What a relief to NOT be staying in San Francisco. My search for places to stay relatively close to SFO and San Francisco along a transit line in a safe neighborhood brought up Coxhead House. This place is awesome. I expected to run into Basil Rathbone or Myrna Loy, the house had such a classic movie feeling. The room was great, the proprietors doting, breakfast tasty, the neighborhood safe and the house charming. I highly recommend it and will stay there again if I have business in the SF Bay Area.

This place was a disappointment. Here are the highlights:

I sent 2 emails ahead of time, requesting an early check in time, as my friend would be coming from Japan and would be tired, and making sure there would be 2 beds in the room. No response.

When we arrived at 3:45 p.m., we were told we would need to wait for an hour for the room to be ready. When the room was finally ready, there was only 1 bed.  The proprieter seemed surprised when I requested a 2nd bed, which he hurridly assembled while we waited longer. He was not particularly welcoming.

The room is very large, but there are no comfortble chairs to relax in. Only 2 dining room chairs. The ugly fireplace had a bunch of ashes in it and an ugly handwritten sign on it.

The bathroom had 1 glass in, although there were 2 guests. There were plenty of mediocre and mis-matched towels. A cheap plastic shower curtain.

Bed linens were so thin you could read a newspaper through them; I noticed at check out that my pillow case had a dried blood stain on it from a previous visitor.

The breakfast consisted of 1) lukewarm coffee in a pitcher 2) plate of fresh berries 3) Juice 4) Three TINY THIN OAT CAKES -about 3 " x 3 " - kind of like pancakes, but dry as a bone. Syrup was provided but no jam and no butter. THAT WAS THE ENTIRE FULL BREAKFAST. My Japanese friend and I couldn't believe it and made alternative breakfast plans for the next 2 days. The innkeeper and his wife did not speak to us much. When They did, it was only to talk about their children.

There is a garden and lawn in the front but you can't hang out there because there are no benches or chairs. There is a table and chairs in the back but it is unsightly, with the owners' junk all around.

When we left after 3 nights, the owner barely noted our departure, did not thank us for our stay or say bon voyage or anything.

Also, the place is surrounded by apartment buildings. The view from one of the windows in our room was of a bunch of trash in the next door neighbor's back yard.

My husband and I stayed here for our 1st wedding anniversary.  Since we were headed for SF but had to be in San Mateo early Sunday morning, we thought we'd stay close by.
Glad we found the Coxhead.  It was really convenient in terms of location - it's in a residential part of northern San Mateo and the place has great history.  Breakfast was wonderful, too.
We didn't really feel very "welcome," though, by the owners, and we had to walk through the drawing room, the dining room and part of the kitchen to get to our bathroom, so that was a bit inconvenient.
If I stayed there again, I would choose a different room!

I stayed in the Angel Porch room and the "detached bathroom" described on the website requires you to walk through the living room and the kitchen which is extremely inconvenient. There was a fly buzzing around all night and when I woke up there was a spider on my suitcase. The bed cover and pillows looked old and dusty. I could have excused the bathroom walk but the insect and feeling that it wasn't clean was unacceptable
