    Ordered

Rainbow Roll: Variety of Fish on a California Roll

Mahalo Roll: Yellowtail, Asparagus & Cucumber Topped w/ Tuna, Macademia Nuts & Mango Sauce

Kamikaze Roll: Shrimp Tempura, Spicy Tuna, Avocado Topped w/ Eel, Smoked Salmon & Crab

And their special of the day
Stop Drop n Roll: eel, smoked salmon, shrimp, avocados, cucumber topped with flying fish roe

#1 roll of the night had to be the Kamikaze! It had a good amount of spice to it, the eel skin was crisp and added a great touch of sweetness to the roll.

Was sad that the mahalo roll didn't come with macademia nuts (they ran out) but I still enjoyed it

The rainbow was your standard rainbow roll, although I wish the slices of sashimi were a tad bigger like I had recalled before

Last but not least, the special roll's addition of the flying fish roe was a pleasant treat.

    Overall Thoughts

Definitely a great date spot =)

    Great Lunch specials M-Fri.

You can also order and pick-up, which is convenient!

The food is fresh, though the superior quality is reserved for dinners it seems.  It's the best in this area, but if you're coming from a larger city with higher caliber tastebuds- you won't be especially impressed.  Still, I have tried all of the sushi places on the Penninsula and this is at the top!

This spot is our JAM.  No, not jam like the smuckers you spread on your wheat toast...JAM like listening to Kanye and Jay-Z ripping through "Otis" kind of JAM.

The sushi is fresh and the chefs behind the bar are friendly and are always enjoying themselves.

QUICK TIP:  if you are ever confused about how to thank a sushi chef (since you normally tip the waiter with your check), it's considered good form to buy them a beer.  Typically this will get everyone there pretty amped up.

CF is well priced (for the great quality) during the evening and weekends.

During the week for lunch, however, it's a steal!

You can get a bento box (which includes miso soup, rice and small salad) that contains your choice of three things:  last time I got a spicy tuna roll, salmon terriyaki, and chicken terriyaki---all for $13!  I think you can also get just two things for $9!  Another of their lunch special's is 3 hand rolls for $8.

Another great thing:  you can order real wasabi here for a buck extra...it's worth it.

I was on travel in Monterey and jumped on yelp for food recommendations. Crystal fish was high on the list and for good reason. From the outside it doesn't look like much but the food is fantastic. The sushi is extremely tender and the cooks are pretty friendly if you sit at the bar. The wait staff isn't very attentive, that's my only reason for knocking the place down a star.

I brought my family here for lunch.  Everyone was very happy with the food.  The food was fresh and clearly high quality, and that was at the tail end of their lunch hours when it's reasonable to be concerned about the freshness of raw fish.

I had the pink lady hand roll, the firecracker roll, and the sesame chicken.  To be honest, the sesame chicken was simply to round out my experience for the purposes of writing a yelp review.  It ended up being incredibly well made ...  but I came here for the raw fish.  I was incredibly impressed with the pink lady, which was unlike anything I've had at other places.  The firecracker was a favorite amongst the rest of my family, and I agree it was very well made.

Saturday night Thanksgiving weekend. The place was packed and the waitresses were scrambling. The girl taking names wasn't really taking names and when I asked if we could put our name down, she looked at me in a way as if to say, "Who the F do you think you are?!"

    Uh....a customer?

That wasn't a good first impression.

She said a table for 2 would be 15-25 minutes. We left a name and went for a walk. It was only 10 minutes and when we got back to the restaurant, our name had been crossed off and five other names after ours had been seated. What happened to 15-25 minutes?

We were told to wait and that the waitress would come to seat us. The table was ready and open. We could have sat ourselves. All three waitresses were at the cash register.

    Uhm....can you say, "delegate?"

We were eventually seated and given menus. 10 minutes pass and a waitress who wasn't ours came by after I gave her eye contact and nodded at her.

    "Hello. Have you been helped?"

The waitress who was supposed to take care of us RAN OVER and told the first waitress, "Oh, it's okay. I'll take their orders."

I guess it's a common practice here to steal customers from your coworkers?

"What can I get for you?"

    "Uh.....water would be nice."

"Okay and what would you like to order?"

"We'd like some water for now."

10 minutes to get a panicked waitress to our table for an order of faucet water. Nice.

After we were brought our waters, she disappeared again and didn't return until I stared at her for a good couple minutes.

I'm sorry honey, but if you don't want to work, don't. Go home and let your boss hire someone who will do the job properly and give the restaurant a better reputation.

Once we ordered our food, it all came in a blur. What the hell happened to the snail's pace? All of our courses came at once: appetizer, sushi, main dish, and entree. Thanks.

Salmon sashimi was very good and very fresh.
Dragon roll was balanced and not too heavy on the sauce.
Caterpillar roll was light and the avocado was pleasant.

Kitsune udon was WAY TOO SALTY. Tofu skins were too sweet. Crab cake was too hard.

Sesame chicken was also WAY TOO SALTY and fried similarly to Panda Express.

Seaweed salad was WAY TOO SWEET and I couldn't take any seaweed under the heavy dressing.

$2 oysters were some of the smallest oysters I've ever seen, but they were fresh.

Green Tea ice cream was gritty.

I doubt I'll ever return. There's a much better sushi restaurant just a few doors down.

One of the best sushi places I have been to.

Taste and flavors were spot on. The owner made our rolls. He made what we ordered and even made us a few rolls based upon our likes.

Service was exceptionally prompt for the order and requests.

Every sushi roll I consumed at Crystal Fish imparted a unique flavor combination and an unforgettable freshness; they unabashedly came out and strut their stuff for us. Great selection of Japanese traditional dishes and sushi as well as some creative Crystal Fish concoctions.

Everything from the first sip (of Japanese imported beer) to the last drip (of green tea ice cream) was consumed with the utmost enjoyment. I'm thinking Crystal Fish might become my weekly -- or biweekly -- dinner stop.

A rundown of our dinner (for 2):

*Asahi Japanese Beer - a great light beer and a great sushi accompaniment

*Gyoza Appetizers - oh so good!

*Miso Soup - great sushi pre-lude with nice chunks of tofu and green onions.

*Monterey Roll - tempura soft-shelled crab fused together with
avocado and topped with tuna and crab. This roll took centerstage -- it was one bite after another of pure deliciousness.

*Mahalo Roll - yellowtail, asparagus and cucumber paired with tuna, macadamia nuts and a mango sauce. Paradise in a roll!

*Shawna's Chimichurra Roll - tempura shrimp, albacore, tuna, jalapeno, cream cheese and avocado. This roll is definitely a keeper for me and I still have recurring dreams about it.

*Cherry Blossom Roll - Asparagus, tuna, salmon and avocado
laid out in a beautiful flower arrangement, this roll blooms in your mouth.

*Deep-Fried Cheesecake w/Green Tea Ice Cream - an amazing textural combination with creamy cheesecake coated with a crispy tempura batter and accompanied with green tea ice cream.

Looking for a great sushi / sashimi spot in Monterey?  Crystal Fish it is!

3 stars for the ambiance and decor.
Although I really enjoyed eating without any tv screens, the decoration was kinda plain and did not feel like i was in a Japanese restaurant.

    5 stars for the food.
I am a sashimi fan and i can say that Crystal Fish has amazing, fresh sashimi. I tried the sashimi sampler, 8 pieces for $12. The salmon and yellow tail were excellent, but the tuna and albacore were just to die for. As i did not have enough, i asked for more. I ordered the medium fatty tuna (they were out of Toro) with fresh grated wasabi. Just close your eyes and feel the tuna melting in your mouth... Amazing.

Awesome sushi here, just awesome... but I have to say that even though the sushi looks reasonably priced, the rolls are somewhat smaller compared to most sushi restaurants I've been to. But the most important thing is the sushi is fresh fresh fresh and yum yum yum.

On busy nights (which often occur at Crystal Fish) the restaurant feels very crowded (almost Valentine's Day-like, where you are basically face-to-face with the table next to you). This isn't that big of an issue if you don't have personal space/privacy concerns, but it can put a bit of a damper on a romantic night out.

We ordered 4 rolls and 3 arrived and the fourth did not arrive until we were done with our first. Refills on water were only received when asked for which ultimately made me sad because the sushi was really good.

Won't be rushing back for an over an hour lunch which I presume is worse at dinner :-(

One of the best sushi places I have been to in the Bay Area.

I was sad from my eating experience at Old Fisherman's Grotto, and needed some sushi to cheer me up. This place had great Yelp reviews, so we hopped in the car and headed over.

The sign isn't very prominent, so keep an eye out as you're driving.

From hot towels (for our hands) to individual sushi boards with wasabi and ginger, this was reminiscent of eating sushi in Japan.

We sat at the bar and ordered uni, ama ebi, unagi and ika. The fish was super fresh and tasty - really top notch!

A few points that really won me over:

    - They use real bamboo leaves for presentation, which is what I'm used to seeing from sushi places in Japan.
    - Instead of being the standard ika (thick, pre-cut and pre-processed), this one was freshly prepared, and the sushi chef cut it into very thin slices. It makes it far less chewy.
    - Fresh ginger on the ika. Yum!
    - The unagi was toasted right before the chef served it to us. It was warm and crispy and carmelized. Exactly what unagi should be.

Overall it was great sushi, very well executed. I only wish I had more space in my tummy to eat.

Next time, our drive to Monterey will be for this great sushi place. What a gem!

Our server was very attentive and nice, I don't know why people complain.

And when you come to a sushi place...eat the sushi please. Don't go starting on their teriyaki. You don't compare the steak from Denny's to one from a steakhouse and complain about their quality, so don't judge a SUSHI place by their TERIYAKI.

Wowzah, their vegetarian rolls are GOOD.  My husband and I were practically fighting over the pieces of the Shroomalicious roll.  We also had the eggplant roll and a plain veggie roll, which were also great.
As a veghead sushi lover, I really appreciate vegetarian options that go beyond carrot/cucumber.  The creativity is something we'll definitely go back for.  Hopefully they'll consider expanding the section even more!
And the service was fantastic to boot!

My family was recently in Monterey Bay for the holidays and we felt like some sushi.  We selected Crystal Fish solely based on the reviews here at Yelp (Thanks guys!).  We certainly were not disappointed.  My family lives/works in Seattle and Portland so we are no stranger to good sushi.  The reviews said it can get busy and they were right, service and the sushi chefs where very slow.  We waited a good while before anything showed up.  However once on the table it was delicious.  We tried three different rolls; Shawna's Chimichanga, Monterey Roll, and Fire Cracker Roll.  The Monterey Roll was the one that shined about the rest, very good!  We also tried several pieces of Nigiri; Sake, Hamachi, and Maguro.  All were tasty, no complaints.  They were out of Toro unfortunately which is my favorite Nigiri.

Went there for lunch on 12/31/2011.
The service was okay. Waitress was friendly, if a little bit inattentive.
The sushi itself was the disappointing part -- the fish I had was clearly unfresh, somewhat darkened in color. The uni (sea urchin) had turned into an unappetizing brown (fresh uni is supposed to be yellower).
So why three stars? The chefs were very friendly, and I also liked the decor and atmosphere that the place had to offer. Plus, I found the prices to be alright for a restaurant on Lighthouse Ave.

I came here after a fun day at the aquarium. We had to wait a bit for a table even though there were a few empty tables. When I was shown to a table they tried to put us at one of the dinky tables for two people even though there was a much nicer table available right next to us. They said they wanted to keep it open for a larger party even though it was getting later in the evening and there were no other people coming in. The waiter had to ask the manager if this was okay, which i understand to a certain degree, but it was not terribly busy and past dinner hour. The manager was apparently okay with this and we sat down and ordered. We ordered only a few things because with sushi it's easy to get carried away and want to eat more than you can, so my boyfriend and I like to order a few items first and then order more if we're still hungry. Our second order they took 30-45 mins to make two orders of sushi. Simple sushi too!! Eventually we had to ask for the check and just leave. I noticed that the waitress never write down our second order and I'm suspicious that she forgot to even mention it to the chef. We we asked for our check she said, "Are you sure? I think they're still working on it." after 30-45 mins? Really? Then she said that they had a really big party (true they are understaffed and were spending all their time on one table and forgetting about almost everyone else in the restaurant...one couple sat down and were waiting for their order to be taken for almost 15 mins) and that it was taking all their time. Well, we're customers too. I really think she just totally forgot our order. There is a sushi place down the street from them. I'll try that one next time I'm in town and forget this place all together. Don't be lured in by all the customers, not all that glitters is gold.

Ended up overdrawing my checking account because this restaurant literally took an entire week to take the money out of my account. Its technically my fault, but an entire week ?! Id rather eat somewhere that doesnt take an entire week to take the funds from my account. Its like that annoying relative or friend that takes forever to deposit or cash a check that you wrote them.

Ok. So the sushi was decent and decently priced. They have a variety of different rolls on the menu and they weren't too boring either, so all in all it is a pretty good place to go if you want good sushi for a good price.

BUT. I was pretty upset with the service. Me and my three girlfriends walk in, no one acknowledges our presence for at least five minutes. They all just look at us and go about their business. My girlfriend actually had to flag a person down and ask to be seated. And then we waited too long for our menus...
We then all order sake bombs and rolls and miso soup etc. We get our food, finish most of our meal, but we were a little upset that we had to ask for our appetizer (miso soup) because it hadn't arrived and we were almost done with our meal. We also noticed this happened at the table next to us.

Although this server was horrible, sushi chef Solomon (who was filling in for a server on vacation) took the time to help us out because our server was ignoring us. He was extremely nice and comped a miso soup. He was very cheerful and is probably the only reason I'll return.

After a day at the Gilroy Outlets, eating fried chicken, French fries, fried egg rolls, and some other fried food, we were looking for something less fried for dinner. We settled into our hotel in Carmel, and asked everyone what they wanted for dinner. As mentioned earlier, we were pretty fried-out, but wanted something with seafood. Wanted to hold off on clam chowder, or anything that was cream based.

I checked on my Yelp app, and Crystal Fish came up, and what's more, it's a place that's been long on my bookmark list. I suggested this place to my family, and they were very willing to check this place out.

At 6PM on a Saturday night, all of the tables of this place were full. Our timing was good, as a table for the 4 was cleared and finished setting up. We were seated immediately. Soon after, there was already groups of people waiting outside for an available table.

As well as an good-sized sushi menu and offerings, they also have a good variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

    We ordered:
-Beef Short Ribs (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): Nice, bite-sized pieces of deboned short ribs. Tender and hot, and marinated enough so that it wasn't salty. Nice offset to the predominantly seafood dishes we ordered.

-Miso-glazed butterfish (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): This appetizer-sized dish was moist and flaky, and nicely colored with a miso glaze. A bit too salty for my liking, but tasty nonetheless.

-Agedashi Tofu (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): The sauce for the tofu is served separately. Diners can add more or less sauce to their liking. We loved the lightly fried and delicate batter over the tofu. This arrived hot the table. A favorite!

-Kitsune Udon (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): two orders of these for the girls. Each topped with kamaboko, snow crab, seaweed, and tofu skin. The noodles were soft, yet chewy. No pre-packaged-then-boiled udon here.

    Sush (http://www.yelp.com/bi...):
    -Tekka Maki
    -Cherry Blossom Roll
-Hawaiian Roll: Big-Eye tuna with avocado

The fish for the sushi was very fresh. Rolls were very well prepared, and the extra ingredients didn't overpower the fish.

Couldn't resist, but we (I) had to order dessert. Yes, it was fried, but it sounded good:
-Tempura-fried cheesecake (http://www.yelp.com/bi...): Came with a scoop of green tea ice cream, then topped with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Kids wanted mango mochi ice cream, so they arranged them with the cheesecake. All nicely presented. The batter was a little thick over the cheesecake, making it a pretty rich dessert.

A great Yelp find! We'll be back the next time we're in the area.

Service was slow at first. Same dude cleans the tables, serves food, busses, etc. However the food was well worth the wait. The Maguro sushi was fresh and a nice portion size. The miso soup was good but a little bland.

The rolls on the menu are simple but were delish! Service was friendly and quick once we were Seated. I would definitely come back!

Great tempura, teriyaki, short ribs, and sesame chicken. Makes picking which comco you want a difficult task.

I will also say "Best Sushi in Monterey." And while this statement is true in my opinion, they still don't compare to Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area or standouts in the LA area. Oh well, much better than nothing since Koto Sushi closed.

Technically, I'm giving about a 4.25 stars...so it rounds down.

Quick review.  I ordered the combination special with the beef short rib and the california roll and nigiri sushi.  Hands down, this is the best casual Japanese restaurant I have ever been to!  In the tri-valley, where I'm from, sushi places are popular if they give large portions for the money, though they do sacrifice on the quality of the food.  In Berkeley, where I go to school, I haven't much luck recently with Japanese food.

Crystal fish hits the sweet spot because the portions they serve are just right.  Plus, my combination special came on two plate: one with a bowl of rice and beef, the other with my sushi.  I was expecting a bento box of some sort, but I found the cleaner plates much more appealing!

Ok, now why I'm only 4.25.  The price is reasonable, but I feel as if it could at least $1-2 cheaper.  Plus, the rice used for the nigiri sushi fell apart easily, so I had to eat the fish and the rice separately.

Overall though, I was pleasantly surprised.  When I come back to Monterey in the future, I'll stop by Crystal Fish to get my decently priced and good quality sushi.

Loved this place until I found out they serve blue fin tuna. Until they  cut that out, I'm afraid we'll have to boycott.

Every restaurant, especially those in the hometown of seafood watch, should take a lead in modeling sustainability, especially for the most endangered species...

I am so glad we found this place in a brochure and glad that the concierge at my hotel said this is her favorite place. It's a hole in the wall that I would probably not have noticed. We had to wait a bit, the place was packed. Everything was amazingly delicious! We drank and ate til we were full. The sashimi, the rolls, the special appetizers, and the special birthday dessert was amazing too. Our waiter was great. THe place is very reasonably priced. For all that we ate and drank the bill would've been three times as much in an LA sushi bar. Can't wait to come back to this place! Best sushi in a long time! Also, it was full of regulars which is always a good sign!

I'll keep this short. The service is horrible here. I'm not lying. There were open tables everywhere yet no one at all would acknowledge my bf or myself for over 10 minutes. All the sushi chefs looked and made eye contact with me without a single hello, smile or even a dam nod of the head. 2 servers walked past. The bus boy walked by and looked at me.

Confused, I put my name on the empty list that was on top of the empty hostess stand. I wanted for over 10 minutes with atleast 4 open tables and 2 spots at the sushi bar with zero recognition of being alive. I kept getting stared at by the workers and NO ONE said hello or even smiled.

There wasn't a line, there was NO ONE on the list above me and there were visible open seats so how can a establishment go over 10 minutes ignoring potential customers on a non-busy service.

I was a server for many years and I would of gotten my a** chewed out if my manager saw a customer not being acknowledged for that long.

I guess this wasn't short but my stay at crystal fish was. After 10 minutes (yes I kept looking at my watch), I finally left. No one said anything to me during those long awkward minutes yet EVERY WORKER made eye contact but that was it.

here are some tips on what to say:

    "Hello."
    "Hi."
    "We'll be right with you."
    "(insert smile)"
    "One second"
...or even a sound.. just a weird squeaking noise would of been better then glares as employees walked by..

ughghhg what a waste of 10 minutes..

I dont feel bad giving this place a 1 star, because Im not the only one giving them a 1 star for what happen.  So we decided we wanted sushi while we stayed in Monterey for the weekend. Entered the restaurant, saw a few tables empty.  Saw a sign up sheet but didnt think we'd have to wait.  But the servers were talking to each other about a togo phone order.  The sushi chefs looked at us when we entered.  The bus boy walked by and cleaned up a table.  A server walked by looked at us. Saw an empty table on the right side of the restaurant, but didnt say "it'll just take a min, sorry" just walked by us and went to another table. stood there for a few mins. thought WTF is this? and left after standing there for 10 or so mins.

Who knows if the food is any good.  But the fact that you cant even seat a party of 2.  Shows that the service must seriously BLOW!!!

This review is just based on the Bento Box which I had for lunch which was just meh.  Teriyaki chicken was no good.  Sushi roll (the Firecracker) was good.  I was still hungry after choosing the two option bento box and ordered some tempura veggies - the veggies and then also the miso soup were just meh.  I have to say that Ocean Sushi's special boxes are so much more delish, like the Sunday Special.  I feel that you can judge how good the sushi is going to be by the miso soup.  And this miso was just okay.

However, I won't let it deter me and I will go back and just try a roll.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Monterey, and the best place in the area to get sushi! The atmosphere is casual and clean. Though the service is a little slow, the staff is always friendly! We like to go here for their lunch special, which happens between 11ish and 2, M-F. For under $10, you can get a high-quality bento box. My favorite combination - salmon teriyaki and dragon roll (the bento boxes all come with salad, rice, and miso soup). Enjoy!

Had dinner there the other  night and it was very good. We had the Tuna Poki and Sake and Tako Sashimi.  The Tako pieces were a bit on the small side but it was fresh and crisp.  Sometimes I just want a bigger piece of the Octopus maybe like a whole leg or maybe next time I will ask for the eye : - ).  The Sake was fresh and just buttery.
The place is a little out dated or maybe that's the look they are going for but the food and service is good.
We will come back for sure when we are in the area.
