If you come by on the street and look casually, you might think that the Creekside Inn is a generic chain motel whose parking lot has slashers hidden in the shadows.  If so, you'd be wrong: this place is a winner!

I've stayed here twice, and I've liked it both times.  The people in the "lobby" area are competent and friendly.  The rooms are clean and quiet.  They were decorated with care and are well maintained.  The gym is pretty good; the coffee and pastries in the morning were very welcome!  I've heard good things about their happy hours, but I've never been around to witness them.

I used hotwire to book the room at this place.  I got stiffed by hotwire ($77 when their regular rate was 72.  The really good rate for this area made me question what I had gotten into.

- then the surprise - really nice room, really nice staff (I think his name was Richard?, way cool), free internet, coffee in the morning, etc.  I will be back, without using hotwire (note - it was listed as 3 stars on on hotwire for 77).

I've stayed here many times in the past year for work in the area and the Creekside is a great home away from home.

Free wine in the evening, a decent workout room, free wifi, quiet grounds, comfortable beds, and quality linens are all things I like about the place.

There is a convenience store on the grounds that has a great deli. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Complimentary town car service for drop off and pick up in the area.

Only thing I don't care for there is the low flow showerheads. The bathroom amenities are excellent, particularly the lip balm.

Great rates for an expensive area too.

the only reason why i'm giving this hotel/inn 4 stars is the fact that they give all guests complimentary wine mon-thurs. and we definitely took advantage of that! otherwise, it's a pretty standard hotel. all light bulbs were fluorescent energy-saving bulbs.. but because of that - they all started off really dim, and grew brighter over about 5 minutes time. the bathrooms are small and very low lit as well.. and bathrooms should be well lit. i'd like to knock another star off for the dirty courtyard bench seating. for an area to enjoy the wine and the surrounding nature, there's hardly a place to freaking sit.

there is free wireless internet if you have a laptop with you, and a computer hooked up in the lobby. free breakfast (pastries and coffee) in the lobby every morning from 630am to 930am as well.. and an on site laundry, 24hr gym and a pool.. but no jacuzzi. a connecting restaurant - cibo - also provides the free breakfast, as well as room service.

cibo in itself is a nice restaurant for the hotel to have.. probably nicer than the hotel itself. food's good but pricier than the rooms are worth.

remote controls in the rooms suck.. but all rooms have an ipod ihome alarm clock, so you can wake up to your music instead of some radio station. the suites with kitchens are awesome, as the tv's also have dvd players. other rooms don't have dvd players.

would i come back here again? sure... and only for the complimentary wine. :)

As I stay in hotels post-Yelp, I'm slowly developing a list of basic criteria:

1. free Internet - check
2. easy to find - check
3. nice staff - check
4. free bottled water - check

I'm sure the list will continue to grow.  However, there are a few things particular to Creekside worth mentioning.

1. The room is dark as all get out.  Could be the fact that the back is obscured by trees, and the lights are really dim because this is kind of a "green" hotel.
2. Following from number 1, you know how a lot of hotels now say that if you want to keep your towel, hang it up; otherwise, put it on the floor?  This is the one hotel I've been to lately (or ever) that actually does keep your towel if it's on the rack.
3. Housekeeping took my mom's shower cap (bah!), so she had to use the one provided by the hotel, which was really really small.
4. The toilet paper is really far away from, and behind, the toilet, making it really hard to reach.
5. The toilet seat moves around.
6. When I went to shower, after housekeeping cleaned the room, I found that the drain was stopped and there was a little bit of standing water in the tub.  I had to stick my hand in said standing water to unstop the drain.  Given, I was about to shower, but it was still kind of ew.
7. House coffee is actually pretty good.
8. I like the setting outside - lots of little tables and benches to sit and enjoy the outdoor feel.

So given all this, 3 stars I guess.

The Creekside Inn  is a charming 136 room hotel located in the heart of the Silicon Valley, 2 miles from downtown Palo Alto and a mile from Stanford University. The rooms and suites are  in a park-like, creekside setting. Yes, they actually have a creek running through the place. They have standard, superior and deluxe rooms, as well as suites with kitchen. The Creekside Inn is Palo Alto's only smoke free  Hotel (or at least that's how it's advertised. ) We have stayed in a variety of rooms here over the years.  Once you have been there you can fill out a card to be a member of the Creekside club and they supposedly have a basket of little snacks and drinks of your preference in your room when you get there.  The last couple of times we've stayed there, they have screwed up and not had a basket.  They did however make up for it in different ways.  Last week, the girl at the desk apologized and then gave us cards entitling us to a complete American style (anything on the menu) breakfast the next morning.  The restaurant there, Cibo has great breakfasts, so this seemed more than fair to me.  A couple of visits ago, when they forgot, they did upgrade us to a suite.  We were fine with that as well.

Complimentary Wireless Internet Access is available throughout the hotel rooms, patios, balconies, grounds and pool.   This is convenient I guess, but is not always such a good thing when you think you are on vacation, and your spouse just has to spend a few hours working.
