One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
I've had tea at many places around the city, and our experience here was one of the best. While Crown & Crumpet is in a tea service category all its own--its not the Ritz-Carlton nor Neiman-Marcus-- the whimsical, sweet, girly environment they've created really delights people. We sat near the front door and watched a never-ending stream of people walk in just to check out the place--all of them smiling at the cuteness of it all!
The selection of teas was very impressive (45 different varieties) and each person in our party loved their individual choice, plus the tea cozies with funny little embroidered sayings were a big hit. We had the full afternoon tea service and had plenty to eat; the crumpets soaked with melted butter were amazing (omg!!!) and the scones were a bit crumbly but absolutely melted in your mouth. I thought the teeny mini cupcakes with sprinkles were the cutest thing ever! We had a nice selection of tea sandwiches (7 or 8 different kinds?) though some were more tasty than others. Our server, a lovely lady named Paula, was charming and attentive without being intrusive. The thing that our group was most impressed with was the attention to detail everywhere...when you lift your tea cup there is a cute message on the saucer underneath...there were adorable sugar "charms" inside the sugar bowl...original antique London stationery under the glass tabletop...and souvenir tea bags in cute envelopes delivered with the bill. The adjacent gift shop had even more cutesy, adorable, unusual trinkets...enough to make any girl feel like a 9 year old again, and too much for any straight guy to handle :-)
The entire staff we encountered, including the couple that owns Crown & Crumpet, were sweet and welcoming as can be. It's worth swallowing your local pride and venturing into tourist-ville to check out this charming little spot at Ghiradelli Square.
After meeting one of the owners, Amy Dean, and hearing about this place, I immediately knew that I NEEDED to visit. I was already conveniently trying to plan a birthday outing for one of my girlfriends, so the 3 of us made a Sunday reservation and headed out in our best afternoon tea attire.
Beth, our server, was not only professional and knowledgeable, but extremely friendly and attentive. The tea selection was AMAZING... I was glad we ordered the Afternoon Tea for 3 b/c it gave us all a chance to try different teas (we got the Chai black tea, Grapefruit Green tea, and Peach Crumpet white tea). The tea sandwich assortment was delicious, as well as the scones&crumpets - complete with the jam, cream, butter, and lemon curd, AND the little bite-sized desserts. Everything looked so good that it too everything in us to be ladylike and not chomp into it all at once!
We had a great experience here; the decor, service, tableware, and food/teas all come together to create the perfect location for a girls' day out.
Thank you, Amy and Christopher!
I would give this place five stars but I have only been there once. I normally avoid ghiradelli square because it is so crowded but it was downright pleasant the other day when we went there.
The place is adorable- all decked out in pink and white- perfect for a girly outing. The people that work there are so warm, friendly and accommodating.
Our waiter was knowledgeable about the teas there. We had the strawberry vanilla green tea which was so delicious that I had to buy some to take home. The tea for 2 was delicious- sandwiches were great and they were kind enough to make them vegetarian for us, scones were delicious, crumpets (eaten first while still warm) were great, assorted pastries were also amazing. I loved the tea charms- colored sugar cube-like (in the shape of stars, hearts, etc) in the sugar bowl that you could put in your tea.
I really like the stuff for sale in the shop- very funky, cute jewelery. They also have nice tea items such as teapots, crown & crumpetware.
It was a great experience and I will certainly be back again.
If you plan on going to enjoy tea at Crown and Crumpet, be prepared. It IS supposed to look like Rainbow Brite threw-up all over Barbie's playhouse and then decorated it with, you guessed it, more pink crap.
Once you get over the initial shock of being sucker-punched by all the colors in the spectrum, it's a great load of fun. Go for the "Tea for Two" (a good deal for what you get, $21 each) because then you each get a huge pot of any tea you want and a bunch of foodstuffs. They have anything from trusty English Breakfast to some frou-frou crap called Strawberry Fields, with all the Greens and Chamomiles you could want in between. The servers are sweet and peppy with very helpful tips on what to eat first, how long to steep your tea, etc. You can sit inside next to the handy fake fire or out on the porch where there is a lovely view of the Bay. It is very easy to spend a couple of hours just sitting and noshing on your tower of little num-nums while the servers refill your tea pot.
Reservations are a good idea unless you're going in the middle of the week, there is street parking (2 hours) and a couple of garages since it is in the middle of Ghiradelli Square. They also sell all sorts of candies and tea pots with matching cups.
Came here on a Sunday afternoon to surprise my girlfriend since she always wanted to have afternoon English tea. Crown & Crumpet is located on the western most side of Ghirardelli Square across from Cellar360.
I would HIGHLY recommend reservations because the group of 4 walk-ins before us were turned away since they were all booked - I got brownie points for making reservations with the girlfriend for that! lol.
We ordered the Tea for Two which was $42 and according to the menu: "$21 per person if you can't do the math." The Tea for Two includes two LARGE pots of tea (your choice) and a myriad of small snacks. It comes out in three separate plates on a rack that has 8 different types of small sandwiches (2 roast beef, 1 egg salad, 1 curry flavored salad, 1 smoked salmon, 1 cucumber salad, 2 mango chutneys); 2 biscuits; 2 crumpets; 2 cranberry scones; 2 chocolate chip cookies; 2 VERY sweet pink marshmallows, 2 candy cupcakes; 2 mini-tart snacks and a bowl of fruit. In addition to all that, you get 4 types of spreads (strawberry jam, lemon curd, clotted cream and butter).
Wow...that was a mouthful. See what I did there? lol. Anyways, the decor is an explosion of color. And by color I mean PINK PINK PINK everywhere and I couldn't stop the feeling that this place was probably owned by Juicy Couture. The place is nice, small and they are always busy that's why reservations are a MUST!
Will I come again? Of course! Tip Top Cheerio Crumpets and Tea!

*5 Stars out of 5*
How small, How cute, how beautiful!! My friend had been looking for a teapot and here I spy one in the window so i had to take a look!
I was sad that there was a reception desk and yet I received not even a hello when I walked in. I understand people might be helping others but the first impression is pretty important to me. Oh but it's so pretty here. I saw a teapot but it was $40 and I don't have that so I left with their 'brochure' and I'm glad to see they have a website..
How cool was it to see two women enjoying tea and treats at a table.. SOO cute!! I'll have to return for my crumpets!
This place is ridiculous. I'm pretty sure my head cracked open and little hearts flew out.
They like you to start your tea on the hour, but we were late for our reservation and they were quite gracious about it. Every surface is covered with flowers or pink checkers. Scattered around the main tea room are signs with Britishisms written on them and little displays selling adorable little packages of candy.
The tea selection is extensive; I particularly liked that there was a good selection of floral and citrusy black tea blends (think Earl Grey + his friends).
The sugar bowl contained, in addition to regular sugar, little pastel sugar candies molded into the shapes of teacups and teapots. Our food came on a three-tiered service: on the top, there were finger sandwiches with crusts cut off (chicken pesto, egg salad, crab salad, cucumber/cream cheese, smoked salmon, and chevre/roasted bell peppers); in the middle, buttered toasted crumpets and scones (with and without raisins); and on the bottom, an assortment of tiny tarts and cakes. There was lemon curd, clotted cream, and strawberry jam, as well as a small dish of berries.
I'm sure that my coworkers' experiences of Crown & Crumpet weren't enhanced by the continuous "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE" issuing from my mouth, but hey. I think I'm falling back into happy food catatonia as I write this.
Any minuses? I suppose most people think that straight males wouldn't enjoy this place, but my world view does not allow for the existence of people for whom tiers and tiers of small food is not extremely exciting. Other tiny minus: it really is in an embarrassingly touristy area (Ghirardelli Square) but who am I kidding? I don't live in SF, and therefore am also a lame tourist.
I really really really enjoyed my afternoon tea today! This place is the perfect place to take the gals, your mom, mother-in-law, sister...etc. It is VERY girly, but then again-it's afternoon tea so what do you expect?
One suggestion: When you order tea for two you get a selection of different sandwiches...which makes it difficult/ awkward when eating because there is not an equal amount of variety for each person. What if both people want egg salad? So offer 4 types of sandwiches, 1 piece for each person to solve this table manner issue.
They book up on the weekends-but weekday there is hardly anyone there. Parking is easy too-right under the square is a parking garage.
We had the tea for two: Daisy Tea and the Peach White Tea. I liked both of them but preferred the Daisy Tea. No one came to ask us if we liked our food or tea selection-but we didnt really complain either.
the crumpets were okay-not as warm as I would like but still good. The lemon curd was very fresh, as it was very tart and full of flavor.
Overall, out of the selection in the SF area, this is my favorite afternoon tea place. Lovejoys is so old, and you think the chairs may break under you-this place everything is new, clean, crisp! It feels like you are princess in a modern age place, rather then being taken back to the 1900's era with all the old mismatched clutter. And service is sweeter too ;-)
Come here, as it has a better vibe. However, my favorite place is still in pleasanton...this is a good place to come in the city.
If only I were 10 again.
Oh I'm going to admit it, even at my age, I was mesmerized by this place.
The pink, the tea sets, the table clothes, the crumpets, the beautiful displays of candies and cookies. The tablecloths all of it could make any girly little girl or adult woman very happy.
I didn't get a chance to eat here or have the tea, but I did browse the gift shop for quite a bit and was so close to planning a tea party right then and there on my Blackberry so that I could buy some stuff!
It's official, I love this place! This tea room epitomizes all things girly, feminine, and everything cute and charming you would want from afternoon tea, and two men manly enough to have it with us.
Crown & Crumpet puts out all the stops. As a girl, if you ever threw a teddy bear princess tea party, this place is made exactly with that concept in mind. Pink, pastel blue and green is the color scheme of the place. Florals, candies in all sorts of glass jars, floral and striped upholstered furniture, cakes, glitter; stamped tea pots and plates, and even a fake fireplace screen, this place is way cute and way girly.
We came here on a Sunday afternoon and the place was packed with mostly women (except for our party of 4 which was evenly split in gender-yes, our men love us). There was a bridal shower and a baby shower going on simultaneously and for the bridal shower, the tea room set up a cute living room area with a glitter bride and groom cake. For the baby shower, the tea room set up a cute tall stork. I love the details in this place!
We decided to order 2 "Tea for 2" so we had 4 different pots of teas and an assortment of scones and crumpets, tea sandwiches, and desserts for $21 a person. They have an extensive tea selection and allow for a la carte or lunch orders as well.
The sandwiches were all delicious. I personally loved the curried chicken chutney, egg salad, and pear and brie. The scones were just the perfect size accompanied by lemon curd, strawberry jam, and clotted cream. I have actually never had a crumpet before and I loved the chewy texture of it. To end it all are an assortment of bite sized desserts.
I love Crown and Crumpet. I love the decor and ambiance. I love the selection of teas. I love the table settings. I love the food. I love the service. The price is also very fair at $21 a person if you order Tea for 2. (It is $28 if you order one tea). They also validate for one hour in the parking lot which is helpful.
If you are planning a party or a girl's event, I would highly recommend this place!
Ended up here for a baby shower last month. The decor is cute. Much more hip than you'll find at similar tea establishments like Lisa's Tea Treasures (Campbell location).
The amount of food they gave was great. Way more than anyone could eat so we all got doggie bags. The variety of food and tea was good but not the best I've had.
The location is kind of small so it can only fit 1-2 large groups (over 10 people) comfortably.
If I lived in the city I would return but since I don't Lisa's will do just fine.
Totally, utterly, and completely charmed, and really, what's not to love about Crown & Crumpet? The hot pink and white checked floor, the mismatched floral table clothes, the jolly staff, the adorable flatware, the witty menu...I could go on, but I will spare you.
The small tearoom, tucked away in Ghirardelli Square, is a great place to share a small pot of rooibos with a friend. Its worth adding 2 scones to your order as they are only a dollar for the two and come with a sorts of naughtiness like clotted cream, raspberry jam, butter and Crown & Crumpet's very own, exquisite lemon curd.
My only complaint is that they don't package and sell the delectably delicious, house made lemon curd. When I die and go to heaven, I will be swimming in a pool of the stuff while scones float past me on both sides.
In conclusion, Crown & Crumpet is so cute it will make you mad as a hatter.
Roll out the white gloves and fancy hand bags ladies...it's time for High Tea.
What a delightful treat it was to sip and nibble on such a delicious array of teas and snacks! From the moment you step foot in to C&C it feels as though you've stepped in to another world which is both whimsical and charming and you immediately feel like a kid again! I love the attention to detail they've put in to everything from the tea pot cozy's, the star and heart shaped sugar cubes, the wood burning fire on the plasma TV, and the individual tea packet souvenirs they give you on your way out.
Our server went out of her way to make sure we had the most memorable experience possible. There's quite a wide selection of teas to choose from and each one of us ordered our own flavor so we could pass around and share.
There were 4 of us so we ordered two tea's for 2 which was perfect. Their sandwiches were all equally scrumptious along with their scones....OMG (the crumpets.....ehhh, not so much)!! There are 4 different toppings to choose from: freshly made lemon curd, butter, clotted cream from Devonshire and strawberry jam. The deserts were a nice little treat but by no means a show stopper. We also opted to splurge a little and each ordered our own glass of Mumm Cuvee which came in their own little bottles and made for 2 delicious glass fulls (better value play than ordering a full bottle!)
They also have an a la carte lunch menu which looked just as good!
This place is ideal for a Bachelorette party, Birthday Party, or a girls only afternoon. Highly recommend it!
Just like a fairytale out of a storey book. So adorable! I had such a great experience here! I can't wait to come back.
My friend and I stumbled upon Crown & Crumpet after a large breakfast. We looked around the place and just had to sit down and try some tea, scones and cake.
Everything is so detailed and feminine. I loved it!
So detailed:
* The floor is checkered pink and white
* The sugar for our tea had purple heart shaped sugar cubes in it
* The tea cups had pink flowers with different witty sayings on them
* The tea cozies were all decorated so cute like apples or with little embroidered cakes
* The scones, which were out of the world, so rich and buttery, were served with two different flavored delicious jams, butter and sweet cream.
* The pen to sign the check was topped with a huge pink flower wrapped in a black ribbon with polka dots.
* We were given two tea samples instead of candies with our check, which I thought was a nice touch.
* The gift shop had adorable fancy wrapped chocolates.
It felt like a tea party. I felt special here and spoiled! Our server was so pleasant and checked on us just enough times. I could have stayed here all day and socialized over a pot of tea.
I absolutely can't wait to come back and share this gem of a tea shop to other friends!
Note: There were not any men here drinking tea nor would I expect any to be unless they are really in touch with their feminine side. If you want to lose a guy quickly take him here because the girlishness of this place will probably scare him off. However, if he asks you out again after attending Crown & Crumpet with you, he is a true winner!
VERY nice place~~cute decroration...
Service: 5 stars
Food: 4 stars
Tea: 5 Stars
I went here for my best friend's bachelorette party last month and everyone had a great time. We opted to have the "light tea" and it was a perfect amount of tea and small bites. My only complaint is that the tables were set very close together and we felt a little cramped. Besides that I really enjoyed our afternoon tea party and would definitely go again
A Marie Antoinette inspired/whimsical brunch!
I highly suggest going to Crown & Crumpet for a delightful brunch with your best girlfriends! Every single one of you will fall inlove with this darling place. Be sure to wear cute/floral, girly sundresses to match the setting and bring a camera too! You will want to take a million photos.
...and DO NOT LEAVE WITHOUT TRYING THE SCONES! THEY ARE SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOD! They melt in your mouth.
xoxox
Tea was good but crumpet sandwich is bad!
Our waitress tells us AFTER:
That they were ordering "steak knives" for their crumpet sandwiches IE.."rock hard mounds" because of other complaints of being impossible to cut ---haha ....."BLT" crumpet sandwich ---no steak, just bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado. Why does it require a steak knife?
For 3 people our lunch was 108.00 --we did have tea...
This restaurant is exactly why YELP exists in my opinion.
Love Joys wins!
My best girlfriend D & I stood at the entrance & squealed. Her baby boy was sleeping in his stroller, but had he been awake, he would have squealed too. Without even having been seated yet, we catch a glimpse of C&C's whimsy & charm & we know we are in for a delightful afternoon of tea & crumpets.
C&C takes every opportunity to wow you with their attention to detail; even in the unlikeliest places ( i.e. charms in your sugar dish, sayings on your saucer, etc) they find a way to show they aren't forgetting the little things that make you smirk & smile. I especially like their list of rules, including the one about "not using your cell phone there or they we'll turn it into a crumpet!" They certainly are quite cheeky little monkeys (that's my lame attempt at throwing out a British phrase...)
The best way to describe their color palette is white with splashes of pinks & other bright colors. The decor is busy with new, pretty things that only a girl could love. C&C is so modern, casual & fun & not pretentious. The environment just makes you feel like a million bucks, without costing that much.
Tea for two is $21 per person & includes:
- two pots of tea ("Paris" for me & a premium one for my girl which was $2 extra a pot called "Are You Knackered.")
- eight sandwiches: 2 chicken pesto, 2 shrimp, and 1 each of egg salad, smoked salmon & cream cheese, egg salad, cucumber & cream cheese & roasted veggies & goat cheese. You do not get to pick your sandwiches; they bring out what the chef makes.
- two regular scones & two raisin scones accompanied by butter, clotted cream, lemon curd (amazing) & strawberry jam.
- two crumpets (We'd never had crumpets. These were warm & toasty & buttery.)
- assortments of sweets including tiny cupcakes, brownie, shortbread, blueberry tart, gingersnap almond cookie & fruit
C&C is smaller than I thought it would be, so make sure you have a reservation. They validate parking for an hour & a half, which brought our parking total down to $4.50 from $13.50. Parking in the garage is $2.25 every 20 minutes.
If I had to pick, I have to admit that I prefer Lovejoy's food by a small margin & appreciate that they are less expensive but nevertheless, C&C's service & environment is a tea room experience not to be missed.
Holy Moly... if every old-school female stereotype threw up all over a room, it would be Crown and Crumpet. When I was five and giving my Barbies makeovers whist wearing a tutu, I could only have imagined a place like this. But don't get me wrong... it's neither terrible nor degrading. It just takes you back to the days when tea parties included Fisher Price kitchenettes, Easy Bake Ovens, and dressing up in your favorite Disney Princess costume.
Once you move beyond the pink exterior, you'll find that a lot of the teas are suited to an adult palate and the entire process is refined. Almost all the teas and goodies are imported from the UK and the owners seem fanatical about authenticity and fantasy. It's amusing, consuming, and a wonderful adherence to a fun concept.
I've never had their food, but I have had their tea and patronized the shop. Markups are on the hefty side, but a lot of the stuff they sell is cheap to start with. If you need a quick and easy present for a girly tea-drinker, their retail store is perfect. This seems like a great place for a young girl's birthday party.
I am in love with this place! It brings back fond memories of my childhood when I used to have pretend tea parties with my very own mini tea set. Design (clean and simple) and color scheme (pretty in pink and white) really makes this place stand out from other typical tea places. Everything is just so cute, it makes me want to dress up and be a girly girl for the day while sipping tea with my ladies, pinkies up!
Tea for Two: It doesn't look or sound like much, but for a hungry pair, you will be satisfied/full!
- Selection of eight tea sandwiches: They give you what they decide to make that day. I thought the sandwiches were alright, but the small portions made it just right and not too filling. The only one that I didn't like was the one with goat cheese and bell peppers (too rich).
- Four scones with clotted cream, jam and lemon curd: Perfect pairing with tea.
- Two toasted crumpets with butter: I suggest eating this first, it gets a bit hard/chewy when left out for too long.
- Eight sweets and treats: mini cupcakes (sugar high), blueberry tarts (too sweet), tiramisu squares (rich and good), shortbread cookie (not too sweet, good) and a mini square of chocolate layered cake.
- Two large pots of tea: Strawberry fields (strong, but it smells really good like strawberries and cream) and peach crumpet (FAVORITE, perfect with a spoonful of sugar). Not too strong, b/c you can choose how long you seep the tea leaves. With some sugar (love the colorful sugar shapes), the teas are a perfect combo with the treats.
My favorite thing about this place is the attention to detail. Everything is perfectly designed with little thoughtful touches here and there. Teapots have a teapot shaped lock to hold the tea strainer in place and you get pink/white candy bracelets when you are finished with your tea. Service was superb, the waitress checked on us constantly and was very accommodating. I think we encountered the owner when we walked in, she is a lively lady that brightened up my mood with her funny comments/actions.
P.S. They do not have a bathroom for customer use inside the shop, you have to walk outside to the public restroom, so don't wait too long until you really have to go (there may be a long line)!
This place was everything I'd hoped for and more! I was looking for a really special place to go with my toddler and my mom (who's in town visiting). I found this place through recommendation of a friend who had gone with her preschooler. The decor is truly magical, the staff was welcoming and thoroughly accomodating, and the tea and food was delicious! I'll admit that I was a bit worried about the food because I've heard all the stories about bad English food, but my concerns were completely put to rest (at least as far as this pseudo-English place is concerned!) We had the tea for two, plus the kid's tea. Five stars for the tea and food. We sprung for the crown and wand -- a total waste of money even at $5. It was just a foam cutout of a wand and a crown. Not worth it at all! Our total including 20% tip came to $82, which is why I gave the place 4 stars. That said -- I still recommend going once for the experience! It's very expensive, but I didn't feel gipped at all -- the experience along with the food made it worth it! Bring a camera!
One last note: despite being in Fisherman's Wharf, parking was easy and relatively inexpensive because they validate the first hour for you.
Crown & Crumpet I love you! The ambiance is seriously pretty and I love to feel pretty in pink! I'm such a girl, what can I say.
Reminds me of when I was just a young girl playing tea party with my cabbage patch doll Elizabeth, raggedy Anne, puppy, Mr. Snuggie, and my little pony Purple prancer.
Came here to celebrate my BFF's posh birthday with a party of 6 (with human friends) to have the "Grand Tea" experience with some bubbly champagne!!! Nestled in a tourist trap of Ghirardelli Square make sure to make reservations!
We walked on in and the manager was impressed that we were all dressed up for tea and she loved it! Aren't you suppose to dress up for high tea? Duh, right?! But she was adorable and inviting :).
We had an assortment of 6 different teas to try:
Green Teas: "Strawberry fields" and "Jasmine Green"
Black Teas: "C&C Private Blend" and "Paris" (My new favorite)
Oolong Tea: "Strawberry Oolong"
White Tea: "Pai Mu Tan"
In addition to the delightful teas, we had a whole lot of edible delicate yummies! Since there were 6 of us we got three towers of three tiers of goodies. We had a competition to see which pair can finish their tiers first. My partner and I lost badly. For our lost we should have done a dare, since I love to play truth or dare, oh well next time. At the end we got lovely departing gifts as part of the package.
Overall, it was pretty pricey at 67 bucks person, but it was well worth it to relive a favorite childhood pastime of mine AND to celebrate my BFF's 29th Birthday. I would definitely come back!
BTW... Check out their little gift shop! I love their unique jewelry and you know I couldn't leave with out a piece or two ;).
A perfect start to a birthday and after we hit the Nob Hill Spa to continue our Posh Birthday party! :)
I usually don't head towards the tourist traps in town and I have prided myself on steering clear of Fisherman's Wharf whenever possible (except for the occasional Buena Vista Irish Coffee). But with the discovery of Crown and Crumpet in Gharadelli Square, I may have to put up with the tourists for the occasional high tea.
Decidedly pink in its décor, Crown and Crumpet is not your typical frou-frou tea house. There are no Victorian lace doilies or too precious white tablecloths. I will grant an excess of chintz, but the atmosphere is fun and bright and inviting.
Lisa and I were charmed by the fact that along with the classic tea offerings, this establishment boasts an alcohol license, enabling them to serve sparkling wines as well as ports, Madeiras, and sherries. We started with splits of rosé Champagne and there was a definite desire to smuggle the deeply-etched Champagne flutes out in our purses.
Despite the inviting selection of savories on the menu (sausage rolls, welsh rarebit), we opted for the Tea for Two, enabling us to sample a larger selection of treats. Six different tea sandwiches included an open-face salmon, egg salad, potted shrimp, sundried tomato with goat cheese, cucumber, and herbed cheese. We both commented on the high quality of the bread and the ingredients in the sandwiches. Lisa has dined at more tea shops in San Francisco than I have and this was some of the best she had ever had. The tea selection was several pages long with white tea, green teas, fruit teas, and more. We decided on an Assam and the Crown and Crumpet house-blend. The pots were large and we easily could have happily shared a single pot.
Served with butter, jam, clotted cream, and lemon curd were freshly-baked and still-warm scones and crumpets. I don't ever remember an American tea shop offering fresh crumpets before and these were gobbled up immediately. Four scones were served; two with currants and two plain. About silver-dollar sized, at this point in our dining, we were getting full and we hadn't even gotten to our sweets.
In the center of the sweets plate was a bowl of fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries). Surrounding the fruit were miniature cupcakes, brownie bites, lemon curd and blueberry tartlets, almond cookies, and chocolate chip cookies. Quite honestly, with the two ample pots of tea, most of the sweets and two of the scones were packed up and taken home with us.
Attached to the tea room is a shop laden with enticing tschotskes; books, edible treats, jewelry, and whatnot. In the back of the shop is a sitting area complete with digital fireplace, inviting for intimate parties. This was not quite the hoity-toity Neiman Marcus under the Rotunda which would demand the wearing of an Armani suit, but at $21 a person for that dual tea service, Crown and Crumpet is more affordable, relaxed, and inviting.
I'll be back.
This was my first tea place and my gal co-workers and I went there for an ovaries-only outing.
It was too cute - a cuteness overload. Everything was pink inside, like walking into a Sanrio, but instead of Hello Kitty everywhere, you get teas and candies. When I made reservations, the lady was very nice. When we got there, the ladies were very nice. They wore cute, printed aprons, and even the male workers there looked like they came out of Alice in Wonderland (particularly the guy in the suit with the pink collared shirt and fancy tie).
I got the Strawberry Fields green tea, and it was really good. It even smelled delicious, like a strawberry shortcake. We did the Tea for Three, and each person ordered their own tea and got their own teapot, and we got a TOWER of finger foods, from yummy sandwiches at the top, to little desserts (micro cupcakes, blueberry tarts, small brownies, etc.) at the bottom.
And I had my first crumpet! Um. They taste like English muffins.
It was overall a great experience. We all want to go back. Our waitress even offered to take our picture for us. :)
This place is absolutely adorable. The place is kind of small but they were still able to seat us right away.
We ordered a tea for three and while choosing the teas, our waitress helped us with little suggestions. We ordered a Blue Eyes, Strawberry Fields, and Marie Antoinette. I love how the sets have their crown logo. And the sugar jar has heart shaped sugar in them (at least ours did).
The food - I was kind of a little bothered that they didn't split the sandwiches up between three people evenly but what can you do? They did taste good though - salmon creamcheese, cucumber, sundried tomatoe feta cheese, chicken pesto (my favorite), and egg salad. The crumpets are sooo good. Maybe because they put a lot of butter on it. The scones are ok. You get one chocolate chip and one regular. The desserts were also ok but I think we weren't that impressed by them just because we were already really full by the time we reached them.
I really liked the Marie Antoinette tea a lot. The Strawberry Fields smells really good but not exactly my cup of tea. :)
I will definitely come back.
A lovely place to the extreme. Good customer service. Very pricey tho.
Now when you're thinking of afternoon tea, you have several options in San Francisco. You have the choice of the elegant version which you can find at several hotels here, such as the Palace Hotel's Garden Court. You have Tal-Y-Tara Tea & Polo Shoppe out in the outer Richmond District if you feel like avoiding all the fussiness. But if you want to have your girlfriends (or gay boys) come dressed up cute, you come to Crown & Crumpet.
Now for a local coming to Ghirardelli Square, it takes a lot but I'll do it for a friend's birthday. The place is the fantasy of a 7 year old girl who wants to have tea with her stuff animals, complete with pink and white checkered floors, colorful candy filled vases, flower table clothes, pretty tea pots ... I mean it has it all. Granted there aren't any stuffed animals in site, but if you wanted to live out your childhood dream of being fancy and girly complete with tea and friends, you can live it out here.
Our group of 6 was pretty much set with our individual (though large) pots of tea which are filled endlessly till you can no longer hold any more liquid and run outside, to the restroom. I stuck with the Crown & Crumpet private blend which was just fine for me. Yeah, not PG Tips here, but straight up loose leaf stuff. With a dash of milk, I was totally set drinking my English tea.
For each couple, we were set with a 3 plates, filled with 6 different flavored tea sandwiches, crumpets, scones, biscuits, etc. We were set! We were also given a couple sides of fruit and cream, jam & lemon curd for the crumpets and scones. No Marmite here! Excuse, my crumpet needs a spot of jam on top!
The service was excellent and everyone as very attentive to our pots of tea, along with making sure we were enjoying ourselves.
They also had a little shop completely with various items. Think: cute, pretty, pink, girly, adorable.
Everyone had a nice time. Granted we all had to seriously pee after since we had what felt like a couple gallons of tea swishing about our inside, but it was worth it. Sure this place isn't exactly cheap, but looking at the location of it, it's not surprising and it's good to do for a treat. Not exactly my cup of tea (sorry, bad pun) as I'm much more of a Tal-Y-Tara Tea & Polo Shoppe type girl without all the hoopla, but hey, sometimes it's nice to be girly once in a while with friends and pretend like we're 7 years old again. This time though we can drink alcohol (re: Champagne) that comes with our setting and say bad words and not worry Mommy is going to come on over and wash our mouth out with soap.
Nothing like English tea to bring back my memories of England ...
Upon entering Crown and Crumpet you're greeted at the door with a tall table filled with sweets galore. To the right is an eyeful of fun, colorful, and whimsical items in the gift boutique. All around you see shades of pink which include the checker board flooring. English Rose patterns are adorned on table cloths and wall stretchings.
When we entered the door we could hear a table with three women stating they were all there to celebrate their birthdays and before leaving the place the table next to us was also celebrating a birthday just like us. The back wall has a fireplace and sitting area for those who are waiting for a table.
We ordered the tea for two which was absolutely fabulous! The crumpet was toasted to perfection. Unfortunately the crumpets are made elsewhere and not by them. Fortunately, they double toast it to perfection.
The selections of sandwiches are pesto chicken salad, grilled veggies, cucumber with goat cheese, lox with cream cheese, egg salad, and shrimp salad on the top tier of a 3 tier tray, toasted crumpets, plain and raisin scones on the middle tray which can be dressed with a side of jam, lemon curd, butter, or Devonshire cream, and the bottom tray filled with a fruit bowl of fresh strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, fudge, lemon curd tart topped with blueberries, decorated yellow cupcake, and lemon bar. Our selections of strawberry field green tea and mango black tea was refreshing. Our waiter gave us tips on how long to steep our two pots of tea and showed us the teapot contraption which stops your tea from steeping. Some of their signature porcelains have sayings, which make conversations.
No need to fear this review Crown and Crumpet. Service was great, seat was excellent, food and tea was what we expected. Now you can be a little British without flying there.
The good: Establishment will validate for 1 1/2 hours.
The bad: Way too pink for me but that's just me.

Crown & Crumpet (C & C) more than lives up to its tagline: "A room with tea & wit." Love HRH, queens, England, cupcakes, tea and candy? You will love C & C. I want to live there (and possibly die there).
The food and tea are superb and the décor is amazing; it evokes grandma's floral wallpaper but with whimsy. The dining area has ornate mirrors, a framed picture of HRH, antique looking tea accessories, a hanging tea pot, crowns galore, pictures of animals having tea, candy in glass jars, chandeliers, signature china pieces with crowns and much more.
We sat on the comfy floral sofa in front of the fake fire. Afternoon tea service starts at 11 AM, so we selected items from the breakfast menu (choose from scones, crumpets, granola, cinnamon toast, toast with Marmite).
I had the boiled egg (hard or soft) with toast soldiers ($9) which includes a full pot of tea (your choice) or coffee. My Paris tea was truly delicious - vanilla and bergamot. The egg arrived in an egg cup, covered with a felt hen and a dainty silver spoon. The toast was crunchy and perfect for dipping in the egg yolk. I tried a scone - really nice, properly made. And the pot of sugar had tea cup shaped sugar cubes. HRH would approve.
I noticed they had adorable tea cozies but didn't put one on the tea pot. The tea stayed nice and hot though, throughout our leisurely breakfast.
The gift shop has so many cupcake items: cupcake aprons, cupcake pin cushions, cupcake candles, and a cupcake tea service! The girly shop also carries cookbooks, jewelry with crowns and flowers, tea kettles, tea cozies, handmade dolls, British candy, silver tea strainers, shaped sugar cubes (hearts, flowers, butterflies - no crowns or tea cups), and their signature tea blends. The handmade one of a kind Marie Antoinette dolls left me speechless. Each one has a unique hairstyle and dress!
The bill was accompanied by a complimentary tea bag and the receipt says "The queen wishes you to return very soon." I must obey the queen.
I attended a bridal shower here and thought that it was a delightful way to spend an afternoon. I loved all the natural light, the eclectic and bright colored decor and all the attention to detail. The owners, Amy and Chris, were sweet and the food was great. We were about 16 people and had our own little area in the corner - both couches and a table. Unfortunately, we couldn't all sit around one table or all squeeze on the couches, so it made it a little challenging to move around and talk to everyone in the group, but no one seemed to mind. The hostesses said Amy and Chris were very easy to work with in planning the event and I think they paid about $25/person which included our tea, sweets, tea sandwiches and a little goodie bag to take home. Most importantly, the bride had a great time and I would definitely come back here again.
Note: they do validate the first 1.5 hours in the Ghiradelli Garage, which winds up being a lot cheaper than street parking.
enormous pots of tea and a very down-to-earth pastry set with the sandwiches and scones that are too-die-for. the decor is (a little too) cute, but honestly you can't beat the sunlight streaming in nor the bright smiles of the servers who really know their tea. great place to have a girl's day out and/or a birthday party, but a little too pricey for your young daughter's birthday party, so please, do not spoil her. save it for when she's like eleven or twelve and knows how to appreciate real jam.
CUTE!! You can't help but come to this place..it's set up like a tea room with lots of cute chairs and tables and lots and lots of goodies.
My husband and I originally wanted to get something at Ghirardelli but after seeing the LONG line out the door, we walked around looking for something else. My husband darted in and immediately wanted to check it out (LOL). They were full inside (Make a Reservation!) but we were seated outside which can get breezy and cold being very close to the water. Bring a jacket!
Service here is wonderful and very attentive! I was impressed how nice it was especially the man with the pink shirt on. Checking out the menu I wasn't really sure what to expect because I have never had tea at a tea room before. Prices are a bit on the high side in my opinion for what we got. But I have to say that the tea here is probably the best I have ever had so it was worth it. I ordered the Strawberry Fields green tea which was both our favorite. My husband ordered the Peach Crumpet white tea which was very light and refreshing. If you are into stronger teas, it might not be the best choice.
The one thing that bothered me and which why I don't give it 5 stars is that on holidays and weekends they require an $8 a person minimum. It irks me when establishments do that to their customers. So my husband and I each ordered a hot tea and then shared two crumpets and 6 tea sandwiches. The crumpets were hot and delicious and came with 4 toppings (butter, lemon curd, whipped butter and strawberry jam). All were pretty good but my husband didn't like the lemon curd (I liked it...it tastes just like lemon meringue pie!). Our 6 sandwiches were okay...I could make them better at home (and I have for friends' showers!). None of them stood out as outstanding but my husband loved the egg salad one and I enjoyed the red pepper one. I think next time I will try their scones. Oh and at the end they give you a tiny candy bracelet with a pink crown on it...so cute!
Perfect place for a tea party with friends, birthday party for girls, bachelorette parties and bridal/baby showers. Just make sure to make a reservation! They also validate parking.
We'll be back....and my husband even enjoyed it so don't be afraid ladies to bring your guys here!
We came here for tea on Valentine's Day. We had a nice time. The place was cute. Lots to browse between the goodies around the tearoom as well as at the shop. Service was warm, homey and efficient. The door prizes were fun. The food was the weakest link. Personally, I prefer Lovejoy's.
Since it's a special occasion, there was a special menu. It included tea sandwiches (smoked salmon, roast beef horseradish, chicken pesto, cucumber cream cheese, egg salad, and brie & pear), scones & crumpets w/ clotted cream, butter, jam, lemon curd, sausage rolls w/ mustard, chocolate covered strawberries, shortbreads, petit four, mini cupcakes, rose champagne and of course, tea. The sausage rolls were good, but they weren't authentic. They were made with mini sausages instead of sausage meat. The bread on the sandwiches were surprisingly authentic, dry and stale! Everything else were alright.
The quantity of food and drinks weren't bad for the price, which was somewhere around $40 per person. That included a favor of candies and teabags for each person. The price of the Flying Saucers was crazy though at 5 for $3. That's about triple the amount compare to other places. I guess they got to find a way to pay that expensive rent....
Crown & Crumpet is an explosion of cuteness and girlyness. I love it. The decor is very much whimsical with a mixture of pinks, lavendars, and other pretty pastel colors of the rainbow. They have so many things on their shelves, tables and walls that you really have to sit back and soak it all in.
We came late last night and found out that all stores in Ghirardelli closed at 9 p.m. So, we stopped by for a pot of tea. Even the china they have is super cute and the saucers have a little saying when you remove the tea cup. We sat at the back couch facing the fireplace. To our left we enjoyed a beautiful sunset. Service was spectacular. We choose from one of the many teas, a strawberry green tea and a cake. They also have breakfast, lunch and tea service during the day. It was very enjoyable to sit on the pink, green, blue couch and stare at the fireplace and enjoy fine brewed tea. Your check comes with a tea bag to go - very cute.
There is also a gift shop up in front with the cutest girly things imaginable. I was eyeing cupcake cups and candles. How cute!!

First and foremost...my ideal meal would be a hamburger, fries and a coke. To be quite honest, I don't even like tea unless Arizona comes before it. Drinking out of a teacup with pinkie in the air is a very foreign concert to me. However, I was beguiled by female wiles to go with her, and i don't regret it one bit.
Strolling by, i was greeted by a plethora of pink. Never seen so much pink in my life. Poking my head in, I was pretty much the only dood besides the waiter. With the peasant girl sensing my hesitation, she tried to lead me astray, saying she only wanted to look and take pictures. However, that is the oldest test in the book and I marched in, looked at the host dead in the eye and said, "tea for 2 good sir".
I do not have much experience in teahouses, but this place looked like it was ripped from its foundation in England and transported here. Tea for 2 includes your choice of teas and a myriad of little sandwiches and treats. She ordered some crown tea and I got some strawberry tea. In a couple minutes, 2 steaming pots were set before us and we were given instructions on something like, "seeping, put pin in this..., blah blah blah". I was so hungry and was just eying the sandwiches, if you could even call them that, that were the size of a human pinkie. I gobbled them up-the pesto/tuna one is the best. They are not even big enough to bite, you just literally throw those lil suckers in the back of your mouth.
I do not like tea, so I had a couple sips to be polite. The crumpets were so good tho. I always imagined crumpets to be bland and crummy...the name itself sounds so boring...but it was so good. Imagine a flattened croissant. You just gotta douse it in butter and jam. I could eat a hundred of 'em. I hate scones...so I didn't like them. The lil snacks were not that great...especially their rock like mini cupcakes. However, this place shouldn't be rated on food per se...its the novelty and ambiance and it gets my knuckles of approval. Maybe you will see girls in tea dresses having their tea parties...the trick is to give them a salute and they will oblige with a courtesy. The hostess is very nice and attentive and flatters you with compliments that will be sure to make you blush.
if you are a female, you will have a rad time as it will prolly fulfill a childhood fantasy. if you are a male, you will be subjected to countless .jpegs from your female counterpart. Just eat the good sandwiches while your girl is occupied with picture taking. Just remember keep your pinkie in the air whilst drinking tea. It is frowned down no too...har har har.
some girlfriends decided to plan a girls outing at this place - and forwarded the website to us.
i recoiled at the pics - "what is this doily, pink place?!?!?". i'll try anything once, so joined the girls.
in person, crown and crumpet was actually decorated in a modern way, the staff was tongue-in-cheek + fun, and the food/drink were actually pretty good!
i guess the place seemed gimmicky when looking at pics - but it was actually a fun experience!
we drank tons of champagne, but it wasn't too expensive. extensive wine list, and the finger sandwiches/scones do fill you up.
good times! great for bridal/baby showers + good location since they have these huge sun drenched windows facing the water.
This sublime pink place is the perfect spot for afternoon tea with a good girlfriend. You can chat the afternoon away and not be hurried. Sit at a charming table or cozy up on the sofa in front of the fire burning on the plasma TV screen ... it's all good. Worth a visit to Ghirardelli Square! The full afternoon tea offers plenty to eat -- you can skip lunch or dinner or both. Great gift shop too ... I made a note to go back at Christmastime.
Cutest English tea place ever. I love the atmosphere and the pink surroundings. Very good place for your camera...haha..
We ordered the menu for 3 for three of us. All of us were kinda of hungry before entering. The 3 tiers didn't look like its a lot, but god, we couldn't finish all the food.. maybe we had too much tea.. haha... anyways, portion wise, i think it is decent. Price wise, it is a bit expensive i think. But if you have never been there before, it is worth a try.
Oh..parking is a pain and garage parking is like $2.25 per 20 min. and they validate the first hour and half.
