This review is for their dinner menu and service. The food is just as delicious as their brunch--large portions and reasonable prices. Unfortunately, if you're a vegetarian, 99% of their menu have meat or fish so this might not be the best option for you. However, meat-lovers will be satisfied.

I had the sirloin steak with potato gratin. The beef was so tender I barely had to chew it. The sauce was perfect.

The negatives are: limited dessert menu and slow service. They only had one waitress (who was also the hostess) working on a Friday night. The bartender pitched in, but he kept advertising their brunch and bar specials. I felt like I was getting interrupted by a salesperson while I was trying to finish my dinner.

I agree with every other post in this thread that the chicken and waffles are the reason to come to Creme for a weekend brunch. I am not an expert at chicken and waffle reviews but I absolutely loved this dish and appreciated that they asked if we wanted light or dark meat chicken.

I tried to avoid the wait and called the restaurant 3x to try to get a reservation but no one ever picked up the phone.  For a party of two, it was only 20 minutes of waiting at 11:30 on a Saturday which wasn't awful.

This is one of those places that's more focused on show than substance. Perfect example: the two-person high tables by the entrance are about 2-3 inches too small in diameter for practically sitting two people. Why? Because they use those super wide brim plates that you see in gourmet restaurants, so two plates pushed together at the center of the table still hang over the edges by about an inch on each side.

I went for brunch, got there fairly early (around 11 or 11:30) and we were seated right away. By the time we left at 1, the line was out the door.

I got the fried chicken and waffle because I grew up in PG County so I love me some fried chicken and waffles. The waffle was OK, but I was sorely disappointed in the chicken; it was dry and luke warm. Luke warm I understand, but how do you dry out fried chicken? It's like drying out a hard boiled egg!

If you don't might a wait, go to Busboys and Poets at 14 and V. If you're in a hurry, go to the U St Cafe across the street.

This review is for their brunch menu.

The food here is very good.  Everything I've ever tried has been very tasty and this is a great brunch place to have on the back burner if people are in town.  The french toast is the best I've ever had.

My biggest complaint is the service.  I'm sorry if I paid $12+ a person for bottomless mimosa then I want bottomless!  I shouldn't have to keep begging for another one.  Bottomless does not mean stop be after 2.  Its just rude and tacky.  Also they are so slow and the seating can be tight.  Also the music on some weekends is so loud and it seems they just group all the 20s in one area.

I might be back again but I'm not sure.

So I just had dinner here and will say it was pretty good.  I ordered the crab stuffed hushpuppies to start, when they came to the table and I tried one I couldnt taste any crab so when I told the bartender he went back and brought out a new batch which was filled with crab and were hot and well seasoned.

I ordered the shrimp and grits for dinner and it came out piping hot and very flavorful.  The staff was really friendly too, the bartender asked my name when I first sat down and each time he checked in on me he called me by my name which I thought was pretty cool.  I  think I found my new local neighborhood hangout.....i will definitely be back.

Went for brunch with a group of five.  I wouldn't recommend going in groups as it's pretty small.  Better for dates.

I had the delicious Applewood smoked bacon quiche with wilted spinach & cheese that was served with a small salad and fruit, and I ordered side of Breakfast Potatoes.  The potatoes were cooked with onion, which I like, but they were a little bit greasy and flimsy.

Had a sampling of one friend's waffle and another's french toast.  Both were equally delicious.  I did not try the chicken, but my friend said it was some of the best chicken she had.

Decor was simple and elegant.  Service was good.

    Well done Creme.

    Jon--

My hankering for a place that has a good brunch reputation AND serves chicken and waffles led me to Creme Cafe. Result? Not bad at all.

The decor was very post-modern trendy, but not offensively so. The server (Marvin) was very attentive and kept my coffee mug full at all times. And despite the fact that it was 12pm on a Sunday with a pretty decent crowd, we never felt rushed and the staff seemed very poised and collected. Bravo!

Food was pretty decent. Chicken and waffles gets you a decent waffle (not too crispy, not too mushy) and two above-average pieces of fried chicken that was surprisingly light on the grease and well-seasoned. Minor quibbles: the cold, third-rate syrup was kept on the table a la IHOP.  Both the chicken pieces (thigh and drumstick) were slightly on the small side. And when I asked for hot sauce, I got Tabasco. C'mon! Chicken and waffles deserves some Texas Pete or Franks at least!

My friend had the vegetarian mushroom benedict. It was crammed with a whole lotta mushrooms and looked pretty darn tasty. She assured me (in between sips of her bottomless mimosa that was kept full by the eagle-eyed Marvin) that it was.

Verdict? Decent, decent, decent. Had the price been a few buck cheaper (my chicken and waffles came to $14), I would have offered up another star. Another time, perhaps.

Creme Cafe is a really cute place - trendy and inviting, with curved light-colored wood on their bar and lounge. It's not very big - there is the lounge in front, and then a bar that runs the length of the restaurant on one side. On the other side is a row of tables along the wall - maybe eight tables of two or so. They had great happy hour deals - $3 house wine and domestic beers, $5 rail drinks, $5 appetizers, and $5 burgers.

I had the house red, an Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignon, and tried the mussels, which were great. I also shared a burger with Jeff, and that was pretty great, too.

It wasn't busy at all, which was very nice for our group - we had plenty of space and could easily have a conversation.

Fail. They took a reservation for our party and then when we arrived there was no table. We waited 30 minutes and then were seated at a table too small for our group. The hostess was useless and unapologetic telling us we needed to "call ahead" even though we made a reservation which to my mind is calling ahead, right?. Went to Ulah Bistro and they treated us with respect, a quality they desperately need at Creme.

Had brunch here in an 8-person group...it's a tiny place, and we were probably the largest group in there, but they made it work without too long of a wait which was a major plus.

Food was awesome.  The fried chicken in the chicken and waffles dish was some of the best I've had and the chesapeake benedict tasted amazing as well.  I didn't have the mimosas, but other people at the table said that they were very good.

Service was eh.  The waitress seemed out of it and not very friendly, but it was nothing that ruined the experience of the awesome food.

    Would definitely return!

This place has really damn good, remarkably strong drinks.  It's crazy that you've probably walked by it 100 times on U St and maybe didn't notice it all tucked away.

Much better drinks than the Gibson IMHO and you can actually afford enough of them to feel it, too.

-5 rum punch: an epic classic ($5 at happy hour and more than worth it)
    -this crazy spicy mango thing
-lots of delicious, well mae girly drinks
    -cute bartender

Oh, maybe the last item shouldn't be on that list.

Yuck. The only redeeming aspect of our brunch visit here (on a Sunday at 12:30) was that Creme managed to seat a group of 6 within 20 minutes. Otherwise, my small cup of coffee was truck-stop caliber (and an astonishing $3.50), the waffle I ordered was bland and on the mushy side, and as others have noted, the syrup was the cheapo type and stuck to the table. I considered ordering an omelet, but was turned off when the server noted that toast was not included, but could be ordered separately - for $4. One dining companion was happy with her shrimp and grits.

Have you ever heard from someone, "when you visit Maryland, you've got to try their crab cakes."

I heeded to that advice, and I will never turn back.

My crab cake benedict was DEE-LISH! Perfect amount of hollandaise topping two fistfuls of crab cake and poached eggs really satisfied me all day!

I didn't even think about food until 10PM that night!

Hubby had the chicken and waffle, touched with just a bit of sweetness on the chicken.  Nice finish as you savor that bite.

That is what I call a great brunch!

We hit Creme Cafe for Brunch shortly after moving to DC and was immediately impressed.  Great interior and wonderful service.  What we had:

    1) Chicken & Waffles - Really good eats and a fun experience.  Pour some Tabasco over it with the syrup!

    2) Crab Cake Benedict - THIS was fantastic and definitely what pushed Creme from 4 to 5 stars.

Next time I go I will be ordering the shrimp grits!

After reading the reviews from Yelp I decided to check out Creme Cafe and Lounge for breakfast and I was not disappointed.  The place is small so it fills up fast... my suggestion is to call ahead because they don't take reservations.

    Key Points:
    1. The Banana Foster pancakes where true to there taste (especially if you know what it should taste like) and a must to order.

    2. When they say "bottomless Mimosa" they mean it!  I'm not even sure they included the orange juice.

    3. The chicken and waffles where ok...  I have definitely tasted better but I don't think you would be disappointed.

    4. The omelet....    serious!

I will be going back but this is not a big group restaurant.  Go with a date or chill by yourself and your IPad and you wont be sorry.  Also, dropping $60 is about average for a meal.

this is my first Brunch in DC. My friend an I were at the restaurant at about 11-ish and we were lucky enough to get a table by the window immediately even without making a reservation.
I ordered the Wild Mushroom, it was amazing ;) however, i believe that they can improve the Grits as the texture is a little too rough.
My friend had the Chesapeake and she loved it as well.

More like 3.5 stars.  This is a reliable place for brunch, with good quality food, a comfortable atmosphere, and reasonable prices.  Bonus for being so close to the Metro.  I've been here three or four times now (as recently as last week) and found them to be consistent.  The menu items have enough of a twist that you don't think you're having "just another" eggs benedict or omelette.

I took a vegetarian friend here last week, and she enjoyed the selection too.

The only thing that cost them their 4-star rating was the hostess who made it clear she didn't want us to stay for long after we finished our food.  I absolutely understand that they want to turn around the tables quickly to accommodate a busy crowd -- but she could have handled it with a bit more graciousness and politeness.

Go early (around 11am or earlier) if you can to avoid the rush.

GREEN EGGS AND HAM, said ADA, I AM. OK, the last part doesn't rhyme like the original, but GREEN EGGS AND HAM!!!! A literary childhood reference to Dr.Seuss dream delight come true. Make that a DELICIOUS delight. It was served perfectly proportionate for my brunch outing. A friend of mine ordered a side of bacon and it was the best damn bacon I have EVER eaten. We didn't want to let the last piece go to waste, so I packed it up in a napkin, like a hobo, and left it in my bag. Note to self: Remember to take bacon out of bag at end of day in friend's house unless you'd like her cats to eat it. Hours later, Super COLD bacon tucked deep inside my bag, and even the cat found its smell and consumed it?!? Well, that should say something about the quality of its strength.

Another plus: my waiter had a hoop earring on his left which led me to assume he was a pirate. When I asked him his name, I was really disappointed when he told me it was something other than Jack Sparrow, but I wasn't disappointed with the friendly service.

Came here for brunch because our guest really enjoy this place. Personally after reading the reviews and looking at the menu, I didn't want to come here but guess we have to go where our host take us lol
We got there and were seated right away so that was good especially hearing that brunch get really crowed. Four of us order 3 chicken and waffle and I order the crab benedict just to be different plus DC has good seafood especially bluecrabs. The crabcake was pretty decent and you can actually taste the crab. The fried chicken was the highlight of brunch, it was nice and crunchy and it has some good flavor. The waffle on the other hand suck, it was SOGGY and bland. I couldn't make myself to eat 1 bite. One of my friend found a HAIR in her chicken and it was fried w/the chicken so it look pretty dam gross. The waitress took back the food and took it off the bill but after seeing that, it made everyone gross out. This place is either a hit or a miss but i didn't really care for most of the things here beside  the fried chicken. I won't be coming back here anytime soon or in the future. There way too many great places to try then settle for here.

Was just there last night for a friend's going away dinner before moving  overseas for a few months.

We went around 6, so still had some of their happy hour time available. Creme is a small place, so when the waitress told me that I could only get the happy hour specials directly at the bar, it struck me as a bit weird, since my table was right next to the bar.

So, since we all were down for cheap drinks, we stood up and sat at the bar for a few drinks, then moved (fresh drinks in hand) to the table. Since there were only a few people in there, I'm not entirely sure why they
wouldn't make it work, but oh well.

Food wise, Creme is pretty darn good. I had the crab cake over mushy peas and mustard sauce, and it was superbly cooked. the flavor explosion I experienced was also very unexpected, but surprises like that are always welcomed by me.

Our table started off with their crab hush puppies, which holy crap, were awesome!

The bread that the serve to your table with hummus to start is also pretty darn good.

    Others at the table had:

Burger: it was puney. I always have an issue with oversized buns, and this burger seemed to take the cake with that. the bun was almost double the size of the patty.

Meat and potatoes: the scalloped potatoes served with the tender meat were incredible. the meat got huge reviews as well.

Shrimp and Grits: My friend that got this, comes often and this is her go-to dish. The serving was huge and was definitely enough for leftovers.

I am curious to go back fro brunch, as I have heard good things, I just hope that they have more of a crowd than was there last night. 2 tables of people over a 3 hour period is not a good sign. Knowing that Creme restructured its business a few months ago, I hope that they can overcome this and stick around!

I imagine there's not much I can say that has not already been said, but a pretty solid brunch option, in my estimation. Looked like had we gotten there much later we would have been waiting for a while, but we were seated within 5-10 minutes.

The service was friendly, but fairly average. Hit up the crab & eggs benedict which was heavy on the crab and Old Bay and not swimming in hollandaise - so, pretty awesome in my book. Bottomless mimosas are always a good thing, too.

My friends and I went for Happy Hour.

I had some of the following from their Happy Hour menu:

crab hush puppies: good flavor, slightly on the burnt side.

wild mushrooms with manchego cheese: the first time we had them they had a variety of mushrooms, this time they stuck to one but the flavor was still very good.

shrimp risotto: decent flavor however a touch too oily.

All in all, not too shabby.

I've only been here for weekend brunch, and I've only ordered one thing off the brunch menu, so I have NO idea what the rest of their food is like.

That said, the chicken and waffles are SO GOOD.  I'd never had chicken and waffles before, so this was a real treat.  The waffle is nice and fluffy.  The chicken (dark meat) was fantastic.  I love the crispy, tasty, friedness!  I was a bit disappointed the last time we went as I only got a tiny piece of strawberry and one blueberry on my plate, but it was still a great meal.  The syrup is also great.  So delicious!  This was the perfect meal after an 8 mile walk.  We were there pretty early, too, so the place wasn't crowded at all.

Next time we come back, I think I'll branch out and try something else on their menu.

Ya know, this well may have been the most delicious [savory] brunch I have ever had in DC.

I got the quiche: fluffy eggs, yummy cheese, and spinach tossed into one amazing taste sensation. Even the crust was good, though a little firm. The green eggs and ham left R burping for the rest of the day. I can only assume that it was a compliment to the chef.

One thing: ask for the pitcher (or bottomless, I guess) mimosa, because a glass is $8! Eight whole dollars! I mean, it was tasty and sweet, but it wasn't made with Cristal or anything.

Service was good. Not great, but good. The hostess was too busy bussing tables to notice when we walked in, which was disorienting, but that did mean that we were seated at a clean table quicker, so I decided to dismiss it.

In conclusion, damn tasty brunch. I'm bound to become a repeat offender.

Me and the fiancee decided to walk down to U st. for brunch and stopped at Creme. We got here right around the time brunch began on a Saturday and were seated immediately. Shortly thereafter we got there though it did start to get a little crowded so I'd recommend coming a bit early if your going to eat here.

We didn't sit very long before we were asked what we wanted to drink, we both got hot tea we both enjoyed what we got, I remember it being tasty but I can't remember what I drank, interesting. I actually remember getting the French Toast with bananas foster and a side of bacon because it's not really a meal without bacon and I don't just mean for breakfast or brunch either, it's bacon it's in it's own food group, the food group called "awesome". I'd actually never had bananas foster before but if it always taste like this then I will forever be a fan. The french toast was good by itself but with the bananas foster it was great, I didn't even use the syrup provide it was so good. The bacon was good as well, I mean it's bacon and you get at least four slices of french toast. I really don't remember what my fiancee had but I do remember that she liked whatever she ate.

For us, at least so far, this is one of the best brunches within walking distance. We haven't tried everything in our area yet but I would definitely come back again and recommend others come here, which I don't do often. They get five stars from me I had/have no complaints.

Had a nice late dinner here on a bustling Friday night around U Street.  The staff were attentive in just the right way.

I was craving a Caesar salad, and Creme's hit the spot perfectly:  not too overdressed, the right amount of cheese, crunchy lettuce.  I wish more places would follow Creme's lead on this classic salad.  My dining companions had salmon and hush puppies and were happy with those as well.  All the portions were generous (I'll note the hush puppies come with many to an order - better as a shared appetizer than as a substitute for a meal).

For dessert we chose the strawberry shortcake over the coconut cake.  It wasn't exactly a shortcake, more like a parfait with chocolate cake, cream, and lots of ripe strawberries.  But it was delicious!

Eggs Chesapeake were delish, but the service was lacking. Coffee and iced tea tasted gross. Restrooms were not clean.....yikes.

Not somewhere I'm in a rush to get back to.

Really disappointing.  Came here for brunch. The bellini was good, but it ended up costing 11 dollar (the price of drinks was not listed on the menu.) My eggs were ok, but were served on a stale bagel that had clearly been frozen. (I freeze bread at home all the time-- I guess they don't do it right, but why on earth are they not getting fresh bread from a supplier?)  Side salad was DRENCHED in an overly sweet dressing that got all over the bagel. Fail, fail, fail.  There is too much competition out there to charge these prices and serve bad food.

Went there a few weeks ago, got there at 5:50.  Door was locked, no hours posted.  See people inside, they ignore me.  (If I was alone, prob would have left, but I was meeting someone.)  Waited 10-15 minutes (btw, I'm 8+ mo pregnant, there is no seating outside, I'm perched on the window ledge.)  Finally get let in, but instead of saying hello and letting me in, the staff spends 5 minutes fiddling with the door, eventually get the lock in place, and walks back inside without saying hi.

Food - steak with potato cake was wonderful, very surprising.  Fried chicken and sides were pretty mediocre, certainly nothing to go back for.  Bread pudding was disappointing.

Service - not bad, we were the only customers, didn't have to ask for more waters but took a while to get our check (waitress just wasn't paying attention).

Overall - nothing special.  Prob won't go back.

I'm one of the few people who has reviewed this place and eaten dinner, rather than the regular brunch review.  My wife would probably give this place a four, and I acted like it was a four, but upon reflection, I think it was to make myself feel better about paying $60 for what was just a mere pretty good meal.

Being from the south, I know what good soul food tastes like, and that probably undermined my ability to enjoy the dinner.  For example, the hushpuppies (for $11!!!) - it's hard to goof up hushpuppies, but even so, they weren't great.  The shrimp and grits - they were pretty good, but a $22 plate should be more than pretty good.  The coconut cake really was delicious, but as you can see, the whole experience was just decent.  For $60, I'll go to a chain restaurant and have the works.

    I give it a 3.5.

My beah had his first Chicken n'  Waffle Happy Day!  He's a fan.  I'll get him drinking sugar water yet!  Oh, wait...

I had the shroom benedict which was just alright- it might have been a bit too shroomy even for my taste.  We shared a side of grits which was also just alright- really thick (ice cream scooper required kinda thick) and a little bland.

I'm totally not being vulgar, but I had a damn good Pink Pussy during brunch too.  I let the beah taste it, but I wanted it all to myself.  It was some high class puss-, I mean vodka, too, it was more expensive than my meal ($11)!

Our server was nice.  She didn't mind when we started using our straws to blow, um... water on each other.  I bet it was quite a sight since we were seated right by the window.

    Thanks for brunch, Juicy.  ;-)

There wasn't much at brunch that would send me back. I ordered the lox benedict. The eggs were poached well, but the bagel was terrible. I think it's inexcusable for restaurant that charges $11 for a bellini to serve what is most likely a frozen bagel. Why can't some of the profits of that drink go to getting fresh baked goods? The salad was also heavy dressed with a very sweet dressing that ended up saturating the bagel. Not the most pleasant of meals.

On the positive side, service was attentive and we were seated quickly.

I absolutely love Creme Cafe. I have been here for both brunch and dinner, and thought the food was exceptional on both occasions. The spot is crowded at brunch as it is a popular place, but I came with a group of 6 and we were still seated after a reasonable wait. I built my own omelet, which was delicious, and drooled over the other dishes at my table (shrimp and grits, wild mushroom bene, lox and a bagel benedict). Everyone in my party really enjoyed their food here, and I saw a few orders of chicken waffles at other tables that tickled my fancy. Service was totally acceptable given how packed it was.

Came for dinner with a http://restaurant.com gift certificate (which are fairly regular). My friends and I ended up ordering two bottles of wine, the curried coconut mussels, the crabmeat hushpuppies, the pan roasted chicken breast, shrimp and grits, and braised lamb shank. We were hungry. And feeling indulgent. Everything was DELICIOUS. The mussels were incredible, and we all enjoyed our respective entrees.

This place has a really nice atmosphere at dinner, not too crowded, dimly lit and pretty intimate, there were definitely a lot of couples here. I had so much fun I didn't care if we went out after.

I will definitely be back here, and I would recommend this place for both brunch and dinner.

Hey so when you hear "Bottomless Mimosas" what comes to mind?  Is it a never-ending, never empty orange juice and champagne combo in a glass?  Well, according to Creme it means "We can only server you three glasses in an hour because then you get your money's worth and we still get over".  Yep, you read correctly, Creme is in the business of FALSE ADVERTISEMENT.  My friends ordered the so called bottomless mimosas and were informed by  our waitress that they were CUT OFF because they'd met their hour limit.  WTF?  Sorry Creme, your food isn't good enough for me to come back and clearly neither are you Bottomless (three glass maximum) Mimosas.
