i really like this place. the sangria is good. the food is flavorful. the service rocks.

however, this place loses a star because it gets TOO LOUD. i hate having to try to yell over the music to talk to the person/people i'm with. if you want a great meal, then definitely come here... but don't expect to have a conversation.

The food was competently prepared and flavorful, and the menu was chock full of interesting choices. But it felt more like take out than high quality cuisine.

Zagat gave this place a 25 out of 30 for food last year, which was way too high in my opinion. But I think they knocked it down to a 22 this year, and that seems to be spot on. Cuba is good but not great.

Regarding the atmosphere, our table was tiny and the place was very noisy. It was packed with people who looked like they just got out of the office and were letting off some steam. I don't mind people kicking back and having drinks, but the atmosphere was very rowdy, and it made it feel like more of a bar night than a dining night. Truth be told, we really didn't feel like eating in a bar.

In the end, it wasn't the most memorable meal I've ever had, and it was certainly not the best Cuban food I've ever had. But it's worth a try if you have a craving for a Cuban meal.

Some of the freshest and most flavorful seafood dishes I've had!  I would go here every week if I was living in NY.  The mojitos are absolutely scrumptious and dangerous.  Get a pitcher.  Then, get a pitcher of the white wine sangria.  The six of us in the group all had different entrees and all were delicious.  You really can't go wrong, pick whatever you're in the mood for.

- Minus one star for the dipstick bartender who said, "oh, you're older than me" when I gave him my ID.  Smooth, man, very smooth...

I came here awhile ago with a HUGE group.  It may seem cramped and cozy up front, but they have plenty of room downstairs (or in the back?  I forget...) for groups.

We shared a ton of appetizers and pitchers of margaritas.  I don't actually remember the details, but I do remember loving my oxtail entree.  It's rich and flavorful and oh-so-delicious.  Yum.

I'm apparently getting old because my memory is really failing me, or maybe it's the fact that my thoughts of the food here are eclipsed by a memory of the extremely drunk gentleman who spent about half an hour talking to us (his "brothers and sisters") about politics, marriage, and his job, before his wife and brother came and swept him away.  Ahh, New Yorkers.

We had a good evening at Cuba, there was good life music and friendly staff which made for a really nice atmosphere. For that I am tempted to give four stars - the rating here is for the food, not the complete experience.

We had the Croquetas de Jamon, Tostones Rellenos, Montadito de Chorizo, the Calamares con Tamarindo and a mixed Ceviche plate. Everything was made well, no complaints. However, there was also nothing special about them - with the exception of the Calamares, which were impressively soft and not rubbery at all.

Since we had so many appetizers, we only picked one main course: the Vaca Frita. The dish was like most things we had that night good, but nothing special.

We had a bunch of really excellent Mohitos. Be warned, they are very strong! We also tried the cigars of the gentleman who is hand rolling them in the restaurant. They're cheap (about $5), but I wouldn't recommend buying one.

Go to Cuba if you are looking for a relaxed dinner in a relaxed atmosphere with really good drinks.

The giant pitcher of Mojito I split with my friend really distracted me from the food. Giant. Pitcher. Mojito. 2 People. Very distracting. Especially when it is so good. Tastes like juice. Dangerous.

I did pay attention in the beginning, we split the fried Yuca which came with a side mayonnaise-like dipping sauce. We eat this a lot in Brazil so obviously I loved it and it made me miss home like crazy. Love it that Cuban food is so similar to Brazilian food. Awesome.

I then had the Arroz con Pollo. It had avocado chunks in it, I do remember that, I definitely picked through my dish for the avocado chunks, very good, lots of different veggies and plenty of chicken to go around. Huge portion too, wow. Did not finish the whole thing.

We then split the Tres Leches which was also very good, sweet and coconut-y.

Not bad price-wise for two people, especially given the huge pitcher. Good vibe, nice/friendly service.

Excellent food but poor service. Essentially we had to hunt down a waiter in order to order drinks...then again to place an order. Only one of our appetizers was delivered so they didn't get the order right but the food was absolutely delicious. The empanadas were to die for.

Overall I can absolutely recommend the food but service was definitely lacking.

Okay. We need a little background first. I spent many of my formative years traveling to Miami with friends to visit all of their Cuban relatives who live there. I was basically raised among yelling, loud, hilarious Cubans. I've always loved the culture, the pride and most of all the food. Spending so many years in Miami I KNOW good Cuban food when I manage to (rarely) come across it.

Three of my friends and I were walking through Washington Square Park decidedly hungry and in the mood for something delicious to jump start our night of utter debauchery. One of them (the tall one) said "I've heard of a good little Cuban place. My response was a snort because we all know what a Cuban food snob I am. But I relented because I too was hungry and the clock was ticking.

We walked up to Cuba and were greeted by a large jovial man with his cigars. We managed to get a seat immediately in the back of the PACKED restaurant. First off this place has atmosphere and charm in spades. Tons of tiny glowing candles, polished dark wood and crisp white table clothes. The Cuban music was playing and everyone was laughing and talking (loudly!) with the aroma of roasting pork and garlic permeating the air. I felt like I was back in Miami.

We decided to split a few pitchers of mojito's which were AHH-MA-ZING! I also wanted to try a guava mojito which is even better than the others. Each of us had something different but I honestly don't remember what my friends chowed on because I was too intent on demolishing my plate. I had the Vaca Frita which is perhaps my favorite dish on earth and Cuba did not disappoint. It was tender and crispy at the same time, loaded with flavor; onions, mojo, and ajo. The rice was the perfect texture and the maduros were perfection.

We left Cuba with cigars, unbelievably full of food with flavors of my childhood. This is my new go to Cuban place in NYC.

A great place for friends, family, or even an adventurous date. They will make you feel at home and you will get a sense of the community and love the Cuban's tend to portray and pride themselves on. GO!

Just realized I dined here just about a year ago to date.  Love this place!

The sangria is better than I remember it.  There were 5 of us and we went through two pitchers, just like that!

The braised oxtail was muy deliciouso!  Suckling pig was slightly disappointing compared to the rest of the food.  Those who got steak seemed to really enjoy it.  The crispy yucca appetizer and calamari were also really good, but not wow.  For dessert we had the molten chocolate cake and tres leche cake.  Both were super yummy!

Not sure why I don't come more often, but it's such a great spot!

One of our favorite stops on our NYC trip.  We were in the mood for some Cuban food and live music on a Friday night, so we headed off to Cuba, naturally.  We had reservations but were told to wait at the bar for 5 minutes.  This turned out to be more like a  1/2 hour wait.  Ordinarily, I would be extremely agitated, but the happy vibe in here is so infectious we didn't really care.  Plus, the atmosphere provided entertainment value in itself.  Everyone was just so friendly - from the musicians, to the staff, to the other customers...there was even a little old lady dancing salsa in between tables.  Adorable.

The mojitos also kept us pretty well occupied.  The bartender made the best  we have ever tasted.  And I don't even like mojitos much.  Most mojitos go overboard on the mint and it's too overpowering.  The mojitos here were the perfect blend.  Make sure to nibble on the stick of sugarcane that comes with it - mmmm!!!  While we were standing at the bar, one of the bus boys spilled guacamole all over my friend's pants and jacket.  A little splattered on me, but it wasn't as bad.  He was so apologetic and helped us clean up.  Somebody came over (manager?) to see if we were okay and was eager to make it up to us with some free drinks.  2 guava mojitos on the house.  Now those were realllly good.

We were seated next to the jovial cigar roller in the corner.  It was fascinating to watch and he always had a group of people ogling through the window at his work.

Food was great and piping hot.  Empanadas were tasty.  For an entrée, I had the Cazuela Marinera - a casserole of all kinds of seafood.  My friend had the   For dessert, we had a guava flan de leche.  Delicioso!

If you go, make sure to go when there's live music and try and sit in the front area.  You'd have to be a miserable soul to not have a good time here.

A friend of ours was coming back to NY for a short visit from his year-long stint in India.  When we asked him what type of food he wanted to get, his first thought was Cuban.  This cuisine, they lacked in India and we were sure he was craving a nice churrasco with chimichurri sauce since such a thing would never be caught on a menu in the land of the holy cow.  Cuba was one of the first restaurants that came to our minds because it has always been a favorite of ours.  So a group of us ended up going there this past Thursday and we had a great time, as usual.

Cuba is kind of a hidden gem... in the part of Greenwich Village that is usually inundated with NYU students and cheaper restaurant and boozing options.  But Cuba is a nicer restaurant with a festive atmosphere... and an old man that sits near the front window rolling cigars.  I love that there is usually live latin music that puts you in a good mood.  It is not cheap, but not super expensive, with entrees averaging somewhere in the $20s.  Love the ropa vieja, oxtail stew, arroz con pollo, and the churrasco (I think the main difference between Argentinian/ Brazilian churrasco and the Cuban churrasco lies within the chimichurri sauce.  I think it's cilantro based instead of flat leaf parsley based).  When I came here a couple years back for my birthday dinner, they decorated my dessert with pretty chocolate letters that spelled "happy birthday" and it also had a sparkler attached to it... was like my personal firework show!

Only complaint is that sometimes it's so crowded, you have to wait even with a reservation.  But it's okay... just go to the bar and grab a glass of sangria, a mojito (with a sugarcane stick you can chew on), or a caipirinha... they are all good.  Love this place and will be going back again.

A case study in terrible food.  I went here yesterday for an unassuming lunch, and I left quite disappointed and slightly nauseous.

I ordered the croquetas de jamon ($5 or $6) for an appetizer followed by the lechon asado con mojo (12$ or $13) for the entree.  The croquetas totalled 5 in number and were deep fried a little too long as evidenced by its dark breaded skin.  The interior was a mushy jumble of sandwich grade ham that was distinctly flavorless.  The accompanying dipping sauce was a tall cup of ketchup, no joke.  A disappointing start to be sure, but I assumed the entree would be considerably better.  I mean how can you mess up suckling pig, yucca, and black beans with rice?  These are solid ingredients that make for a filling meal with little fuss, right?  Rest assured, this dish was even worse.  If you look at my attached photo you will see the pool of oil collected in the lower righthand corner of the photo.  The photo is misleading however, as the entire plate had was covered in a pool of oil.  The oil was not high quality either, so there was nothing to gain from this saturation.  The pork and the yucca were overstuffed with garlic to the point that it was comical.  I could even taste garlic in the rice, but I wasn't sure if that was my mouth being overwhelmed by the garlic in the other two offerings, or if the chef really felt that the rice needed garlic too.  So, yucca that could not be tasted at all due to oil and garlic; pork that tasted like garlic; and rice and beans that were bland and soulless.  Failure in every direction.

The service was especially slow, and in the very small space there was little to do except read the rave reviews posted on the wall (all from 2007) and listen to one Juanes song after the other.  We covered at least one album worth of his music during my ill fated venture here.  When the bill came, I was surprised to see that my two choices were each $1 more than the prices listed on the menu, hence the range shown above.  I thought about disputing this, but then I did a cost benefit analysis.  Is it worth it to save $2 if I have to spend 10 more minutes in this place trying to get the waiter's attention?  No.  No it's not.  Off I went, with the intent to never return.  Terrible.

Some last thoughts.  The portion sizes were very generous.  This is often the case with really bad food.  The chef tries to make up for lack of quality, by increasing quantity.  And, Cubans of the city should rise and protest this place.   Seriously, this is outrageous.

Good food.  Although too greasy for some of our group.  Good flavor for all of the food we tried.  Did not like the seating down stairs - it may be because the chicks next to us were annoying.  The staff was great to us and we enjoyed sitting at the bar before dinner.  Would go back and try again.

I have never been treated so rudely by a waiter in my entire life.  I've never before left a 0-cent tip, but that's what we left at Cuba.  The mojitos are fantastic, the food is pretty good, but neither are worth being openly abused when you had intended to have a nice dinner.

A great little place to chill - esp with live music

Was here for a light dinner/drinks and was pleased with everything - despite the fact that we were there when no live music was happening... though I hear it's always fantastic.

I had some outstanding empanadas habaneras with a couple rounds of well made sangria.  The casual yet cool environment was quite inviting and comfortable.  Combined with the great food and drinks (my colleague loved their mojito) I say it's a perfect spot to either swing by for a quick stop or invest an entire evening/night.

Last night, I spent the evening with a friend I have not seen in a long time, as I now live in California. We decided to stop by Cuba for some drinks and then possibly dinner. We ordered Mojitos and were clearly enjoying one another's company. The waiter would bang about and give us dirty looks when we'd smile at him throughout our conversation... Out of nowhere, he came up to us and said "THIS IS A RESTAURANT. THIS IS NOT A LOUNGE. You can't have a table if you are just having drinks." Well, said we paying customers, we WERE going to have dinner until you just harangued us for paying you money and enjoying ourselves. The Mojitos were delicious, but I would never return to a place with such monstrous service. Oh, and by the way, it was a Tuesday night and the restaurant was virtually empty. Jerks.

Cuban food is my favorite genre of food so I know the good from the bad. This place is definitely all good! The ambience is dark and romantic and the food is incrediable. From the seafood dishes to the yuca fries there really isn't a bad choice to be made on the menu. The place is small so reservations are necessary. The live Latin music also adds some authenticity to the experience. I advise pants with an elastic waste band!

Took a first date here last weekend. This place was great. I wanted the perfect mix of good latin food, and nice ambiance. We got here on a friday night, and there was a 45 minute wait.

We walked down stairs to the bar, and started drinking! The mixed drinks are delicious. I had the special Mojito, with aged rum. My date had a margirita (I think). They both came with a stick of sugar cane. Very tasty. Afterwards, we ordered a second round of drinks, but i'm not so certain what they were. I fully enjoyed them.

The hostess came down and escorted us to our table. It was on the bottom floor in a cave like cubby. The perfect spot. I ordered a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc, the Garlic Octopus, Empenadas to start. And we split the beef, and chicken as our main dishes.

All the food was lovely, and this is the perfect atmosphere for a nice night.

We had 3 appetizers, 2 entrees, rice and beans and dessert and the bill came to be $83.  Not bad for 3 people!

For starters we had croquetas, empanadas de picadillo, and garlic shrimpr.  The croquetas and empanadas were great.  The shrimp was good, but the portion was shrimpy.

For entrees we had arroz con pollo and lechon.  The lechon was awesome!!  The arroz con pollo initially looked small, however when we kept digging into the rice it seemed to grow and grow.

They had a very nice pastel tres leches which was not runny or completely wet--nicely moist, with a very tasty fresh cocounut frosting.

Ambience was dark and nice, like a club.  Live musicians enlived the dinner and the people around us at the next tables were jovial and good company.  Service was quick and officious.

For my friends who had never had Cuban food before, it was a real treat and they are coming back!!!

The atmosphere and the complimentary cigars, rolled right in the front of the restaurant, were great.  As was the live band.  The food was just okay.  While the group of us had many pitchers of sangria, it tasted a little light on the alcohol side, and I'm not even a fan of strong sangria.  The paella came out too quickly to have been just-made, same with the yuca fries, and I guess I've had better empanadas, too.  The salmon entree, over coin potatoes and artichoke hearts, was pretty good and tasted fresh, but didn't blow my socks off.  However, dessert was excellent.  The sparkler candle the staff put in my friend's birthday cake made the night.

We did not plan to go to Cuba -  we just happened to be there that night. What attracted my attention was a gentleman making cigars at the front. Felt really authentic.
We were seated downstairs - really private space with a nice decor. Service was good and quick. Drinks were pleasant and refreshing. However, food was just alright. We ordered two main dishes: PAELLA VALENCIANA and Chicken breasts stuffed with shrimp, mashed potatoes and mushroom sauce (could not find the name of this dish on their website). I was really excited about Paella as I love seafood. However, it ended up being a pretty bland dish - seafood (shrimp, scallops, calamari, clams, mussels) did not bring any freshness. Rice and chicken were so-so. The best and only good part of the dish was chorizo - flavorful and delicious. The chicken dish was bland too. "Stuffed shrimp" part was just one shrimp in between two pieces of chicken. Mashed potatoes were regular as well. I liked the mushroom sauce, however I like everything made with mushroom.
The worst part came right after we left Cuba - my stomach got upset :( I might be back for the atmosphere and great location however will order just appetizers and drinks.

We (group of 6) ate here for my gf's birthday with reservations at 10 pm. We were seated immediately, while other fools were forced to stare longingly at our table. It's a pretty small place up front, although there seemed to be more seating in the back.

The food was very good. I had ceviche to start, which was good, but unexciting, as it only consisted of calamari and shrimp for its sea fare. Others shared the empanadas which were filled with tasty chicken and beef, respectively, and fried to a crispy golden hue.

At this point, our celebration kicked into high gear, so I only remember my pork entrée, which was juicy, shredded, and delicious. It was served with some juca, which was equally tasty, although the hard "sticks" contained throughout was a slight turn-off.

Coupled with some decent service, I can whole heartedly recommend Cuba. (despite their dirty commie ways)

This is one of my best meals in New York. I don't eat meat and I'm not gonna rave about the fish, but the Lechon Asado (pork dish with garlic yucca and black beans) is top notch. Both paellas are excellent too. I don't think there's anything my friends and I didn't like there. It's the perfect place to take visiting friends.

The cuban food here is very good, on par with decent cuban in Miami (I lived there for many years) but that's not what I like best.

Cuba can be a bit cramped if you're in the front room. It can also be loud.   But these are things I like about it.  Cramped and loud...

because the old man rolling at the cigar table in the corner takes up space as does the 3 piece live band playing Latin music in the corner.  It's usually a lively scene.  Waiters are busy.  People are partying, mojitos.  I like it.

If you want to have a quiet meal, go when the band is not in or ask to sit in the back dining room. Otherwise go for a fun lively time on the weekend with very good cuban food.  And don't forget your complimentary cigar for the walk home.

Wow, what a perfect last meal in NY. We were hot as we hoofed it from the subway and found our way to Cuba. The mojitos made it all worthwhile.  We started with singles and moved on to a pitcher. We were feeling no pain by the time we toddled back to the subway.

The menu featured many offerings, making selection difficult but we finally settled for a taste of everything. Our meals were very nicely presented. The Paella was good, my Mahi-Mahi was just ok but the Skirt Steak was over the top!!! All three of us wanted to eat that plate.

My dining companions are local and  vow to come back often. Next time I'm in NY I'll be sure to stop in again for a taste of Cuba.

STRIKE! My quest is complete. I can now comfortably settle into Manhattan knowing that I will be helped through long winters with a little taste from home. This is Cuban food done as good as any you will find.

The mojitos are solid. Go during happy hour and they are sinful treat you can not defeat at $5 a pop. The sangria is also solid and comes in pitchers, if you feel festive.

We started with the "papa rellenas." A little small, but solid on the flavor and presentation. For our entrees we went with the churrasco (Cuban primarily in that you find it at Cuban restaurants) and the Vaca Frita (another long time favorite). Both were solid. The churrasco came with a side of yuca mash that was unique and complimentary. The Vaca Frita was just plain solid. It was not overcooked and enjoyed the compliments of a good, hearty amount of onions. The black beans ... solid. The portions are hearty and very flavorful.

We finished off the meal with a Tres Leches that was amazing. They worked coconut into the mix and topped it with a slice of pineapple that does this dessert that little extra well.  A cafecito and we were done. Satisfied. Wouldn't change a thing. Feel totally confident of  bringing family to my little slice of Cuba in Manhattan.

My girlfriend and I were craving sangria. I did a bit of research, as any Yelper would do, and all signs pointed to Cuba. Unfortunately, we missed happy hour by a few minutes (past 7pm) and had to pay way more than $5 for our pitcher of red sangria. The sangria was great (and I'm not one to really ever complain about sangria) as was the beef empanadas and paella valenciana that we shared (tons of seafood). Portion size was decent in that we had a teensy bit leftover.

The decor is charming and quaint. Great for an intimate date or gathering of friends. It took us a while to finish the sangria. We never felt rushed (it was Wed night) and our water glasses were always filled promptly. I would definitely come back again, shoot for the happy hour specials, and try the caipirinha!

I love Cuba because it is great in every aspect of a restaurant: food, drinks, ambiance, live music, and service! The waitress who is originally from Cuba served us and was very attentive and gave great recommendations for beverages. But we ended up with mojito. The rum is strong and the mojito itself has very rich mint flavor. Not too empowering but give a hint of bitter-sweet taste. I definitely love the appetizers, pinchos and plaintains. Lovely! A little disappointed as we didn't get to see the guy who rolled cuban cigars that night. But the live cuban music made up the night for us.

Funnily enough, my friend recently sent a Cuba birthday dinner invitation to our group of college buddies.  He included the link to Yelp's reviews of the restaurant, where my previous 3-star commentary held a cameo.  Sure this spot is adorable and full of character, but the food is just a step above mediocre.  However, I did enjoy my dinner experience more than my previous lunch trip.

The cozy cafe features a hidden back dining room, as well as dark underground seats on the lower level.  A small Cuban band plays authentic tunes, mixing well with the candlelight to provide an intimate dining experience.

Cuba was packed during my Thursday evening visit, but it must have been well-staffed, because our waitress was frequently hovering around us.  We all decided to get this birthday party started with a sweet cocktail.  My mojito was extremely strong and could have benefited from additional lime juice.  The group also shared a few appetizers to balance the alcohol buzz.  The ham croquettes were heavily fried, but delicious.  The crispy exterior did not mask the smokey ham flavor within, as is typically an issue elsewhere.  The fried, green Tostones were fantastically topped with fresh garlic, adding flavor to a side dish that rarely leaves a lingering essence.  The Roasted Pork Tamale, however, was mushy and bland.

My Pollo Manigua entree contained two thinly pounded grilled chicken breasts and a salad of fresh watercress, avocado, scallions, and tomato.  All of the ingredients were fresh and led to a very light menu option.  My friend was presented with a smark-adorning chunk of celebratory Tres Leches Cake.  The pastry uniquely incorporated coconut and pineapple essence to the milky classic dessert.  Though the pineapple was barely perceptible, the coconut milk and chewy shavings provided a fruity sweetness and texture to the creamy cake.

We stopped to grab a freshly rolled cigar from the Cuba man working away at a corner table in the front dining area.  As with an after-dinner cocktail, the complimentary smoke was a great way to end the meal.

Though I have found both of my Cuba experiences positive, for some reason, I cannot get myself to reward it with 4-stars.  My exit from the restaurant did not leave me with the lingering urge for a follow-up visit, so I am sticking with my original 3-stars of approval.

This place is the best.  My bestfriends and I end up here at least once a year for some sort of a celebration.  I recommend the sangria and the mojito, together at the same time.  No I'm kidding.  I recommend them separately. Actually what I really recommend is the "calamares con tamarindo", which is to die for. Overall, great food and great service.

Did I mention the nice man who rolls cigars and the live music? Well the nice man doesn't provide the live music.  He only rolls the cigars.  Other people provide the live music.  I'm so excited to write about this place I can't even get my thoughts straightened out.  Just look at the pictures.

This is my one of my favorite places to eat in the city.  I don't go often but when I do I am elated.  The staff is friendly and the food is amazing.  The decor is wonderful, the music as well (sometimes a live band plays) and they used to have a guy rolling cigars by the window.. I liked watching him while he worked.

Great mojitos!  We sat at the bar and the bartender was friendly and attentive.  This is a nice spot to start the night off.  They have a good happy hour, too.  $5 mojitos, sangria, and appetizers.  I will definitely go back!

Loved the atmoshere, even in the basement, which seemed like a bigger room than it actually was. Music was at good level, wait staff very friendly and speedy and the food was tasty. Mojitos were EXCELLENT!

We had the croquetas for an app--soo good!! And my main course, the Pollo Guajira, was delicious. We moped up that sauce!! The boyfriend ordered the Arroz con Pollo Criollo, which was good, but not outstanding.

Overall, I really enjoyed this place and look forward to stopping by for at least mojitos next time I'm in NYC.

We had a private party in one of the little alcoves.. the staff was very attentive and everyone had an awesome time.  The food was amazing and very filling.  We had pitchers of sangria and mojitos.  The waiters were very attentive and the atmosphere was dark and intimate with great music.

YUM! Churasco con chimichurri is a MUST, first and foremost (although my bf was less than thrilled with all of the garlic in the sauce, haha) and a pitcher of red sangria. It tasted like candy (might have had something to do with the other alcohol in my system, but still)

We had the appetizer sampler that had a bunch of fried, delicious food on it and calamari which was delicious. I tried the plantains (divine as plantains usually are) and my friend's Rope Vieja (preferred my steak and so did she)!

Also, grabbed a few cigars on the way out and tipped the nice man, the atmosphere was bumping and we sat down in the cave, which I very much liked. Fun place with good food!
