My favorite cupcakes in the city!
Plus, the hazelnut coffee is REALLY good. One of the best cup of coffees I've ever had.
So I went to crumbs today after having a craving for cupcakes....and then I walked over there and got it and then I excitedly came back to work and wiped the drool from my mouth and grabbed a fork...I proceeded to go IN!
But then I stopped, after the first huge forkful. It tasted stale. The outsides of the cupcake were slightly over done and the icing on top of the super dry edges were not a good combination. The actual cake of the cup cake had to have been at least two days old and as much as I wanted to enjoy this delicious looking creation, I couldn't.
I gave up half way through.
I've never had such an experience at crumbs so I'll chalk it up the the slow season, and the fact that most people don't wanna pay 3.75 for a cupcake so it stays in the display longer.
They need to step it up though, they can't afford to charge so much. I wouldn't care if the cupcake was 1.25...but it was not.
I don't know what to tell you; its just not great.
Conveniently located down the street from my office, I'm guilty of stopping in a time or two for my sugar fix. I admit it. But, much like an alcoholic who just drank that PBR because it was so damn tempting, I inevitably end up feeling unsatisfied.
I mean, sure its calmed my sugar NEED, but it didn't do it with pizazz.... and in a city where sweet, delicious, handheld bites of heaven are readily available, there is just no excuse to go to Crumbs. The cake is weird - not dry precisely but not moist and fluffy either - and the icing ---- I'll say it ---- it fucking sucks.
Wrap all that mediocrity up with a high price tag and you have a two star establishment.
So why only one star? The cupcakes are gargantuan. America is fat enough without Crumbs' horrible cupcakes making us even fatter with their ginormous portions.
This place is only worth it if you're willing to lose your teeth sooner than you'd like. Something about smiles? Yeah, with no teeth.
I got the Elvis (vanilla with butter cream cheese frosting, swirled with peanut butter chips and icing) It was not a hunk of a cupcake.
Duncan Hines do cupcakes better.
I also got the hazelnut coffee. Not too bad, but for $2.10, it better not be too bad.
The pro of this place was that I was able to sit and read near Grand Central. Yes, an expensive weigh station. Thats all.
I don't know what I was smoking when I originally wrote this review, but it was obviously strong enough for me to think these cupcakes were good. The last time(s) I came by the icing was way too sweet and the cupcake was Sahara desert dry. For the price they're asking for these cupcakes, they must be smoking something themselves.

Why is this place so popular? I don't know.
Cupcakes are one note (sweet, and I loooove sweets) and humongous. That's it. Filled with frosting and topped with it, I'd rather go to two little red hens on the UES any day of the year. Also, and I know you don't got a cupcake place and get the raspberry bar, but I wanted to try it, and it was stale and sooo small. Hot cocoa was good though.
I don't get the popularity of this place. I used to work right near Sprinkles in Los Angeles - the best cupcake shop in town. Crumbs is more about looks than flavor or substance. Perhaps it's because they look so good that I expected more than just sweet - some extra twist or layer or depth of flavor.
The cupcakes are big and prettily decorated - the kind that makes kids eyes go wide and glaze over with fantasies of what sugar waits inside. I don't like the cake/frosting ratio - but I tend to like more frosting than most. Here, however, the frosting is so-so and teeth-achingly sweet. The cake is dry and bland, no better than you would get from a box.
Take your $3.75 and go over to Magnolia's. The cupcakes are smaller (and lower priced), with tender, moist cake and a scrumptious whipped cream cheese frosting that's light as air.
The basic vanilla mini with strawberry frosting is my favorite. It doesnt get enough cred.
What is this hidden place in a financial looking building? I mean if you are like me during morning rush, I do the New Yorker walk, which is like a game of dodge the people and parking meters and fire hydrants and of course step over the dogs not on them. At that rate you'll barely even notice this Crumbs location. And that was true for me for a long time, until my co-workers told me there's a Crumbs right on this block that I pass by every single morning. So during my lunch hour, I came here to take a look and behold Crumbs do exist on this very block.
The staff is really nice. One of them cracks corny, yet very funny jokes. And when he tells me those jokes it makes me laugh. Very funny dude. The cupcakes are really really good! It's like you buy it and you sit at the park and finish it before you head back to the office because everyone will want a piece and all you're gonna have left are crumbs, literally. Oh yea, they sell birthday candles =)
The only cupcake that can beat up the Red Velvet cupcake at Sibby's (San Mateo, CA) has got to be The Artie Lange at Crumb's bakery. I've been meaning to hit this bakery up for awhile now, and as soon as my band hit up NYC as a tour stop, I had it on the top of my To-Do list. Yeah, I'm in a band, no big deal. Anyway, this cupcake is made of vanilla cake with chocolate cream cheese frosting filling, topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting, dipped in chocolate fondant and edged with chocolate and vanilla sprinkles. Shh, if you're really quiet you can actually hear me getting fatter as I eat this. Only a genius, with a bodybuilder physique, such as Artie Lange could have come up with such an amazing creation.
In other words, this cupcake tastes just like its creator, sweet and dangerous. Two Megan Fox toe thumbs up for Crumb's bakery.
This Crumbs is located in the building that I work in and when I started here three years ago, I thought uh oh I guess I'm about to balloon by 10 pounds because let's face it, I've never turned down dessert. I marched in that first day of work and got a Cappuccino cupcake and made myself nearly sick trying to finish it. The cupcakes are soo huge and soo sweet, it's just too much even for my sweet tooth.
At least, I thought, I don't have to worry about that ten pounds since I'm never coming back for more. Unfortunately I found out that every occasion, from birthdays, to engagements to promotions is celebrated with Crumbs cupcakes in my office. And even though it's not my favorite dessert, am I really going to turn it down at 4PM?
In the intervening three years, I think I've had every cupcake they have to offer. The trick is to buy a bunch of different cupcakes and cut them into halves or quarters and then you can at least enjoy different flavors while ingesting dangerous amounts of sugar.
Cupcake I hate: Red Velvet. For the life of me I don't understand why people enjoy a cupcake just because it has red food coloring.
Cupcake I kinda like: Oreo.
I know everyone is a self-proclaimed foodie here, but let me tell you....I don't understand the hype. Aside from the fact my cupcakes were from the night before (not fresh), it lacked serious flavor. (Being fresh wouldn't have made much of a difference). We got the Red Velvet and Blackout. There wasn't nearly enough icing on the Red Velvet as there should have been for the size, but more importantly, the cake and icing had very little flavor. Same for the Blackout. (Blackout had some sort of mousse inside which made up for it a LITTLE, but not for the lack of flavor. People who actually like these cupcakes must like anything that is sweet, but true foodies know that all things with butter and sugar are NOT always good. These cupcakes were NOT made with love as proclaimed on the website. it's mass produced and flavor proves it.
I didn't even try the cupcakes because I was too full for lunch.
I know, what's wrong with me?!?!?!?!?!? Who doesn't find a way to fit Crumbs cupcakes inside their already over-stuffed like a bursting sausage casing on a hot grill stomach?
Me.
This review is for their lattes. That's right. Their lattes.
Do you know how hard it is to get a good, non-Starbucks latte in NYC?!?!??!?!?!? This is a city that thinks that the weak and watery swill from Dunkin' Donuts is a perfectly acceptable way to start its morning. A city that moves as quickly as New York needs strong coffee to keep up with it. Decent coffee is more difficult than you would think to find. And, at that, it'll be more expensive than any overpriced latte that you've ever had. But this one, though expensive, was good.
And once you've stood in the way-too-small and way-too-cramped store in a long line of people throwing elbows for their cupcakes, be sure to somehow weasel you way through the line to walk across the street and snag a table (with free WiFi) under one of the trees in Bryant Park. Enjoy your latte (every over-priced penny of it) as you look up at the impossibly tall Midtown skyscrapers.
Crumbs really needs to be renamed to "No Crumb Left Behind". Heh. I'm so clever I kill me. Really.
We were across the street at Bryant Park and one of my friends decided that it was worth forcing me to get on my feet - which had been walking around all of NYC in 3" heels for the past 2 hours - to come to Crumbs to get a cupcake. I told him that I don't like cupcakes, but he didn't believe me. No one believes me when I tell them this. I think it's one of those things - people never believe a chubby Asian girl when she declares that she doesn't like sweets. I think it's because, well, how could I be so fat, if I didn't eat sweets. One word for you confused doubters: BACON.
Anyways.
We come to Crumbs and there is a line out the door. Which sounds more impressive then it really is, because this store is the size of my hall-closet. No, maybe smaller. However, while glancing at the cases through the window, I must say - the cupcakes definitely looked yummy.
Knowing that I couldn't and wouldn't eat an entire cupcake by myself (again, just not a fan), I asked my other friend who was with us, if she would like to share one. She pointed towards the "Squiggly" which looked like a Hostess cupcake on steriods. I'm game, and order one. The lady that helped me was fast, and when I asked for forks, she even asked how many did I need. Love her!
The cupcake surprised me. The frosting still bothered me - I think it's just too creamy and sugary and...uhhh...frosting-y for me. Yes, "Frosting-y" is a real word. I got my BA in English, so I should know. Trust. But the cupcake itself was moist, fluffy, and although still a tad too sweet for my tongue, I would still recommend it...to anyone who enjoys sweets.
Oh, and it tasted nothing like a Hostess cupcake. There wasn't that creamy white filling in the center, nor the weird, yet fascinating plastic texture to the frosting. Which I guess is a good thing, because now that I think about it - I don't think I really enjoy Hostess cupcakes.
These cupcakes are amazing - it's true. 1,000+ calories of cream filled goodness. Incredible.
Tourists and locals alike stand in line 10+ minutes to select from the 20+ daily cupcake flavors. I stand in line for the coffee. Yes, I stand in line for the coffee. It's underrated and yet, the best java you will find in Bryant Park!
***** 5 stars
Frosting thank you! But o fudge - the calorie count matches or exceeds that of a Chipotle burrito bowl!! (cupcake is gigantic)
I have a massive sweet tooth and this place was a bit overwhelming for me. My friend and I had the red velvet cupcakes and they were huge.
Good parts: Its a big cupcake so if you are bothered by paying 3-4 dollars per cupcake and want sorta your money's worth its worth going to. There are flavors that are worth trying..but I had heared so much about the red velvet I had to try that.
Location wise we were able to just grab our cupcakes without a huge line and go to Bryant park find outselves a table and enjoy the cupcake slowly.
Downside: It was too sweet and just too much. I would have liked the cupcake to be half the size, more moist, and dense. The frosting needs some work to it and is too surgery. I'm not a big fan of the stain the red velvet causes.
Eh, I think Crumbs makes up for their high prices and mediocre cupcakes by providing behemoth cupcakes. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not one to complain about large portion sizes or too much food (is there such a thing?), but with Crumbs, bigger is definitely not better.
I tried the cookie dough and the Artie Lange and was disappointed by both. The vanilla cake was dry, there wasn't much frosting, and the "chocolate filling" that was supposed to be in both was minimal. Therefore, I was stuck sadly eating two cupcakes that were the size of muffins.
I wasn't able to try my cupcake measuring stick, the vanilla on vanilla, but given that I found the vanilla cake dry and the frosting-to-cake ratio too low, I doubt that Crumbs will be able to make my favorite flavor well.
Crumbs is a wonderful bakery, in principle - if you just try their cupcaes you'll know they're dangerously sugary, delicious, filling, and will probably make you feel sick. Even though that all sounds rather bad, the taste explosion is worth the risk of hypertension, heart palpitations or fatness.
The reason that I've docked them a star is because their location is awful. Placed awkwardly near Bryant Park, it's buried in the horrible overhangs of the buildings - it's virtually impossible to spot if you're not right next to it.
Furthermore, the location itself is cramped and uninviting, and the staff look and sound more like the place should be called 'The Fifth Circle.'
Oh well. Delicious nonetheless.
Their cupcakes (especially the frosting) are awesome. I love the mini ones. There's a chocolate chip cookie flavored one with chocolate cream inside!
If they had vegan options, I'd give them 4 stars.
Passed by and decided to see what all the fuss was about....
Ordered a classic strawberry cupcake. It was awful
They're weren't a lot of options for normal sized cupcakes: lemon, vanilla, chocolate and strawberry.
I figured the lemon might be weird, not a huge fan of chocolate cupcakes, the vanilla might be too sweet, so I ordered strawberry. I didn't realize you could mess up strawberry icing but Crumbs has managed to make that shit taste like pink bubblegum. I took a bite, scraped the frosting off, took another bite and threw the rest away... I was kinda mad I wasted my money on something so synthetic tasting and disgustingly sweet.
A few days before I'd had a strawberry cupcake at Cake Ambiance in Brooklyn and it was like eating fresh strawberries. Go there instead.
The nirvana of all cupcakes, period.
After attending a Meetup for a disappointedly minute Japan Fair I unexpectedly passed by this location. I ordered two large cupcakes on the go as a "pat on my own back" for an great performance at an open-mic as a feature performer. Their cupcakes rage from $2.95; $3.50 to $3.75.
This location along with University Place's location do not have seating. Take-out only.
Hugeeeee cupcakes, delicious and original flavors. We waited on a line to buy half a dozen cupcakes for like 25min but it was totally worth it. Coconut was hands down the best one. Butterfingers was a little bit too sweet but good nonetheless.

Be still my heart. You move me without feeling like my arteries are clogged. The cake alone is super fluff and moist (as a cupcake SHOULD be! none of this dry, substantive cake) ... while the frosting is buttery and NOT too sweet. I Love it!
There are a ton of varieties to choose from, red velvet, peanut butter, brownie, apple, caramel.. whatever you are in the mood for, pray that there are still some batches left.. cuz' once it's sold out... it's out for the day.
It's a great BIG cupcake. No wonder they can charge an arm and a leg. There are 3 sizes, taste which is bite size, classic which is regular size and signature which is a whopping 6 oz. And not that it matters, but you can order them online and have it shipped, but you know, chains flutter all over Manhattan .. i'm pacing myself for the next flavor. I can finish one by myself, I don't like sharing, but I will only if I have to.
I really don't understand the Crumbs appeal. They are HUGE. They are messy. They are dry. They are too sweet. They are nothing I want a cupcake to be.
If you're looking for a small sugar fix, try another cupcake place for sure. Crumbs is too much for me. If I wanted a whole cake, I would buy just that.
Insanity in my mouth! Huge variety of innovative cupcake flavors at a reasonable price considering the craftsmanship that goes into each one and the prime location of this place. We had the gingerbread cupcake topped with maple frosting, crumble, and a little gingerbread man. The whole thing was amazing and I don't normally like icing rich confections. If you are hankering for something sweet, this is the place to stop at.
It was late in the afternoon. And they were out of red velvet cupcakes. EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! So we settled for the apple something or other cupcake. That's how memorable it was. It was $3.75 and too dry for me. I didn't finish it; I just gave my half to my brother and pouted.
If anyone knows a cupcake worthwhile, (in the San Francisco Bay Area since I'm back home now) I'd like suggestions.
Best. Cupcakes. On. The. East. Coast. Period.
I stopped in planning on grabbing only 2 cupcakes but then a glaze came over my eyes as I looked at the wide selection and I lost all common sense! Needless to say I walked out with 4 - devils food, red velvet, vanilla and 1 other random one with sprinkles whose flavor I can't remember!
The cake itself is so moist and the frosting is decadent.
They're extra large size makes them great to split (if you so choose to part with half of your dessert!) My only warning is you'll want to grab some milk before diving in!
the cupcakes are huge and inviting. as you step toward the counter your mind boggles as it tries to decide how in the world you are going to sift through what kind of cupcake you want. you decide that three is the minimum amount you could possibly get. who can choose just one? or just two? nobody. you decide on the red velvet (of course!), the grasshopper, and the samoa. you try one and save the rest for later. you take a bite and realize that it is TOO FRIGGIN SWEET!! what a tease. it looked so devour-licious and all you could do was have two bites. boo.
I was honestly a bit disappointed by the cupcake I had. The Chocolate Cupcake I had was alright, but not too spectacular...at least not as good as some others I've tried in San Francisco and San Diego. The frosting was the most disappointing part...the flavor wasn't "deep" enough...it honestly tasted like sugar and shortening, which I really don't care for.
I'd definitely give it another chance - I didn't get to pick the cupcake I got, but I'd definitely love to try the Oreo Cooke Cupcake...next time I guess.
Are BIG guys suppose to go into a bakery and ask for a small cupcake to go? Ha!
Well, that's what took me this long to find out. I tried Crumbs and I must say that these little gooey chocolate creamy cupcakes are a little bit of heaven.
Crumbs, I will be back for more...
Their cupcakes are good, but definitely overpriced. This location is take-out only (no seats) so I usually end up eating in Bryant Park (across the street) afterwards. Some flavors are great, but others aren't. I've never liked their red velvet. As someone else mentioned, it's made with vanilla frosting or cream cheese frosting. It's also very, very dry. For red velvet, Make My Cake or Sugar Sweet Sunshine definitely makes a better cupcake. The more creative flavors (oreo, m&m, mint chocolate chip, etc...) are all delicious though.
I think the cupcakes are kind of big so I usually get a variety pack of 12 mini cupcakes.
I want to give this place a 3.5.
This location does not have seating room. Half of their cupcake selections were missing. There is barely enough room to wait for a certain cupcake. The person who helped me with my order didn't even look in my eye. The other people in the back were joking around, making it seemingly slower to get my two cupcakes. Nonetheless, these cupcakes are tasty - though not really as moist as I would have expected - and SOOO large. Good monetary value, I guess, but I didn't enjoy my purchasing experience so much; it was basically so-so.
All of the cupcakes were so big and no one would split one with me so I had to settle for a small/regular sized chocolate with vanilla frosting. It was very good and I loved both the moist cake and deliciously textured frosting. I'm holding out for the smores cupcake someday because it looked fabulous.
This location is absolutely tiny!
I think this is my first gourmet cupcake experience. It was quite excellent. One of my friends recommended this place to me, so I managed to pick up a carrot cake and red velvet cupcake on my way out before heading home. I ate the cupcakes at the airport and during the plane ride, and enjoyed both of them (I shared with some friends). They're rich, moist, delicious cupcakes. Don't know what more to say about them.
I'm kind of surprised that people managed to take pictures of these cupcakes before eating them, because they look so delicious!
Not going to say that these are the "best" cupcakes in NYC because I haven't tried them all. Crumbs' cupcakes are , without a doubt, in the top three. WAY better than Magnolia. They beat the hell out of normal birthday cake. Take a few to your office on a rough day and you'll be everyone's BFF.
Pricey - but worth it.
best cupakes in the area.
con: i dont think they give you a bag/case if you buy one cupcake
i remember at my old work function the girls went wild about this place.
no complaints ever =)
I had a yellow cupcake with choclate frosting and sprinkles. DELICIOUS
It did totally remind me of being a kid and my mom making those from box mix and canned frosting. But bigger!
Exactly what I had been craving.
Had seen Crumbs featured on the premiere episode of this season's Celebrity Apprentice, and was intrigued. Of course they would have a web site and of course they would offer priority overnight shipping! Perfect for those who go weak in the knees for a good cupcake.
Tried the Hostess, Blackout, Red Velvet, Vanilla Coconut, Grasshopper and Artie Lange cupcakes. I must say I hope New Yorkers and Angelenos appreciate that Crumbs is so close to them. Crumbs serves up some mighty fine cupcakes! My favorite was the Artie Lange and Grasshopper.
In comparison to Sprinkles cupcakes, which I see is opening in New York soon, I think Sprinkles is the better of the two.
I'm a sucker for desserts. So I have a feeling I'll be visiting Crumbs quite a bit. I tried it for the first time today. I had the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup cupcake. Admittedly, I only ordered this because I was in a rush, and understandably overwhelmed by all of the great options. What I really wanted was a Heath Bar cupcake. It turns out that they do have one on the menu. I just didn't see it.
Either way, the cupcake that I had was great, and they've got tons of cool options based on popular candy bars and other snacks like Devil Dogs, etc.
