Good food. Overpriced. But somewhere you should go at least once.
The crab is good and oily and greasy. But alsmot anything that all buttered up and oiley will taste good. (something to think about).
Seeing live fish all around you while you eat may not be all that appetizing

I really wanted to like this place because it was an idea that an Asian restaurant can compete in a fine dining environment. However, this place is horrible mainly because of the service and attitude. The food is okay to good but extremely overprice. You are paying for the ambience here and not just the food.
My biggest problem with this place as I mentioned is the service and attitude. The service is slow and food comes out luke warm. WTF? I'm paying this much money and the food is luke warm and doesn't come out with the other dishes. You need to be on the ball if you are going to be in fine dining and charging these prices.
The other problem is the attitude from the Maitre'd or host or whatever you want to call him. I've got to believe he is related to the family with the type of attitude he was putting off with his peach fuzz gotee and men's warehouse suit. Just because you are the gate keeper to your place doesn't mean you have to be a rude prick. You got off the boat the same way as everybody else so just be nice.
Oh, the whole story of An's secret kitchen and that the mom is the one who is cooking the crab in the secret kitchen to so BS but good marketing. There is no way in hell that little lady is cooking those crabs by herself in that secret kitchen all day. PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE!
1 star for decor
1 star for politeness
1 star for clean water
This place is clearly for special occasions, which was the reason I was here. If you live in the San Gabriel Valley, are Asian, coming here with Asians, have been at an "Asian Wedding Reception" or have had authentic Asian cuisines...DO NOT COME HERE!!!! The only thing that keeps this place in business is people who don't know that Chinese seafood can be had for cheap...cheaper that red lobster crap...but taste much fresher and better! and the fact that they are located the Beverly Hills.
With a table of 7 we had eight dishes ($550+), their seafood was very fresh, but that's about all the good I have to say. Their "Secret Kitchen" is a sham because the only secret is that they don't know how to cook proper seafood the Asian way.
The garlic noodles were good, but my mom, dad, aunts, uncles, myself can and have made it for years! their lobsters were undercooked to the point where the middle was not cooked. Their crab are the same ones I get for $3/lb at 99 Ranch market, so it would be $6 max....plus labor, maybe $10, not the $40 we paid. The crab was NOT FRESH, the meat was cooked until the meat evaporated and all that was left was the "fibers" of what used to be crab meat, all their food lacks the "Wok Air" http://en.wikipedia.or... . The lobster was lacking... the presentation was nice, but just because they give you the head/skull and two claw meat (aka, the untastiest meat of the lobster) doesn't mean they gave you a whole lobster. I felt ripped off with each bite.
The salmon plate which was labeled at a "large plate" was anything but large, I have made much better salmon bought from Costco with a George Foreman Grill and it would not have cost me anywhere near the $38... for a piece 5X bigger! I seriously wanted to wait for the waiter to come over asked "how's everything" and just eat the salmon in one bite and tell him it SUCKED!
If you want good authentic Asian seafood go here:
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
with what we paid at Crustacean, we could've eaten at least 3 times and had MUCH MORE & BETTER food!
Like I said before, it's like having a stick shoved up you a$$, it's not for everyone. If you like a stick up you butt, come here, if you want good food go somewhere else, message me, I'll give you some suggestions in the SGV, you will spend about $150-200, you can give me $200, that would still save you $100.
Crap-stacean is an experience, not a bad one, just not great, try it once with a significant other, large group not recommended.

Took my mommy here for her bday, and she loved it! I've been here a number of times, and every time, it's been a great dining experience. It's a place where you will blow your monthly paycheck. Order the dungeness crab and garlic noodles; their 2 most famous dish! It's soooooooooooooooo delicious!!! I always run into celebs when I'm here...last time I saw Paris Hilton eating with her sister Nicki. The decor is beautiful too, service is great, not like other asian places, given the fact that it's vietnamese owned...the An's family. Take someone special to eat here, since it's a special occassion type of place. =)

Way to0 expensive for the food they serve. Prepare to spend $100 per person with drinks and the food is not that great.
I first fell in love with Crustaceans in San Francisco and when I moved back down to LA, I had to try the fancier one in Beverly Hills. The restaurant is very beautiful compared the SF one. They have a sunken koi pond/river that is pretty cool. A very nice place to take a date.
The must have dishes: Garlic noodles and dungeness crab! The crab is huge and the meat is very juicey and tender, and incredibly flavorful...it's almost orgasmic to me. Goes well with the garlic noodles together. If you wait to eat the garlic noodles and it cools down, its kind of sticky and not so good.
It's definitely not a casual place I'd go to all the time (pricey), but I'd definitely take a special date here.
I may be Asian, but I ain't blind. This place is all about show. Everything is beautiful in here. From the floor to the ceilings, even their waitresses and bartenders. Everyone, everything is beautiful. But I can't take them home with me and I came here for the food. The food is good. Everything is just good to very good. But the bill is ridiculous! What's up with those prices? I know my eyes are slanted, but that don't mean I can't see where they put those decimals... or the extra zeros. You're definitely paying for the view of the restaurant. I don't know how you can justify such simple seafood cuisines with such high prices. I would come here again... if it were comped.

The garlic noodles are the bomb. I go to Crustacean for the garlic noodles alone. If nothing else, get some garlic noodles when you go to Crustacean. You will not be disappointed.
As for the rest of the food, it's pretty darn good. Overpriced,* but very good. What you're mostly paying for is the decor and beautiful people. And I must say, the glass stream with real fish underneath is particularly impressive. There's also a live band that plays there at night. In my opinion, they need to stop with that live band. It's very noisy and makes it difficult to talk. Not exactly romantic.
At the end of the day, I highly recommend Crustacean and will continue to go there. I guess I'm a sucker for good food and decor, even if it is a bit overpriced.
*Crustacean's "special" crab is very good indeed, but you can get the same thing at any decent Chinese restaurant in the San Gabriel Valley for half the price or less.
I came here for Valentine's day w/ my bf and rubbed elbows (literally) with celebrities like Xzibit, Chris Rock, etc. Aside from being awestruck, we enjoyed the atmosphere and the food, although it is plenty overpriced for the mediocre dishes they serve. The garlic noodles were so-so. I'm a fan of garlic, but it was overpowering in this dish. I agree with other Yelpers that everything tends to be on the greasy side.
Overall, we expected a lot more for a place that caters to Hollywood.
I don't like this place. I was there once and had a bad experience so I'm never going back. Did my bad experience warrant a boycott? Read on and be the judge.
Here is the story: My wife and I were going to take our daughter there to celebrate her graduation from college. It was an occasion. I had researched the restaurant in advance and was aware of their dress code so we were all dressed appropriately: occasion dresses for my wife and daughter, sport coat, tie, etc. for me. We had a reservation. When we arrived we were treated nicely and given a good table toward the back of the first floor just to the right of a party of four. All was going well until about midway through our salads when this guy, I'll call him Fred, walks in off the street, spots the party next to us and joins them. Now, Fred is not dressed for a restaurant. Fred is dressed for beach volleyball; Hawaiian shirt, shorts, rubber sandals. He is perhaps ten years younger than the rest of the group, but they welcome him warmly and invite him to eat with them. Very soon a waiter appeared and while I did not hear the exact words that were said it was clear the waiter informed Fred of his inappropriate attire. The party protested and assured the waiter that Fred was so highly evolved that he didn't need to accommodate any arbitrary dress code. The waiter left and within a few minutes another man - presumably higher up the chain of command - came over to discuss Fred's attire, or lack of it. Again the party protested, and again the employee backed down. The next man to visit the table was clearly the head honcho, the big cheese, the main dude, the capo de tutti capos. His appearance brings with it a sudden change in both attitude and policy; he is prostrate with humility, absolutely grief-stricken about the behavior of his employees, and all but grovels at Fred's feet. Not only does Fred stay, he comps the table a round of drinks and dessert.
So, who is this Fred that he can bring about so sudden a change in restaurant policy? Beats the hell out of me. He wasn't Brad Pitt, I know that. What was it about him that commanded such obeisance? I'll tell you one thing for sure, he wasn't you or me. If you or I had shown up dressed similarly we'd have been directed to the nearest Denny's, no ifs, ands or buts. Did we get free drinks? No. Did we get the time and attention of four or five different employees? No. Did Mr. Big come over to our table to apologize or ask us how we felt about sitting next to Gilligan and the Howells? No. We didn't have the juice.
Now I'm not big on dress codes. I'm a casual kind of guy. But my feeling is that if a restaurant, or anyplace else, has a dress code it should cover everyone, not just regular folks who lack "connections".
Am I pissed? Damn right! Not only will I not go to Crustacean again, I am going to encourage you not to as well. Odds are you don't have the juice either, and at those prices they need more than a pretend dress-code and koi.
the beneath-the-footpath koi pond is cool, and me and my fellow bears were lucky to score a nice table in the back, right near the patio but well-secluded from the other diners. while perusing the menu, we were lucky enough to be graced by the executive chef (and perhaps owner??), Chef Helene, who recommended tuna tacos, the Maine lobster salad (with mango) and of course, the dungeness crab. we also tried the garlic noodles. everything was fine, and the tuna tacos were particularly bear-licious. the items are pricey, but if you order three entrees per every four attendees (especially if you are into sharing and splitting appetizers etc.), you can keep costs down a bit. For parking, I suggest skipping the valet and trying the garage across the street (closes at midnight, I think), or finding metered parking in the lots off SM Blvd.
Took some visitors here for the "LA" dining experience, and they absolutely loved it. The restaurant itself is very aesthetically pleasing, so chicks will automatically love this place. They are famous for their crabs, which was delicious but little too oily for me. If you ever wonder whatever happened to a once famous celebrity, you can probably find some here on any given weeknight. I almost forgot to mention that our waiter was awesome! I think it's one of those places where you would think it's overrated and overpriced if you had to pay, but you would love this place if someone paid for your meal and your $15 appletini.

Once I stepped foot into the restaurant, I was vastly overwhelmed. The smell of seafood (read: fishy) was strong, the band was ear-achingly loud, the river-like koi aquarium under the glass floor was captivating, and the staffs were pleasant on the eyes.
We were led through to the back of the restaurant where it turned into a 2 story tropical villa. We sat on the 2nd floor at a table that's regularly for 4 but they added a chair on the end for our party of 5. The arrangement ended up being a bad idea because we could barely fit all of our orders on the table.
We wanted tap water, but somehow the waiter misinterpreted our water choice and brought a big bottle of Fiji water. We let it go. Our party shared 2 roasted crabs from the secret kitchen, 2 orders of the garlic noodles, the chilean sea bass, and the chicken with truffle risotto. It's hard to be on your best behavior when eating crab. I found myself licking my fingers often.
The garlic noodles were indeed amazing. The crab, however, was mediocre. The meat of the crab was bland and the crab was not the freshest. I guess if you're not Asian, this is as good as it gets on the west side of LA. The sea bass was quite tasty. I liked the sauce it came with. The chicken was just chicken...nothing really special.
Overall, I was disappointed. I expected much more and Crustacean couldn't deliver it. It's also incredibly overpriced. $13 for a veggie side?! I'll pass.
Tip: Park at the 2 story metered parking structure across the street. It's free after 6 PM.
(More like 3.5 rounded up to 4)
The overall experience was enjoyable and welcoming. Our server was friendly and even a bit amusing. He mentioned that for first timers, we must try something from the special kitchen menu and the garlic noodles which were pretty good.
The interesting part is that members of the An family would make rounds and chat with the regulars. My girlfriend mentioned that the restaurant had the feel of a place run by an Asian mob. I agreed!!
Not to mention that this old old man, who apparently was famous (not sure), tried to pick up on my girl when I went to the restroom. I came back just in time to stop the geezer! =)
Here is what we ordered:
1. Tapas Starter (comprised of coconut shrimp, fresh crab wontons, dumplings and beef satay)
2. Garlic noodles with large grilled prawns
3. Filet Mignon
4. Chocolate Molten Lava cake with vanilla bean ice cream.
Note: the Fiji water is $7.00.
Plus:
1. Great service!!!
2. Interesting dining experience
3. Romantic
Minus:
1. Overpriced. For sure.
Parking:
1. Valet is about $8... yikes!!!
2. Find street meter parking which is free after 6PM.
Overrated & Overpriced.
The cocktails are $15 and taste like they put a a teeny tiny drop of alcohol...rip off.
The garlic noodle are good...I agree! The crab is just okay...not great and not worth the $$$. I got the drunken crab.....I'd rather get a more meaty crab elsewhere. Heck, I can probably make my own at home.
Lobster Garlic noodles are good, but lobster seemed to be a bit overcooked.
The dessert was horrendous. We got the lava cake....yeah it was okay...no big deal...every restaurant has it these days. Then we got the pinapple fritter....they used a canned pineapple. It was one giant "O" deep fried with a tiny scoop of ice cream.....unacceptable for pricey restaurant like this.
The ambiance is definitely nice. I lovethe floor where you can see the fishies swimming. The hostesses have interesting outfits and they are all tall and stick thin. Waiters also don't look half bad. I guess that's just LA???
For sure will not be going back and super glad I didn't have to foot the bill for this place!

I have had many dinners at this place....I always get the garlic noodles and the lobster, my fav.......Oh, and they have good wine. I prefer seating downstairs....Overall good experience...
The food was a major let down. Everything was so greasy and gross. Prices were to be expected for that neighborhood. I thought the decor was a disappointment as well, something you'd expect to find in some tacky Beverly Hills mansion. Clearly, no taste. The blonde girls at the hostess stand act like Catherine Deneuve in Indochine, flailing about with their oversized vietnamese gowns, albeit with a fraction of Catherine's elegance and grace.
N.B. The menu's first 8 pages is a (humorous) autobiographical accolade of the An family.

I have been to both the San Francisco and Beverly Hills locations. The decorations in this location is far superior to the SF location, with the koi aquarium in the floor beneath. The atmosphere is very nice and sophisciated, but I don't think it justifies paying an exorbitant price for some very average food. Everything was very garlic-y...you can't really mess up with garlic. Even their famous, secret recipe garlic noodles didn't strike me as anything special. Most importantly, the service is terrible. I felt like the waiter favored certain people over others, and we felt ignored...

ITS AIGHT.
So me and my friends decided to come here as our "winning" dinner after we had a wager over bowling and losers paid for winner's dinner at Crustacean.
Honestly, the only thing good was the garlic noodles and even for the price is was sooooooooooooo not worth it.
There is a small bar with some live music playing and we hung out there while we waited for our table. The decor was a dark, almost "old school" nice home in Vietnam kinda feel to it. The whole girls wearing "Ao Dai" was a bit of a turn off. Even the nicest restaurants in Vietnam don't have girls wearing Ao Dai.
Most of us had the crab and garlic noodles. A friend of mine wanted the chicken and even the waiter said "no.. you just come here for the crab and noodles.. dont' get the chicken" but he REALLY wanted the chicken, so the waiter finally gave in and said alright.
I can see why some people might like this place.. they'd like it if they never had Asian style seafood. Non-Asian style seafood is usually pretty boring. Steamed or baked with drawn butter and sauces. Or it is pan seared or deep fried in batter. How boring is that? Of course you'd like something like The Dungness Crab here. The crab was definitely overcooked and a little too flakey for my taste. The noodles were good, but it wasn't a "party in my mouth" type of taste to it. I was expecting more kick for garlic noodles.
Would I come back? If I was in the neighborhood and someone else was paying....then maybe.
So disappointing.
All that talk about Leonardo DiCaprio loving the garlic noodles got me here. We were seated next to the Tia and Tamera Mowry (Sister, Sister).
The food was greesy without the flavor. The garlic noodles were hardly garlicky at all. UGK!
Spend $50 per person without ordering drinks and nothing we ordered was good.
The koi fish swimming on the floor was neat but that was it.
The best part of Crustacean is in their decor and I like the underground aquarium.I have eaten at this location on three separate occasions and this restaurant does not impressed me.I'll give them credit for the decor..although I have seen much more impressive decor of the same nature in other countries.
The rave about their food is much too generous...garlic noodles, dungeness crabs,lobsters....
These are all standard and typical dishes...and let me honestly say I have had much tastier garlic noodles in your unknown restaurants.I had to bring the garlic noodles up since everyone seems to rave on about them as if they are the only place that supposedley make fresh garlic noodles. It's going to take alot more than just garlic noodles...dungeness crabs and lobsters to impress me from a higher end restaurant.
The service is above average(not great) from most of our visits and the servers were attentive.
This restaurant may be great for many..but I choose to take my business elsewhere for the same types of food.

Went to this place with my boyfriend and his parents and it was one of the best meals I have ever had! The decor is fabulous with a koi aquarium in the floor beneath your feet. The bartenders were nice and attentive while we waited for our table. Once seated our waiter was amazing and made sure we loved everything we got. Definitely order something from the secret kitchen which is a kitchen only family members of the restaurant are allowed inside of, because the lobster and their signature garlic noodles from there are to die for! This place is not a cheap place by any means but if you want to splurge this place is the place to go hands down. One of the best dining experiences of our lives.

My girlfriends and I come here about 1-2 times a month like pyschos. We love it THAT much here. Plus $40 a plate is normal for us, huh...;P I have tried almost everything on the menu, but after each thing was tasted once, each time I come back I rotate between the Garlic Lobster w/ garlic noodles special and the Cracked Dungeness Crab. These two meals make my life. We get monstrous cravings and call up my homie in reservations a few hours before, and we get our fix. Sign we are that obsessed with the food: order the full meal, eat it there, and order another full plate to go - $80 minimum/person = obsessed. If that doesn't display to an outsider how good this food is, I dont know what will!!

Went for lunch with my sister. She wanted to see the fish tank. The decor was quite nice but the food was just ok. For the price, it was definitely not worth it. The famous garlic noodles was over-cooked and too soft. We had one of the specials that included the noodles with lobstar, crawfish, shrimp, and mussels. The portion was quite small for 50.00. I definitely won't be going back. There are other upscale vietnamese restaurants that far surpass this place.
Really Terrific SE Asian Fusion. Homemade Noodles. Excellent Market Fish selection. Try either the Pepper Crab or Lobster. Both wonderful. Great winelist. Service a la perfection by a team of professionals. Very crowded, although we went on a Friday night and had a reservation. We did have to wait about 20 mins to be seated, but with the bar our front we had a couple of quick cocktails to take the sting out of the wait.

This is a great place to entertain clients in. Great food, ambiance and overall experience. I've dined here several times, and always ordered the same thing: the steamed crabs and garlic noodles. It's $8 for a plate of noodles, a killer moneymaker as every table orders at least two portions of it. Expect to spend around $60 per person here, more if you order alcoholic drinks.

Apparently I don't remember this, but my first Crustacean trip was when I was 7 years old at the SF location...the waiter gave me an ice cream sundae on the house. So I guess you could say Crustacean and I go way back...we have a history, if you will.
Dungeness crab + garlic noodles make me a happy happy gal.

Love the place. My fiance and I use it to celebrate special occasions since it is a bit pricey. The garlic noodles are the bomb! My favorite thing about the place. I've event tried to imitate them at home just using an insane amount of butter (which i'm sure is why they are addicting) but I can't get the recipe close. Damn the secret kitchen!
Otherwise the giant prawns & garlic noodles and the special (half a lobster, garlic noodles, and shrimp) is what I usually get. It's some fancy name that I always forget. You can even order it when it's not a special that day and I recommend you get the sauce on the side as you don't want the sauce to drown the taste of the garlic noodles. That's the best part!
I love the cracked crab too but I'm not usually willing to get that messy. I also recommend the Dr. Loosen Blue Slate Reisling to go with any of the seafood dishes. Usually only about $35/bottle.
You can stalk up here usually for $12/bottle: http://www.lawineco.co... but just found out their inventory changes every 20-30 days. They're out now so just keep checking in every so often for more!
This spot has thee best garlic noodles! I love this spot but it is a bit fancy shmancy. Overall the seafood is the bomb and I most definitely like the neighborhood!
I have to confess I've only been here once, and I generally don't do reviews until I've eaten at a place at least 3 times..
.... but those garlic noodles....... NO OTHER PLACE can compare. I can't even remotely enjoy this dish anywhere else. I remember an article where Warren Beatty mentioned them, and I can see why.
Probably one of the best Southeast Asian restaurants I've been to that don't overkill the menu with peanut-sauce dishes. My party also ordered the peppered crab, which I think I fell more in love with the novelty of eating it than the dish itself. We also ordered some beef dish (could have been some tenderloin with tomato dish), but I was too into the noodles and crab to care. The only DOWNSIDE to both these dishes was the grease factor. I was so greased up I could have lubed the rust off a trail hitch. In fact, I had to make 2 trips to the bathroom to wash my hands, but I can't complain, because the talent at the bar in front was well worth the trip both times.
I had some coconut cake for dessert, which was also phenom.
In terms of atmosphere, VERY Beverly Hills. Anywhere else, except Vegas, and it would be considered a little over the top. Love the little fishpond floor. Didn't love the 15 minute wait despite our reservations, but again, the talent at the bar was decent.
Want to impress your friends and clients? bring them here. Want to impress a female date? Don't...... until it's the 3rd date and you've passed the I-don't-care-if-u-have-garlic-breath phase of your relationship.

I love the decor of this place...probably because I'm into saltwater fish tanks. Anyway I brought my family here for dinner once and I was not too impressed with the food. I think the whole dungness crab was way overpriced and something that I can probably cook myself at home. The garlic noodles were good but not the best that I've had. It was a good experience though since it's rare that my family goes out for such an extravagent meal...especially since it's chinese food.

My dad first took me to the Beverly Hills location years ago. Impressed is hardly the word. You walk in and immediately notice the floor fish tank! Swanky indeed. The BH location just oozed the smell of money. I'm accustomed to getting less food the more you pay, but that's not the case with this restaurant. I usually order their prawns (to die for!) and another time I had their steak. I'll never forget a hilarious time when I went w/ one of my friends. She ordered the prawns w/ a side of garlic noodles. After about 5 minutes, I noticed that she had just been eating the noodles and not touching the prawns. I asked her what was wrong and why she wasn't eating the prawns. She replies, "Because I can't open them." Classic! Turns out that you need the waiter to do it for you.
Don't order anything else other than the cracked Dungeness crab, garlic noodles, and shrimp toast. You'll be disappointed with the other items on their menu. But I'm still giving them 5 stars cuz the crab is off the mother f'in hook. You'll be screaming while eating it cuz its so damn good. It's a bit greasy so you may feel kinda gross afterwards but it's worth it. There's some secret Vietnamese jizz sauce in here, I hurrrrd.

So-so. The food was decent for that level of a restaurant. I went for dineLA and found the menu rather irrelevant. Eggplant ratatouille? Okay.. I mean, they couldn't even hook it up with the garlic noodles. I'm not asking for one of those dinner plate crabs!
I'd give it another chance to try their actual menu, but I'm after this lunch, I'm not aching to go anytime soon.

Basically, if you want the whole "Hollywood" scene you go to Crustaceans. I was not impressed with their "Secret" room nor their crab. The garlic noodles were good but that's it. The portions were small and if your not dress to impress the service sucks! I'm pushing it by giving it a 2 star rating but its only because of the garlic noodles. If you want good Chinese food with awesome crab go to newport seafood restaurant or any other restaurant in SGV.

The food here is not as good as the original Crustacean in their San Fran location, but I still give it a 5 due to the overall experience. decent food, a little over hyped, but great service.
i ordered the mussels and the garlic noodles. 5 little mussels and buttered garlic toast for $11. yikes. no wonder the An family is a multi-million dollar empire.
nice place for a date, but if you're looking to eat some great seafood... i recommend bringin the AMEX platinum or heading into the san gabriel valley and checking out a chinese seafood place.
