I've been here a couple other times for PT, and decided to return for a series of PT treatments for my latest medical issue involving my frozen shoulder.
You can always get an appointment with the various PTs on staff. Your medical history is electronically noted so it's very seamless for anyone to follow your case.
Everyone is very professional, and is interested in your welfare and getting you healthy.
The PT who does your evaluation also provides his/her business card, and you can alway contact the PT via email or phone call if you've got an question about what was said or done. Plus your at home exercises can be emailed to you or if you prefer, walk away with some.
But what I love best is the great billing system. Handled inhouse, and accurate. That was the key point for me after a not so nice experience elsewhere. -

After tearing my ACL, MCL and a partial in my meniscus during a skiing accident in January, I was referred to CPMC for physical therapy for pre-op work as well as post-op work. My orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Akizuki, recommended Julie Ann and I am SO glad he did. Julie Ann is a gem!! Her PTA, Mike K. was AWESOME, too! This duo has helped my knee to become almost back to normal (given that I'm only 5 months post-op). Their genuine desire to get me fired up to build strength, agility, balance and an overall good attitude to get back in shape and doing was I was doing before, is exactly what I needed and expected from PT.
The front desk staff is just as fantastic as they all got to know me by name -- shows you how frequent I was going, huh?
All in all, I cannot recommend CPMC enough for their outpatient physical therapy. -

Woot! I'm FIXED!!!!
I injured myself from working out with P90x videos (curse you P90x!!). There was a weird sensation from my right glut down the side of my thigh to the front of my shin. It got to the point where I coudln't even sleep at night because it was so uncomfortable. The pain even kicks in with just a minimal task (ie. standing over the sink while brushing my teeth, or standing at the check out line). Julie Ann came in and immediately had me stop P90x (I was bummed) and said that I needed major work on my core...more specifically my glute.
Six sessions later, I'm a brand new person! I can run, do long walks, and as for P90x? It's a partial commitment with modified movements...for now. I alternate from core exercises ("prescribed" by Julie Ann) to running/walking/P90x.
Thanks CPMC OPT! -

As I started telling people about my back problems, I quickly realized that it was just like telling someone I had a crazy aunt: everyone had a similar story to tell. But even worse than having a crazy aunt, everyone thinks they have the miracle cure for back issues, and would recommend everything from their favorite PT, to an amazing chiropractor, to certain exercises to do, and even referrals to a spine specialist or massage therapists or acupuncturists. What should you do? Don't listen to any of them, and get your doctor to refer you to this CPMC physical therapy facility.
I worked with Susan Yokoro and Serena Llamera at this facility, and they were both just amazing. They spent the full time with me in every session (once a week), always 1 on 1, to diagnose the pain and worked with me to come up with a daily exercise routine at home. And at every weekly session, we would discuss what happened the previous week, make adjustments (either weaker or stronger of a routine) and go again. In addition, they were always available via phone or email, and would call back very quickly if I left them a message, and would take the time over the phone to answer any additional questions I may have (since it's natural to have questions after you get home).
Susan and Serena's patience, professionalism, and kindness just shines through at every session, and I can't begin to explain how wonderful they were and how thankful I am to have had their help. Over the course of over 12 weeks, they helped me build my strength back up and manage my back pain, and at the end, helped me develop a long term plan to get back to running and slowly start swinging a golf club again. In addition to developing a "physical" plan, they were extremely helpful with the "mental" side of the recovery process, by helping to manage my expectations and helped me understand that recovery will take time. It sounds obvious, but when you're trying hard to make a recovery, a voice of reason is an important part of making a great recovery, and they provided exactly that.
Even though I live in the east bay now, I will still make the trek over to SF to this facility for the great care and service this team provides. Thank you! -

After I got my brand new hip, I was sent to Physical therapy at the Clay Street Center. My therapist Julie Ann as wonderful - very knowledgeable and creative with my exercises and the classes she had me attend were a great help in strengthening my leg and hip. All the people were wonderfully attentive to my needs and -with tongue in cheek - almost can't wait to have my other him done! Well, I can wait but anyone needing physical therapy shouldn't wait - check out the Clay Street campus.

I have been going to the CPMC Physical Therapy location on California and have been thoroughly impressed by their staff. Monica is my PT and she is very clear in her explanation of how the body works, why I am experiencing pain and what I can do to see results. She is also sensible about how long it will take to heal which is something I need to hear. She does not make me come every week and she also gives me great advice that fit my lifestyle. They are very helpful in meeting calendar needs and DO call if there is a cancellation. It is not a chore to go to therapy and I have found this location to be an amazing resource.

In July I fell and broke my ankle during a shopping excursion to Saks in Union Square. (as a side bar - I did manage to hobble to Saks to get the Channel nail polish I wanted for a scheduled manicure the next day, needless to say, that didn't happen). When I got home, I contacted my insurance carrier to verify my ER coverage, went to the ER got the bad news about my broken ankle and so my physical therapy journey with CPMC and Colleen Birmingham began.
After being seen by the ER on a Friday night (also a positive experience), I was referred to a doctor. This was the only bad experience I had with the CPMC staff. The doctor was a specialist with hands and couldn't see me until the Weds after. Which in hindsight was a blessing. I called my primary care physician and they referred me to Dr. Taylor Smith. After my visit on Tuesday, he referred me to CPMC Outpatient Physical Therapy.
With my first phone call to their wonderful front desk staff I knew I was in good hands. I was treated with great care and tenderness. What a wonderfully professional team. And DID they fix me up - scheduling my first appointment with Colleen Birmingham. Getting me into the pool physical therapy program with Rachel. They were all amazing to work with. Colleen has been both a tough taskmaster, but with a gentle touch. Because of her I was encouraged to keep coming back for the needed therapy over the next few months.
Yesterday I had my final appointment. As I was leaving the building I said my final goodbyes to the great front desk staff and Colleen. I was actually almost in tears saying goodbye to all of them. Once I walked outside to the night air, the tears freely flowed. They had all been so supportive and encouraging. I know I will miss their encouragement and support. -

Referred by a nurse practitioner at CPMC (very difficult to see a doctor these days) for back pain, I had to wait two weeks to get an appointment. By that time I was largely out of pain but went ahead with the therapy as I wanted to learn what exercises I might do to either avoid back pain flair-ups or possibly how to relieve pain during a flair-up. On my first appointment I requested the receptionist/scheduler verify my insurance coverage and let me know specifically what my out-of-pocket cost would be. She supposedly checked and then told me that their fees would be completely covered by my insurance - no out-of-pocket. A month after I completed the therapy sessions I received a bill for $400. Of course, they told me to take it up with my insurance carrier... A previous reviewer made note of their very high billing rates - mine were $414 for each 45 min. session. The therapists were OK - I've had better. I'm not going back.

Here is my experience with these guys. After being referred by my PCP to them for a physical therapy for my back pain, I called their appointment line yesterday afternoon. There is no one to answer, so I left a voice mail. No calls back yesterday or this morning. I called them again. On my fourth attempt there is a live person who told me that their first appointment for physical therapy is first week of June! So for a patient in excruciating pain, first appointment is four weeks out!. When I requested to see if there could be any cancellations and requested the name of the person who answered the phone, the gentleman said "I am done here, I gotta go" and hung up. I am serious!
I do not know the quality of their care, but I can tell you that their customer service is non-existent. -

Recently I had my first ever injury that required a Physical Therapist. I had a major sprain (not outright tear) of MCL ligament of my right knee. In the 3-4 weeks between my injury, my doctor visits, and my first therapist visit, my legs were in real bad shape: my injured leg had a pronounced limp and a tricky pain, and my non-injured leg was getting really strained as well.
Then I met Susan (PT) and Serena (PT Assistant) at CPMC Pacific Heights =D
Susan, my main contact 4x, was encouraging, informative, professional, and eager to set goals and get me to those goals each and every visit I had to CPMC. Of course, I got homework ~ stretches and other exercises to help me stablilize and strengthen my knees, hips, muscles, balance, etc.
Serena was equally helpful, and though I only met with her 2x she provided me with invaluable suggestions regarding feet and hip health that would contribute to lasting knee recovery.
What else can I say without gushing? The facility is spacious and bright (renovated nicely!), and I managed to get appointments asap. Finally, I will be taking their pre-snow-season conditioning class before I go snowboarding this winter, as an additional way to prevent future injuries.
Thank you Susan and Serena! -

I went to the Total Body Fitness Class at CPMC Physical Therapy. The facility was nice, clean, and had state of the art equipment. The Total Body Fitness class or TBF they call it was a great variety to my regular workout of tennis and climbing. I enjoyed the various stations and physical therapy presence. Each station focused on a different muscle that worked on increasing my strength, flexibility or both. It really was a "total body workout!" Michelle taught my class and she was so knowledgeable and available for any questions I had. I have already recommended it to one of my climbing friends.

My experience at CPMC was great from the start. I broke my kneecap in 2 peices in Dec 2009 and started PT in Feb with Devon, Serena and Julieanne 2x a week. My knee now bends to 120 degrees and I'm confident it will bend more since I have exercises to keep on doing. Once a week I went to the pool class, it is wonderful. They also have ongoing classe open to the public for a small fee. All are taught by the therapists who know how your body works. I'm thinking of going. They care at CPM and I'm grateful I got to go here.

Referred here by my primary care for back pain. While the therapist and staff were friendly, after 6 or more sessions my back pain got a LOT worse. I was referred to a surgeon at that point who said I shouldn't have been doing PT until some other interventions were done, and then he told me to go to Presidio PT because he didn't have much faith in CPMC's program. Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover Presidio, and my back's gotten better... but if you're not getting results, don't wait long before you get a second opinion.

Natalie Wong is a highly skilled, kind and wise physical therapist. I was injured in a car accident, which exacerbated a prior pain and difficulty i had. Through inquiry and questioning, Natalie was able to get to the root of what is happening with me and prescribed some pt exercises that have helped immensely. I would not hesitate to recommend Natalie and the fine PT and PT assistants at CPMC Outpatient PT to help with your PT assessment and needs. Her kindness has also been very soothing to someone in pain like myself.

Over the past 11 years I have had 4 knee surgeries, which means 4 trips through PT, this has been the best physical therapy experience yet!!
I just finished 5 months of rehab for a carticel implant...big rehab! Susan and Serena helped me every step of the way. They were always smart, supportive and caring and knew how to push me when I thought I couldn't do something, but they knew I could. The facility is easily accesible, clean and has a good variety of equipment! The staff is always friendly and welcomming. I loved the pool classes and also my sessions on the pilates reformer.
I always felt that my take home exercises were explained thoroughly and were easy to do at home.
I cannot say enough great things about CPMC, if you have a choice about where to go for physical therapy, go to CPMC!! -

After tearing my left ACL playing softball back in April, my doctors office recommended this location for my post surgery physical therapy in June. Being in my late 40's, i never had to experience any type break or tear of any sort in the past to my body, as this is all new and i felt somewhat apprehensive to say the least. Working with Colleen a week and a half after my surgery was such a relief, as she was caring with her approach to my injury and at the same time i felt she had a terrific grasp from her experience and training to what steps needed to be taken as my physical therapy progressed for another 2 months. Of course i had to stick to the exercises i was given by Colleen and Serena. Its been 6 months since the surgery which included 2 months of physical therapy with them, and i really can't thank them enough for their dedication and what they do to help people mend. The same goes for the rest of the people at this location. Professional, friendly, and sincere. I've almost forgot what its like to run around, but when my left knee gets back 100% and i can get back on the field again for the first time, i'll probably shed a tear for Colleen and the rest of team, that I was lucky enough to have helping me to recovery after my ACL surgery .

This is my first Yelp review...I just cannot say enough great things about the Outpatient Physical Therapy clinic at the Pacific Campus of CPMC and had to write to share my experiences! I was referred to outpatient PT for some pre-op strengthening before my ACL reconstruction and continued after surgery as well.
Not only is this a beautiful, new, clean, and well-kept PT clinic, but all of the therapists are so friendly and say hello even if I was not their patient and had never worked with them. The scheduling process was easy and because my schedule was flexible, I was able to fill a cancellation spot. I worked primarily with Jon, but also had the opportunity to work with Devon, Michelle, and Colleen and they all were VERY knowledgeable. Another selling point is the 1-to-1 45-minute appointments with skilled and licensed PTs (no treatment is done by aides). During each of my PT sessions, there was a great mix of other patients in the gym at the same time, from the teenage or adult athletes and tri-athletes, to runners, avid golfers, and older adults recovering from some sort of orthopedic surgery or back problem. Despite all the other patients there, I feel that care was taken to respect my privacy and attend to my own therapy needs. As I continue in my recovery, I am looking forward to taking their Pilates and Total Body Fitness classes.
I am VERY happy with my experience at the Pacific Heights Campus (CPMC) Outpatient Physical Therapists as they all helped me through my surgery and healing process (both physically and mentally). I would not be doing so well without them (esp. Jon)! Thanks! -

I have been going to the new Total Body Fitness classes CPMC offers for the past couple months now, and I love the class! Michelle and Mike give you a great workout every time. Cardio, strength, agility...I swear every muscle in my body is sore the next day. The space is really awesome and better than any gym - they have so much great/fun equipment, so the exercises don't get old. An added perk for a germiphobe like myself is that you can tell the facility is sanitary and clean. I highly recommend the class to anyone who is looking for a great workout!

I had this weird mystery shoulder injury which the doc said "you need physical therapy!" I met with Caroline who was finishing up her internship, and she was amazing, very personable, really knew exactly how to determine where the pain was coming from. I'm only sad that after 2 sessions her internship ended and I will someone new next week. If you are in PacHeights and need a PT, this is a great place!

Beware of these guys. They will not reveal their pricing and then bill out at $450 - $500/HR for basic Physical Therapy (think stretching & basic cable work you do at gym). The staff is competent and friendly but their predatory billing practices are to be avoided at all costs. Not only that but when confronted with their shady billing practices they admit the rates are very high. It is a borderline scam. You have been warned.

Just finished my PT sessions at CPMC with Julie M.When I first went to PT I could barely bend my knee or walk normally for that matter.I needed answers to a lot questions for which none of the doctors gave me.
Julie M put me as ease and gave me answers to the problems that I had.She listened to what I had to say and worked with me to resolve my injury.
If ever in need of PT I highly reccomend CPMC and Julie M.

After seriously injuring my knee in a bike accident way back in November, having surgery in December, and then slowly recuperating at home, I began seeing Julie Ann a CPMC for rehabilitation. I was very nervous and scared-- I couldn't bend my knee past 75 degrees, and I had been on crutches for 7 weeks. Everything hurt and thinking about someone forcing my knee to bend in a way it just didn't want to was not at all exciting. Julie Ann, however, put me at ease immediately. On my first visit, she gently noted what (minimal) flexibility I had and she patiently gave me exercises to complete before I saw her again. She finished the appt with a brief massage-- she was very gentle and I could see that she has true compassion for those in pain. Now, only 1 month after starting PT, I can bend my knee to 123 degrees, I can bear weight, I use a cane, and I am slowly recovering from a horrible ordeal. Thank you everyone at CPMC-- from the receptionists to Julie Ann, Mike, and Tommy. Thank you!

I got referred to physical therapy because of my neck/shoulder pain. To my surprise, Julie Ann McCarthy (and her assistants, Serena and Mike) focused on my posture and core strengthening and stretching/relaxing exercises -- which were the source of my problems. She patiently answered all my questions and helped me understand the goal was to attack the root cause of my issues and not do anything that would aggravate my condition. Not only did she help improve my neck/shoulder problems, but also addressed my wrist, back, foot, and uneven shoulder issues... none of which were my original goals when going into therapy. In a matter of a few months, my pain has significantly decreased and I feel like a new person! On top of that, when I get stressed and overworked, I now know how to manage and prevent my problems from re-occurring. This has been a life-changing experience and no words can describe how thankful I am.

Hurt myself boarding in Tahoe and found this Physical Therapy Clinic. I've been to PT in the past elsewhere and this place is above and beyond all the rest - by far! The therapists are very professional, fun, and clearly knowledgeable and experienced. I was surprised by how fast I recovered with their help. The gym is awesome, the people are great. I highly recommend them!
