This place is pretty cool. First off, it's free. Unless you're some sort of art geek, you worry about paying an admission fee. If you're not the museum type or have never been to a museum, this kind of stuff worries you. Ask a person in a lower income bracket about their feelings about a museum and then you'll see.
There was an old lady that said to me that this is the reason that America is poor. She was describing the vast amount of space used to showcase art. In her opinion, everything should be lined up next to one another to save space.
So not everyone appreciates a museum. The same can be said to the demographic that uses Yelp. It takes a certain kind of person to post up their picture and take a public position about a place.
Secondly, this place regularly rotates their collection so that there's something new every once in a while. It keeps the place interesting and makes it worth visiting time and again. It's very clean and the staff keeps a keen eye to make sure the rules are followed. -

Stopped in here after visiting the Nasher Scultpure museum across the street. Pretty cool place. Loved that it was free (donations are gladly accepted). Took about an hour to walk through both stories, although we skipped the videos they had playing.
Great collection or detailed, historical art work. -

The Crow Collection is a gift to Dallas. It is free and offers a limited number of high quality pieces from throughout Asia. The collection displays a wide range of items. There is jade from China, armor from Japan, Tibetan sand paintings and impressive architectural pieces from India. It is hard to quibble with free but with the main attraction being a small number of permanent collection items, this is not a museum that you would need to go very often. The space works for what is but is no architectural masterpiece but again there is no admission fee so these quibbles are made up for by this fact.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon, Feb 5, 2011.
This is a nice free exhibit, 2 stories. We probably walked through the thing in a quick hour. I don't know the details of the exhibits, though I spotted another review mentioning rotating exhibits.
You can't beat free, and I thought the place was a great way to kill an hour with a cultural experience. I haven't been to many museums, but this is definitely on my thumbs up list.Listed in: Dallas, TX

Amazing! This was my first time at the museum. I was there AFTER hours on a Sunday for a wedding. I was with the photographer helping her. This place is awesome. So full of culture and artifacts. Also I have to say the most unique wedding experience to date.

This is such a nice museum. I've never been here before and I'm glad I got to check this free museum out. The artwork in here is gorgeous and and it's fun to see how well preserved things are. Look for the coke can art. It seems bleh at first but look into and you'll discover why it's there :D

I come here for the contemporary exhibits (4 stars), which change frequently, and have been quit good. Todays highlight was some ball point pen drawings by NY based artist Il Lee. Simple, kinetic, landscapes done entirely with your every day ball point pen. There was even a display case with used pens he'd used. A few months before that were colorful cartoony paintings by Yang Jin Long, that were tantalizing.
I breezed through the carved jade figurines of the permenant collection (2 stars), but enjoyed the religious Indian art, complete with explainations of how Ganeesh lost his tusk.
Free admission always (5 stars), just bring money for the meter.Listed in: Best Contemporary Art…

As I've gotten older I've come to appreciate the fine arts.
I had never been to the Asian Art museum before, it just wasn't something on the top of my "to do" list. I had some family in town, so we decided to try it. It's so beautiful and modern inside. It's not a big museum, but it will definitely take you a while to look around. I saw some amazing Jade artifacts dating back to 500 AD. Pretty cool. Another amazing tapestry that apparently took almost 200 years to complete. Ah really?
In the back they had an art show from Ka Jeung, who I love. It was of his recent trips to East Asia. The pictures were absolutely stunning.
In the lower level they were having a "show" (I guess) of this little cute Asian woman and her assistant folding screens. I didn't get it, but the music was cool.
Gift shop is awesome. Loved.
At times I literally found myself entranced by the beauty and the craftsmanship of some of these artifacts. I mean think about it, they didn't have ANY of the technology we have now and look at what they made.
That to me, is amazing. Dallas really is lucky to have amazing museums downtown. After you hit this up, go across the street to the Nasher.
A lovely surprise for this little intimate museum.Listed in: Mind Expansion

If not coming for the art/artifacts, come for the ambiance.
I came for a wedding reception. Very picture friendly with water falls and water fountains. Beautiful facilities and an interesting aesthetically pleasing layout of the different galleries. Easy lighting.
Zen-tastic choice for a soiree. -

This place will always have a place in my heart. The people here are extremely nice. They are always excited to educate people about Asian art and I even had a representative from the Crow Collection come speak to my organization about Asian art. About a week later I organized a group tour for my organization to visit and they were so accommodating. From giving us a personal tour guide to telling us exactly where to park.
Like other Yelpers said, it's FREE. It's not a big museum but it has a lot of fascinating art.
If you like volunteering, this is the best place for it! You get to help out and attend these events that usually only JADE members can attend or they cost money. Everything is very well organized and all the events are really COOL! So give them a holler! -

I'm a "wellness" member of this museum, so I started coming here for the Yoga session weekly in May. I am loving it! I was lucky enough to have my first yoga session in my entire life with Michelle who teaches Iyengar Yoga. She is a great instructor! Unfortunately she no longer teaches there, I am going to miss her!

I love this place. Like unconditionally. I'll tell you why.
We have a "hidden" gem dedicated to Asian art in what I deem the Dallas Trifecta - Crow Collection, Nasher and the DMA. Taken from the website: Located in the Arts District of downtown Dallas, The Crow Collection is a permanent set of galleries dedicated to the arts and cultures of China, Japan, India and Southeast Asia.
I won't describe the collection or exhibitions that are inside - I want you to pay the museum a visit and partake in the splendor yourself. What I will discuss are the special events and community education held here.
Throughout the years, I've met a plethora of talented artists, scholars, collectors, curators - the list goes on. Learned more about other cultures via family festival days. Exposed to collections that I would have to travel thousands of miles to see. I even had the opportunity to host a cultural community event of my own a few years back.
As I've been living in Austin for the past few years, I've since let my JADE membership lapse but plan to renew. JADE is for individuals that are 21-45 with an interest in Asian Art and culture. Why join? Because you get invited to member previews, advance announcements of exhibitions, free parking in the Crow center and invitation to 4 JADE events throughout the year. Check the website for more details.
All in all - just love that we're blessed to have this in the metroplex. And I won't let my membership lapse again! -

A Nice Small Free Asian Art Museum.
The Crow Collection is conveniently located in the Arts District, and a short hop from the DMA.
Admission is completely FREE and there are two floors of exhibits. The museum is well maintained and has a brand new feel to it.
The exhibits rotate, but I liked the black and white photos of China. The museum seems to focus on East Asian and Indian art. -

FREE.
Who doesn't love that four letter word???
Planning your time here is a guarantee one hour - but oh fun!
Entering we met a docent w/ so much enthusiasm - it was contagious! After explaining the levels a bit, we set out to explore. First level is Japanese art - scrolls, 2 beautiful byobu, and trinket boxes.
Up the elevator to floor 2, you will be visiting China - jade collection, calligraphy items, LOADS of snuff bottles. Go past the hallway w/ the thousand paper cranes personally made by Japanese students and shipped to the museum (really check out the story, it's heartbreaking), and you will find Indian/Tibetan statues/scrolls.
Go back to the China room and up the stairs (or back to elevator) to level three of the mezzazine and you will encounter three Japanese armor suits, kitanas/knives, and small figurines.
The highlight of the museum is on the 1st floor , between the byobu (lacquer screen) and behind the wall is a ZEN garden. There is a bench and you will look at a minimalist modern garden w/ water running, some stones, and bamboo trees. Very very chic, contemporary, and soothing.
Donations are encouraged (and honestly no one badgered us into donating)...my lame ass folded a bill into a heart and dropped it in...next time, i'm going to drop a crane as well!
Oh yea, check out the fountain on the outside..its super impressive. -

With a museum being free you really can't complain. Their works are nicely arranged and displayed, the information desk chick is kinda hot, the museum itself is in a convenient location close to the DMA and the Nasher Sculpture Center so you can hit up all those joints in one day if your feet are willing.
I'm thinking that Asian people came up with the "reach around" maneuver. There was a statue with a dude doing it and the sculpture was pretty old. Take a look for yourself!Listed in: High Five Fun Time!, Artsy Fartsy

One of the saving graces of our 4 day Dallas excursion.
Highlights included:
FREE admission!
The 'Inorganic Urban Creature' exhibit
The various beautiful Chinese snuff bottles carved from nephrite
The impressive Indian and Nepalese reliefs and artifacts
The soothing, ambient music
The hanging origami in the walkway (as S R pointed out)
The 4 season nephrite/jade panels given to the Chinese emperor from the Russian Tsar
and the various Edo period artwork
one minute minor lowlight: the cold. maybe the lower temperature helps preserve the artifacts, paintings and murals, but what do i know. -

A great little gem!
Don't let the size fool you. This is a "full service" museum offering a lovely postmodern open glass and stone space that houses a permanent rotating collection, private collections, touring exhibitions, events, lectures, and classes. Zen meditation, yoga, and thai chi are practiced here by experts and beginners alike. While the museum tends to concentrate mostly on the art and culture of eastern Asia, the entire continent is represented.
My only wish is that this wonderful downtown spot were bigger.
The website is easy to use and beautiful: http://www.crowcollect.... -

You can't beat free, and what you get for that price is far more than you'd expect. The pieces are beautiful and in wonderful condition, ranging from small to quite large, each with a plaque to explain it and its historical significance.
It is not large, though, so don't expect to plan your day around it. You'll likely spend about an hour or so there, depending on how into the art you are. It is a wonderful place though and well worth a visit. -

Great place to hang out.
You won't be here all day, so plan to museum "hop" for the other nearby places.
Of course, free adminssion ROCKS and I honestly did not "truly" appreciate some of the work, until the 3rd and 4th time there. -

I guess for lack of better wording... The docents are very friendly and helpful. I saw several students working on projects and the staff were helping and answering questions. The exhibit is step up on two levels and three rooms. you walk in and take an elevator to the next level and a walk way across to the last room (my fave). The exhibit has several artifacts and some with stories and explanations.

If you have not been to the Crow Center to see the great Asian art, you are missing one of the treasures of Dallas. They also bring Tibetan monks every year to create a sand mandala, which is truly amazing. I was lucky enough to attend their performance of Sacred Music, Sacred Dance this year. Wonderful!

I love free admission museums and this happens to be one that's impressive. The collection is pretty large, featuring all asian countries such as Korea, China, India, Indonesia, Phillipines. The architecture of the museum is gorgeous, spacious, and peaceful too. Oh, and check out the walkway filled with hanging origami paper cranes made from all sorts of brilliant colors/flower patterns.

Wow, I was totally blown away by the collection here. IT'S HUGE! I haven't seen many Asian collection that do such a good mix of contemporary as well as more "historical" art. And free is always nice.
