I'm sitting here at my desk, pulling out receipts for an expense report, and I have unhappy flashbacks to the 5 minute elevator wait, dingy lobby, smoke smelling elevator. All this takes away from the bright spot - Hills Brothers waiting to gag me first thing in the am.

There were some positives - no cockroaches, no leaking plumbing and the TV worked.

The last time I stayed at a Crowne Plaza I swore I wouldn't again. And now, here I am, reliving another Crowne Plaza experience.

Not horrible.

The Amazing:  The gentleman at the front desk was incredibly helpful and had a great sense of humor.  This guy deserves a raise.  I was also a moron and left some clothes behind in the room.  Their friendly staff is mailing the items to me.  Awesome.

The Average:  Average sized room, average room service.  I had breakfast one morning, and it was, well, meh...  The beds were comfortable, and everything was clean and neat.  They had an internet connection in the room, but not ethernet cable to plug into it.  Good thing I brought one with me, oh wait, I didn't.  Boo.

The Horrid:  The funky sulphur smell emanating from the toilet.  WTF.  Are they using lake water?  Also, the parking garage is a bit of a nightmare.  Small awkward parking spots made me feel like I was in an M.C. Escher painting.

not a fan.

there were three people behind the counter when i arrived to check in, but only one was there to work, as the other two were just looking at each other. in uniform no less...

upon my arrival to the hotel, i was greeted by a non-functioning garage elevator. after the elevator that didn't work, a desk where only 33% of the staff was willing to work, i finally made my way to the elevator to get to my room on the 14th floor. hold on.. what's this to the left of the button that says 14... a number THIRTEEN?? come on people, you don't call the 13th floor the 13th floor. not that it's really a big deal, but man this hotel is just not all that. free wifi, though, which is the only thing they really got right.

iron was shit, no microwave in the room, and it looked old and tired. this room was 68 dollars on expedia (four stars in downtown, if you must know). it's all right for that money, but this was just not a good experience at all.

if you're reading, drew carey, this hotel does not rock.

In my business, I tend to spend extended periods of time living in hotels. This is fine, because I really dislike cleaning up after myself, but it does have some issues.

When you live in a hotel for weeks on end, little things that are minor problems become huge nagging issues that can lead you to wonder if it is all really worth it anymore.

The crowne is a nice place. The rooms are clean, fairly modern, and well done. But, the places has some big annoyances.

1. During my stay, one of the elevators was out (1 of 4) despite still having three elevators, waiting took foooorrrr evveerrrrrrrrr (said in in Sandlot voice). Once it did get there, you got to get very personal with Midwestern tourists that are clearly not savvy of the glycemic effect of simple carbohydrates.

2. Apparently there was a youth conference of some sort and hooligans were running rampant all over the hotel, playing the elevators and throwing ice at each other. Usually I would of joined in with them, but in this case I would of gladly paid a premium to not deal with them.

3. The rooms do not have a couch. A premium suite should have a couch. One my my college buddies/ co- worker/ enablers came down to see me. After a night of binging on West 9th he was in no shape to drive and requested stay at my room. In my head, the room had a couch for Jeffy. In reality, it did not. So, I shared my king size bead with a wasted rugby player. This situation did not please me, but friends take care of each other. Instead of taking the excess pillows off the bed, I stacked them between Jeffy and myself in attempt to prevent him rolling my way.

When a wasted Jeffy noticed the pillows he let out a chuckle and said "You think that is going to stop me ? Fool!"
I responded.
"No, but I think it will slow you down enough for me to escape"
Drunken Jeffy ponder this and replies,
"One step ahead Keith, one step ahead"

I've stayed at this hotel a total of three times.  The first time was when it was still the Sheraton, and these last two times have been under the ownership of Crowne Plaza.  I have to say that it was a much better stay when it was still the Sheraton.

My experience on this last trip began at the Cleveland Airport, where the hotel's shuttle service never showed up.  The first time I called the hotel's front desk to call the shuttle, a woman hung up on me.  The second time, she cut me off from speaking and transferred me, hanging up on me.  The third time, she transferred me to a gentleman that told me the shuttle would arrive in 10 minutes.  I waited 30 minutes and eventually just took a cab.

The rest of my stay was ok, until it was time to check out.  Since I was on a business trip, all room charges were to be put on my company's account.  When I checked out of my room on the last day, the front desk said that I had zero charges and that I was good to go.  Three days later, I checked my credit card transactions and noticed that the Crowne Plaza had charged almost $300 to my credit card, which was only to be used for incidentals!  They charged me for the whole stay, even though I checked out with a balance of zero.  Also, they never charged my company for the room, just me.

Upon calling the hotel to tell them about their mistake, I was told to call back the next day and talk to the accountant.  I did, and she said she would credit my card for the amount.  Two weeks went by, and I was still not credited the money they took out of my credit card.  This time, I asked for the manager, and was given his voicemail.  Great.  I called back again, and was given the accountant's voicemail by a surly front desk employee.

Only after getting my company to call the banquet manager at the hotel (who deals with large events and big clients), did the money finally show up on my statement.  I never once heard from a manager, or even received as much as an apology from anyone at the Crowne Plaza in Cleveland.

Never stay here!

I stayed at this hotel last summer. I was in a room with a view of the Lake Erie on the 15th floor. It was very beautiful and was enough for me to want to stay there again. Everything else was satisfactory as I recall, but the view still lingers in my mind when I think of this trip. If you stay there, insist on a lake view high enough to see over the building to the north.
