This was our fifth and final stop on the 11/22/09 cupcake tour.
We were already very full of cupcakes from the "Cupcake Crawl" so we took ours to go. It took us such a long time to make a decision because, seriously, the variety of cupcakes to choose from is so overwhelming... in a good way! Everything looks fabulous!
We agreed on an Oreo cupcake which, upon trying it later that evening, was amazing. The cupcake was huge and definitely the best value of the 5 places we went to on our tour. (BabyCakes, for instance, makes cupcakes about 1/3 the size of Crumbs but costs the same and doesn't even come close to how delicious the latter is!) The cake was moist and the frosting was distinctly Oreo-like with some Oreo cookies stuck in it.
I also ordered an $18 sample pack that contained a variety of 16 mini-cupcakes. I shared these with my parents. I personally ate the Grasshopper, Cookie Dough, Vanilla w/Vanilla Frosting, and Strawberry-Frosted Vanilla. The Grasshopper (chocolate cake w/green mint frosting) was so refreshing. The Cookie Dough was amazing - the cake was filled with thick, soft chocolate which was a pleasant surprise! The latter two were simple and delicious.
This was my first and (so far) only time going to Crumbs but next time I'm back in town I'll be stopping by one of the other ones to see how amazing the other locations are!
cupcakes big enough for people to share and creative flavors for you to try. I like their Oreo's cupcakes. I just felt a strong food coma after though. It is probably 1000 calories?!!?
The frosting is not as smooth and delicate as Chikalicious but Crumbs is a good place to go with a bunch of friends to share a gigantic cupcake. Besides, it is everywhere in the city now you could barely escape!
Stopped by with my cousin while she working in NYC. I love having people to explore food with!
She opted for a plain-jane vanilla cake with buttercream icing and sprinkles. High marks for the frosting and cake moistness. I had the more adventurous half-baked cupcake, cause I am a fool for the fancy chocolate goodies. It was chocolate with vanilla pudding stuff inside, iced in chocolate and topped with cookie/brownie/bakery crumbles. WOW. It was almost too sweet for me. Almost. Nothing really is. It was so soft, especially with the filling, that I was quite glad to have a plate and a fork to tackle it. The icing was rich and had a smooth butter aftertaste. The crumblies put it over the top into decadence.
I could see stopping by for another cupcake to nosh on over a weekend at home, one quarter at a time, or picking up a mini 12-pack for company to impress them with "my" creativity.
I have to start off with saying that I'm not big on sweets. I don't know what has happened. I guess my palette has evolved, but I am always one to turn down dessert.
I came here for a nice snack after class one day. As a Howard Stern fan, I had to order the Artie Lange cupcake. It has vanilla filling and chocolate hard frosting with sprinkles. And hey, part of the $3.75 goes to LifeBeat, a charity against HIV/AIDS.
I also ordered a large ice coffee ($2.75), which was actually above average.
I'm not cupcake expert, but it was pretty good. It was so sweet it hurt my teeth. There wasn't too much filling that it just overpowered the entire cupcake. You definitely need a decent amount of sponge cake. Not a cheap cupcake, but it's mighty huge and can even hold you over as a meal.
I can't rate the cupcakes at this particular Crumbs location because I only got drinks from here. What I love about this place is their little hidden seating area in the back that's quite large. I had a fussy and hungry baby and I swear this was the only place I could go in the neighborhood that was quiet enough to give her what she wanted. Maybe this place was nearly empty late at night because the reviews don't seem too flattering, but I actually love the back area. I love Crumbs cupcakes in general and just staring at the Butterfinger and Crunch Bar cupcakes through the glass was enough for me.
My girlfriend bought me two cupcakes, cause she felt like acting nice to me for a change I guess. They do look beautiful and she splurged on upgrading the packaging container. They should just make the upgraded box standard.
Onto the cupcakes, which were extremely subpar. To start, the sponge is dry and flavorless, kind of like sponge cake from your local market (in Queens! local market in Manhattan is like Dean and DeLuca, WTF). The toppings and frosting are unbearably sweet. I don't have a picky sweet tooth, as I eat the frosting of Carvel ice cream cakes for absolutely no good reason. I think I need the extra calories, getting too lanky from biking. Pointless tangent aside, cupcakes from Crumbs are simply not worth the time and effort to acquire, go to One Girl or Magnolia instead.
I had always wanted to try the cupcakes at Crumbs since they always look so big.. and fluffy... and frosting-y... and sweet.
I've been here about three times now - mostly because I was in the mood for any kind of cupcakes and it happened that I was near Crumbs.
Don't get me wrong - their cupcakes are quite tasty and looking amazing. I've had the pistachio and oreo cupcakes. The only thing is that their cupcakes are somewhat dry and crumbly ( duh with the name..), with the frosting being the only selling point. The frosting in itself tastes sweet, but the texture is too much like the stuff you would get from that frosting in the supermarket.
All in all, I do like that they have more of a selection of flavors to choose from, but not my top cupcake place to go to.
Oh hell yeah! This is another place opening to feed the cupcake craze in the area. The cupcakes here are mostly large size and run about $2.50 each. Their butter cream icing is delicate with a hint of natural vanilla. The cakes are light, moist, and buttery. About half of the cupcakes have fillings inside, but I chose just the vanilla with butter cream, because that is the ultimate challenge for some bakers. Some of the other cupcake places in the area taste like they use powder mix batter, but here the batter tastes like it is made from scratch by a professional. There is seating in the back and at the bar up front. It costs double the price of one of the cupcake trucks, but the quality is better.
I was pretty excited to try the cupcakes at Crumbs. They look and sound amazing -- big, fluffy, colorful, with choices like caramel apple, fluffernutter, and peanut butter cup.
I had a tough time deciding but eventually settled on the cookie dough cupcake. And that's where my love affair with Crumbs ended. It tasted like...nothing. Sweet. Kinda dry. Kinda bland. There just wasn't anything special about it. Maybe I'll try another flavor one of these days, but I'm not rushing back.
For now, I'm still firmly on team Magnolia...
CUPCAKE HEAVEN.
FOr under $5 you can get a giant cupcake that will most def. fill you up!
With so many flavours to choose from its hard to make a final choice! I have mostly wound up with the oreo frosted one, its just OH SO GOOD.
A once in a while treat that is just hard to stay away from/
i LOVE cupcakes!!! i was not going to leave nyc without getting some. a friend had suggested this place so we came to check it out. cute little shop with plenty of different cupcakes to choose from. i got the red velvet and apple cobbler cupcakes. thankfully the cupcakes did not disappoint because both were delicious!
How Crumbs was ever successful enough to become a chain is far beyond my grasp. The cake part of the cupcakes and cakes is dense, dry, and flavorless. The frosting is the consistency of nursery school paste and doesn't taste much different (ahem--not that I could ever possibly know what paste tastes like), and the frosting-to-cake ratio is far too great.
These are some of the absolute worst baked goods I've ever tasted, and every time I do eat something from here (the inevitable go-to for goodbye parties in my lab, apparently) I fume thinking about all the wasted calories I've just consumed. If I'm going to get fat/develop coronary artery disease, it's going to be from eating really delicious things like bacon cheeseburgers and mac & cheese and drinking my weight in bourbon, not from this crap.
The "frosted black & white cookies" are AMAZING, my friends think there's crack in them. Now make sure you got that, the FROSTED ones with cupcake icing, not the traditional icing ones. And get there early, they tend to sell out between 4-6pm.
This location has good AC and was playing Dave Brubeck as I write this...so why 2 stars? Over-hyped cupcakes. Crappy-@ss wifi-connection. Then there's something depressing about the sitting area...it should be nice, with tiles floors and lacquered tables, but since it's hidden all the way in the back, it's always mostly empty, and the staff seems to never really clean it. Or maybe something about all that brown paint just makes the place feel, well, crumby. Goodness, I love puns.
Final FYI, the University & 14th St. outpost, though lacking seating has fresher goods and a more energetic staff, probably due to more traffic there.
If you're forced at gunpoint to eat a cupcake at Crumbs, well, get one of the plain ones. Those expensive specialty ones with oreos and bells and whistles aren't worth it. They're dry and overly sweet.
Now, if you look at the reviews for Sugar Sweet Sunshine... You shouldn't even be on the Crumbs page right now.
PS: Not tryna be a hater here. I really enjoyed a cupcake I bought my ex for Valentine's day at Crumbs. Too bad I can't remember what it was. I do remember, though, that the cupcake tasted familiar...
I'll leave you with that... ;)
Simply Delicious Cupcakes!
A great variety of giant cupcakes for about $4. I personally love the Oreo and Cookie Dough flavors. Recently showed this place to my folks when they came to visit. They love it too! Awesome little bakery!
I totally forgot to yelp about this place. I thought I already did for some reason.... I'm sure it happens to some Yelpers! Had I yelped about it 3 months ago, then probably I would've given it 4 stars, but now that I have just eaten higher quality cupcakes at Sweet Revenge, I can't give you more than 3 stars.
What I initially liked about Crumbs is that their cupcakes are unquestionably larger than their competitors' cupcakes, which is why their slightly high price $3.75 seems justified. Some may argue that cupcakes should be smaller because they look cuter and shouldn't destroy your appetite with its enormous size, but when it comes to sweets I support oversized portion....only if it's TASTY, that is. This place represents the epitome of American sweets.... massive, very sweet, colorful with artificial coloring and flavors, covered with very rich, heavy, artery-clogging and fattening cream, etc.... appetizing? Nevertheless their cupcakes are aesthetically beautiful, and their wide selection of flavors gives us way too many options to choose from. It's pretty overwhelming!
Now, the biggest and most important question. Do they taste good?
The answer: slightly above average, but not amazing. I've only had cappuccino and cookie dough but they were a tad too sweet and the flavors weren't strong enough to distinguish between the two. They were both good, but I expected stronger flavor especially from cappuccino. And although I thought I love big cupcakes, I realized that they are too big even for me after all. I'm willing to give it another try, but different flavor next time!
It's hard to pick a flavor because they all look effing nice. Each are usually $3.75 but they're huge. They are a bit on the dry side, but I don't mind them using less butter/eggs. Pretty nice for birthday celebrations: stick a candle in one for a minicake.
Pistachio cupcake! Hello!
I almost got fired from my job because the raspberry frosted cupcake tapped into my inner child. Ordering from them was painless and service was quick in store. The vanilla with M&Ms cupcake was good but I had to split the rest with my rented cabana boy because it was ginormous. Good if you like a sugar rush or are a fan of frosting like me.
I make awesome cupcakes ;-)
I had a Crumbs cupcake today for the first time in 2 1/2 years. $4 down the drain and a half-eaten cupcake later, I was reminded of why I had made it a point to steer clear of the bakery chain (despite my sweet tooth and the fact that their shops seem to have sprouted everywhere). Here's the deal:
- Cupcakes are usually stale. Like Rey P, I have noticed flies in the display case
- Cake is dry
- Too much cake; not enough frosting
- Cream cheese frosting on red velvet is not thick or sweet enough to hide the awful cake
- Price: a whopping $4 (grr)
- 500+ calories and your cupcake craving wont even be satisfied
Yuck. Sickeningly sweet frosting on top of a muffin. Couldn't get through a couple of bites. (Tried the Oreo and a peanut butter cupcake)
Too bad because the cupcakes look very appetizing.
Do yourself a favour and head to Chickalicious instead.
Extremely moist cupcakes but overly sweet frosting
This location has seating. The decor is modern and very simple as large stock photos of cupcakes adorn the wall. For an afternoon my Asian social networking group gathered here for sweets. For the sweet tooth lover you've got to have their cupcakes! My favorites are the classic chocolate and strawberry swirl which I've ordered to go. There is always a long line. I enjoyed both cupcakes the next day which they were still moist and fresh. It's made with the perfect consistency!
I rate it four stars because the uni-sex bathroom is locked which patrons need a key from the staff. I was waiting for an eternity thinking that someone passed out in the bathroom as I had no idea that a key is required. If one is not aware that a key is required to utlize the bathroom, than patrons would be standing outside waiting for an eternity.
Crumbs is great when you want to choose from a great variety of rich, decent-sized cupcakes. Sadly, the renovations for this particular location loses the unique touch of the old appearance. I miss the curtain leading to the restrooms, the mirror along the top of the walls, the chalkboard menu, and especially the wifi.
What really turned me off was the disgruntled look when we were brought a small black & white cookie and we said we meant the big classic one. I guess they were having a hard day (at least, I hope that's the reason).
The first time I ever had Crumbs cupcakes was a couple years ago at this shop in Greenwich village. It's really nothing special, and I was surprised to find that it became a nationwide chain.
I'm not a big fan of the cupcakes being humongous... I mean, did I order a mini-cake? I know some people like the size but I didn't. I guess the size makes up for the price, I'll give them that. I was kind of grossed out by the cupcakes with chunks of candy on top, but my friends seemed enthralled so I could be weird about that...
I had a red velvet cupcake, the standard by which I rate cupcake places. It was... just okay. Nothing special, and nothing to go nationwide about. I guess the fact that they're huge and pretty counts a lot to people. Yay, America!
My biggest gripe about these cupcakes is that they're weighed down by decadent frosting. I like frosting to complement the cake, not the other way around.
A handful of Crumbs shops have opened in LA, including near me... I might give it a second chance, but I don't see how different it could be.
2.5 Stars. Essentially, this Crumbs sucks a little less than the one up the road at University Place, near Union Square, but honestly it's not much better.
After dinner with my uncle on Sunday (he's cooking now, and I'm slightly afraid), he and I walked over to this particular Crumbs which is literally a stone's throw from his front door. I got a red velvet and he got an original. I took mine home, rather than be-speckle myself with red dust.
The new fascination with cupcakes and overproliferation thereof is leading to bigger and bigger cupcakes; which is exactly why I was completely unable to fit my mouth around the cupcake when I got it home. If its a cupcake, then its hand food and hand food should not require a knife, and/or fork to facilitate eating as their large, somewhat dry cupcake required. Furthermore, the inherent idea of the cupcake is to get frosting AND cake in each bite. Crumbs homage's to sugar fly directly in the face of this important cupcake tenet.
Now I might be a "city boy," but I've had at lot of good red velvet cake in my day and I know it when I taste it. The red velvet cupcake at Crumbs doesn't even compare with the good red velvet I've had. It should be moist with a thick , somewhat tangy cream cheese frosting...I didn't get that.
I'll be happy when this nonsense is over.
From the Cappuccino and the Banana Split to the Reese's Peanut Butter and the Oreo to the classic lemon-vanilla buttercream Cupcakes, Crumbs not only had the widest variety, but the best in town. Larger than most, Crumbs' Cupcakes are light and fluffy, with smooth, velvety frosting that melts in your mouth. Note: go for the Hostess-style or Red Velvet. And check out the fabulous Crumbs website for more flavors and locations around the city.

At 3.75 a pop you get a huge cupcake of sexiness. I absolutely love the red velvet and always come back for more. I love where its located and the place is adorable.
I had a friend visiting on her birthday and I took her here as a suggestion from a couple of friends who have done their manhattan cupcake research. We were not dissappointed.
The guy who was working was very friendly and even gave my friend her cupcake for free since it was her birthday (they don't normally do that).
The only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because I didn't personally taste anything as I have given up chocolate for lent and my friend go the the health bar cupcake so I couldn't try it. She LOVED it though. I plan on going soon after lent is over so I can finally taste a Crumbs cupcake.
As a disclaimer, I tout the title of World's Pickiest Person when it comes to desserts, cupcakes included. If I'm going to ingest half of my daily caloric content on something that will keep me satisfied for two hours, tops, it better be good. The cupcakes at Crumbs fall into the "Waste of Calories" category. Not just because they are huge, but they are huge and have a certain processed, massed-produced taste to them. If you blindfolded me and asked me what kind of cupcake I was eating, I would probably have a hard time telling you exactly what it is.
I've tried a few cupcakes in order to give the place a fair chance: the Oreo, Pumpkin, and Carrot cupcakes (all on separate occasions). As a general observation, the icing is way too cloying and doesn't really taste like anything besides sugar and the cake is way too dry. The cake for the Pumpkin cupcake was borderline stale. The Carrot was probably the best of the lot - the cake part was alright, but the icing was still too sweet (although it gets style points for decoration/cute factor).
From an aesthetic standpoint, it's easy to become mesmerized by the array of colorfully adorned cupcakes in the glass display case. But cupcakes are for eating, not admiring from afar (at least that's my personal philosophy.) And for $4, you can definitely get better dessert or sweets elsewhere. Whenever I see people walking around, toting their transparent Crumbs bags to show the world the $30 they spent on half a dozen cupcakes, my heart goes out to them. In all seriousness though, I'm really surprised that Crumbs has such consistently high ratings across the various locations on Yelp.
With that said, I will still venture to Crumbs for the coffee. The strong hazelnut coffee is probably the only memorable thing about the place.
When it comes to cupcakes, Crumbs is undoubtedly the best in it's class. Favorites are yummy Caramel Apple (contains real pieces of apple), Red Velvet and the Oreo cupcake. A little pricey spot, but cupcakes are really superior and worth the price.
You just HAVE to eat it ! Really delicious and well crafted cupcakes.
I was getting a Chipotle take-out in the hood and was just walking home when I chanced upon this Crumbs store. It must have been a while since I walked on this street for I'd totally forgotten Crumbs' existence here! (the other day I had to head to the UWS outlet - also because I happened to be at the Lincoln Center to get my Crumbs fix).
At 830pm, a lot of the cupcakes were sold out. I settled for a marshmellow chocolate cupcake. Great choice for there was melted mushmellows WITHIN the cupcake. Lovely lovely lovely!
Crumbs always satisfies a sugar crave :) and while I hate it that they provide brown bags for cupcakes to go, I love it that their icing doesn't really make a mess a la Magnolia's.
errrrrrrr....
My friend in class said that she had the best Red Velvet Cupcake here in Crumbs. So one day after I spent hours lusting over Le Creuset dutch ovens in Broadway Panhandler, I passed by Crumbs which is just a few steps away.
But boy, was I disappointed. Cream was too sweet that my teeth aches, and there are just not enough flavor in the cupcake itself. And the worst part is I paid friggin' 4 bucks for a stupid cupcake? An extra buck and I could've had a 12 at Gristedes and I'll probably be happier.
My friend loves it here, so we shared a red velvet. The only wow factor was its huge size and presentation. Everything else about it was dry and unimpressive. She said that it's usually a lot more moist than the one we ate, so I'll give Crumbs the benefit of the doubt and will come back for another try.
It's nice that there is seating to eat the huge cupcake and just relax with a cup of coffee.
I have become a huge Crumbs fan in general, but this particular location is my favorite. It has by far the coziest seating arrangement that I've seen. The cupcakes are orgasmically good. I could go on and on about them, but why bother? Just get yourself to a Crumbs, any Crumbs, and enjoy!
The cupcakes are to die for.
They have many delicious cupcakes and in great flavors (check out the website, they have sum listed but they have more)
-This location has seating in the back, you can also buy drinks here.
The reason this location in general gets 4 stars and not 5 is because once they run out of a flavors even if it's early in the day, they wont make bake anymore : (
This place totally rocks my socks off! It's every sweet tooth's fantasy come true. Visually, the cupcakes are stunning and the creations are very creative. I also love that they come in various sizes and there's something for everyone: You can go for a simple yellow cake with vanilla or chocolate frosting, or get something a little more over-the-top such as the Caramel Chew or Devil Dog). Can't decide? The sampler is a perfect way to taste the various cupcakes and it makes a great birthday gift for a friend or someone at the office.
I was a little disappointed with the red velvet offering (not a fan of the seemingly stale crumbs they sprinkle on top), but red velvet seems to be overrated these days. I absolutely loved the simple yellow cupcake with strawberry frosting. This was executed perfectly. Simple and elegant, and so moist.
Was back in the neighborhood after a month-long hiatus and it looks like this Crumbs has gotten a facelift to look more like their other locations. Out with the orange and hot pink color scheme, in with the brown and gold. I think the big orange awning is still there, but inside, all of the furniture has gotten an upgrade, they've replaced the harsh spotlight lighting in the back seating area with softer lights, and they've fixed the weird bathroom situation where the sink was outside the actual bathroom & and there was a jagged hole in the bathroom door, as if someone had tried to break in. All looks nice and neat and new.
Anyway, food and prices all look the same but they've given it some pleasant aesthetic updates.

I got the chocolate strawberry with filling cupcake. It icing and layer wasn't too sweet. I kind of wanted it to be sweet, buts okay. It looks more yummy than it looks. I also got a brownie which is sweet and good. '
I am sure they have more tasty treats. Well I'll save it for next time to try
This place is Awesome!!! They have a wide variety of cupcakes and muffins. I'm not really big fan of chocolate. So I normally get the Red Velvet cupcake... It's amazing! For $3.75 it's like getting your own mini cake. The size of the cupcakes are huge!
So good!! As I posted previously on Yelp, we went here the day after an extremely disappointing trip to Magnolia's.
Crumbs selection had me stunned, and I was a little disappointed that I had to choose just one. Looking back, I wish I got the taster pack. I'm pretty sure we would've polished them off with no problems. My husband ordered one of the normal sized cupcakes, and ate it on the way home, kicking himself the whole way for not getting the signature sized one.
I ended up getting a Lemon Meringue cupcake, and it was divine. I'm used to a tartier lemon curd, so that part was a little bland to me, but still good. The cake was so good, and the meringue on top complemented it nicely. I can't wait for our next trip back to try another one. Unless I give up in the meantime and just order some online!!
