Radio advertising does work! My work phone had been lost (separate story), and a new one would take x number of days to arrive (where x is dependent on work, Cingular, and UPS ordering/shipping and delivering).
Cricket advertise heavily about "no contracts, free long distance, free local calls".
It's all true--I walked in, and 15 minutes later, I walked out with my "temporary phone".
The drawbacks: the phones are pretty subpar. My Motorola flip phone is chintzy, and I hate the software on it.
Though Austin gets good coverage, if you travel often, check the Coverage map first. Each call while you're in an "out of area" location costs per minute. DFW airport, for instance, isn't covered.
I'm on to a better phone, and didn't renew this month, but I'll keep my Cricket as an emergency backup. -

Great concept, but bad customer service and depressing corporate stores. If you need unlimited daytime minutes, this is the (only) way to go.
But beware the cheap quality of their expensive phones ($100-$250)and really subpar service from even their own stores (they always hang up on you after four rings if you try to call) This is how they can offer unlimited minutes.
The Cricket manager here in Austin also promised a $25 plan until the end of the month and now it is already $30-$35 a couple of days later. I'm just sure they can do better than this. -

WTF has happened to customer service?I was on hold and even transferred to shipping yesterday?!? Paid my bill on the 5th which they do show payment of ....so why is my phone shut off? No one can tell me, been told I have a $25 past due balance. So what is the $25 for you ask and why was that not paid? Gee, I have no idea, funny I just paid the total due that the automated system gave me. The only answer they can give is that they don't know why the past due was not given to me when I paid and BEST PART $10 of the $25 balance is a reinstatement fee!!!!!! LMAO! A lady in the Philippines even asked me to give her my credit card # over the phone....really!!? So I have had cricket for 7 of the last 10 years and in the last 6 months it has gone down the crapper. 4 of the last 6 months I have sworn I was done, do not..... I repeat do not get cricket service. My phone is currently disconnected and they have $75.86 of my money and shut off my phone over a mysterious $14.94 now want 24.94 to turn it back on. Go F8ck yourself cricket and you can shove my POS $300 worthless Motorola evoke up your a**. :)
