Went to Crew last night for a beer.. and I never felt so discriminated towards. Yes, I know I'm at a gay bar and I'm a female, but I still don't think I deserve waiting 20 minutes at the bar for a beer, while other guys were quickly served. I swear one bartender passed by us 3 times before he pretended to look surprised as my bf and I were glaring at him for service!
Go to BIG CHICKS!!!! They are sweet and nice no matter your sexual orientation! Plus is signficantly cheaper!

It's the prettiest sports bar I've ever been in - the paneling and display cases make it almost seem European. The handful of times I've been here the crowd seemed mostly populated by Uptown locals - except during the Gay Games of course...
The first time I came to Crew, shortly after they opened, my reaction was, "This place is kind of pricey." Not what you'd expect from a gay sports bar. Though it's hard to say what you would expect from a gay sports bar.
On a recent visit, it seemed less pricey, but that could be because Blue Moon was on special for $3.50. My specialty martini (Pairs Skating = pear martini = too sweet and unctuous), on the other hand, was 10 bucks. Ouch! Double ouch because although beer prices were listed on the menu, martini prices were not.
Food is better than your average bar food, unless you're in this neighborhood. Fat Cat, T's, and Tweet serve a similar crowd, and all serve food as good as Crew. Service is dicey. It can be slow -- actually, I've never known it not to be slow -- and quite frankly, the cuter you are, the better service you get. This is the dirty secret of too many gay establishments, and as a big 'mo, I can call them out on it.
Perhaps the oddest thing about Crew is that it houses a collection of the most humorless queers in the city. Perhaps it's because this is a sports bar, and thus caters to a different breed of queer than I am used to. And granted, I am an acquired taste. But everything I have said to anyone here -- patron or staff -- has been greeted with a blank stare or barely disguised disgust. As a result, I never come here alone. Your experience, of course, may differ.

I love Crew but so does everyone else apparently! I went to Crew right when they opened as I had read about them in a Nightspot's advertisement.
The staff, the food and ambiance is awesome. Unfortunately, I can never get in there as it is packed to the gills in the Summer! Well, it's packed all year long but the Summer forget about it! I do like the fact that they are impartial during the busy season. Note: Even if your friends are seated comfy inside your ass waits at the end of the line like everyone else which really is the fair way to handle the situation.
I am still waiting to hear if their other establishment is open and will definitely check that out based on the professionalism at Crew.
OK, time for an update. I have gone there 3 times for lunch the last month.. the good news, the food is pretty good, particularly the turkey burger.... the bad news.... IT TAKES A FREEKING HALF HOUR to get the lunch delivered to your table. I mean, come on, you are not that busy.. and it is Lunch, not Brunch... so generally I do not have all day to wait for a freeking burger... OK, got THAT out of my system

Where to go to watch the cubs game if you're in uptown and you wake up drunk at 12:00 noon? Crew. Nothing beats starting drinking bloody marys for brunch when you're still tipsy from the night before.
If the Cubs win they raffle off a $25.00 gift certificate to someone. I won, mostly because our server let us enter 5 times. Which I have to assume it not allowed. (For that reason I will not mention our servers name. It rhymes with Moe, Foe, Doe)
REALLY strong Bloody Marys. How strong? Had trouble stumbling home after the game. I love day drinking. Awesome staff, really cool other patrons. Get the Hobo platter.

Crew was my first gay bar in Chicago. It was also the place where I met my first gay friend from Chicago. Since then, I've been taking my friends (new and old) to grab a drink, chat, and just relax.
Crew has a great selection of beers. I'm not a big beer drinker (I'll take a martini any day). But, even I can't turn down the beers that they have there. They have one for everyone.
During the night the bar can quickly get crowded. Watch out if it is Bravo night! That place gets packed! However, when you realize that you can still hear yourself think and be able to talk to your friends, you know you're in a good place.

CREW takes the best of both worlds and combines them into a new but very welcome venue:
SPORTS BAR - lotsa nice tvs with sports on, beer and drink specials, good bar food, men (and women) hi-fiving and celebrating for their team
GAY BAR - welcomes everyone, discrimination definitely not welcome, done up to kick life up several notches, special attention to drinks, excellent attention to detail, men (and women) hi-fiving and celebrating for their team
CREW = SPORTS BAR + GAY BAR - welcomes everyone, discrimination definitely not welcome, lotsa nice tvs with sports on, really excellent bar food done up to kick life up several notches, special attention to beer and drink specials, excellent attention to detail, men (and women) hi-fiving and celebrating for their team
We went there on a Thursday night (darts night apparently), and it was the last night before our family friends left. Moderately crowded, parked RIGHT IN FRONT, we got a seat right away.
ATMOSPHERE - Nicely done, well lit, great tables, exceptionally clean. Most sports bars smell like dried beer or stale vomit. Not here. Also, a DJ that plays cool dance stuff (why does every single freaking sports bar only play bands that sound like Live or some other crappy generic 4 chord, easy level song on a bad Taiwanese copy of Guitar Hero?)!
DRINKS - Our waiter was great and he kept the drinks coming. A plethora of beer selections were available, as well as all the premium liquors and mixers.
FOOD - Man, this was the BOMB. Mini sandwiches of Memphis style pulled pork with slaw and ground sirloin (no ground chuck here, baby) came, along with a huge basket of wings and perfect onion rings. The mini-corndog basket (yes, mini corndogs that you can eat and not be sick after one) were light, but the dog was a little bland. Still, if you need a grease fix, it fits the bill while fitting your diet. This was only a FEW of the items on this magnificently styled bar menu. My wife's family friends from Japan were like,"Is this how all sports bars are like in Chicago? This is ree-ree nice!"
CAVEATS - With the exception of "no h-phobes or discrimination allowed", there are none!
All in all, a fantastic place to go, and hopefully more inspired new venues will grow from it. Four snaps up!

went there last night since it was very close to where I live. They had a great outside patio and a good beer selection. The food was also pretty good (we loved the fried green beans). Give it a shot.
I started coming here with my roommate to watch Project Runway on Wednesday nights. It's always a pretty relaxed, fun, open atmosphere, with a predominance of gay men but a variety of ages and plenty of women interspersed. The cocktail prices are a little steep for me, so I usually stick to the beer special. The food is definitely bar food, but has been tasty in my experience. The Cajun fries are good, as are the mini burgers. The servers are always pretty attentive and seem as though they enjoy their jobs. Now that Project Runway has ended (the final episode saw Crew PACKED to the gills), they play Top Chef, which is also at 9:00 on Wednesdays. I've actually never gone on a non-Bravo TV night, so I can't vouch for the times that it actually functions as a sportsbar.
One of my absolute favorite bars in Chicago...and I'm a straight woman! A couple of friends and I were lured into this bar off the street a few years ago by patrons promising us "excellent food" and we fell in love with the place over a deadly concoction they brew up there called a "beergarita" (more margarita than beer, but will knock you on your ass). Since then I've turned many a person onto the beergaritas and we make entire nights out of drinking pitchers of them. We usually have trouble walking by the end of the night.
The food really is better than your average bar food, with the Cobb Salad being a favorite of mine. The late night menu (after 10) is pretty decent as well, with the nachos being another favorite. The plate is huge enough to split with someone else and we always seem to finish it.
Despite the fact that it's a gay sports bar, everyone seems very welcome here no matter what sex or sexual orientation you are. I've watched the World Series here, been to sex worker parties, and watched a friend of mine compete in the jock strap contest twice. The jukebox rocks, the bathrooms are clean, the waitstaff is friendly. Always a good time.
Try the beergaritas.
I love this place! I came last night, on a Tuesday night, with a friend after a softball game, and it was great. There were plenty of people there, but we were able to get a table right away. Their food is much better than average, and I like how they have a plethora of food choices. I ended up having he sinfully good Fried Chicken Sandwich.
They have plenty of TVs (I'd say 12-15 or so) tuned to any and every game you could want. Tuesday nights are apparently karaoke night, so that was highly entertaining to watch. I spared everyone in the bar and decided against partaking in that.
Good food + good service = definitely returning!
If I hadn't been told Crew was a gay bar I never would have known, ok, well, that's a lie, but regardless, this straight guy loves this place!
I have never left Crew disappointed with a meal. The fried chicken sandwiches with choice of sauce (go with the sassy) are absolutely artery-cloggingly perfect, and pairing them w/ garlic fries makes a meal straight from heaven (and soon to the operating table).
It's a great place to watch whatever (voted best sports bar in the city), but I've gone to their Oscar watching parties twice now, and apparently they do regular screenings of certain shows as well. The crowd has always been under control, and almost more restaurant-like rather than bar-like when I've been there, with a healthy mix of genders, orientations, and ages.
The only real complaint I have is the service, it is definitely lackluster, and you can end up waiting for quite some time to order or to get your bill.

Alright, in Texas there's no such thing as "gay sports bar" and then I move here and there's a ton of them!? In heaven!! This one I wasn't impressed with. It seemed impersonal. Came in to watch a Cubs game after hearing so much about the place and it's empty? Weird...it has its quirks though! The food was eh...bar fare once again...the bartender was not the nicest cookie in the bunch - but I'll more than likely be back and hopefully will have a better experience!

This place surprised us. Solid beer selection and good, though primarily unhealthy food. But you don't go to a bar for health food. Tator tot casserole....yum. The only thing I could complain about is the music videos blaring from the tvs. But again, it's a bar.

Out of the 1000s of gay sports bars in Chicago, Crew has to be my favorite. I am absolutely obsessed with the food. It is...hands down...the best bar food in Chicago. They have a stellar beer selection, as well. The staff is awesome, and Man the Mic karaoke is hysterical. I would recommend a beer and food here to anyone!

Thank god I wasn't driving the night...or should I say afternoon...yes I was drinking at 3:15 pm (occupational perk), that I went to Crew. I walked in saw my friends, and bellied up to the bar. The bartender was super fun and talkative. He made us feel right at home and even tolerated all our questions about how the different flavored martinits taste and what's in all of them. He even gave us free shot tastings of some of them. Score! Needless to say, many shots and drinks later, I was feeling pretty good, so unfortunately I can't comment on the decor. It's a typical gay sports bar, big screen tvs, with a mixture of sports on them and the E! Channel. The tv channel selection makes everyone happy. The nachos were good...but as stated above...can't really remember details. Anyway, you should definitely go to Crew, it's a fun relaxed spot.

I haven't had the food there but the beer selection is pretty good. I think that they could probably use a few more on draft, but really a lot places could and the bottles they have make up for it. It's funny to think that the places works as a gay bar and a sports bar but it does work. ESPN and Goltv playing at all times as well as karaoke night with many people practicing for the 'Gay Idol' semi-finals. The waitstaff is very, very good they're friendly and attentive I don't think any of us had to wait more than 2 minutes to get another round-except when the bartender went up to sing 'A Lap Dance is so much better when the Stripper is Crying.' By far the CLEANEST bathroom of any bar I've been, and the gay/sports theme continues here with autographed pictures of Greg Louganis up on the door and the wall (aren't they worth something? I'd be worried about theft.) Three stars solid, and possibly more after I taste the food.

I came here the other night to cheer on my roommate as he auditioned for Gay Idol. Parking was a bit of pain, but once I parked I was welcomed with a friendly smile, given instructions for the contest, and let on in. The place was pretty full with men and women, contestants and their friends, all imbibing on liquid refreshments and/or liquid courage for the contest. This is a sports bar so you have the usual large amounts of TVs with various sports on, this is also a gay bar so you have a DJ spinning some good music, good drink specials and a lot of gay men. I found my friends and considering I just came from work, I was pretty hungry. I sipped on my 22 oz Sapporo as I perused the menu. By the way, their beer menu and martini list was larger than I thought which was a pleasant surprised. I wasn't craving anything special, but the menu was fairly impressive and a lot looked good. I decided to be boring and go for the chicken sandwich with cheese and jalapenos and got a side of mac and cheese. The noodles in the mac and cheese was a little over cooked, but the chicken was cooked just right, moist but a little crispy charred on the outside. The service was a little slow, I think the crowd was the main reason for that, however it was still really friendly. My roommate unfortunately did not make it on to the next round despite a really spot on performance. However that won't deter me from coming back here again... now if only those two redhead girls will be there again....

I always have a good time here. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming (everyone feels welcome here--gay, bi, straight, male, female, anything else) , and the waiters and bartenders are flirty. Lots of TV screens, but if you come late at night they're usually showing Scissor Sisters or Goldfrapp videos, or the E! channel. The crowd is diverse and attractive, and refreshingly free of the drunken idiots that populate most of Chicago's other sport-and-booze-a-toriums.
Especially fun after watching Mick Napier pour ketchup all over his head at the Annoyance Theater next door.

Seriously...gay or straight this place is pretty excellent. I live around the corner and I think this bar made the neighborhood. Lawrence and Broadway, before all the new bars and restaurants came in, was pretty desolate a couple years ago. Of course the Green Mill has always been alive and well, but Crew offered this location some vibrancy! In the summer the patio is always packed! The bar itself is very nice....its the prettiest damn sports bar you ever did see. The staff is very friendly and it always has a good crowd!

I'm definitely short selling Crew Bar and Grill. It has plenty of appeal from the street and their website. The review here are relatively solid, but my Crew experience has left me empty.
The good news is that there was no wait on Saturday night at 8PM. The week prior, the wait was about 25 minutes. We were seated right away in a table adjacent to the main bar. This area is the best part of the indoor seating as it's right across from the 3 televisions that are high definition. There are 10-15 other TVs around the joint, but they are not HD. This may not be a real issue for many, but the competition is putting out all high def sets now.
There is plenty of good beers to select from, but the accompanied food was lackluster. The jack corn quesadillas were the best item we ordered. They had good flavor and they were cooked just right to hold them together. They were served on a wheat tortilla, so I guess that's an attempt to make them a little more healthy. The twisted BLT was awful. There was hardly any bacon on the sandwich and the bread was so overpowering. Texas toast is great, but the insides sell the sandwich. The burger was mediocre. It wasn't cooked to medium as I ordered and the edges were a little crispy. The standard selection of toppings, red onion, tomato, lettuce, bread and butter pickles, were lacking. Ask for more onion as there was only two rings of onion included.
Crew is a pretty good bar and grill if you're local, but I wouldn't recommend anyone travel out of their way. Give Crew a shot though. You might like it.

This is an interesting place in my mind. All of my experiences have been enjoyable, sometimes the service is a bit slow but its also been pretty busy when have been there.
Its a nice place to enjoy burger, socialize, and hang out. However be careful, sometimes the prices can jump off the bill and slap you in the face.
I got a little suprise my last visit, burgers for 2, and 2 Margarita's each. The margaritas were made and charged as doubles, which was not requested. The server stated thats how they come. Well that hamburger lunch was nearly $100!
Their prices are a bit higher than the bars in boystown, and the drinks are not any stronger.
Price does not deter me much from these places, I just know to look at prices before I order.
Decent place!

Crew shows Project Runway on Wednesday nights. Unless they decide not to at the last minute because the Fiesta bowl is on. I can understand a sports bar choosing sports over a show on Bravo, but they foolishly left the "Project Runway Wednesday nights" signs up on this occasion and made no verbal mention of it not being shown when we came in. We would not have been there otherwise. Even our very cool and nice server was surprised and disappointed!
The problem was with the manager, who said he was following the owner's orders, even though there were several parties who expressed that they'd prefer to watch Project Runway. He also claimed that he had no power to give us any kind of compensation for our disappointment after we had spent (too much) money on beer and mediocre food, which we had gotten earlier in order to secure a table to watch the show. Many in our party, including me, had worked in food service and thought that was real bs. The manager on duty can't cut 10% off a bill? Then who can? Certainly he could comp at least a pitcher of beer. It wouldn't have been much money-wise, but it would have been a gesture of goodwill and apology that we were disappointed. He basically blamed us for not asking when we got there if it was being shown. Um, dude, the signs were up.
I will not be returning to Crew.
This place gets more than one star only because our server was kind and had on a very nice Dolly Parton shirt.

For a straight man I find myself at a lot of gay bars.
Crew is your average gay themed sports bar. The staff always have been helpful but the food is unmemorable and a tad on the pricey side.
The sports part seems to be more a part of the decor than the prime draw here. There is a variety of large screen lcd's around but only a few of them are in HD nor do they stand out for your attention.
They do a a very popular karaoke night. I was lucky enough to win a raffle here once. Originally the prize was some gay erotica, which I swapped for a Bears keychain instead.

It's not difficult to see why this bar was voted the best sports bar. It is a very laid back place where you can go to catch a game or just hang out with friends.
The food is good, nothing too spectacular, but good bar food. The bartenders have always been extremely friendly. The servers are hit of miss depending on their attitude. I've had really great servers and a couple that needed to check their attitudes at the door.
Overall, it's a nice place. But I'm a sucker for any place that has a Hawkeye flag hanging!

What a waste of a Sunday brunch. I was pretty excited to try this place out after hearing some really good reviews from friends, but was thoroughly disappointed almost immediately after we sat down.
The first deal breaker was the wait staff. Our server was just "someplace else" like HE was the one with the bad hangover. It took literally 10 minutes to get bloody marys out to the table (forget trying to order water, two drinks was just too much for him to handle) which were brought over to us one.by.one. Painstakingly slow. He took our order but then had to run back to the table a couple of different times as he "forgot" about certain things, like how they couldn't punch in fries as a side at brunch until noon rolled around (or something like that) which was fine...understandable, but what was not was how he just "forgot" to punch in an entire meal for my friend. He offered to comp it which was very nice, but my friend instead just said to comp one of our meals; my friend was less than interested in eating after he saw what came out for us!
Strike 2- I ordered the trainer's choice (egg whites with onions and peppers and a breakfast veggie patty) that came out literally ice cold. Seriously, is it that hard to stick the meal under a heat lamp? I had a couple of bites of it and then just decided I was finished. I am not one to send food back if its not to my liking, so I ordered a beer to fill me up.
Strike 3- After a horrendous meal (the manager I assume came over to our table to apologize and talk with us) with TWO comped meals, the server still had the nerve to charge me 50 cents for two blue cheese-stuffed olives. Really? Did he not realize that the olives and beer turned out to be my meal?
The only reason I even am giving it a star is because they served a very good nutmeg beer.

This is a fun place to go and watch sports and have some food and drinks. The service staff that I've had is always friendly and willing to get what you want in a timely fashion. I really enjoy the fact that it's not like all the typical gay bars in boystown (then again it's not really in boystown). It's not all about clubbing and hooking up though I'm sure there's plenty of that happening it's not as in your face about it. Good atmosphere decent food, good service I go back with my friends that live up in the area on a somewhat regular basis and will continue to go when I'm up in the area.
The one down side I've found is that the dj's are a bit hit or miss, last night was just too much Madonna.... I know she's huge in the gay world but too much of a good thing isn't...

My friends and I ended up here randomly last night after getting to Green Mill too late to get in. I am happy it worked out that way because we had a GREAT time hanging out, watching whatever insanely funny channel they had on their tvs (some odd mix of the best of the 80s-early 90's music videos, random SNL clips, and other fun stuff). We picked up on it being a gay bar after a little while, but as other reviewers have noted, you don't really expect the sports bar/ gay bar mix! But once I saw the bartenders T-Shirt (a tight little shirt that said "I Love Tightends" kind of made things click :) hey I agree but I think he and I would mean that phrase in different ways!)
We had no trouble getting a table since there were no sporting events going on and it was around 10:30 on an extremely icy Saturday night. We had thought about trying to go back over to Green Mill but were then seduced by some yummy cheese fries (I'll admit not my favorite kind of cheese, but still pretty tasty!). We ended up being kind of sad to leave when it was shutting down- the whole atmosphere , especially the music, really just worked for a group of 20-something girls!
Not something I would go this far out of my way for in general, but if you are in the area, check it out! Of course I will always remember this place fondly as being part of the evening we got a ride home in a police car.... ;) (ok that story is not in any way juicy, just funny)

I ate here for lunch and found this place to be a good find. We sat outside in a little patio area that overlooks Broadway, entertained by the pedestrians. Crew is simply excellent. I know of no more desirable place to watch a football game in the city; the bartenders are friendly (and flirty), the food is of excellent quality (though a little pricey), and the beer list extensive.
The bar itself is laid out fairly well; big screen HDTVs above the bar and multiple more televisions scattered about; there's always one within your line-of-sight. It does get quite busy on Sun. afternoons, especially when the Bears are playing, but the crowd is pleasant and friendly and won't steal your seat when you go to the restroom. If you want a seat at the bar, though, be wise and show up early.
It is of course a gay bar and attracts a strongly gay clientele; so if you're put off by that, maybe one of the faux-Irish "pubs" in Lincoln Park might be a better fit for you.

Good lunch deals--smaller portions, smaller prices. Good mini-burgers, too. Everything was very good, except for the barbecue sauce on the mini-pulled pork, so that kind of sucked. But the salads are nice and fresh, the loaded fries are delish, and the mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy and good. I'd absolutely go back, but most likely for lunch again.
Hands down, my favorite of all the gay bars in Chicago.
There is absolutely no attitude by any (well most) of the staff. The food is average, but I dont go there for the food. Their beer list is astounding. If you a beer fan, try out their "Passport": Drink all the beers on the list (60-70 different beers), get your picture on the wall, and an extra 4 oz's of draft beer anytime you order a draft, plus the personal satisfaction of trying new things :)
