5 reviews for Cuban Diner
This place has earned a spot in my regular Marietta lunch rotation. The people are super friendly, greeting you on the way in and bidding farewell on your way out. The food is also very inexpensive ($6 lunch specials).
The maduros (fried sweet plantains) are very tasty. I had never had yucca fries before, but I would imagine they couldn't get much tastier than the ones at Cuban Diner, especially with the clarified butter / herb dipping sauce that accompanies them. The Cuban sandwich is a solid option but they also offer many other dishes. I look forward to trying them all.
Don't be turned away by the crappy outdated strip mall this place is in. Once you're inside they make you feel at home with fast, friendly service and authentic, tasty, affordable fare.
We found this place after asking Ernesto, a Cuban-American friend of Daniel B., the best Cuban place around here. Honestly without word-of-mouth, I think this place would be hard to find. Like other hidden gems, this one is located in a very dated & sketchy-looking strip mall. But inside, it's welcome to Cuba - the music, the photographs, the staff, and of course the food :) Owner & server were both very warm & friendly.
Good selection of sandwiches & entrees, including lunch specials available from 11-5pm. I got the 1/2 Cuban sandwich with 2 sides for $5.99 - asked if I could get the 1/2 Cuban chicken sandwich instead but they said nada :( Sandwich was pretty good though but honestly don't eat them enough to compare with other restaurants. The sides were awesome - I got the plantains which are more like dessert (my favorite Cuban side - and loved that these were THICK pieces) & yellow rice (tasty). My friends liked their meals too (Cuban chicken sandwich with Yuca fries for $5.80, and Grilled fish fillet w/ Cuban lime marinade, plantains, & mixed vegetables for $6.95).
We love Cuban food so we'll definitely be back to try the other dishes.
So 3 stars, perhaps because I'm not really a fan of yucca or plantains ( at least the sweet seasoned ones..remind me too much of bananas) I would have not expected this place to be so nice from the outside, as it resides in a little strip mall, but alas, I should know better there's where some of the best eateries are. I have passes this place up several times,as I used to frequent the pharmacy next door. Anyhow... the service was great and really friendly, you can definitely tell it's family owned. The Cuban sandwiches were tasty, we also ordered a sampling platter which came with plantains, ham croquettes and other fried goodies. (which was a bit overwhelming for me- too much fried) All in all a good experience, I will for sure be coming back for the sandwich!
At first glance, this little place looks a little sketch. It's located off of Roswell Road in a sunken stip-mall next to the likes of an Asian video rental store and Ace Hardware. It's an odd place for a restaurant, but inside it's a real authentic jewel.
I had lunch here with my family one Sunday afternoon. My initial impression, once inside, was one of skepticism. But once I had a chance to settle in, I found the place to be quite adorable. There is lovely Cuban apparel adorning the walls and the music sounds ethnic.
The food and the service is what caught me off guard. Besides the fact that we were the only ones in the restaurant, the service was excellent. It felt as though we had arrived at our fictitious Cuban Uncle's house and his butler was tending to our every need!
The food was no less admirable and deliscious as the warm orange-ish paint color on the walls. They had things from classic Cuban rice and beans, to hot sandwiches that you can taste the love the cook put into it with each bite!
I'm not sure of everything they had, but all of us enjoyed what we ordered. I really hope some more people will try this restaurant out, it's very relaxed and nice, in contrast to the area that it is in.
Just went to Cuban Diner for lunch. I was pleased and relieved, real Cuban diner food - not fancy restaurant stuff.
The owners are actually Cuban. Do you realize how many Cuban, Argentine, etc restaurants in Atlanta are owned by non-natives?! I'm Cuban-American and I can tell on first bite. So many places provide "the idea of Cuban food" without it being real Cuban food with real Cuban understanding of how to prepare it properly.
We had the Midnight and Cuban sandwiches - right on the mark!
We had the fried plaintains - Tostones. Even in Miami it is getting harder to get freshly fried ones. These were right on the mark!
Had the Yuca con Mojo. What a relief it wasn't overwhelmed with garlic. It was right on the mark.
In Miami so many restaurants are now catering to tourists "idea of Cuban." These usually means an overwhelming garlic mojo that no Cuban would want in their mouth.
Had the Moros (beans and rice) - very good.
I'm looking forward to going back to try the entrees.
Keep in mind this is a diner - so the menu is simple and priced according to diner standards.
Enjoy.
