4 reviews for Cowper Inn
We stayed in the Victorian house of Cowper Inn in room 26. While the room is spacious and has a small alcove room with a single bed and the main room with the full bed, the inn itself is old and dusty and not cheap. (We paid a total of $184). Also it was very stuffy in the area with the large bed with no air conditioning with a loud noisy fan to cool the room.
Also we were trying to check in at 3 pm (check in can start at 2 pm) but we got a sign that said out to lunch. Why would you go on your errand or lunch when people are going to check in?
Anyway our friends were staying in the craftsman house next door and it was much much better - it actually was cooler more well kept, cleaner. It was like heaven and the other place. They even had soft short robes were as the Victorian looked liked something out of a scary movie.
At least they had good chocolate chip cookies and Aveda products.
If you stay here, make sure you stay in main house - the craftsman. I will not stay here again.
If you enjoy lumpy, urine soaked mattresses, broken televisions, inefficient staff who screw up your reservation and a consistently late continental breakfast that consists of boring coffee, stale bread and old grapefruits PLUS you enjoy paying through the nose, then this is the place for you! The charm of the craftsmen-style decor can not make up for the lack of efficiency and deteriorating rooms with broken windows and heaters, etc.
The location is great but is if really worth it?

What a dreadful experience! The staff is scatter-brained and it's painful to watch women acting that stupid. Maybe they don't pay them well but in this economy you would think that staff would want to do their best. Messed reservations. Terrible continental breakfast that was always late. Bedding smelled strange as if it hadn't been washed properly or a fragrance had been applied too strongly. Are they trying to mask other odors? Broken windows and screens. Terribly overpriced. I couldn't cancel my reservation because they will charge your account anyway once you've made the reservation. The location is good but other hotels in the area have good locations, too.
The Cowper Inn is a cute restored house that sits just a couple of blocks away from downtown Palo Alto. It is surrounded by beautiful trees and has a couple of porches to relax on. This is a great location for people who want to walk too downtown and want a more intimate setting than the big corporate hotels in town.
