Dang! I can't believe I haven't written a review for Crazy Doughs yet! I have been a fan for 6 years, ever since I was a wee freshman at NU. I especially love their Sicilian style slices and my favorite flavor of all time is the Potato Bacon and Ranch. It's amazing and if they don't have it pre-made, I get a small one baked for me right then and there. A corner slice is perfection.
The other best part of CD is that they serve $4 PBR pitchers. Which is fantastic! We got in about 6 pitchers last night before they stopped serving at 10:30 pm. When the weather is nice they also have out-door seating. Don't think I've ever called for delivery. I also noticed that they're doing sandwiches now and I've heard the the bread bowl salads are pretty decent (I've never been able to bring myself to order one when there is excitingly delicious pizza to be had).
One star off because sometimes the staff can be a little surly, but it's not really a big deal. I mean order your pizza/beer and get out of the way. What? Okay, fine...5 stars it is!
Ugh, im easy to please. Set reasonable expectations. If my meal is going to take 25 minutes please don't tell me 10. In fact, if you lie-up, ill be ecstatic when you over-deliver and ill give you more stars.
Lucky for crazy dough's, they serve pizza which is almost never bad. So i liked the food despite the crazy dough wait.
I wish I was eating Crazy Doughs right now, instead I am sitting in class a few blocks away 'listening' to a crazy teacher talk about the social dynamics of corridors, stairs, and elevators. Anyway, I'm sitting here wishing I was eating a slice of potato bacon pizza. Or a slice of balsamic and mozzarella. Or nutty Tuscan pizza.
Their pizza slices are large and so damn good. The potatoes are sliced really thin allowing them to get a little crunch to them. Using balsamic that cooks down and gets sweeter is a clear understanding of ingredients and how it can be balanced with other flavors (the salty mozzarella). Crusts are soft yet crunchy, depending on where you bite.
If you are a fan of PBR, which I am not, you can enjoy it for $4 a pitcher. They do have other beers at 4-5 a bottle which in the back bay is not horrible but its not $4 a pitcher.
My only complaint is that some of the pine nuts on the Nutty Tuscan tend to burn. Also, the last time I was there I saw an employee drop a slice on the counter, cheese side down. He quickly grabbed it and went to put it back with the other available slices. Luckily he turned to another employee and asked her if he had to throw it out. She told him to throw it out (and probably thought 'fool'). You don't get to use the 5 second rule on food you serve! You can only do the in the privacy of your own home, if you so choose.
PS- their logo is horrible swill.....so the occasional burned pine nuts, employees with questions ethics and a bad logo take it down a star
Very expensive for pizza near college campuses. It's pretty good though.
We stopped into this place late one night to get food since not much else was open and the bf had been wanting to try it for a little while. Pizza was pretty good, but not great. There was a decent selection given the time of night and the pizza was not super expensive.
I would go back to this place for specialty pizzas and more creative flavors. For a plain cheese cheap slice, I would hit up the pizza place next door.
The pizza here is pretty good. Huge slices, thin crust, lots of different toppings for those who like to pile stuff on their pizza. I go for something simple, usually marguerita or Hawaiian or something, and it is consistently good. But it is all about $4 pitchers of PBR. The thing that keeps it from five stars is that, despite the beers, it's still pretty much a fast food place, so it isn't a great place to hang out for too long. They do have one TV though.
This place gets an extra star for creativity. There's always an interesting concoction of pizza you'll want to try (I saw something with ground beef, potatoes and sauce that left the fat kid in me screaming for some). The pizza is a little doughy for me, but I still really like it. Also, $1 PBRs or $4 pitchers? It's no wonder I saw a group of dudes just hanging for the afternoon over their pitchers. The last thing I had there was a calzone and while it wasn't as big as I was told (and it took a lot longer than I was told), it was still pretty good. Good food, good value.
You can't beat this place for pre-fenway drinks. $4 pitchers of PBR, about 3 blocks from the park, and always plenty of seats - I can't believe more people don't do this before a game. You have to order food with your beer, and I'd recommend the garlic cheesy bread - it comes with 2 sauces (bbq & ranch) and is delightfully salty and cheesy- the slices of cheese aren't bad but also aren't memorable.
work orders pizza from here and its the only pizza I eat within this state after I had a fight with Pizzaria Regina. Yes I'm one of those snobby pizza New Yorkers.
I've been in crazy dough before and it's quick and delicious. However, tonight I ordered a large pizza to be delivered to my place about 1 mile away. It took them an HOUR and HALF to come. To top it off, it was barely warm. I will never have them deliver me pizza again.
I first started going to Crazy Dough's because I earned points with Midwest Airlines for every purchase.. but now I'm a faithful customer.
I've gone in for lunch and ordered pies for parties. The food has always come out in record time.. and has always been eaten in record time. Their popularity is obviously because of their inventive toppings that definitely make pizza a "meal". I'm a fan of the Tuscan stuff (both the tomato basil and the nutty version).. the reuben is interesting when the pastrami isn't too dry.. portabello and goat cheese.. hmm.. come to think of it.. I usually just point to whatever looks good and never really ask what I'm eating! hah.. My one peeve is the temperature of the pizza. Sometimes it's lukewarm and sometimes it just cools off way too fast. I would suggest getting one slice at a time (if you're not getting some sort of combo) so that you can focus. Although, minus the pizzas that have meat that can dry quickly.. I think good pizza.. really good pizza.. can be eaten at all temperatures.
The people that work here are always nice and despite it being hopping with college students and Red Sox fans (during the season), I've always been able to find a seat. Oh.. and like so many have mentioned.. beers and pitchers are on the very cheap side for the area.
And some trivia for you.. this is the location of Jennie W's Ligaya tribute in my video. hehe..Bloop!
If there is a pregame heaven, this is what it looks like.
$4 pitchers of beer
cheap slices of cheesy hot pizza
a friendly staff that smiles upon flip cup and other drinking games
flat screen tv's constantly playing sports
Do I even need to continue? This is my go to spot for Back Bay pregaming- grab me a pitcher and save me a seat, I'll see ya there.
$5 for 2 huge slices of pizza and a soda. That's all I need to say.
...but I'll keep going. What a cool place. Quick and easy (and tasty!) pizza. Big slices with a thin crust. $4 pitchers of beer. Sports on all the time.
It's open until 2am on Friday and Saturday. Hit this place up after spending the night at a Boylston bar for a late-night snack.
well the best thing about this place is the 4 dollar PBR pitchers. i think that is probably the best value in the city. In terms of food, we ordered a pepperoni and sausage pizza that was good, but not amazing! they have tvs for the sox games, and a younger crowd. Its also open until 2am, so a great place to go to late night!
This is the best pizza I have ever had. I get something new every time and its always perfect. The creative salads in dough bowls, the amazing signature pies, and even just the simple 2 slice and a soda for $5 deal are all exceptional. Great staff too.
Eat in or delivery this place is great. I order this pizza almost every week. This is not your standard pizza shoppe, they have all kinds of great combinations to choose from. $6 pitchers of beer!
I'd heard varying reports about Crazy Dough's, which is why it took me so long to stop in (in spite of being just around the corner from my office).
My first impression upon walking in at 2:00 on a Tuesday was, "This is where the Berklee students go when it rains." The tiny restaurant was swarming with students hanging out, drinking beer and studying (or recovering from a hang over, it's hard to tell).
Once I made it through the chaos, my second impression was, "It's nothing special." They have a wide selection of pizza by the slice (not just cheese & pepperoni), but it didn't look terribly appetizing.
So I ordered a calzone - buffalo chicken and bacon. My experience with calzones has been limited to Your-Local-Town House of Pizza calzones. I've never been a big fan - they're big, hot & dry - but they fill you up with room for leftovers, and I had a hankering for buffalo chicken.
It took about 20 minutes to come out of the oven, so to I'd recommend anyone getting takeout that you call ahead. However, service was very friendly, and once I found a spot to sit I didn't mind waiting. They have big TVs with the news and sports on the wall, and a couple smaller TVs with trivia and news. I also got to watch a Berklee student try (and fail) to buy a pitcher of beer for his obviously underage girlfriend.
I got my calzone, and let me tell you, it smelled amazing. When I got back to my office and opened it up, I was pleasantly surprised with what I found. The dough was soft, yet firm and well cooked (not doughy) and sprinkled with cheese and spices. Inside was a gloriously gooey mess of chicken, bacon, cheese and spices. I noticed that the cheese was actually of a fairly high quality - not that gross cheese product you find a most places.
I scarfed it down, and it tasted as good as it looked. I'll definitely be back to Crazy Dough's - maybe I'll give that pizza a try next time.
OMFG! What do you MEAN I haven't reviewed this place?!
i.. used.. to.. LOVE this place. Seriously. You have no clue. There's a reason I gained weight when I moved to Boston.. okay.. some of it was because I moved here in the winter but.. seriously.. I ATE A LOT OF CRAZY DOUGHS. oh my god, so good. so delicious. so quick and creative. So.. worth the cash!
Can I move to Back Bay again? Thanks
To the bad reviews: I personally believe that you should always try a place twice before you start reviewing. You may believe that going once is good enough, but people have bad days and things happen and you should really always just try a place twice. If you only try it once, you may have gotten the mediocre dish on the menu or came half an hour before closing or were just misinformed about what you were ordering. Basically, unless something is truly horrifying, then you should really try it again. The place may be a fave.
So with that in mind, I love Crazy Dough's and it's a little pricier for a slice than other places, but it's truly filling when it comes to their Sicilian slices. They are mounted with the best toppings and I am always wowed by the creativity of this place. Who the heck thought up the toppings to put on these pizzas?! Wow!
My all time favorite is the potato cheese bacon...I think that's what it's called. I have never called it that. I always call it the baked potato pizza and the kid behind the counter always knows what I'm talking about. People who say that the sauces that Crazy Dough's tops their pizza with makes the pizza soggy: I completely disagree. I always ask them to reheat my pizza and I've eaten it with crunchy bites every time.
This hot hunk (bf) and I went last night and they were out of my all time fave. I looked from selection to selection and I didn't know what to get, but I must say that three slices really stood out to me. One was a thing that looked like beef and broccoli. Awesome! I can get the goodness of Crazy Dough's oven-baked pizza with the yummy Chinese take-out inspired beef and broccoli, topped with what looked like a teriyaki sauce?! Whoa! It's like I'm having two dishes in one! How convenient! Second slice was a buffalo chicken slice, but what actually made me go wow was the huge chunks of blue cheese that was scattered all around. Wow.
But the one that stood out the most: the Chipotle Chicken pizza. And that was definitely the one I got. Wow, it was SPICY. There were huge chipotles everywhere with the ribs in tact. Whoa! (Note to all: the heat is in the ribs of the peppers, not the seeds. The seeds just carry the spiciness cuz they're touching the ribs, but all in all, the seeds do not carry heat whatsoever). Anyhow, every time I chomped down on one of those peppers, it was so good and painful at the same time...kind of like..uh...rough sex? Sorry, I don't know what else to compare it to. It's like...so painful that it's good? Yeah, sorry about all that.
Anyhow, it's definitely a must try and not really one of those places that you should go out of your way for, but definitely a place that if you live close to can pull you in and not let go.
Like twidle di and twidel dum, pizza and beer goes together.
$4 a pitcher! And they will be nice to you, they will take their (other pizza places) copouns too.
Concept : Fantastic
Execution : Superb
Service: Adequate
You may see some new inventions of Domino's innovative,. Crazy Dough is always a several steps ahead when it comes to "Crazy" topping.
I think it'd be such a waist if you order a slice of plain cheese. If you order that, just walk a few doors down toward Boylston to get a slice from Little Stevie's.
You can get most out of this place by ordering very unconventional toppings such as BBQ chicken, some veggie delights, whatever the other stuff I can't recall what but crazy & yummy stuff.
They do serve beers, so you can socialize there you are at the pub and have various pizzas at the same time!
Golden!
had the balsamic/ricotta/basil thin slice and a corner-square-slice of the bacon potato pizza, which was thicker and crispy in texture.
they were aight.
there is a great variety of pizzas-by-the-slice to choose from.. at least 10 varieties on display to choose from. i wanted to get a cheeseburger bacon slice but they didn't have any.
flatscreen tvs, showing hockey.
cheap beer.
i guess i'd have to come back to this place to find out what the hype is about.
eh.

I do love the Crazy Dough's Pizza. I don't like their prices, and sometimes I don't like their attitude. But, their pizzas are so good I don't tend to mind. Although it is wicked annoying when you've been ordering from them for months, you call them up and they say they don't deliver to your area. I don't like having to talk to managers, but man, I wanted my pizza, and you are an idiot. I also wish they'd invest in a computer system so I could just give them my number and voila! all my info shows up. I shouldn't have to spell out my easy, easy street name everytime I call.
Anyway- here's what you should order- the nutty tuscan. Word of warning: if you don't eat the meat and you order this for your veggies and a meat pizza for the animal eaters then make sure you order two. The meat eaters will totally grub off your pizza and you won't get as much. This is a fact. It has happened to me more than once. Similar experiences have occurred with the eggplant parmesan pizza.
I've always wanted to try the nacho pizza. But I'm afraid. And sometimes I wish I ate meat so I could have the Reuben pizza. I heart sauerkraut. I heart pizza. Could be heaven.
Be adventurous. Don't be afraid to order simply by pointing at the one that looks coolest.
Lots of options, changing menu. I'd like to recommend the reuben and nacho pizzas.
This place is great if you want pizza but don't want "pizza"
There's one major flaw with pizza places of this nature. Too much variety!? I would normally say variety being essential to a good meal but for a pizza place serving numerous customers it can become a problem.
Crazy Dough's pizza looks fantastic...when it just came out of the oven, otherwise it is just an old reheated slice. With the broad number of slices available the one you want will almost never be fresh from the oven.
I am sure ordering a pie would guarantee a fresh delicious pizza however. Also their reheated slices are pretty solid, and still enjoyable, but unfortunately never as good as they sound or look. Despite its drawbacks Crazy Dough's is still a top pizza place if you want something a little more creative than pepperoni, and even if you don't.
5 stars for $4 PBR pitchers and flat panel TVs.
The pizza has extraordinary potential but always looks and tastes as if it's been sitting on the counter for hours waiting to be reheated.
I don't get the big deal about Crazy Dough's.
They've got all these signs everywhere announcing all their accolades, winning some kinda best pizza ever award twice or something, but their pepperoni is just really, really plain pizza with a really, really thin crust.
Maybe their strength is sold on their custom flavors of pizza which do look really tasty and interesting.
That said, they have a lot of advantages. Great location, they take Berklee card, their AMAZING two slices and a drink for $5 deal, nice layout, nice TVs, direct service, and although it's not for me, big pitchers of cheap beer and sports, etc.
All in all a good place that won't leave you feeling that short-changed.
I have to say they have been a mixed bag, my work orders from here all the time, and it's nearly always delicious, however going in person is a different story, they never heat the pizza up long enough, and if your taking one slice home, they just give you another paper plate to cover it, in the winter by the time i got home (only 2 blocks away) it was like it had never been in the oven...
although the 4 dollar pitchers of PBR are a great deal, you need to get food to drink (even a cookie), and their bar shuts down at 10:30 or 10:45, and they have nice tvs to watch a game
If you end up here at dinner time (which I always do), the pizza has nearly always been sitting out for a while, and is therefore less than delicious. There are a lot of really unique slices and the laid-back atmosphere makes this a nice place to meet up with friends, but the pizza just isn't that great.
In Crazy Dough's defense, I have ordered fresh pies for delivery which makes an enormous (and positive) difference in the taste. There's a pretty wide drink selection and I happen to be a big fan of the salads in a pizza dough bowl. They have a lot of flavor and all-in-all are a lot of fun to eat. However, if you order the ceasar salad, I would recommend not getting croutons, cause that's a lot of bread!
Despite it's short comings, my boyfriend is a big fan of this place and I end up coming here pretty often and thinking it's pretty good... but that's about all.
Alot of unique pizzas that challenge your willingness to try strange combinations on top of your pies.
And, as Sean L said, you can't beat $4 Pabst pitchers!
At least I can use my boyfriend's Husky Dining Dollars at this pizza parlor, which doesn't seem to serve as much pizza as it serves bread loaded with anything they feel like.
I actually opted for a "salad bowl" because none of the pizza attracted my attention. While I am not a huge pizza-lover in the first place, I'm really not a fan of eating ham, beef, or any other dead animal (except fish).
I had a few vegetarian options to choose from, but looking at all the pizza behind the glass made me feel sick inside. There seemed to be an awful lot of cheese and ... stuff ... sitting on top of that bread, and it scared me, to be honest.
The salad bowl was great though! It's a fun, new idea: You eat the salad which is inside a bowl made of pizza dough. Then, when you've eaten about half of your lettuce, you fold up the dough and eat the rest like a sandwich.
Yum!
This place is pretty good, they have very creative types of pizza and the calzone I've had is good also.
They serve beer which is always a plus and they are open pretty late. I've been there a few times to eat and ordered for delivery once. The delivery took forever to come so that was a bit annoying.
I would have to be crazy to order from here ever again.
I've always heard rave reviews about their pizza, so I looked forward to trying it out! Unfortunatly, I didn't even get that far...my order came complete with HAIR.
I called the restaurant to inform them and all they could say is "that's gross"-well, DUH.
Since apparently the kitchen closed earlier than advertised, they added my name to their "log" so I can call back for a free pizza-this is one call I will NOT be making.
I wish my experience lived up to those of the other Yelpers...sadly, I was grossed out and somewhat irritated.
Thier pizzas look great but I opted for the Tuscan sandwich instead without cheese. It was pretty good, but needed a bit more pesto sauce on it.
Service is sloooooowwww.
But kind of nice to be able to grab a slice of pizza and a beer before class.
I'm not sure why people claim the food here is cheap, because if you compare to other pizza places it is not. Yeah the beer is though. However, it is really worth it if you are in the mood for some awesome pizza. They have a great variety of gourmet pizzas. Seriously work your way to trying them all, they each have their own tastes.
Very interesting pizza. Potato on pizza? Pretty neat, tho I haven't tried it yet. Crust isn't so bad either. Not bad. Not bad.
Awesome variety of pizza. Regular or Sicilian style. But there are so much lined up on the counter.....you can't have just one, or you're left standing there, twitching your lip, eyes darting back and forth trying to decide on one.
OHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
thisplace is the shizzle.
they have some amazing calzones... and somre really fun pizzas.
the nacho pizza is fun when you are drunk. but what isnt.
i think one time i had a calzone witch cheeseburger in it?
not sure i had the drunchies.....
its those 4 dollar pitchers of pbr!!!!
i even if the pizzasucked i wouldstill love it because of the cheap pitchers! woot
but the pizza is great.
The place is a little shifty, just like its precarious placement on the 2nd floor of The Garage where I don't see how it can be handicapped accessible or fire escapable. But still. I go. Often. That $4 special for 2 slices of cheese and a small pop meets is a great dinner-on-the-dash/dinner-on-a-dime.
The pie ain't bad here. There is nothing CRA-ZAY about the dough. It's not dry or overly oily. The sauce is delicious and the cheese is never overdone. It's tasty, not pasty.
In addition to the cheese special, I have had the eggplant pizza and it was delicious. One slice was enough -- and good thing, because the specialty toppings can be pricey.
PBR drafts for $1? that alone should make the Berklee folk flock here. The slice variety is impressive too, although primarily meat-focused on my visit last week. In a city of overall mediocre pizza, this place does it pretty good and relatively cheaply.
Every time I come here I am always the youngest person in the place. Two plasma screen TV's, $4 pitchers of PBR and good pizza at a location sandwiched between multiple colleges creates a breeding ground for kids getting drunk and watching the Red Sox on the cheap. Last time I was here, there were five frat boys playing quarters (yes the drinking game) while watching the Sox. I come here for the pizza but being 28, this place makes me feel like an old man.
Order the special slices of the day - constantly rotating - or check out the awesome photos of the pizza online. It's impossible not to order.
