Review from Brittany J.
Austin, TX
I have spent entirely too much money at Crown and Anchor over the last six years. It's my standard go-to, but it's hard for me to identify what makes me love it so much. There's not really one thing in particular.
But I do love:
1. They only serve beer & limited wine=a chill crowd.
2. I usually like the music.
3. Super close to everywhere I have ever lived in Austin. Clearly I have not branched out in terms of neighborhoods.
4. Very affordable.
5. Good and cheap burger, great-for-a-bar chicken nachos.
6. Pretty empty in the afternoons=perfect place to have a beer and work remotely (if you enjoy a drink while working remotely...)
7. Can take a book or board game on weekend days without anyone giving you the stink eye
8. Shows soccer games
9. Dog friendly
10. For the sake of having an even 10 points, I also love that the two ladies restrooms have chalkboards and I refuse to pee without leaving a message.
What I don't like, because let's be honest, there are very few places where I don't not like something:
1. Being mistaken for still being in college. For the record, I am not a 7th year senior just because I still frequent my favorite college bar. So what if I'm wearing the same old t-shirt and sperrys and carrying the same tote bag as the last time you saw me, in 2007?
On second thought, I might need a new bar. -

Love it. Great beer with impressively good bar food (the burger especially--so delicious for a little bar burger!) at nice prices. Moreover this is always an awesome atmosphere for kicking back. I've been here a lot to watch games (plenty of TVs) and even more times just to hang out. The bar is a good little spot for a small group, but the outside table are my favorite because of how relaxed a group can be out there. Ahhhh.
I only leave off a star because of the limited menu and mediocre nachos. Drinks burgers and atmosphere = perfect for what it is! -

Went here for lunch and the options are pretty limited. Burgers, hotdogs, nachos, chicken sandwich, and grilled cheese. HOWEVER, they generally have a couple good beers specials (today was Ranger IPA, and Fat Tire Amber) and the bartenders were fun.

This was my bf's "home" bar when he attended UT. He spent many a night throwing darts and as he has put it spending his parents money. I accompanied him on a recent trip to Austin and a stop here was on the agenda. I can see why he spent so much time here. Cool location. I was a big fan of the giant Connect 4 outside. Had the cheeseburger which was delicious and kicked back and enjoyed a beer. Service was great. Def a return stop when I visit Austin again.

Love this place. Good taps, decent pub grub. Have both indoor and outdoor tables.

One of my favorite bars to go to when I was in college. I would never feel old or uncomfortable to return.
This fine establishment has great beer selection, great food (burgers), and a great atmosphere. The staff and crowd are both always friendly. Inside, you will find a couple of booths, two dartboards, and a pool table. Outside, there is a relaxing, covered patio that is great for drinking cold beer on a summer afternoon or evening. You will often see people bringing their dogs to have a beer outside. Super!
I love EVERYTHING about Crown and Anchor! I wish I still lived in Austin! -

Great cheap burgers and fries. Perfect hang out for grad students. Don't expect friendly service but they are on top of things.

Austin, TX
Great beer selection, and I don't care if the reason that the burgers are so good is because they haven't cleaned the grill in years - they are amazing. It's college-y, but also a lot of neighborhood people, too. Sometimes a little tricky to get a table, but well worth the wait.

i like this place, friends who went to school here don't like it because its apparently very "grad student"-y, but i dont know any students and don't really notice the crowd. I just dig decent beer and great burgers and fries.

A low-key bar with kick-ass homemade veggie burgers and a killer beer selection? Plus pool tables and a huge patio?! YES!!!
The beer is always cold, the people are always friendly, and the veggie burger is one of the best in Austin. Get it with jalapenos and swiss cheese - so good. Yum. -

My favorite Austin haunt. Drink cider, eat jalapeno nachos, & pet strangers' dogs. My favorite Crown & Anchor Pub moment was watching the presidential election results roll in. The TV was set to Green Party coverage of the results, but --- as I recall --- the general consensus among the patrons was that we'd rather they switch the channel to dem party coverage of the election results, so the TV channel was changed & everyone was enjoying beer among new friends while anxiously awaiting the results.

I pretty much just go here to eat, drink, and hang out with friends. This was our preferred hang out bar during college. A couple of pool tables and darts boards are inside, and they even have some sort of professional dart league thing going on there from time to time. You will probably be sitting outdoors where most of the seating is, if there's any available on a busy summer night. Beer prices for the 'good beers' are relatively cheap. It is very close to UT campus (North campus specifically). The only downside is that it's not the best place to meet new people at due to the fact that most people are sitting and tend to be with groups.

Review from Chris M.
I live 8 min from this place and I can't believe I've missed it for the past 3 years, or for the past 11 since I have been in Austin, this is one cool hangout. Better late than never, it's a great place for burgers and beers.
Terry was one of the bartenders, really cool and customer service oriented. We sat at the bar and ordered their mushroom burger w/ fries and split it - - wow, we should have ordered two - - the burgers are excellent here. Nothing special, just very simple and straight-forward. The fries were in abundance - - very cripsy and we loved them!
It was so good that I went back during the weekend and ordered a take-home burger, however, this time they went way short on the fries - - I'm talking about half. I was somewhat discouraged, and it was the same cook too, so I just approached him and asked why the big difference (maybe they decided to cut back) and he said - no problem - and went back and got me some extra fries. Sweet.
No all service is spot-on. One of the bartenders wasn't too friendly and outgoing, she's all business and doesn't really go out of her way to make you feel welcome. I mentioned it was our first time here and she just gave me that "okay, that's nice, now we got that outta the way - wtf do you want?". That sentiment was also noticed by my friends, they didn't care to deal with her, and she made it easy not to tip, so I just redirected to Terry and he was awesome. Very attentive and courteous.
Their food is very reasonably priced here, now my local staple for sure. I wish they have more bar and inside seating, outside is nice to hang but it can get quite noisy. At least there's outside seating too! Excellent beer selection, so many to choose. Hot dogs were pretty darn good, but the burgers are excellent and they'll make my local list.Listed in: My A-List For Burgers

This place makes a really great bacon cheeseburger. Not just great for a bar, but actually great in general, and reasonably priced, too. The atmosphere is always really chill, too, even on a Friday night.
My only real complaint as someone who is under 21 is that they don't have fountain drink so you end up paying $1.25 for a can of diet coke. Also, parking is a little difficult. -

Crown is definitely in the rotation of regular hang out spots in my group. Of all those spots, this is the place I never want to miss.
Maybe it comes with frequenting a place enough, but Crown has always felt homey. Whether it's inside on a quiet night when you can score one of the booths, or outside when complete strangers are squishing groups together so everyone can sit down, it's just comfortable.
The beer selection is awesome. I'll admit, I haven't always been much of a beer drinker... cue Crown and Anchor. With their wide variety I quickly found my beer niche. And there's not much that's more comforting to me than beer with a burger. And wouldn't you know.. Crown has a damn good burger. Possibly a favorite of mine. The fries are great, and as many others have mentioned, they've got Cholula and malt vinegar on the tables to accompany said fries.
With great atmosphere, beer selection, food, and friendly service, what else do you really need?Listed in: Alcohol!

I am not one to complain (you can see by my star distribution chart that Yelp oh so kindly creates), but this place was just A-OK.
Bottom line: Expect to be treated like a jerk. If that doesn't bother you, then you've found your home!
Positives:
*Great Location near the stadium (which was where we were going)
*Lovely patio, plenty of seating, dog friendly
*Burgers were wonderful, food came out fast, and were cheap!
*They have CRISPIN ON TAP! (And by the pitcher!) :)
Negatives:
*Very rude staff
Anyone who worked there that I came in contact with was a complete jerk. I walked up to the bar b/c I assumed after sitting at the table for 10 min and no one came to take my order that it was self-service. In fact, many employees walked by me many times as I looked around and never mentioned that I should just go inside and order at the bar. I am completely fine with self-service and it was my bad for not knowing, so not docking them on that.
The bartender never said a word the entire transaction, then just slammed my pitcher of Crispin on the counter. I had to asked for glasses because he never gave me any and just slammed them on the counter and didn't say a word.
This is when I get frustrated after serving myself, paying you 20% tip, inviting 10 new people to your bar and then you are still being a jerk. I'm a softie, what can I say. A smile, a "hello", a something goes a long way. That's all it would have taken for me to decide to spend my money here again.
*Note: I arrived here at 11:30 am and the place was virtually empty (about 10 patrons) and left around 12:45 (maybe 20 patrons). Being busy was not the cause of the bad service. -
Review from Cris G.
Crown and Anchor is what every bar should be. A gathering place for friends to visit, folks to watch sports, play pool, darts, people watch, video games, and a cool wait staff playing great music if there isn't a big game on.
They serve one of the meanest burgers in Austin at a good price. The fries are awesome too. They are open for lunch, and they don't just serve burgers. Not that I've been able to order anything else.
But it's a popular place. Expect crowds and lines for beer at the typical times, and because of it's proximity to UT, the school effects it a lot too.
Good beer specials. -

The Top 5 Reasons I Love Crown & Anchor:
1. Beer--They have an amazing selection and there's always something new to try.
2. Burgers--I just might kick a puppy to get one of their burgers. Damn they're good.
3. Prices--It's cheap.
4. Dive bar--Chill and relaxed.
5. Nostalgia--As an Aggie, it sorta reminds me of being at the Chicken. -

I guess I must be feeling nostalgic lately. Because several times this past month, I have craved the simple combination of bread-meat-cheese-bread known as the burger, and when this craving strikes, only one burger will do:
Crown and Anchor's.
But see, the thing is, I'm a lawyer. Consequently, this means I went to law school. At UT Law, no less. And Crown and Anchor is like the off-campus annex of UT Law. I've had professors hold class there. I've had society happy hours there. I've skipped many a class there, and celebrated after almost every final there.
Ok, you're thinking, so what's weird about that? Well, mainly because I hated law school, and so these aren't exactly pleasant associations for me. And yes, the deliciousness that is the burgers and fries basket at Crown and Anchor, topped off with a pitcher of a great beer, just totally overcomes any negative law-school relatedness for me.
It's just that good. -

Anyone who knows me knows that I love pub food and drinks! The more dive-ish a joint is, the more I'm going to like it.
The beer selection is awesome.
But be prepared: The beer, in typical British style, may not be as cold as you are used to. If you REALLY like your beer to be icy cold, ask for a baggie of ice to submerge in your pitcher of draft. It will be chilled to your delightful satisfaction in no time!
Do you need another reason to hit it up English-style? Crown and Anchor is dog-friendly! (My dogs says, "Woof!" in her best British accent.) -

Unpretentious atmosphere, super cool old Austin dudes working the bar, dog friendly, great music on the stereo, awesome patio, great beer deals, and one of the best greasy bar burgers around--thin patty, 'merican cheese, crispy salt-laden fries.... you get the picture.
My favorite place for both pursuing and ameliorating hangovers. -
Review from Alberto N.
Austin, TX
Not a damn pretentious bone in anything that has to do with this place. This is one of the easiest places in Austin to go and throw down a couple of beers from the very wide, delicious, great, yummy, inexpensive, and the while still humble beer selections. And what better to go with your beer than a greasy hamburger with all of the fixings and some crisp fries? Plus they have my all time favorite hot sauce (CHOLULA FOR LIFE!) sitting right next to the ketchup! That show's they've got the brains to match the talent.
They've got an OK amount of indoor seating where you can check out some darts or play a round or two of pool while you enjoy your food and brew. Or if you're one of those guys who like the buck hunting games or golf arcades, they have that for you too (though I've never seen someone play them). There is more outdoor seating with plenty of t.v.'s so it's a great place to take in some sun and watch the game too.
I love this place and its close to the top of places I'd choose to just grab a brew and enjoy being alive. I hope I don't see the day that crown isn't open any more. -

Review from Mary V.
This petite Asian girl almost got into a bar fight here. Yep, that's right. ME! I must've had about five glasses of beer in me when some guy came over to our table on the patio and started talking mess to one of my friends. At first, everyone at the table thought this was just regular guy talk... you know, calling other people certain explicit body parts just because he was drunk.
Well, when we realized he was serious and was aiming to start a fight, I defiantly stood up and started yelling back at him, returning F-bombs back at him just as he was to us. My boyfriend didn't want me to get hit so he grabbed me from behind and tried to pull me back and calm me down.
The jerk went away though, and everyone went back to enjoying their beer and food. Right after, one Crown & Anchor employee came out to check up on us and we assured them that the fire died down. Perhaps they would've been quicker if we hadn't been on the patio, but it was all cool. Another employee--one much burlier than the first--asked if we were all right and got the name of the instigator. He looked ready to pop the guy like a ripe pimple. It was cool to know that we had our backs covered.
Not only are your burgers and fries still cheap and delicious, but you guys at Crown & Anchor are badass mo'fos, and that's why you get five stars now.Listed in: Campus Grub, Review of the Day?!, Beer me!

Drinking and eating on a limited budget? Get yourself to Crown.
On a Friday afternoon, you might see a mix of old time regulars, college kids from UT, or guys playing hooky from work checking email on their laptops. The veteran staff moves the lines quickly when the hoards descend on warm sunny days.
The beers range from a wide selection of craft beers on tap to domestic trainer beers for the young drinkers from UT.
Most people order Burgers and fries that are delivered to your table hot from the grill. My favorite is the BLT sandwich.
There's usually plenty of parking in their lot, and a bike rack if you live in the hood. -

Excellent selection of local beers, lots on tap, and a huge porch. The bacon cheeseburger was fantastic. The staff was also very friendly and helpful in recommending beers for someone visiting from out of state looking to try some new breweries. Don't go here if you're looking at drinking anything other than beer though.

Look. Go here. Get a pitcher of beer. Whatever they have on special (and their specials are AMAZING). And get cheese fries.
These are the best cheese fries anywhere.
Then get another pitcher, because they're really inexpensive. -

Crown and Anchor Pub is the place my boyfriend and I go when we just want to hang out, have a beer, and watch some sports. We love the bartenders and the beer selection. Also, their food is pretty good too. It has become my neighborhood/hipster-free bar. (I live on Manor Rd.)

I'll admit, I'm a bit biased. I live a couple blocks away, and my main reason for frequenting Crown is because I can walk there (and home, drunk) in about 5 minutes.
However, that doesn't mean Crown's only perk is how close I am to it. It's an awesome bar. Here's why:
* It's NOT over-run by pompous hipsters, UT jackasses, or old farts.
* The music they play is a great mix of underground hip-hop and indie rock.
* The draft beer selection is huge, and they've got practically everything else in the world by the bottle.
* They run great deals on select draft beers every night (read the signs).
* There are plenty of places to sit comfortably, inside and out.
* They've got two pool tables and two dart boards.
* The bartenders are attentive and friendly, and they're always busing off your table.
* The atmosphere is pleasant and eclectic--lots of cool neons.
* The food is actually GOOD, and it costs what bar food should cost (try a jalapeno burger with fries).
* They even have malt vinegar.
The downsides:
* One of the ID checker girls has a lousy demeanor.
* The mens bathroom is gross sometimes.
* It can be hard to find a place to sit Thursday-Saturday.
Many reviews on here speak from the UT student perspective. I'm not a student, but am in my mid-20s, and I don't feel the painful "student" vibe associated with many other bars nearby.

Crown and Anchor was one of the first pubs I visited after moving to Austin, and I've been going here regularly for 4 years now. It's a great neighborhood pub where you're likely to see someone you know and guaranteed to get a great beer and great food. It's proximity to north campus and its separation from the Drag make it an ideal law school hangout, so you're likely to see some of those guys around.
The burgers here are amazing. Perfect pub food. Juicy, salty, cheesy, greasy, and served with shockingly good fries, I more often come to Crown for dinner than for just a drink. Also, their veggie burger is great! I don't normally like them that much, but this one is awesome.
They have daily pint and pitcher specials, so check out the board before you order. Pool and Darts keep you busy and thirsty for more. This place is an awesome pub to grab a bite or hang out all night. -

I love the Crown & Anchor. It delivers exactly what you hope it will, and then some. Outdoor tables "anchored" in by a big, fat nautical rope, facing the lowering sun, delicious and huge burger-and-fries baskets for around $5, cold, cool beer selection, and ample condiments and napkins within easy reach . . . I'm a happy girl.
Bottles of malt vinegar and Cholula can have that effect.
When the sun is in just the right place, sparkling through the trees across the street, I want to pick the whole place up and drop it back down on a beach somewhere.
The food doesn't need to be gourmet, it's delicious as it is. The service doesn't need to be any more attentive than it is. They set it up right.
Best veggie burger I've ever had, it's crisp and flavorful, and I'm eating it by choice. I am no stranger to the meats.
Crown & Anchor is a true example of a solid business plan, the fulfillment of a neighborhood need, and a group of people who care (fries that come out hot and salted . . . shouldn't be that rare but it is). -

Went for the first time tonight and blown away! The burgers... $4 for burger and fries- cheaper than McDonalds and absolutely amazing. The fries are crisp and the meat is good, the buns are sweet, the veggies, A+ for the food!
The beer selection was good, pitchers cheap and staff very friendly. The Sunset Wheat comes with a ton of orange slices. Smoking is a plus, and I saw the cutest dogs. The crowd was dude-bro free and very chill.
EDIT: this has become my favorite neighborhood hangout since my first time. 5 stars!Listed in: I'll probably die of a heart…

I think it's difficult to separate yourself from a really great experience at some places, and for Crown and Anchor, the Fourth of July this year set the bar for me. This year I woke up, played a round of golf with some friends, and got off the course just about the time that it was becoming unbearably hot outside. So we were famished, and headed over to the Crown and Anchor for lunch, where we sat over a cold one (I'm going through a Dunkelweiss stage) and ate what felt like at the time the first and only burger I've ever had in my life.
Couple this with the fact that the Nathan's hot dog eating competition was firing up on ESPN, that ownership was friendly but not detached, that the A/C was cranked and the company good, and there was plenty to like. I always remember that I need to keep this spot in my regular rotation, and a day like the Fourth just might have cemented it. Thanks, Crown and Anchor, for a great afternoon. And that burger wasn't half bad either.Listed in: Austin!, Pubs Across America

I do love the Crown and Anchor. It's totally my style of place... low-key, patio, lots of beers, pub grub, and good mix of young and old (people, that is). The patio is great for you, your friends, and your pup. There are some TV's outside in case you're looking to watch a game - but it's definitely not a sports bar.
I have heard many people complain about the "too-cool" service. Like, they're way too cool to wait on your sorry ass. But I haven't really had that problem. The other day when I went in there, there was a guy that was giving me that slightly cool 'tude... but when I asked him about it, he said that he was just having a bad day b/c they were running out of shit. Well, okay... but don't take it out on me, please. Shit happens man... get over it. -

Any time is a good time for Crown & Anchor. It's one of those great bars that always stays lively so you don't feel out of place getting a beer at one in the afternoon on a weekday. Good prices, good beers on tap. I've never had a problem with the service either...I've actually always thought they were pretty nice. The music and sports are always at just the right volume so you can hear what's going on, but you can also have a conversation with your friend.
The Crown & Anchor is just as good on a Sunday afternoon as it is at 1:30 in the morning. And they have wifi so you can totally get work done if you're that type.
My only complaint is that the parking lot is a little too small when the place gets really busy. But there's paid parking across the street which isn't paid after 5 or 6. So that's pretty swell. -

I first started tinkering with Cholula and ketchup mixing at Crown and Anchor. I give 5 stars for starting that love affair that has lasted a lifetime. Damn. Their fries are perfect for it. I wonder if their kitchen is still open? I wonder what I have in my fridge that needs some Choluchup?
Mock it now. Try it later in the safety of your own home. Know that I am right.
They might have the best burgers in town. I know. I know. Casino el Camino. Billy's. Hut's. I'd put Crown up against any of them. Also, pretty cheap, for the quality you're getting.
Also, super dog friendly. Radley loves the Crown.Listed in: 10 least funny reviews, Lent Aid 2008

I brought a bunch of people from the lab here for lunch yesterday (Friday). First of all, it's cheap. The tab for 8 of us was around $50, but then again I think only one person had a beer; the rest soft drinks.
Secondly, the food is pretty good. Most had burgers, some grilled chicken sandwiches. I had their fancy nachos with beef and it was quite tasty.
Thirdly, they have nice big tables so it's easy for a large group to find seating. Lot of fans, so it was comfortable even in the middle of a hot Austin summer day.
And finally, the staff is great. The guy taking orders at the cash register was polite and funny, and had no problems understanding the orders of our non-native-English speakers. The runners bringing the food out were fast and efficient and the tables were cleared and cleaned immediately when people left.
I have a bad habit of looking around when at pubs or restaurants and mentally making a "to-do" list for them. I'd really like to take a pressure washer to their covered outdoor area, but that's just the compulsive side of me talking. -
Review from Doryan R.
4 stars is for a couple of reasons here.
I'm addicted to this place.
I think it started when I worked down the street at Trudy's (evil hellhole that it is), and came here many times per week. Ah, the younger days of playing pool, drinking beer, and eating jalapeno cheese burgers (I asked for grilled onions on that..mmmm).
No, they're not always the best. It depends on who is cooking and what mood they're in.
Thing is about this place, these aren't your nouveau giant meaty crazy topping burgers. These are the ones you used to get down at the diner. Thin patties. All the usual fixins. A couple of variations. Diner style.
Fries used to be better, but now they're more consistent, so that's good.
Nowadays, I go for a couple of things.
Standby: The Veggie Burger. There's just something about a deep fried veggie patty that gets me all emotional. If you get it, ask them to toss it in teriyaki and Cholula. Definitely makes it better.
Alternative: Chicken tacos. They used to be the best in town. Since someone complained about the teriyaki and Cholula in them, they started making them plain and that sucks. Thanks to ME, you can ask them to put it back in. Seriously, I bought T-Rex my very own bottle so I could have it my way. The way it should be. You're welcome, Austin.
Guilty pleasure: Nachos. I get black bean and cheese, add on lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Extra Jalapenos. I likes it spicy!
If I could get away, I would. But I can't. They all know me. If I don't show up, they'll get worried. I have an obligation, see?
Plus, the prices can't be beat.Listed in: Veggie Burgers!, My Neighborhood
