Review Highlights
First off, a disclaimer: I dropped in my business card and got a free crepe, so I'm biased.
That being said, the thought of savory crepes never appealed to me, I've even been to Paris 3 times and never tried one. But, someone said I should try this place, and I now see the error of my ways, there things are DELICIOUS!
I particularly recommend the chicken crepe which has this crack-like Bechamel sauce that's pretty much pure buttery yum-ness. If you're ever around 2nd and Howard, check them out.
A new addition to FiDi street food that makes you say "OOh La La!" The crêpe is made from buckwheat so it is hearty like a galette. It's also folded into a cone so it's more conducive to eating while standing up as opposed to the traditional knife and fork half moon. I prefer the half moon shape, but appreciated the cone as a good grab-n-go compromise. The filling options aren't terribly innovative, but as one of the only crêpe stands around, I don't think they need to get into the business of bulgogi and kimchi filled crêpes like numerous taco joints have started to do in order to have a competitive edge.
Chicken Crêpe: So much for light and wimpy crêpes! This is a power crêpe filled with chicken, cheese, mushroom, fresh spinach and fresh tomatoes. It almost feels too healthy for street food. Thank goodness the chicken and mushrooms are smothered in buttery béchamel else I might be tempted to start doing yoga.
Chocolate & Strawberries Crêpe: Melted scharffen berger chocolate sauce with fresh strawberries... so nice to see this option compared to many crêpe places that get nutella-centric and leave out the chocolate. The crispy top portion and softer bottom portion made a great texture contrast as I ate my dessert first.
Yay finally a crepe stand in the FiDi! (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) It's located right next to a parking lot between 1st and New Montgomery on Howard. The lady that worked there was really friendly and our food came out in under 10 minutes! The boy and I choose 2 crepes to try:
cheese mushroom and spinach ($6.50*)
cheese turkey and egg ($6.95*)
*prices were raised from $6 and $6.50
(http://www.yelp.com/bi...)
The crepes were soft, freshly made, and wrapped in foil on a paper tray. There was a hint of sweetness in the buckwheat batter and it tasted healthy and amazing! The sauteed mushrooms with onions and fresh spinach one was to die for...the melted cheese brought everything together. It was a little messy with the dripping sauce from the mushrooms but so worth it. I sampled the turkey one too and it tasted like breakfast...yum!
Filled me up too but not overly so. Cash only. Will make the trek here again soon!
I work in the Financial District and make the walk to St Germain about twice a week. They are fantastic!! I always get a sweet and a savory and have never been disappointed. Besides great, made to order food, you are greeted by the sweetest woman. No sure if she is the owner or not, but my guess is she must be. I can't imagine someone being so freindly without having a vested interest in return clients. Return I do!
Do yourself a favor and go grab a crepe (or two, like I do. Current fave the ratatouille w/goat cheese and a Rasperry for dessert). Amazing!!
A different kind of crepe. Well at least in my limited crepe experience. They are great if you are on the run and it was the first crepe I ever ate without utensils. I certainly liked the many options offered of savory and sweet. So many options that it actually took me a little bit of time to decide.
The service was fast and friendly. Pretty typical for a truck. All in all though, I'm not sure if I would go out of my way to come here but since I work in the neighborhood I will definitely return.
Like many others have noted, this is a small cart and the lines can get really long. I totally recommend getting here before noon unless you really enjoy standing around industrial block of Howard street.
I didn't time my order (we ordered around 12:15 and ate sometime between 12:30-12:40). A large group of 6 ordered right after us and they were still there after we got our crepes, walked down a block to a park, ate them and then passed the cart again on our way back to the office. I don't know about you but I feel like that's a long time. I felt pretty bad for them.
My other advice is that if you're hungry you should order one of the crepes with meat. Hubby got the cheese/spinach/mushroom and he was still feeling peckish afterwards. I got the chicken for only $1 more and I couldn't finish mine.
The crepes themselves were pretty good. I like how they use actual buckwheat flour like proper French galettes. The ingredients were fresh but not overwhelming (like that sad excuse for a creperie - Crepevine).
I was happy I tried this place but since hubby makes pretty good galettes at home I'm not sure how often I'll be stopping by.
Yum yum yum! My office is about half a block from this wonderful crepe stand, and I eat there a couple of days a week. Their buckwheat crepes are light and crispy (not spongy or doughy, which drives me nuts.) and the fillings are super fresh. Creperie Saint Germain offers a variety of sweet and savory crepes - my staple is a crepe stuffed with baby spinach, mushrooms, turkey, and gooey cheese.
The woman who runs the counter is unbelievably nice.
It's hard to tell if I love them so much because they're so convenient, or because the ingredient combos they offer are what I generally crave, or because the crepes are so damned tasty. It's probably a combo of all three.
My only complaint is that I almost never have cash (Saint Germain is cash-only) so I often have to wander past the stand, find an ATM, and wander back. You'd think I'd have learned by now.
I made my first visit to Creperie Saint Germain last night and it knocked my socks off. I spend 10 weeks in France ever year and crepes are one of my main staple foods when I'm there. The crepe I had last night at the Creperie Saint Germain was better than any crepes I've had in Paris (and better than the crepes I've had in Brittany, where the French crepe was born).
I am a fan of the savory crepe, and last night I had my first crepe at CSG--with ground beef, generous avocado, sour cream, fresh tomatoes (it was their daily special). It was just perfect. I shared it with my friends and we were all blown away! Prior to visiting CSG, my fave crepe place had been the crepevine. I like the crepevine, but the crepes at CSG were better--not as heavy. The crepe itself is like a fresh French crepe, but the fillings are generous, fresh, and all round it was just the perfect crepe.
I went at about 12:30 at night, there was no line, and Zee made the crepe in under 5 minutes. She is a great sales person and superfriendly. I guess they are soon opening 2 more locations. Totally the ideal food when you are leaving the bar and have the late-night munchies.
I'm normally disappointed by crepes. Crepevine, crepe place on Haight, Melt...all leave me underwhelmed and with a dry sticky feeling on the top of my mouth. WTF is that about?
Creperie Saint Germain on the other hand, now they know how to make a damn good crepe! I had the Mediterranean yesterday and it was GREAT. Avocado, feta, fresh tomato and other vegetables, pepper, some oil and vinegar I think. It was delicious. I wish my friend JL would have informed me that chicken was an option (or that I read the menu more carefully) because I would have thrown that into the mix.
Do yourself a lunch or dessert favor (the sweet ones are awesome as well) and come here! They are open til 7. Heck yeah!
came across this place on my way to the bank. decided after i made my deposit i'd come back to try a crepe. with only six bucks in my pocket, i was only able to afford one crepe on the menu, which is a bit much if you ask me, it's a crepe. especially if you're serving the crepes outside in a parking lot from a truck window.
as for the crepe i could order, it was a basic cheese and egg crepe. mediocre at best. maybe all the good reviews are from the crepes with more filling to them, but it was just cheese and egg wrapped in a TOO THICK crepe. i could only finish half of the crepe before i had to compost it. it was unable to stomach it. there was no flavor to the crepe, it really tasted like a plain flat waffle. don't get me wrong, i love waffles, with blueberries and syrup on top.
The crepes are delicious and the service is top notch! So why only 4 stars instead of 5? Word has clearly spread around the neighborhood about how good they are and they've become a bit of a victim of their own success. It's a cart so they have limited space, which means only two griddles for crepes and that means sometimes (not all the time) you can have a bit of a wait. But when that happens they offer you a free drink (today it was fresh lemonade!) while you're waiting.
If Yelp had a 4.5 star rating I'd give them that. I go there at least once/week so obviously their food is worth the wait.
I'm not going to go so far to say my dessert crepe (bananas, honey and cinnamon) I had right before falling asleep was as good as the Ferry Corsten show that induced my ravenous hunger, but it's culinarily (sp?) close. Delicious, especially with the buckwheat batter. Were the price a bit cheaper than $6, I'd absolutely be awarding a fifth star.

Update:
Went at 12:30 today. There were about 10 people in front of us. This trip took a lot longer than expected. Many mistakes were made before us.
Swapped chicken for turkey for one of our crepes. They need to know how to handle volume/peak times better.
The double eggs, double turkey and extra cheese crepe was okay. Not as enthused as I was the first time around, but still good.

"Boy, it's been a nong time since dem days with da gang. Hi, I'm Buh'weet, amemba me? And I have made, pu you and ya eatin' pejure, some of my fa'vite crepes. It's all here at this un pectacular trailuh. Buh'weet is cookin'!..O-TAY!" (...cue for the moaning saxophone solo of the "Our Gang" theme)
If you haven't guessed by now, buckwheat crepes are the specialty here made on two griddles in a trailer. I think they should hire Eddie Murphy to do his Buckwheat imitation to generate more business for this mobile creperie next to Prana and Temple nightclub. After all, his career still hasn't recovered from "Pluto Nash" and "Norbit". Otherwise, it's fairly nondescript except for the smiling girl who serves the crepes from the window.
They offer an extensive menu of crepes, both sweet and savory. The sweet ones even come with a scoop of ice cream for a buck extra. Since it was lunchtime when I strolled by today, I went for one of the savories, the $6.95 Sauteed Chicken with Bechamel Sauce and Sauteed Mushroom. I thought it was pretty good, a bit salty and a tad paltry for the price. A nice side salad could have helped, but accessories are not an option here. Waffles are though and apparently a $5 bread bowl of tomato soup.
Oh, I'll come back because it is a convenient stop on Howard that doesn't require me to brave the urine-soaked sidewalk heading toward Second. An awning would have been worthwhile on a warm day like today... and maybe a couple of stools. Alas, they just got started, so I'm hoping business builds and they can make such extravagant investments. OK, OK, so I already used Eddie Murphy's Buckwheat character in my Ti Couz review, but hey, it works...
FOOD - 3 stars...a middling savory crepe...now I must try the sweet
AMBIANCE - 3 stars...it's a trailer...what ya expectin'?
SERVICE - 3.5 stars...O-TAY!!!
TOTAL - 3 stars...give it some time, mon ami
Delicious, affordable and the nicest and sweetest woman ever working there!
They're so friendly and even offered me a free drink because it took too long to cook it. It's about 200 feet from my office and their dessert crepes are TO DIE FOR!
Went there Friday for a breakfast crepe of spinach, feta and egg in a buckwheat crepe. I ordered this combination because Starbucks has it as a breakfast wrap and I like Starbuck's version.
St. Germaine's is a bit different. It is fresher and tastier I am happy to say. The spinach is fresh and leafy, the feta is liberally placed throughout and the egg is not too obtrusive. A nice combination of flavors but the buckwheat crepe is the coup de grace. Very tasty.
I will return for more.
Just back from my virgin voyage to this crepe truck. I created my own, so I guess the rating is somewhat of myself....
"Then how can it not be a 5-star???"
"There are people reading this, you know?"
"Oh, sorry..."
Anyway, I ordered a ham, spinach (which is fresh), sauteed mushroom, feta & goat cheese.
YUM-MEE! And filling! The crepe itself was a tad crispy which was OK by me and the fresh leaf spinach has me feeling a bit better psychologically (diet wise). Like most other lunch spots, go before Noon if you want to avoid a line. Plus they probably only have 2 or 3 pans so they can only go so fast. I didn't heed my own advice today but no worries as it's gorgeous outside.
Definitely a welcome addition to the area. I hope they're parked there for a while!
PS - Yelp "Additional Tips" questions need to adapt to food carts/trucks (Attire? Waiter Service?)
Had the chicken crepe for lunch the other day - delish!
I'm just glad to have them as a lunch option - adds a certain charm to SoMA.
It's an excellent spot. I've gone there several times, experimenting with savory crepes (favorite so far: egg, cheese, caramelized onion).
I am a french citizen and grew up with crepes. I tried a ham and cheese crepe tonight at Saint Germain and it was as good as it gets. Very simple setting (a cart on the sidewalk) but excellent food. It was well worth the wait.
I was a little leery about ordering crepes from a cart in a parking lot, but I was pleasantly surprised!
I ordered the chicken crepe and it was delicious! The crepe was light, crispy, and warm. The veggies inside were fresh and tasty. I was filled up completely without feeling like I overate.
The only downside is the cash-only payment methods. The food was served quickly and with a friendly attitude. Mere steps from my office door, I will be eating here again!
Best crepe I've had since I've been here. Had the raspberry jam which was just OK- maybe I should have had the banana/nutella or savory crepes.
Then again, maybe I'm just not a crepe person. But the crepe was good, the portion large, and the lady friendly. The downside to these food carts is that there's nowhere to sit.
Drop your business card in the candleholder and you might win a free crepe on Fridays- check their Facebook page.
Had the salmon crepe here which cost just under $8. I was pretty surprised by the portion served to me. (It was almost the same size as the 12 inch plate it was served on) It was perfectly simple and delish. Will need to try their other savory crepes. It's so good to see more affordable food options in SOMA other than $5 Indian lunch at Mehfil.
just bought a chocolate infused crepe from here
and
satisfaction coming on
de-lish-us- ness
excuse me now while i proceed into euphoric detachment..

Had a chance to talk to "Z" (or is that "Zee") the lovely woman who opened this creperie truck next to Temple about her first day. It's taken 8 months and 15 different permits and subsequent inspections to open what amounts to a small trailer with 2 crepe griddles. Wow. That's insane. We should all flock to her buckweat creperie if only to help her recoup her costs. She's open from 6am and closes at 3am. Yummy crepes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and post party. Average price around $6.50. Totally worth it.
Came here today for lunch after looking at all the yummy pictures here in Yelp. I got the chicken, tomato, and spinach. It was really good! The crape came out to be soft, with crispy edges. It was done just right, not soggy or hard like some other crape place. I am definitely coming back to try the others. It was difinitely worth the 5 blocks to get here.
