14 reviews for Crêpe Town
Odd sounding combinations abound at Crêpe Town. I would not have thought of stuffing a crêpe with fried fish in a spicy Thai curry, but it really works. The creamy, slightly sweet coconut gravy with the fish fillet well complements the texture and taste of the crêpe. I found myself savoring every bite.
Another odd combination is the Red Bull, a dessert crêpe with both blueberries and strawberries, and Nutella. I must confess I love Nutella. You could serve me Nutella with chicken liver and I would still love it. But, I am confident that even someone who is not as die hard a fan of the chocolate spread would enjoy the Red Bull. This dessert crêpe was positively delightful.
The oddest combination of all at Crêpe Town was the music selection. They mixed Billy Joel with Brian McKnight and the Back Street Boys. That was the one odd combination that didn't quite work at this crêperie.
BTW Crêpe Town, I expect royalties if you start serving a crêpe with Nutella and chicken liver.
I don't know if I can really give an accurate review of Crepe Town right now. I mean, the place is new, and 8 starving Yelpers descended upon this tiny establishment like locusts to a corn field - on a Monday night no less. So I am sure the lovely ladies working there were a wee bit taken aback and maybe a bit overwhelmed.
They did start us off with a plate of onion rings, gratis, which was a nice surprise. Also they informed us that the soup/salad choice of the evening was also included when it normally was an upcharge. Wow, OK score two points!
However, there must have just been one cook in the kitchen, because the entrees came out agonizingly slow. So slow that my entree (the "Spice Up: savory crepe filled with fish, curry sauce and herbs) came out last and 4 people at the table were already done eating! However, the crepe was yummy (think Thai red curry), even though the heat level was pretty non existent (and I had ordered it extra spicy).
Then we all couldn't stand it and had to try dessert. Diana R and I split a modified Funky Monkey Crepe (instead of peanut butter with the bananas and chocolate chips we got Nutella). Either I was too full and sleepy from the Easy Listening music being played (curse you Air Supply!) or it just wasn't as good as the entree. The crepe itself was on the rubbery side and the filling had a weak Nutella flavour.
I like the BYOB option and would definitely come back with either one other person or a much smaller group to see how it fares. They were so nice and accommodating there it would be a shame not to try more items on the menu!
Leading up to our little Crepe Town adventure I had the chorus of the song Funky Town stuck in my head, except it went like this:
Won't you take me to...Crepe Town
Won't you take me to...Crepe Town
Yes, I'm a total dork who was super excited about devouring some yummy crepes. I even forced myself to eat a proper dinner crepe instead of diving right into the sweet ones like I usually do.
Crepe Town is a small, cute little BYOB place. The decor reminds me of a CB2 display window, black and white with some bright yellow and apple green accents. In addition to crepes they also do bubble tea.
For my dinner crepe I got the Tapas Crepe. I'm not sure how it gets its name, but it had shrimp, spinach, garlic and peppers inside. It was good, not great; I think the sauce needed a little zing, or maybe blacken, instead of grill, the shrimp. I would order it again, I just wouldn't make a special trip for that dish.
For my desert crepe I did a make your own; they have a list of add-ins and toppings up front. They should either print this list on the menu or make some extra copies for the tables, we were given the list since we were occupying 75% of the restaurant. Anyway, I ordered a sweet crepe with banana, strawberry and chocolate; it was glorious! So sweet and yummy I gobbled up every last bite. I did notice they put a lot of effort into the presentation of the sweet crepes, that is ignored with the savories.
Service was very nice, but the food delivery was piecemeal. We were given a complimentary appetizer of onion rings, good, but an odd menu item in a crepe place; and offered a choice of soup or salad, which normally isn't included. The crepes came out haphazardly, by the time the last sweet crepe came out the first was finished.
There are four things this place could improve upon:
* Add a crepe pan or cook so that each tables' dishes come out together, or close to it
* Revise the menu - add the build your own option to it and clarify some confusing wording
* Change the music up - I heard Air Supply, Backstreet Boys, Billy Joel, instrumental and Brian McKnight
* Get a website or get the menu on Menupages
Located right across from the Sheridan El stop and on the 151 bus line it's a cute little place to grab a tasty crepe.
Crepes are great no matter what time of the day it is!
This little shop stays open until 10pm and serves up tasty hand held treats! You can also sit down and have a nice breakfast, lunch or dinner here too. I can see coming home from a ballgame, exiting the Sheridan El, and going these delicious crepes instead of hopping over to the traditional to Byron's for a hot dog.
Friendly service
Cute atmosphere
Tasty food
Great location
Deeeelish!
CUTE space!!
BYOB. Service was a little slow. One waitress doing the whole place on what seemed like an unusually busy night.... It seemed like the crepes came out of the kitchen one at a time, too, so maybe there was only one person working the kitchen.
We started out with the stuffed mushrooms (bacon+mozzarella). Decent but probably wouldn't get again.
We ordered 6 crepes (3 of us) and most were good.
I ordered the creamy chicken... it wasn't as great as I had hoped, but OK. The creamy sauce basically looked and tasted like a can of "cream of" soup mixed with chicken. I ate it all, but I probably wouldn't order it again. The two queens at the table next to us ordered this too and they really didn't like it. Also, I didn't really understand the sauces that came with it... It was some sort of ketchup and I believe either a spicy mustard or mayo. I don't understand why this would be served with the "cream of" crepe.
Brian ordered the 'spice up.' Spice up!!!! A fried fish + Thai coconut curry sauce. I couldn't stop eating his crepe. Clearly my favorite!! I'm going to crave this one day soon and need to go back.
Don't skip over the breakfast ones, even at dinner! One of us ordered an egg crepe that had chopped chicken and basil. It was basically basil chicken meets crepe. Tasted great from what I tried.
I'd say skip anything that sounds like it's a sandwich more than a crepe. The turkey and cheese for example. Skip it. It's basically a turkey sandwich with a crepe as its bread. Unless of course you're *wanting* a sandwich...
The sweet/dessert crepes were fantastic! I ordered the 'Red Bull' which is nutella+blueberries+strawberries. I added a scoop of green tea ice cream. A bit of an oddball combination, but tasty none-the-less.
The waitress asked for our feedback at the end, a nice touch!
Well priced, good food... just be patient and try a variety of things if you can. Definitely worth a try!
I tried the chicken bacon ranch Crepe.... I already know what you're thinking...why order the Americanized sounding crepe? might as well have went to Burger King or Quiznos. Well I read a review on here that said it was GOOD. So I thought, why not? I will give it a try.
Too bad it was Disgusting, with a Captial D.
The sweet crepe flavor did not meld well with the savory components. The lettuce became wilted inside and was not so appetizing. The worst part was that someone in the kitchen thought it would be smart to garnish my crepe with KETCHUP. WTF?!? I do not appreciate ketchup on my crepe, the swirly red designs ruined the dish. I am nauseous just thinking about it. Yuck.
The only good thing here is the fast service and the complimentary salad before the crepe.
Le yuck.
I was super-excited to try this place out. It is near my house, and I love crepes. What could go wrong? Went on Sunday morning with my boyfriend, and there was plenty of seating. It's really cute in there - a sort of bright, café atmosphere. "Oh, yes," I thought, "this will be tasty." Then I opened my menu. "Oh, no," I thought. "This will be awful." This is one of the strangest menus I've ever seen. There are a few standard crepes. Butter and sugar, Nutella, etc. All the rest are these weird, tricked-out, novelty fillings. Pina Colada Crepe? Cookie Monster Crepe? BBQ Crepe? What the deuce? On the appetizer menu, there's a bunch of bar food, like fried calamari and chicken wings.
I kept it simple and ordered a strawberry and blueberry crepe. It arrived slightly undercooked and smothered with Reddi-Whip and rainbow sprinkles. Sprinkles! The fruit inside was frozen. I mean, it had been at one point. It wasn't icy or anything. But overall, it was pretty mediocre. The place seems like a foreign person's idea of what Americans think French food should taste like. So strange. When I complained to my roommate at its lack of authenticity upon arriving home, she said, "It's called Crepe Town. What did you expect?" Touché. I guess I was fooled by the accent circumflex.
Never again.
This place is fine if you've questioned why people don't use crepes in lieu of tortillas or bread more often. If you're looking for an authentic, delicious crepe experience, though, keep looking. La Creperie on Clark is pretty magnifique.
Even with this horrible Fall weather, restaurants like Crepe Town are bringing back thoughts of Spring as they spring up out of no where with bright colors.
Crepe Town (CT) is the place for either a sweet or a savory tooth. Their unique crepes have fun names such as Tapas Crepe (grilled shrimp, crab stick, bell peppers, spinach and garlic), Potato Lover Crepe (chicken or beef with potatoes, carrots, onions and curry powder) or Cheesecake Crepe (cream cheese, cracker crumbs and blueberries). You don't have to stick to their creations...build your own "Someone Like You" [$8] savory crepe with 5 ingredients or a dulce "Sweet Moment" [$7.50] with 3 ingredients. If you like spice to your crepe selection, they can add as much as you'd like. Don't miss out on the weekends when they open at 8 am and serve up breakfast crepes.
CT also offers fried appetizers galore with stuffed mushrooms (mozzarella cheese, bacon and mushroom), chicken wings, cheese sticks, crispy shrimp with mango sauce and more.
And who's with me that Jamba Juice is overpriced and so last year? CT offers fresh mixed fruit smoothies for $4 or Bubble Teas of green tea, taro, plum, coconut, honeydew, milk tea or coffee. Since I have Celiac I wasn't able to try the crepes (no matter how much I wanted to), but on my way home from work I grabbed a Strawberry-Mango Smoothie before jumping on the Red Line at Sheridan and it was perfect to bring back those warm Spring days. Some may not like the gelatin "fruit" at the bottom of the smoothie. I loved it but just warning those who don't care much for the unknown (it looked a bit like egg whites).
Feel free to dine in, but they also do carry our and delivery (W Damen, E Lake Shore, N Lawrence, S Belmont). CT should be a great addition to the Irving-hood.
Damn tasty crepes, good service and BYOB (cuz what goes better with crepes than wine?).
The chicken and pesto crepe is fantastic and of course, you can't go wrong with nutella and ice cream crepe (with oreo chucks to boot). we spilt those two dishes, an appetizer of the crispy shrimp (and they gave us free onion rings. why? who knows) for $21. Plus, the server didn't even flinch when (in the interest of economy) my husband plunked down the big liter bottle of wine.
One word of advice though...they like to decorate their plates with random sauces. Ours came with a criss-cross design of spicy ketchup -not good with chicken pesto. If you're picky, as for no decoration.
After spending a wonderful autumn afternoon exploring Graceland Cemetery with my mom, we decided that all that walking warranted some nourishment. We were on our way to Pizza Rustica (A wonderful little restaurant with some great Italian fare) when we stumbled upon the newly opened Crepe Town right next door.
The menu in the window looked delicious and we just couldn't pass up the chance to try something new. And, might I say, I'm so happy we didn't.
The place is transformed: walls painted in funky, fresh greens, tons of fresh flowers decorating the bar--they've certainly made good use of this small space.
Now the important par: the food. Absolutely scrumptious!
We split the Chicken Bacon Ranch crepe (which was more than enough to share) and it was delicious. Grilled chicken, bacon and cheese with a creamy ranch sauce wrapped in a light and fluffy crepe...
glancing at the dessert side of the menu, they all sounded too good to resist (so why try?). We shared the Funky French Monkey; peanut butter with bananas, chocolate chips and topped with whipped cream. mmmmm. so yummy. this must be what diabetes tastes like.
Service was friendly, food delicious and affordable (about 6 to 8 dollars per dish). All in all, a wonderful little addition to the neighborhood.
If you want traditional crepes DO NOT COME HERE. I knew what I was in for and over all it was OK. They basically use the crepe as the carb portion (rather than bred or rice) The dessert crepe was good and the curry fish thing I had was good but it was a basic curry. I guess what I'm trying to say is that at least they could try some french infusion w/ the random cultual dishes...more than just slapping it on a crepe.
Interesting idea though.
I probably won't go back, mostly because it's not in my neighborhood.
Crepe Town, J'ai été agréablement surpris.
Arriving tres tot on a Monday soir, they set up the table for the 8 of us and let me sit and read as I awaited mes amis. I felt bad sitting there not ordering anything, so I got a Pink Flamingo bubble tea. Some of the tapioca balls had a bit of an odd aftertaste, but overall this huge strawberry banana concoction was tres bon.
We were given onion rings to start with on the house, they were nice and light. We were also given salad or soup which is usually an upcharge. I chose the salad, which was nicely dressed and simple. For my entree, I chose the chicken bacon ranch crepe, hold the chicken, add ham, and the waitress accomodated the odd request without flinching. The ranch was only in random pockets of the crepe, but it was still good. Unfortunately, I don't think they were ready for such a big party, as our crepes came out at vastly different times. For dessert, I had the Caramel Pina Colada crepe, which had pineapple inside and a scoop of coconut ice cream on the side. It too was nice and light.
I liked the decor of the place and it was spotlessly clean.
It is right by the Sheridan El stop, very convenient. I would go back with a smaller party or by myself.
This place was...fine. Cute space, BYOB, but not really sure what it's trying to be. A brunch spot? Cozy dinner place? It's kind of trying to be everything all at once.
I agree with other reviewers that the service was slow -- we could only see one person working there on a Friday at around 7, though surely there were more in the back. I got a barbecue chicken crepe, which was decent but had way too many raw onions in it for my taste. Friend got the chicken bacon ranch crepe and enjoyed it, although when I tried a bite, I was puzzled by the presence of Romaine lettuce. Lettuce in a crepe? I don't know, maybe I'm missing something. For dessert we had the cookie monster crepe, which was definitely tasty but somehow underwhelming. I guess based on the size of the savory crepes (they were very filling, one per person was a reasonable dinner) I was expecting something huge, but the dessert crepe was much smaller.
On the whole, I was not impressed, but since I live in the neighborhood I'll probably go back, just for the novelty of crepes for dinner. As we were leaving, my friend observed that it was pretty economical, as we had a filling dinner plus dessert for two for about $22. However, when you remember that we were eating $7 crepes that were barely more than mediocre for dinner, it doesn't look that economical at all.
On Saturdays my mom and I usually like to get a crepe at the Green City Market, but now that it's closed we were wondering where else to get crepes from. We were driving around for some time and we saw a sign that said "CrepeTown." What our luck!! My mom and I both ordered sweet crepes ( everyone has a sweet tooth, right) mom strawberry and bannana with butter and sugar and me nutella with strawberrys. Honestly it isn't that weird a combination. The tarter taste of the strawberrys compliments the sweet nuttela beautifully. The crepe is so crisy on the outside and the gooey filling is so delicious. It did take quite a long time for the crepe to come out even though we were the only people there.
If you go there, you have to try there smoothies. Mom and I split a strawberry and bannana smoothie and it was dee-licious.
My overall review of this place is pretty good just hire some other people. You should try it. Just bring a book to read while your waiting.
