Really excellent drip coffee! Their Terroir coffee was the best coffee I had in Boston by leaps and bounds! I inquired about the specifics, and they were brewing Angolian coffee that day. Seriously, coffee unlike any i've tasted in a long time. I'd rate it up there with Blue Bottle, Intelligentsia and Ritual Coffee Roasters. Good sandwiches, good place to work too, since they have plentiful of power. The wifi is spotty, but that just increases productivity in my case.
They're very crowded and it's hard to get a seat, but their line (although long) moves really fast and I never had to wait more than 2 minutes to get to talk to a server.
I'd recommend this place to anyone!
Stopped by on Tuesday afternoon to get tea and chat with a friend. Crema is a SUPER cute coffee shop right in Harvard Square and it has a pretty solid menu. My friend raved about the food and said that it was one of her favorite places to study in the area.
I ordered a chai tea latte and a mom's birthday cake cupcake (tough decision, since the desserts all looked delicious). My tea was great, but my cupcake was mediocre. Definitely not up to par with the gourmet cupcakes that I'm used to... though I suppose it was my own fault for having high expectations of a coffee shop cupcake.
I love this place! It's located right in Harvard Square and at the time, an old man was performing what seemed like a personal song that went something like "I am alone and so lonely...". Made me want to hug and kiss him.
But I didn't. What I did do was have some mocha, apple cider, tomato bisque, and the Crema Grilled Chicken (recommended by my friend). The drinks were pretty good but the apple cider was on the thin side. I like mine thick and hearty so that I know the apples were there. This was kind of more like really hot apple juice or apple cider from a mix.
I don't have high hopes for cafe sandwiches because they're either not good or if they are, they are a generic panini of some sort. But here, it's the Crema Grilled Chicken that would make me come back and not necessarily the drinks. Nicely cooked chicken breast pieces with cotija-corn cheese spread pressed between two slices of sourdough... and not to forget, fresh avocado! It's simple but made so well and it helps that they put corn kernels in it too!!! Lover of corn but not an advocate of unnaturally corn fed animals - booyah!
It seems like one of those places that's always packed so I don't recommend coming with a lot of people unless you're able to score the big table upstairs all to yourselves. Otherwise, just look for a smaller one inside, outside, anywhere. It's lovely.
Very unique and inventive menu here. interesting sandwiches on iggy bread with all kinds of fillings. their signature crema chicken sandwich is delicious but i have my eye on the turkey & jarlsberg one w/ pickles for next time.
coffee here is perfect. strong with out being bitter and they actually have cafe au lait. Why is it so hard to get one this side of the atlantic? I am tired of having to dissect the starbuck's menu to figure out what might be the closest approximation to it, and trying to articulate the concept of strong hot coffee + steamed milk using standard English vernacular is useless. Well, no matter, now I go to at café crema and delicious things are in store for me there.
delicious things like their "cannelle bordelais". Pop one of those little babies in your mouth and you will be transported to a candy land of milk and honey and sugar kisses.
I want you to try and imagine what a vanilla custard filled marshmallow dipped in caramel would taste like. that's a cannelle bordelaise. Don't worry about trying to pronounce it. simply go up to the counter, point and or drool at the little star shaped cylindrical dumpling of a cake, hand over a mere $1.50 you will be rewarded with the most delicious thing you've ever tasted. Stuff it in your mouth between sips of a café au lait and thank me later.
I was visiting Boston/Cambridge from Chicago and on my first day of the trip, needed to kill some time in the morning before my friends were available to hang out. I had an empty stomach and a book to read and wanted to find a cute place to chill for a few hours. Lucy for me, I stumbled upon Crema Cafe!
When I arrived, they weren't yet serving lunch so I got a latte and a chocolate croissant to munch on. I was loving the music and my seat at the coffee bar, so I decided to stick around til "sandwich time" so I could order a unique creation that I had my eye on: a sweet potato sandwich. Sweet potato? Avocado? Apples? Hummus? Vinaigrette made of roasted shallots? These are all foods that I love but would have never thought to put together in one magnificent sandwich. This sloppy monstrosity hit the spot, despite being a bit difficult to eat.
Next time I'm in the area, I will surely visit this place again. Great people watching and a fun, delicious way to start my vacation!
It's a rainy Boston day and I needed some nourishment and a steaming cafe au lait. Crema cafe has a cozy atmosphere with large work tables long enough to hold students, writers, and families. Just as if you were in a German beer garden you sit together at this place. This cafes' close encounters has European sensibility of being able to connect people with their community while enjoying delicious food and drink.
I opt for the quiche, freshly made with ingredients like leeks, caramelized onions, and sometimes sweet potatoes. When I'm in the mood for sweet I like the rosemary and goat cheese sandwich with honey.
All and all this is probably my favorite new establishment in Harvard Square.
Seriously such a great study spot. Plenty of seating. Amazing staff.
And even though I'm now watching my weight, I couldn't resist the Felipe's Hot Chocolate and their Thai Iced Latte.
I only wish I knew how many points was in each!
*nervousness arises on how many points I may have gone over for the day*
And why my initial 4 stars is beyond me, because clearly, Crema is 5 star material!!!
*** Update 9/24/09 ***
I had actually e-mailed the cafe in regards to what is actually in the Thai Iced Latte and the Felipe's Hot Chocolate and the owner was extremely fast in responding with what they have in it despite not knowing the points conversion. While not knowing the conversions, which I didn't expect Marley to know, I fully appreciated how quick the response back to me was along with the helpful nutritional information provided.
Additionally, I was back again two days after my initial visit this week and the girl behind the register remembered my name! Definitely appreciated being recognized as a return customer especially when so many people are in and out of there in a day. It's nice to be remembered.

How have I missed Crema Cafe?!?! Oh that's right, this wasn't around when I was in college and since… Read more »
This is a just a placeholder review for a list I made here http://www.yelp.com/li...
(the extra star is for the baked goods being pretty good ...)
I wanted to love Crema Cafe - really and truly. I went in a few times to try to grab a snack and a coffee - and every time something has gone amiss.
The service is very, very slow for a coffee shop that is in such a busy part of town. Once, I waited 30 minutes for a sandwich, during which time multiple people were working behind the counter, no one was in line ahead of me, and no one even bothered to start getting out the bread.
I'm sure I'll try Crema Cafe again. Hopefully they've worked out more of their logistical snags and they'll impress me on the next round.
Bring some cash (if you plan on spending less than $10) and an empty stomach and swagger up to the counter at Crema Cafe for some incredible eats. I've had the breakfast sandwich (on their homemade english muffin...mmm) and the chicken sandwich (served with a delightful artichoke aioli). As you can tell from the other reviews its difficult not to find something on the menu that you like. Case in point: a peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich.
Bring your computer and do some work, but be prepared for the possibility of waiting for a seat to open up. This place is good, and the secret is out!
Another vote for the sweet potato sandwich! I should hate this sandwich because it's got so many ingredients that I don't prefer (sprouts, sweet potato, wheat bread), but the whole really is a lot more than the sum of its parts here at Crema Cafe! And even for this omnivore, the vegetarian sweet potato sandwich really satisfied! The creaminess of the avocado, the tang of the apple, the out-of-worldness of the dressing/sauce...it's a recipe for :P***** Seriously.
There were about 4 people in line ahead of me, but I had to wait about 15 minutes for my sandwich. If I were seated with a cup of water and bread basket to hold me over, it would be alright. But standing there by the pick-up counter, dodging people going in and out of the bathroom, stymied the experience a bit.
But I love the price (sandwich + cookie + bottled water [less than sign] $10!), love the atmosphere and love that sandwich!
Tip: Credit card minimum $10.
I went here with a friend of mine who is a vegetarian and she said that the sweet potato sandwich was probably the best sandwich she's ever eaten.
What I usually get from this place is quiche and coffee. Quiche here is very good, coffee also. Set up is also cool.
One less star for having credit card minimum (I don't carry cash ever, so it's annoying... most stores take card even for a cup of coffee now a days, wth?) and also some of the employees are rude in a way that only very young people can be. Other than that, this place is very good for both food and atmosphere.
I went here a couple of times in the week that it opened - it was pleasant, calm, peaceful, with free and easy WiFi, with good mellow music in the background, and all around a nice place to study, read, or have coffee/lunch with someone.
Now, it's incredibly overcrowded, loud (not just people, the music!), chaotic, with WiFi that only works half the time, and all around headache inducing atmosphere.
True, Crema Cafe has a great decor, and nice intimate feel - but it's always at max capacity, making it difficult to get around, means withing in 3-4+ person long lines for the bathroom, means waiting 10-15 minutes for a basic, non-custom sandwich, and still not have a place to sit.
It's a great concept. It's incredibly popular. I'd recommend only coming at off-peak hours, which is the hour right after it opens, and the hour right before it closes.
This place is jumpin', but the coffee isn't amazing and it's hard to find a seat sometimes. The dessert food (pastries and whatnot) are really tasty, though.
Busy cafe in Harvard Square that serves excrllent espresso drinks. I enjoyed my soy cappuccino and banana-walnut-date bread. I felt a little hurried because there were many other patrons waiting for seats.
I am rounding up from 2.5 stars. I'll start with the fact that I had high hopes of this place after Yelp. I WANTED to like this place, kind of like I always wished I liked Sam Summer (just don't, sorry!). Anyways, it took close to 20 minutes from the moment I stepped foot into Crema until I left. I was expecting a wait, and don't mind one for a good meal, but this wasn't worth it. The girl behind the counter was flustered, but nice, and took my order: 1 sweet potato sandwich, 1 peanut butter honey and banana sandwich and 1 spinach artichoke chicken sandwich with a side of sweet potato chips, and a canelle.
I can't speak on personal taste of the chicken sandwich but it seemed just okay and not worth the price. I was excited to try the infamous sweet potato sandwich and I'm sorry to say I was not impressed. There wasn't enough on the sandwich to give it proper substance and I thought it was pretty bland. The wonderful items were the PB banana sandwich (although I can make that myself), the chips which were perfectly crisp, and the canelle which was moist and light.
As an endnote, I will give Crema another shot but will probably try a bfast sandwich or the rosemary goat cheese sandwich instead, and would definitely try more of the baked goods (all looked amazing).
Amazing. The roasted eggplant and tomato panini with homemade pesto? Heaven. Tomato bisque? Yum. Sweet Potato sammy? A wonderful surprise.
For lunch, I recommend sticking with their sandwiches, quiche and soups. The salads are pre-made and while you can get a handful of chicken or tuna for an extra $1.50, it's not really worth it to me. Free water available too! And outdoor seating.
This place gets crazy busy and packed during lunch hour, but no complaints here, that usually means the food is worth the wait!!
Bring cash. They don't like to run a card if purchase is less than $10.
Only con...peanut butter cupcake was a dud. Too much salt and baking powder. Yuck.
There are plenty of reasons to like this place. Let's start with the most important (for me): the coffee. It's good, not ohmygodthisisthebestever, but much better than average. It's not Simon's (just up Mass Ave, closer to Porter), but it is good. They actually grind the beans and press them into the cup instead of letting the machine do all of it. Oh, and they have tea. Good iced tea, can't say anything about their selection of teas for brewing.
The food: Better than the coffee. I've had most of the menu, but the often on menu off-menu lobster roll is by far the best. They make it a little different every time, but the best I ever had was with a heavy dose of tarragon. Amazing. Best lobster roll ever. If you're listening Crema, just make it with tarragon, seriously. Everyone else says the sweet potato sandwich is good--it is, it's a better option than every other meat eater's sandwich on the menu (except the lobster roll!).
The people watching: it's on Brattle St, and if you sit outside on a nice day you have a great view of everyone walking by. Or you can sit up on the second floor and look down on everybody. Oh, the second floor, it's great, too bad everyone stays there for five hours at a time.
Bottom line: go to Crema. And go back. Again. And Again.
creama cafe is home to the genius sandwich combination including sweet potato, apple, hummus, and avocado.
great for a casual lunch or snack.
It's can get busy here and the whole "food retrieval" system is a little complicated, but the sandwich I had (Crema Grilled Chicken, just the right amount of spicy and the cheesy-corn spread gave the whole thing a whole other level of awesome). The sweet potato chips are okay, not bad for an extra dollar. I had an iced latte that was pretty solid.
The decor makes the place because it's adorable to people watch if you sit on the balcony and look down on diners (and even out to the square). A cool experience, as long as you're not pressed for time and can have a leisurely lunch.
I visited Crema Cafe on two occassions.
I think the food is average. I love the decor and the location but as others have mentioned, the service is not that great. The area for food and drinks pick up is so small and it takes quite a bit of time even though they have a few people working behind the counter. I'll only go there if I have time to kill; not if i want to grab a coffee and run.
Yea, the food is good for a coffee shop and it's pretty creative stuff.... but the downstairs is organized TERRIBLY. There's no natural place to stand and wait for your drink/food, everyone is bumping into each other and no one knows what to do. The coffee's nice, but insanely overpriced, and honestly the crowd/ambience is really obnoxious.
Crema's really pretentious and, worst of all, just doesn't live up to what it clearly thinks of itself. That being said, if you need a cup of coffee, it's clean and reasonably quick.
Nice spot to people watch right in the thick of Harvard Square. If I lived in this area, I'd probably be a regular. Artistic decor, fast friendly service and I believe the coffee is fair-trade. I can say now that they make my favorite hot brewed drink, Earl Grey au lait with almond syrup! Soooo delicious, creamy and comforting. I usually don't have milk with my tea, but this beverage was sublime! I tasted my friend's Thai iced tea and it was well executed. Not too sweet. The other standout was the black cherry bread pudding. Have it with the sauce. Yu-uh-um!
This is definitely one of my favorite cafes around. They have great coffee, and even better sandwiches.
If you are a vegetarian, I highly recommend the sweet potato sandwich. It doesn't get much better than that...
Crema Cafe is a cute little place that reminds me of University Cafe in Palo Alto, CA but a bit but warmer, busier, and slower. My coffee took about 15 minutes to make and I particularly noted that their medium cup is probably the same size as their small - which was the biggest turn off for me. The food looks good and the crowd is pretty much polite educated professors/grad students. we sat inside at the beginning and it was super warm in there. Towards the end a table outside became available so we moved out. After I felt the breezy wind, I realized why people love this place so much.
Oh, how do I count the many reasons why I love this little place?
1. They have a variety of non-coffee drink options for people like me.
2. There are lots of tasty treats to choose from. Their quiches are always very tasty.
3. Nice decor. Dark wood and a very chill vibe. While this place is semi-small and can get crowded, you can usually grab a spot.
This is the cafe to go to in Harvard Square.
The cupcakes are rich and awesome. Sandwiches are good, hands down, best iced coffee I've had in the area.
yay! I'm a big fan. Echoing other people here really when i say that I love their ginger lemonade. Their pastries are also really yummy - butter croissants and pain au chocolat and good brioche (which aren't really brioche like, a bit more like panetone without the fruit though but are still yummy) and nice little bites like financiers and mararoons.
What I love though is the quiche. I am a fussy egg person - in fact have a bit of a love hate relationship and that is especially true for quiche, but their veggie quiches are really lovely I am getting addicted.
Again, as others have said, coffee is lovely and its great how they do cafetieres rather than just espresso based coffee, but their espresso is really great - perfect for taking out and sitting outside watching the world go by as if you are in France!
Only thing is I hate the no card policy for things under $10. That is really common in the UK, hadn't seen so much of it here and to be honest its a bit of a pain, especially if you are like me and hole up for a few hours, first having coffee and cake then lunch and a lemonade. Often I forget that I need cash for the second transaction too. Usually the cashier lets you pay by card, but I always feel somewhat reprimanded!!
A must try place!
I visited this café while it was too cold to sit outside and can only comment on the inside atmosphere. It was ridiculously overcrowded and exceptionally loud for a café (both in terms of music and the level of conversations). I can't see how this would be a desirable atmosphere for anyone looking for a café and would definitely not be worth waiting for a table. On the other hand, the decor and set-up of the interior was very pleasant so perhaps on a slower (and quieter) day, it would be a nice place to visit. I might also stop by on a warmer day to try out the outside seating area and sample the food menu.
If a place that serves coffee drink is open till 9PM does that mean they stop serving drinks at 8:30PM? Seems that way to me. I went in there around 8:30PM and they were cleaning up. The owner should make it clear to the general public when they stop making lattes and coffee drinks. They say they're open till 9PM that should mean they're able to make drinks that are on the menu before they close.
The people who worked there could give a fuck about customer service, they were practically kicking people out saying, "We're close..." The workers were more concerned about getting the hell out there before 9:20pm than anything.
From reading all the positive reviews, I was really excited to try this place and give it a 4-Star, but I just can't after my visit.
Thanks for your rudeness Crema Café.
This is based on the pretension of this place.
So I go on a super cold day just looking for a good latte to warm up.
I order a caramel latte and my boyfriend orders a mocha latte.
after 10 minutes, the barista informs me that they are out of caramel syrup and asks me if he can use caramel sauce instead.
Ok seriously? you want to use a crap load of the gunky caramel sauce to flavor my drink? Worst barista ever.
So I say 'ummm, no'
I figured since I already paid for a latte, I can't really change my drink altogether so I asked him 'What do you recommend?'
Blank unamused stare.
awkward 5 seconds...
so I ask him 'what flavors do you have to replace the caramel syrup?'
his response: chocolate
chocolate?!?
ughhh fine ok chocolate latte.
idiot.
It was the worst latte I have ever had.
And I hate him for it.
Also my boyfriend's mocha latte, which by the way is supposed to be sweet because it is made with chocolate, tasted absolutely bitter. Almost as though they ran out of chocolate as well and what was supposed be his chocolate powder was instead put it into my drink.
FAIL
Yum! Really good food and casual atmosphere. I enjoy hanging out there regularly.
Wow, this place was incredible! I cant believe I didnt try it sooner! I had a grilled cheese sandwich with ham and carmelized onions - delicious! (And shared the sweet potato sandwich - also really good) . The vibe is sooo nice, and the service is really friendly, and the pricing is excellent. Highly recommend this.
First I'll talk about the food (since it's the main positive), then I'll talk about the coffee.
I didn't actually eat at Crema, but BOY did I want to. The baked goods look delicious and fresh. The sandwich menu, however, was TRULY insane. All of the ingredients are listed on the chalkboard, and all of the combinations looked creative and delicious. Order a turkey sandwich here and you won't be getting your run-of-the-mill turkey/American/lettuce/tomato/mayo deal. You'll get something with avocado spread, or pepper spread, and some interesting vegetable component (sweet potato, less-common sprouts, etc.), and a higher-end cheese like boursin or gruyere just to name a couple. The menu, overall, looked inspired, and those eating looked very pleased with their large, exotic sammies.
What I DID get was an Iced Non-Fat Quintuple Mocha. (Yes, I love my caffeine.) Now, I'm an ex-barista (RIP Natural Bean!), so I can pretty clearly see what's right and what's wrong with their drinks. First of all, it's great that their standard is "two shots per small, three shots per medium, four shots per large"; at most cafes, it's one less, unless you ask, and then you have to pay. That makes for a stronger drink, rather than some milk with a splash of espresso.
The barista asked if I was sure about my order, which was actually a good idea. Sometimes people order an extra shot and don't realize what they're doing, then spend the rest of the day shaking. Points for being attentive.
I paid $5.30 for my drink. That's the most I've ever paid for that drink by at least $0.50. (Why so expensive? I don't even think it was organic.) I figured, hey, maybe it'll be worth it.
Whilst waiting for my drink, though, I didn't really know where to stand. The bar area was cramped and I was basically leaned up against a table where someone was trying to enjoy a sandwich, while people were trying to shimmy by each other. Not easy to move around in this place.
Also, they don't call out drink names as they come up on the bar; they only call out the name of the customer. (As in, they didn't say Iced Non-Fat Quintuple Mocha; they just said, "Shelly!") This sounds really picky, but the fact is, when you're a barista and you say EXACTLY what the drink is as you're putting it up on the bar, that shows the customer that you made it to their exact specifications; or, it gives them an opportunity to correct the order if you call it out wrong. I can't tell you how many times I called out, "Double-Medium Hazelnut Latte!" and had the customer say, "I thought that was supposed to be non-fat?" so that I got a chance to re-make it right away and give them what they wanted. It's a small point but ensures that everyone is satisfied before they walk out the door.
When I actually sipped my mocha... Ehhh. First of all, there were two pumps of mocha in it. That's not really enough for a large. I had to add splenda, which I've never done to a mocha. And the espresso itself... I dunno, with five shots, it should have tasted EXTREMELY strong and it just... didn't. (Maybe they missed the extra shot... The barista didn't really look like he was concentrating too hard... but I can't be sure; they didn't call it out!) It also had this oddly sour taste? Not of bad milk, but maybe of a poorly-pulled shot. Maybe they need to recalibrate their espresso machine?
I don't recommend the espresso drinks, and I didn't enjoy my time inside the store, but from what I saw of the menu, I WOULD recommend the sandwiches. And their non-espresso drinks looked pretty cool, too.
The wait for food, even when there are no orders behind or ahead of you, is way too long. The english muffins are little puffs of heaven, but it took a giggling, lackadaisical sandwich maker (better than the surly one I usually see at lunch) 10-15 minutes to toast one for me when the place was almost empty. Don't go here when starving.

SWEET POTATO SANDWICH!! My sweet lord. I am a vegetarian and love big, sloppy sandwiches. This… Read more »
This place is a logistical nightmare -- you have to stand and wait for your food right in the face of people who are trying to enjoy their lunch. And they were busy as hell when I was there, so the service was a bit slow. Finding a table was somewhat challenging.
But oh, man, what a lunch it is. Iggy's bread is far superior to When Pigs Fly bread, and it shows here when it's toasty and press-grilled to perfection. I had the chicken with artichoke and spinach. The optional sweet potato chips on the side are worth it. But, I ended up taking half my sandwich home as that was a lot. Good iced tea, too!
This is where you go to people watch and be watched. Having lived in France for a while, I love anything that reminds me of the French lifestyle. This is one of those places. Though it is often overly crowded, they offer a great selection of pastries that pair well (especially when dipped) with their drinks (a non coffee drinker myself, I've only tasted the hot chocolates, ciders, and lemonades, but they were all fantastic).
They have a cozy building with an upstairs perfect for viewing what goes on below. Each table have little flowers which make it beautiful. Whenever I want to study in a place with "background noise" (ie. noise you can't distinguish so it doesn't distract you, but provides enough background so you don't go crazy), I go here.
The only complaint I have is that their wi-fi seems to be perpetually out of service and they don't like credit card charges under $10, which for a non cash carrying person like me, can be unfortunate. But, go here without your lap top and enjoy!
My go-to place when meeting anyone for coffee these days. GOOD coffee + espresso drinks, good baked goods, and imo, a nice atmosphere -- though I like a little hustle/bustle in my cafes. Doesn't feel overly precious, nor fakely "vintage," nor Starbucks-y. It is what it is, and doesn't try to be anything else (I'm surprised that people think it feels pretenious -- not sure what it has pretensions towards...), which is, imo, a rare thing in Cambridge. Nice place for meeting people, and despite its location, and doesn't feel excessively touristy.
I recently moved away from Somervillle, and while it was a good change for me, I deeply miss living within walking distance of Crema.
This place is truly my ideal of a neighborhood cafe: great coffee (and tea), yummy treats to snack on, and pleasant laid-back atmosphere (although it does occasionally get crowded, it usually thins out fairly quickly) .
The feel of the place hits the sweet spot for me--not too hipster, not too upscale, not too trendy or studenty or corporate. They're clearly aiming for a Euro-cafe character, but they don't push it too far. I've been coming since the week they opened and it's been great to see them develop their own personality.
As for the food and drinks, they do the basics admirably using high-quality ingredients, but go beyond that by featuring new and interesting items that you probably won't find elsewhere. For me, nothing warms up a rainy fall evening like their Almond Earl Grey tea. I take it as a sign of good taste that they seem to stay away from cloying "candy" drinks (the Caramel-White Chocolate-Marshmallow-Latteccinos you'll find at some other places).
Side note: Kudos for always having at least a couple of vegetarian options, clearly marking which soups are veg., awesome vegan brownies, and soy milk options for drinks (standard these days, but still appreciated).
Overall, Crema seems like a place run by people who truly care about great coffee, quality food, and creating a welcoming space for people to meet, hang out, study, or just sit and contemplate life over a steaming mug of one's favorite drink. If they keep it up, I expect they'll be a Harvard Square institution for a long time to come.
Haven't tried the food, but the iced chai was delicious. More importantly, the atmosphere/decor was really neat, and it had lovely, outside seating. Great location too. Cool place for people watching, which is one of my favorite activities when sitting at a cafe / coffee shop.
