4 reviews for Crown City Inn
Ok people, this little Hotel/Motel is absolutely NOT a Hilton, or the Del, but it is perfect for the price and the fact that is very well kept up and quaint.
After reading all of these not so positive reviews, i was a little nervous upon arriving to the hotel, but was pleasantly surprised. I will say that i think the clientele that this hotel aims for is slightly older, but the rooms were not dingy, did not smell, and were not out dated. I booked the cheapest and smallest room, which cost me about $107.00 after taxes. For what i paid, and for what i needed the room for, it was perfect. I had a friend getting married on the island, so i really just needed a room to change in and a place to shower and sleep. The room, yes was really tiny, but umm... it was built in like the 60's when people's needs were a bit more realistic.
The room had a nice mini fridge... Free and empty, a microwave and a Coffey maker. The bathroom was very nice! Looks like they recently updated it, and i have to say that they did a fantastic job.
The only flaw about this place was the horrible plastic mattress cover. It was so loud and it just made the nights sleep not as good as I would have liked. Though looking at the glass half full...knowing that there was plastic on the mattress it did ease my mind about all the nastiness that gets absorbed into an uncovered hotel mattress.
Ok, enough about that. Overall, it was a quaint cute little hotel with a friendly staff, a tiny pool, free beachcruisers, a guest laundry room, complimentary morning coffee, well kept grounds, and well within my budget.
Parking can be tricky, but it was much easier finding parking for the hotel then at the Vons down the street.

If you're cheap and in Coronado, this is the place to be. Assuming you also don't need quiet to sleep, and are the kind of voyeur who likes to hear other rooms' conversations.
Perhaps the renovations will improve things. However, we were woken up each morning at 5am to the pitter patter of 750lbs children playing basketball. At around 8:00am the sound was unbearable, as it was joined by the sweet siren song of a tile saw (in case you're unaware as to the sound that makes, it's something like "bzzzzzzRRRRRzzzzzz", only ten thousand times louder than that voice in your head).
Add to that the carpet which still contained a prior guest's M&M, and the dirty shoe prints in the bathroom upon arrival, and suffice it to say, this was not my favorite hotel of all time.

Well, I feel bad giving this place just three stars. If you think of all lodging establishments on a scale one to five stars, this is about a three, whereas a Westin might be a four and a Ritz a five, in general. But rated against motels, this is absolutely a five star.
For us, we were looking for lodging near my family for the holidays that was reasonable, but comfortable, and absolutely dog friendly. Our options were rather limited, and the Crown City seemed to be the only fit. Dog friendly typically brings two options: remarkably high end places, and total dumps. We were nervous that this place seemed to fall in the middle, a previously unknown category for dog friendly. Another issue for me is my aversion to motels, and I readily admit I am extremely picky about lodging in general, concerned about safety, comfort, cleanliness, convenience to a fault :-)
Crown City far exceeded little miss picky's expectations on all fronts. The property, a totally remodeled motor inn from the 1940s, is almost a boutique hotel. The room was insanely clean, one of the cleanest rooms I have ever been in. The linens and mattress, while not the fancy "heavenly bed" that is so in now, were exceptionally comfortable and the linens of great quality, with no funky bleach smells I often find at hotels. The pillows were lovely. The bathroom was a bit sparten and small, but had a modern, high pressure shower head and top notch spa products, including makeup remover wipes, something I've never seen in any hotel. Towels were comfortable and numerous. Furniture was fine, not offensive, certainly not trashy, and there were some cute lamps dressing up the place. We also had a nice coffee maker, microwave and fridge. The onsite restaurant does room service, another first for a motel (we did not partake of the food). The grounds are cute, nicely landscaped and the buildings charmingly painted. The staff was OUTSTANDING, friendly, fast, welcoming. Location is great--it's about 2-3 blocks from the heart of Coronado (easy walk) and about 20 mins to the dog beach, which by all accounts, is nirvana, plain and simple.
Pet fee is just $8 a night. They also provide a pet welcome bag with a huge pile of treats and toys, more than I have seen even in the highest end places, plus dog bowls in the room. They truly love and welcome dogs.
Prices were great for the location and seemed fair in general for San Diego.
I'll certainly be back for family visits. To be honest, if I was looking for a hotel in which I would spend hours and hours of waking time in, I'd probably look for a more luxurious room or resort, just to have a little more luxury (giant tub, etc) and space, but this place is perfect for an active vacation. A great place to return to in the evening. There are, btw, a couple deluxe rooms with big tubs and more space, but no doggies allowed.

we booked a room here during memorial weekend, and it was okay. the rooms where tiny, considering there were 2 double beds. terrible lighting in the rooms. the internet service (only in the lobby) were very slow, and there was no continental breakfast of any sort. But in the afternoon, cookies and iced tea can be found in the lobby.
Nothing exceptional about the service. Because the facility was generally a smaller one, I felt the need for more privacy. Everything was so close together, I'm sure people would notice you. Tiny pools, tiny driveway, and about 8 parking spaces. talk about claustrophobia.
perks: sweet landscaping, reminiscent of a bed/breakfast. and this is a dog friendly place. my pooch came along for the vacay, and they welcomed her w/ a squeeky toy and treats.
not exactly a five star, but made do, especially b/c all the other hotels/motels in the vacinity were overcharging due to the holiday.
