We've eaten here 3 times. The restaurant is a wonderful old colonial style setting. Wood floors, large fireplaces, rather quiet and soothing. Tables are a good distance apart so you don't feel like you are sharing your dinner and conversation with strangers.
We were greeted immediately and seating quickly at each visit.
The wait staff was very professional, knowledgeable, friendly and attentive.
They offered a variety of wonderful sweet breads and delicious relishes before the meal arrived. All the seafood dishes we ordered were very tasty and portions were a good size. The crab cakes were the best I've ever had!
Our dessert was delicious and large enough for two to share.
If you love seafood and want a lovely evening out this place won't disappoint you. -

We went there yesterday to celebrate a friend's birthday.
I'm amazed that this place isn't bigger, because this is probably one of the best seafood places in the Richmond area. It's got a lot of unique dishes and styles of cooking that are a delightful surprise, and everything, from the bread to the drinks to the waiter himself was a delight.
if there's anything bad I can say about this place is that it's not easy for people who aren't locals to find, and that's a shame - this place really deserves your business! -

Of course---wanted to try something new in Richmond, and yelp led me to Crab Louie's. I had heard about it, and read about it----but this was the first time I tried it. Location is right off of 60, and did not get too far inside the restaurant. Looked different/nice/and comfortable. What sold me on this place was 'customer service'. Hostess allowed us to stay and eat in the bar area. When we walked in---Brandy who I assume was the bartender---asked us if we wanted to watch football. Within two minutes, she set up the perfect table and area for us to eat and watch football. She is amazing, and went out of her way to make the experience great.
We got the 'big appetizer'. Crab Dip was wonderful---best I have had at a restaurant. We were excited about the bread, but rolls were not warm enough or enough flavor. Mushroom and Oysters were great.
We followed up with two bowls of soup. Clam Chowder was really good, I was excited about But/Squash Crab Soup--- but it did not wow me, still good.
Dessert was ok. Overall---great service, great location, good food, and made for a great Lunch. -

Great place for a quality dinner, good atmosphere for romatic dinner or with friends. Always had good seafood here and she crab soup!
It stays crowded on Fri and Sat nights .. so go early if you wanna get seated without a wait. -

I grew up about 5 minutes from here. Though I haven't lived in Richmond for 10 years now, Crab Louie's is one place that I don't stop missing. The atmosphere is perfect for a nice seafood dinner out; in fact it feels more like a beach restaurant than one you'd find in suburban Richmond.
The She Crab Soup is the best I've tasted; it is not to be missed. My usual main course of choice is the Crab au Gratin. It may not be on the menu anymore, but if you ask they'll usually hook you up. The house made breads are fantastic as well.
This is probably the best restaurant in Midlothian. -

the place was crowded but the wait wasnt long. -

You know this is a good place if I drove 25 minutes out of my way to eat here. If you're looking for a trendy spot, this is not it. While the clientele is mostly over 30, or maybe even over 40, it did not detract my full enjoyment. If you're looking for solid seafood choices, you've come to the right place.
This is also the top rated Seafood restaurant in the Richmond, VA area in CitySearch (rating of 9.3).
Their homemade complimentary sweetbreads are very very good - the zucchini bread was my favorite - nice and soft with zucchini julienned strips in it too!
I was too full to try, but their banana foster dessert looks amazing too. Next time.. -

Situated in the 250 year-old house, the restaurant is beautiful. I'm a huge fan of prosciutto, so I went with the Scallops ala Ceil (prosciutto and Asiago cheese). My friend had the crab cakes; little filler, mostly crab. Both dishes are incredible.
Creme Brulee for desert. Sweetbreads for an app. Tarragon honey mustard dressing.
I never got the Butternut Crab Bisque that I ordered. I had more than enough food, so it wasn't a big deal. -

Went in with high hopes, but left disappointed. Could find the crab in the She-Crab soup and the fried oysters tasted like they were frozen out of a box.

I used to work at Crab Louie's a long time ago and I still go back as much as possible to get my seafood fix. The menu changes here and there, but there's always some staples to keep me coming back. And if you consider all the bread and everything the give you with your meal, the price is on par with every other restaurant and the food is absolutely better.
And they've been able to keep the "old house" feel while updating the inside over the years. -

After 36 years in and out of Richmond I finally went today at lunch to this 200 year old place.
I had a lunch combination of scallops, shrimp, 2 fish selections, a small salmon cake, and a vegetable (spinach). ($14.95). I had a cup of the She-Crab soup as an appetizer, and it was delicious. ($2.95, I believe)
Overall the dining experience was very good, the service was excellent and we experienced no problems at all. The bread given to us was very tasty! Cornbread and some banana bread and a couple of other choices.
I give the restaurant, based on this one lunch visit, an "A-OK" of three stars. Maybe I will boost my rating up to 4 stars after a dinner visit. -

This was my first trip to Crab Louie's. It has a nice atmosphere, very "Colonial Williamsburg" with pine plank floors and fireplaces at each end of the dining room and etched glass throughout. We went with another couple on a Friday night without reservations, but we only had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. We had drinks at the small bar. At our table our waiter brought us a basket of sweetbreads and we ordered appetizers. The coconut shrimp were excellent. I ordered jambalaya and was not disappointed. Smoky andouille sausage, chicken and shrimp over ginger jasmine rice. Great flavors and just the right amount of heat, but they did overwhelm the rice of which I could have used a bit more. We skipped dessert, feeling perfectly stuffed. Prices are good, service was excellent with an attentive waiter and no wait between courses. We'll be back.

We came here for dinner. The staff was really nice. I love the little basket of sweet breads they bring around to the table. Everything we ordered was really tasty. Great food. I highly recomend the crab soup and the seafood au gratin. My wife had the filet and it was wonderful. we finished off with the peanut butter pie which i think you probably shouldn't leave without trying. it's pricey, so we'll be back but probably for special occasions.

Good seafood restaurant in quaint/historic-y setting. I have eaten here multiple times as it is my in-law's favorite "family gathering" restaurant and it has always been good. The atmosphere is a little stodgy and the food can be pretty heavy - more creamy and cheese-based sauces than lighter, Mediterranean-style seafood.

We went while ok vacation after reading a fellow yelper's review and it was great! If you like seafood (and creative cocktails or wines along with it) don't miss it.

I love the ambience of this place, not to mention the food is delicious! The last time I was there I was disappointed because they had run out of their sweet breads, but everything else was still good. The She Crab Soup is really yummy, and I usually get one of the fish specials. The crab cakes are great and have lots of meat and not much filler.
