i returned to culture to give it another chance for a cut and decided to go for some color as well. this time i knew i couldn't tip on a credit card, so i arrived armed with cash.
rachel was my stylist and did a fantastic job on all accounts. she's been doing hair for 16 years and her expertise is evident. she knew exactly what to do with color to fit all of my criteria: warm it up, no obvious roots, no blond. she did the foils amazingly fast, and all by herself!
the color room is great. they provide a huge table covered in various magazines and your stylist brings water, tea or coffee while you wait.
downstairs, it's interesting to take note of the old house architectural details. they add a homey feel to an otherwise modern setting. the staff is also very friendly and helpful.
most of the haircuts i've had lately have been ok, average, or a little too trendy. not this time. now i have a style that is neither joan jett, nor mullety. i have enough layers to add volume and can wear it wavy or straight. my bangs are exactly where i want them, too.
the old adage applies here: you get what you pay for. this was an expensive cut and color, but it shows and is well worth it if you, like me, want something excellent, not just ok.
culture is easily accessible by the 23 bus, which will drop you practically at their door. the r7 sedgewick station is about five blocks away as well.

Excuse the expression but over the years I've referred to myself as a hair stylist slut. Bouncing from one stylist to the next, I've never settled into a meaningful, lasting, stylist/client relationship. I admit, my fine hair with just enough wave to be annoying can be a challenge. But it isn't that bad. Well, let me tell you, I've found true love at Culture Hair Studio. Recently I went to Culture for the first time since I starting working around the corner. Marisa did a fantastic job on my hair. Love it! Love it! I've been getting so many compliments too. Everyone wants to know who cut my hair. At last, a stylist who understands my hair! Culture, you have my undying love!!
Prices are right in line with what you would pay at any great salon in this area (actually, a bit less than a few others in the area). I started coming here after a few bad experiences at one particular salon in CH, and have found that the staff here is less rushed, friendlier and does an amazing job.
The atmosphere is so relaxed you feel like you're in someone's house having your hair done. Kick up your feet and enjoy the warm towel wrapped around your neck while you receive a wonderful scalp massage. Annie is a great colorist, gives an excellent cut and don't pass on the blow dry- it's well worth it! A bit pricey but worth it.
