling so it must have been there for a while).

However, it is cheap!  $7 for a ticket on a weekend isn't bad at all these days.  So if you don't let the other stuff bug you, then this could be a great alternative.

It looks like a popcorn hurricane blasted through this place.

I didn't know it was a discount theater since they're playing 'Black Swan' (as of 1/2/2011) and to me that's pretty new whereas discount places normally show older films. Well, it was pretty blatant that it was after stepping foot inside. You know a movie theater's floors are usually sticky? Imagine that stickyness EVERYWHERE on the walls, on the carpet, and probably on the movie theather employees themselves.

But how can I complain? It was $8 for a rather new movie, there is a concession stand, and everything went without a hitch. Don't take a date here unless you plan on having a one nighter ('Toot it and Boot it' as we say in the radio biz), but go with friends or when you're in between paychecks and you'll be solid.

This theater needs an extreme makeover. Okay, yea, the tickets are $8... but I would rather pay the extra few bucks to get 1) comfortable seating 2) clear picture 3) good sound 4) employees who don't act like zombies 5) clean facilities...etc.

I used to come here as a kid, and I guess over time this theater has lost it's luster. This theater tends to play movies that are almost out of the theaters.. but I would rather wait for them to go on DVD.

It's time for this theater to spend a little bit of money making the place more comfortable.

    Liked:
    - Murals on the inside of the theater
    - Cozzy feel
    - Cheap tickets
    - Spacious seating (rarely fills up because they play movies that have been out for a while)
    - Walking distance to great restaurants
    - Parking is easy
    - Movies I've watched here: Hangover, Defiance, Despicable Me, many more.
    - Witch house down the street from the theater (they have turtles!)

    Disliked:
    - Witch house down the street from the theater (I get chills when I walk by)

    Note:
    - Great place for a date, group, or by yourself. No self-conscious teenagers around (who do stupid things like I use to do) to ruin the experience (they're all down the street at the Pacific Stadium 12 Theater).

The big thing going for this theater is that it's cheap. Matinees are 6 bucks.

However, this ain't no Arclight. Restrooms were in poor condition. The theater in which we watch The Social Network was FREEZING.

If you want to catch movies months after their released but yet aren't on DVD yet, and if you want to get away from the teeny-boppers, then yes go here. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

This place is a bit of a dive. Normally, I like this sort of divey charm as compared to the more common multi-plexes, but this place was a bit of a disappointment. The only pro is that it does tend to play more indie films and films that have been out for awhile. I went because it was the closest theater that was playing 127 hours. I caught a week day matinee and the place clearly had not been cleaned the night before as popcorn was still on the floor. When I walked into the theater it was pitch black and the film started 10 minutes late. To make matter worse, the popcorn was rather cold and possibly was also from the night before.

My recommendation is go to this theater only if it is the only one playing a film that you want to see. As far as matinee's $6 is the norm, so there really was no saving there.

This theater has really gone downhill since it has come under new ownership.  In the past I would have given this place 4 stars for being such a bargain.  Not so anymore.  Whoever owns it now is apparently squeezing every last dime out of the place and just running it into the ground.

If this theater was a car, it would be like the very first one I owned:  a broke @$$ hoopty that had a habit of crapping out on me at the worst possible times.

Sound quality is very poor.  GF and I saw "Date Night" here tonight and the sound kept cutting out of the left speakers.

Projection quality was also poor given that the picture was out of focus at first.  It looked like the projectionist was jostling the projector to make it work--just like my old hoopty.

The worst part is that this place is filthy.  Smashed popcorn litters the stairs. The carpet is worn and dirty.  There is a musty smell to the place.   When we sat down tonight there were napkins, wrappers and other junk stuffed in the cupholders.  The restrooms are not well kept and many of the urinals and toilets have had "out of order" signs on them for months.

It's like they don't even bother to clean the place any more.

At $7 per ticket the price has gone up from the previously bargain-licious price of $5, which is confusing since they are apparently not putting anything into it.

When compared to a nice, clean, modern theater's ticket price of $10-$12 it's no longer such a good deal and it's becoming harder and harder to justify going here anymore.

I remember going to this theater all the time when I was a teenager. It was clean and well managed back then.  I knew when the the mega plex was built right down the street, the fate of my once reliable Culver Plaza Theatres was in question.  It had been years since I've been back to Culver Plaza, but this was the closest theater playing Black Swan.

Pros:  The ticket was cheap.  I was able to find parking on the street pretty easily (I imagine everyone is down the street at the larger, cleaner theater)

Cons:  The ticket/concession line wasn't run efficiently.   The place is on the run down side).

The management here could really turn this place into something if they did some maintenance on the facility and really marketed this place as an alternative to the mega plex right down the street.  Perhaps they should put me in charge.

Loving this theater reminds me that I am indeed a Chinese chick who had bargain-lovesickness mainlined into my bloodstream from my mother, when I was in utero.

    Yes, it's an old theater.
Yes, the carpet has seen LOTS O better days.
Yes, the box office is closed - it takes less employees to sell tickets at the same time they help you with concessions.
Yes, the bathrooms DO feel eerie with the dim lighting.
Yes, they often do play Indian feature films.
Yes, it takes a while for movies to get to this theater.
No, they don't always have toilet paper in the stalls.
No, the concessions stand upstairs is NOT usually open.
No, they don't clean the theaters in between movies (read note about requiring less employees above).
No, the seats don't have fancy rocking motion or arms that you can put up so you can cuddle closer with your significant other.

    But.............

YES, they do have ample, free parking!
YES, they do show SIX movies at a time!
YES, they ARE currently showing several Academy-nominated movies!
YES, the movie tickets are SEVEN DOLLARS EACH!
YES, you CAN sneak into more than one theater and see back-to-back movies!
YES, you will ALWAYS find a good seat in these never-packed theaters - even 5 minutes before showtime!
YES, they sometimes sell SAMOSAS at the concessions stand! (I've never tried them, are they good?)

For all those YESes, I love you Culver Plaza Theater - and I hope you'll stay around for as long as I want you to : ).

The other reviews here are spot on, but I was secretly thrilled by the comfortable diveyness of this theater.  Sure, the picture quality was the equivalent of a non-HD, non-flat panel TV and there was a weird light spot on the screen, but it made me kind of nostalgic for days when I didn't have to fight 100 other people to reserve my seats when buying tickets online for $20 a pop or be assaulted by the lights and smells of a gourmet snack concessions stand (there is a time and place for those luxuries, and this is not it).  I also find this part of Culver City charming because parking is not insane (I'm looking at you, AMC Century City) and there are a ton of awesome restaurants/bars to hang out at while waiting for your movie to start or to hit up afterwards (hello, Honey Kettle Fried Chicken and Ford's Filling Station).  Okay, so some of the seats are busted and the bathrooms need a bit of maintenance.  This is a great low key place to catch that movie you missed during its first run.

Seeing the last review makes me wonder why THAT is the reason why this place is so awful. Perhaps it used to be good, but because they're about to close, they've given up on caring. I give this theatre 2 stars because it IS cheap and the DO play movies. But beyond that, they don't ever sweep/clean, there is 5-10 minutes between each movie (because they don't clean in between showings) and sometimes that 5-10 minutes isn't timed appropriately and you end up waiting 5-10 minutes past the time it was supposed to be playing. It's grundgy, the sound is bad....I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're on a date, or looking for a positive movie experience.

I like the idea of a neighborhood theater, that's not a bustling money-maker like AMC theaters, et cetera. And I'd say that Culver Plaza falls somewhere between those blockbuster giants and your independent art theater.

That said, Culver Plaza definitely needs a little love. It would be a great place to frequent if it weren't so run-down.

I'm sure I did see it at its worst: it was raining this particular evening, and there happen to be a leak in the ceiling, dripping water into a professionally balanced bucket in the middle of Theater 5.

But it wasn't terrible - I've seen theaters in much worse condition. So I'd say Culver Plaza has something of a homely feel. But, yeah - could definitely use a little more love.

Where the hell else can you see a movie (and not just a matinee) for $6? No place, that's where.

Uncrowded, free parking (well, it's validated for three hours, but also the parking attendant has a tendency to wander off and then you can just drive away), and fairly comfy seats.

Only drawbacks: 1) cash only for ticket purchase (but you can pay for concessions with credit cards) and 2) they serve Pepsi instead of Coke. And also like 30 miles from my house.

*** ghetto, ghetto, ghetto ... but a great deal as well. ***

a buddy from Chicago sent me an email earlier today.
it promoted the opening of a movie in which he stars.
the email said the film will show in LA locations and
"the first weekend is the  MOST  important in terms
of how long a film stays in the theatres".  so i went.

    about this theater:
garage/lot parking is free for 3 hours with validation.
matinee shows are just $5, and $1.50 for a hot dog.
don't like your show? jump to another, no one cares.
share your movie with just one, or two, other people.
Culver Plaza is like having an exclusive screening. ;)
    hard to complain when $8 = movie + prkg + 2 dogs!!!

    about the film:
so how was my buddy's film debut in "Irene in Time"?
he plays a love interest in a chick flick.  he did well but ...

*** let's just say the film didn't go "straight" to dvd, yay! ***

The ladies talking amongst themselves before the show said that this used to be THE THEATER to go to back in the day (apparently one of them saw Titanic here)**. Now it plays $3 matinees and $6 evening shows. me and the boyfriend caught a flick for the price of one mega-plex ticket. Whooot!

the seats are more comfortable than Fairfax cinemas and its closer too (well, for us anyway). We went on a friday night and it wasn't crowded at all. I saw people walking around with HUGE buckets of popcorn and there's plenty of candy options if you're into that sort of thing. it's not super posh and going to the last show of the night there was left behind cups and popcorn buckets in some aisles but I'm not gonna knock 'em - its the cheapy theater and I didn't have to throw elbows to get a choice seat or wait in a long azz line.

As previous reviewers mentioned : free parking in the garages w/ validation (that would be your ticket stub, so hang on to it), or street parking in the evening. there's plenty of yumtastic places to eat nearby. it's downtown culver, its adorable and who doesn't luv a bargain theater? (answer: nazis)

**i tend to lump everything that took place over 5 years ago into "back in the day".  Titanic seems a long time ago for me, but if you feel it was just yesterday i will happily smile and nod.

Dirtiest movie theater I've ever been.
Seats have stains, there are cups, popcorn and chocolate wrapping everywhere.
But it's cheap. I payed $5 bucks to watch a movie at noon.
Parking is on the side, show your movie ticket to the parking attendants and pay nada!

Who wouldn't love a discount movie theater? $5 matinees yo! I wouldn't have paid $10 to watch The Hangover...hell no. But $5, yes.
This place is cozy and has that old school vibe. One thing that needs updating though, their seats.

After all the years working in Culver City, I finally decided take the family to this tiny little theatre near downtown Culver City.

Whoa! It's ok, nothing to get too excited about. People jumping from theatre to theatre and no one said a word. It was too noisy especially for Culver City.

    You're not missing anything here!!

Remember when movie theatre tickets were about $4.50? You would walk in during a hot summer day, grab an endless pit of popcorn and chug your coke or blue slurpie. Bouncing from movie to movie, you felt uninhibited while the 6+hours of images killed your brain cells. When you tired of those shenanigans, you continued on to ms. pacman or whatever pinball machine was open.

You can have this back! You just have to be a bit patient. They usually play releases that have been out for a couple of weeks, and don't come early because you might catch a bit of the movie you're gonna be watching in 10 minutes. Yep, they run them that close together.

There are games when you enter, plus a change machine, so play to your hearts content. They do take cards now, so spend away!

It's cheap. It's close. They have ms pacman and starwars pinball!

    I'm am sooo there.....

7 bucks at night ! Free parking

It's my neighborhood $3.00 theater (before 5pm). That hands down gets 5 stars. And it's only $6.00 after 5.

Yeah - it's a little "unkempt", but whatever, I've been in worse and paid more. They have a concession stand and I've never gotten in trouble for blatantly bringing in coffee from Starbucks. And nothing makes me happier on a gloomy Sunday afternoon than coffee and a good indie film that I only had to pay $3 to see.

Word to the wise: pay for your tickets at the concession stand, they only take cash (near as I can tell) and your ticket stub is your validation for parking. Oh, and avoid the bathrooms, they are pretty gross.

OK, one star off for the lousy popcorn, but listen to this:  $3.50 matinees for  all shows before 5pm!  What is this, 1976?  $3.50 for children and seniors, $6 after 5pm.  Hot dogs for a buck!  Hot damn!

Saw Lust, Caution there today in a nice sized theatre, so I'll vouch for the fact that they play first-run films (Love in the Time of Cholera was also playing and it just opened), so this isn't some sticky, flea-infested, what's-that-smell kind of cheap movie house, it's a dang good place with dang good movies cheaper than any place I've seen in years.  And, this being Culver City, they've got some nice murals and great big black and white photos of classic films on the walls of the lobby.

Shhh...tell your best friends so that these folks will see that their scheme to sell cheap tix will pay off, but don't tell everyone...don't want to ruin a good thing, right?

I made a lot of trips to this theatre this past year to see the Oscar noms (The Social Network, 127 Hours, True Grit, Winters Bone, and The King's Speech) for the 83rd Academy Awards show. The Culver Plaza offers a good amount of indies to see from time-to-time.

The makings of a good theatre according to Lori K.:
    -Free parking
    -Conveniently located parking
    -Cheap tickets
-Short walk from ticket booth to theatre
    -Good ventilation
    -No crowds
    -Reasonably priced concessions
-A good selection of mainstream, indie and foreign flicks.

This theatre hit 7/8 of the items on my list!

We were there for a Bollywood film which cost us $9.50. Regular movies are $7 and matinees $5. Tickets are sold inside at the concession stand.

Since it was our first time there we had arrived a bit early to allow ourselves enough time to locate the theatre, find parking, stand in line for tickets etc. Since we had no problem doing any of the aforementioned we had time to kill so our choices were playing video games in the lobby or walking down to the corner to grab beverages from Starbucks. When we got back, I realized we could have just gotten coffee/tea at the concession stand.

The only fault I found with the theatre was that it was a bit hot and stuffy inside, but my body eventually adjusted.
