Hooray! Finally a barber shop experience for the sorority of short haired ladies!
I first saw Michael's posting on Salonapprentice for models to come let him try out new things for free, but I went in for a regular cut at the low low student price of $35. Which, considering the area, is freakin crazy affordable. He does the student discount, which is nice, and more importantly he rocked my hair.
My issue with the more mainstream salon experience is that my hair is 3 inches long, so I have to get it cut like every six weeks. Which is fiscally not possible at $80 a pop, not to mention that with all the shampooing and the stylists effing around being afraid to cut my hair too short it takes like an hour and a half. But at CfG I was in and out in under an hour. And I thought Michael was pretty cool, despite some of that famous awkwardness.
Michael saved my life!
I've got a terrible hair cut and the next day I went to Crops for Girls and Michael gave me a great hair cut :-)
He has some albums with lots and lots of hair cuts so you can have an idea of all different short hair styles.
If you have short hair or want to get one, I definitely recommend Crops for Girls.
i rarely have a good haircut. its gotten so that i have white knuckled panic attacks while sitting in the salon chair, usually. i have very asian thick straight hair - id expect someone to know how to cut it by now. but alas, no. hate hate hate... in fact, i went to hair metal in williamsburg and had a stylist go at my hair with a razor, ALL OVER. (she never touched the scissors, wtf!?!)
anyway, after crying. after hearing about this establishment from a GUY friend, and then after reading other happy YELP reviews, i booked it over to CROPS FOR GIRLS and have had the BEST haircut experience EVER. Michael not only knows what he's doing but truly cares about what he is creating. He cut my hair with scissors -- all TYPES of scissors. Scissors to trim length, smaller scissors to trim smaller sides, scissors with teeth (?) to thin out fat sides. and NEVER ONCE DID HE TOUCH A RAZOR! I will never get my hair cropped anywhere else, ever again. seriously. ever again. thank god for michael. thank god im a girl!!
and at $35-45/cut THE EXPERIENCE IS A STEAL!
my god, i love my hair.
Great place for a cutting edge haircut! My hair had been butchered earlier in the weekend by an amateur stylist and I did not want to go back there, and since it was short I decided to go shorter. I remembered passing this place a week before so I made an appointment that day, it was so easy.
Michael was a bit shy, but I could tell he had a passion for short hair because of all the books he made with magazine cut-outs of cute styles. I've never had so many choices for short hair before! We had a short discussion and he went to town putting so many layers and taking his time. It turned out to be something I don't think I would have specifically asked for, but I LOVE it! It frames my face so well, I don't think I could trust short hair to anyone else from now on!
i got a haircut.
i know that it's not the most revolutionary declaration of late, but it's short.
really short. think karen o. from the yeah yeah yeahs. or winnona ryder in "reality bites."
but michael was awesome and did a great job.
and you know what? i am rocking this hair!
I answered Michael's ad on Craigslist. He was offering free haircuts to volunteers who would let him just do his thing, try out different techniques for short hair. I thought, why not, and went in. I didn't realize that when he said short, he meant VERY short. Like pixie short. But once I was in that chair, I fought the fear and gave him the go-ahead. He gave me a GREAT cut, spent so much time painstakingly grooming my very fine hair, giving it volume, getting rid of heavy spots, and making sure it framed my face properly, cowlicks and all. He's shy and doesn't talk your ear off, and that's okay in my book.
After leaving, it took a couple days to get used to the lack of hair, but I've only gotten rave reviews and compliments. I feel hair liberated. I'm so glad I went, and I will continue to go back.
Note: he does not recommend pixie cuts for fat girls.
I love getting my hair cut here. Michael is very talented. However, I have to warn those of you who look over 35-40, you may not be served. I was present when a woman who looked to be around 50 came in and was told she isn't a GIRL. So it seems he doesn't just dislike men, he also won't have anything to do with anyone who isn't a girl. That said, if you ARE a girl, go here - you're bound to get something that fits you. I'm just worried I'll have to find another hair dresser when I turn 35...
I first found this place because I wanted to donate my 14 or so inches of hair to Locks of Love, and Michael will give you a free cut if you donate. But I couldn't let him give me a free cut! He charges too little for his work, compared to the rest of New York -- which is fine, I love a reasonably priced, skilled haircut. But I think it's important to support someone who does their work because they like doing it.
I have to disagree with Sara C's review. I came in having had long hair all my life and wanted a sexy femme short cut. After accosting Michael with pictures of Gillian Anderson and a review of all the hairstyles I liked, he politely told me, "Actually, I was thinking of something totally different." You see, I am cursed with straight fine hair and have always dreamed of funky styles with the same result -- my hair won't stand, or do flips, or curve, or anything else, it just chills by the side of the my head; so I can have short straight hair, or long. I opted for the short and told Michael to do what he thought was best, and surprise, I ended up happier with the results than I've ever been. My hair feels - dare I say - lively. And it's cute, and very femme. And if you look on his website, he has a portfolio full of femme haircuts.
As for Michael, he's both polite and straightforward, seems kind and thoughtful, and is definitely talented.
I should preface this stinker of a review with the fact that I only went there once, quite a few years ago now (maybe 3-4 years?). I think they were relatively new, then, too. So maybe they've come a long way, I don't know.
But I can pretty much sum up my experience at Crops for Girls this way: They should change the name to "Crops for Gym Teachers".
I'm a lesbian. Don't get me wrong, when I say someone's hair looks like she got it done by the LPGA staff stylist, it's not homophobic. It's aesthetic. Just because you're a woman who loves women doesn't mean your style icon has to be Gertrude Stein.
I went in with old photos of Twiggy and Mia Farrow from the 60's. I came out looking butcher than butch. I'd want serious reassurances (including photographic evidence) before ever going back there.
I'm not a big fan of this place.
A haircut is a very intimate interaction. Someone is directly affecting your physical appearance with two blades that have been connected to form scissors. Michael is a very awkward person to have such an intimate encounter with.
I've gotten my hair cut here twice. The first time I went from shoulder length to short/spiky. The second time was a trim. Michael lacks a lot of creativity, and I have to agree with the Yamsie C. He seems to have only a handful of haircuts in his repertoire, so don't expect your haircut to be very original. While I was pleased with my cut both times, I wasn't thrilled and I wasn't incredibly impressed.
I've visited this place three times, twice of which I actually had my hair cut by him, and I have to admit, Michael knows his hair. Every snip of his scissor is neat and precise. One can tell he truly loves his job. His socializing skills however, pale in comparison. The one time I walked out of his salon without letting him touch my hair was when he kicked my boyfriend out. Not that my boyfriend was doing much besides BREATHING..
Word to the ladies, come by yourself or with a female friend. He didn't seem to have any problems with the woman waiting on his couch. There's probably a good reason why he specializes in female and ONLY female cuts. I suspect he has an aversion for men.
There is one thing I can't understand though. Why does it seem that even after looking through his books and pointing out two different haircuts to him during my other two visits, that I walked out of his salon with practically the same haircut each time? I have a feeling he has three signature haircuts, one for each length he offers: mid-length, short, and supershort. Frankly, I don't think he paid much attention to the pictures I showed him. Once a length is selected, he'll start cutting right away. In my case, I chose pics from supershort and I ended up with a crewcut each time. Plus it seems like his first snip purposely takes away too much, and its always from the top of the head so you can't go backwards. I personally don't care because I'm used to short hair but if you treasure your hair length and are looking for just a trim, I suggest you look elsewhere. You'll probably end up crying.
I go to Crops for Girls with my girlfriend about once a month. We have recommended Michael and his wonderfully affordable salon to dozens of friends, all now happy customers. You will catch Michael listening to his favorite band, The Grateful Dead. First he will be shy and awkward and though he will remain awkward the rest of the time eventually he will get over his shyness and start talking to you. He is very pleasant and he does like to talk about Bob Weir, or the recent beauty convention he attended. He has very steady hands and a knack for short haircuts. He has been specializing in short haircuts for women for almost 20 years. He does cut all sort of hair, though, if you ask him. I have very straight hair, so any kind of mistake shows easily, and he has always done a flawless job. My girlfriend has curly hair and he manages to give her a great haircut every time, which, I must say, is a big feat! A haircut right now will cost you $30 with a student ID and it is well worth it!
