One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Thank you Cowboys & Angels for bringing Michelle Snyder back!!!
Michelle started cutting my hair several years ago at C&A. I know she had a great opportunity to move to New York and I was happy for her but sad for me. But, she's come home to us again and I'm thrilled that she's really back home at C&A. If I'd married a sugar daddy or won the lottery, I would have followed her to New York!
I trust Michelle implicitly and never bring in photos of what I'd like her to do. I just tell her to do whatever she wants and I've never been disappointed, not once! Today was no exception! (FYI, I have fine, naturally wavy, color treated hair & I'm not a wizard with the blow dryer. I got Michelle's advice on the best curling iron to buy... Hot Tools at about $30.)
This is the same Michelle that was at di Pietro Todd for a brief period this year. Contrary to the information they are giving out over the phone, Michelle hasn't moved to L.A. or N.Y. You can get a great cut in Union Square and then go shopping, an added bonus ;) She's the best stylist I've ever found. She's also a truly genuine person who is always warm and friendly.
Since she hasn't been back in San Francisco for that long, you should be able to schedule an appointment quickly. I've had some really great haircuts in San Francisco and I have other stylists I would happily recommend. But, Michelle has a special place in my heart & don't have one negative comment to say about her. Her cuts are great and they last longer too. I hope you'll consider giving her a try. :)
Now, back to the salon itself... Floor to ceiling windows so there's great light. You always get a great shampoo... thank you Shannon for such a nice head & neck massage today! The front desk staff is friendly and helpful, the assistants are great and there's always new and interesting art work on the walls.
C&A is even offering a $25 discount to Yelpers right now... yet another great reason to give them a try!
I've been seeing Rory at Cowboys and Angels since 2001. I primarily give her my 5 star rating!
Let me ask this... have you had haircuts (cheap or expensive), and it looks great for the first week, but as the 2nd/3rd week comes along, your hair looks like sh*t? Well, my hair cuts with Rory can last over a month, and it's still looking great!
I have Asian hair, and typically like getting my hair cut with a razor. Over the years, she's learned how my hair grows, and knows what fits my hair. I barely have to say a word when I see her. She knows exactly what to do.
I also go back and forth between short and long hair styles. She's able to help me during those growth periods, where I would have given up growing out my hair, and shaven it all off. There are no awkward hair stages. With that said, I'll pay $$$.
I give the salon $$$, but definitely worth the price. Rory knows her stuff, listens to her clients, and is always a good time talking chat stew during my cut. :)
Overall, everyone is the salon is great - friendly, courteous and helpful.
I had a wonderful haircut a few years back by a student at C&A and I went back recently for a highlight. My hair is naturally blonde but gets a little darker in the winter when I'm not in the sun so I like to get a highlight once or twice a year. Unfortunately, I can't stomach $150 for highlights so I go to students at high end salons.
This time I saw Bobby. He is awesome; he did an amazing job. I basically gave him no direction at all and he made my hair look gorgeous. Plus, it only cost me $30 for super high quality, perfect, multicolor highlights. Even my mom was freaking out about them and she used to have this crazy highlight man fly down from new york to do her hair. He may be hard to get since he's in the last stage of his training but I highly recommend him once he's a full-fledged stylist also.

Emily is an amazing colorist at Cowboys and Angeles. She turned my black asian hair into platinum blonde in two sessions only. Now i'm a blonde asian! i love it!! Can't wait for her to turn my boyfriend blonde too! yay :o)
Tokyo is such a good hair stylist too. he gave me a realli cute pixie hair cut. i can't wait to see these two amazing people again :o)
exspensive but if u have the money its worth it and alot of eye candy , hot hairstylist i wouldnt mind taking some of these girls home
I'm a part-time model, hair model, that is! Hair Modeling is a process but totally worth it especially if you're a broke college student like myself. My cut was $15 total including a banging blow out!
First, you need to come in on a Thursday evening between 5-7. You will be assigned an apprentice and together you will decide what kind of cut/color will work. Second, book an appt. The actual cut took 2 hrs so if your are pressed for time, then this situation may not be ideal.
I am so pleased with my haircut. I have really curly, big, frizzy hair. And Meile was able to thin it out really well. I have lots of layers and no longer have triangle head! I would recommend coming here to anyone with curly hair. It is really difficult to find someone who knows what they are doing. This place has got it down.
Bobby for color and Shannon for cut, they are students, they are awesome.
My hair is really difficult to cut for a lot of reasons. My mother was an Italian (southern) English mix and my dad was a full bloodied Puerto Rican. Both have hair with their own Kink that they passed onto me. For most of my life I've kept a tightly cropped hair cut because the effort to manage it seemed impossible.
When I moved to SF I decided to take a chance and let it grow. For 6 months I basically hid in my apartment until my short short hair was long enough to start styling. I trained myself in the wonders of the flat iron. I shopped finishing cream and oil products.
I tried a few hair stylist at a couple of salons suggested by random friends and although got decent cuts, never felt like I was ever amazed.
One night at a bar a person I had just met randomly asked me where I got my hair cut. I was presently in between stylists and she quickly recommended Cowboys and Angels.
I checked out the website and was curious, but shelved the idea because of the price point.
A few months later I finally broke down and tried it out.
Now, the complex nature of my hair can be a terrifying experience for some stylists.
It looks easy until you get it wet, At this point my straight hair turns into tight curls. Also, it looks like a normal thickness, but it is in fact THICK and full and there's a lot more hair than you would think.
I've now been to Jess at C&A twice and I could not be happier. She fully understands how to work with my more ethnic hair and it's complexities. She takes her time and her tailoring is so precise and perfect. And in addition to that she is extremely adorable, sweet, and friendly.
At today's cut (which was long overdue: Sorry Jess, I'll come more often) I brought her an image from a fashion magazine of a cut that I really liked. She was able to interpret that along with our discussion and give me the best haircut I've ever had.
Also have to give props to the cute red head Bobby who gave me the best shampoo job.
If you're in the market for a salon, try out C&A.
MASHA for cut and KATIE for blond highlights. I am picky about my hair - these folks are great! They have experienced suggestions, and also listen very closely to what you are requesting - and work with you to execute it! I am middle-aged and my daughter is a teenager. All of the staff are friendly, helpful, and not snooty.
Marie gave me the protein relaxer a week ago today and I finally have my dream hair! I have very bleached, longish wavy hair, so the last 2 to 3 inched are what I call frizzle frazzled. Sarah suggested I see Marie, and though I was apprehensive about putting any sort of "relaxer" on my compromised hair I went to see Marie. She said that after a few days some of my natural wave would come back, which it has, but without looking frizzy or fried. I would recommend this for anyone who is frustrated trying to style their own hair or people who just want to be able to roll out of bed, brush their hair and go. As instructed I waited until tonight to wash my hair and my frizzy wavy hair is drying flat against my back with hints of my natural wave. Thanks Marie!!!

Rory is a gem! She's cute and chatty too! I have curly hair that *no one* manages to cut right. Also love the shampoo. As long as I live in San Francisco I'll be getting my hair cut here!
I had another amazing cut with Tracy! I'm pretty low key, wash & go kinda gal with shoulder length wavy hair and a low budget. After cutting my own hair a few times I realized how horrible my layers looked! Tracy's cut is worth every penny and lasts for months. Every layer and wave is enhanced and stays where it supposed to - without even using any products. Love it!

When I lived in Hawaii, I would thank my hairstylist by bringing him a papaya from the tree in my backyard. As there is a severe lack of papaya trees in San Francisco, I turn to yelp to give thanks and praise to the salon responsible for every good hair day I've had over the past three years.
Where color is concerned, my first accolade goes to Sarah. She has meticulously perfected my previously drab, box-dyed hair. She is isangelous, and will work until any concerns have been alleviated.
As for the stylists, I have worked with Courtney, Tim, and Maile. They are ever accepting of my near tomentose arrivals, and always manage to transform my callet-like state into the envy of any philocomal connoisseur.
Thank you Cowboys and Angels. You are amazing.
Go see Rory--she ROCKS! That is all. :)
I grew up with bangs. (or a fringe as they say in Wales)
Thick heavy ones, which my mom insisted on cutting. And crooked at that.
And i mean crooked.
They weren't just "eh" kinda crooked. My bangs were appalling. They were jagged, sharp in some parts, and then rounded in others. It was if Harold from Harold and the Purple Crayon (http://www.modojo.com/...) just drew his waxy lavender crayon in huge crazy swoops across the front of my hair - and my mom then cut it.
I hated those bangs. Especially because my ballet teacher always remarked on how messy they were - sticking out in tufts from a light pink elastic headband. Especially compared to all of the "hair pulled back off the face girls" in the class who knew how to pirouette perfectly/
I couldn't have been happier, when years later my mom finally decided to stop cutting my hair and let me choose my own shape. The first thing I did was eliminate the bangs.
It was free-ing. You could see my forehead. My eyes. My eyebrows. And it was just in time for late elementary and middle school greasy long stringy hair angst.
But 17 years later here i am getting bangs again.
And loving it.
Sophisticated straight ones. Fluffy ones that graze my face lightly - instead of a crooked sweaty dirty mess. David - Cowboys and Angels hair extraordinaire - has changed my hair for forever. He took out my long familiar hanging red locks- and pumped shape and edge into them.
I feel different. Artsy. And bohemian.
I feel like putting the Duffy "Rockferry" album on and dancing.
PS: This place is not cheap. Maybe one of my pricier haircuts. A free bang trim though.
PPS: Expect to have one of the best shampoos of your life here. Complete with soothing neck and head massage. And if you go to David - not only will you be looking fashionable and chic with your new do' - but you'll also be charmed for life, by his contagious passion for hair and people)
Micheal gives great color!
I love his blond highlight techniques and he even corrected some of the old color I had that didn't look quite right. Plus, he is super funny & really cute.
What else do you need?
Absolute best salon in the Bay Area!
Nicole Kreps is the best stylist I have been to and the only person that I can give 100% complete trust to in doing my hair! I can tell her the look I'm going for, or a picture of what I would like, and she will give me her opinion and I end up with an amazing haircut.
The salon itself is amazing - lots of natural light and art on the wall. Everyone is friendly and the head massage is fantastic.
This place is pretty expensive. But very much worth it! =)
I *heart* Brandy at Cowboy's & Angels. She is the first and only person to cut my hair in such a way that I got a dozen compliments the next day at work. And the cut grew out well. It still looked like a cut well after it shouldn't have!
This is a long overdue thumbs-up and thank you in public for Brandy and C&A! I've been coming here for almost two years, and now that I don't work in the city anymore, I still make the trek up for my hair's sake :)
Seriously, Michael Madalinski is a genius! I am *super* picky when it comes to my hair - I know what I want & like. Part of it is probably because I've been highlighting and coloring my hair since I was 12, so naturally, I have a lot of experience with hair dressers - and from everywhere from Denver to Chicago to Arlington/DC to SF. I've also colored my hair myself in the past. I went through my rebel days when I was 13/14 and had bleach blonde hair (Pamela Anderson style), so I know what it takes to lift color and make it white/ash blonde, not golden/yellow blonde or brassy. (I've also done fuschia and turquoise, but those stories are for another day.) And of course once I wanted to put the pigment back in my hair and go from bleached blonde to natural again, I had to sample a lot of great colorists in Colorado. So the point is, I know a fair bit about hair, and know that finding a colorist who knows what they're doing is extremely important.
As I said in my previous review, I was ecstatic to already have a recommendation for hair color upon moving to SF - and it was Michael. I've now been going to Michael for 2 years, and even though I've done more or less the same thing on the basic level, I have asked for subtle nuances each visit. Typically I do 3 colors - a darker brown, a middle color, and a bright white blonde. I play around with the middle color and have done honey/warmer blonde to a darker ash blonde (like today). I also am specific about foil placement - sometimes I do it more chunky, but today I did thinner foils. I've also done an all over color/tint on the hair that wasn't in the foils, to get my hair back to its natural color, just with highlights. But the key thing to note here is that it's been very subtle the different things I've asked for each visit, and every visit, Michael does *exactly* what I ask for. A standard hair stylist that doesn't have as much experience as / isn't as knowledgeable as Michael, would have done the same thing for me on each visit. But because Michael is so amazing with color, he's listened to me and my subtle nuanced requests, and has done just what I wanted - every time. It's amazing, really.
Well, on today's visit, I think we found my favorite style of all! We did the 3 colors: a darker brown (really a dark blonde, but to me it looks more brunette - again, Michael's the one with the true color knowledge, not me), a medium/light brown (as the middle color), and a bright white blonde. I specifically requested thinner foil placement, especially around my face - and I got just that - LOVE it! I also asked to have all ash/cooler tones, and to get the golden tones out of my hair (from the last visit with the honey/warmer blonde). Michael selected all colors on the cooler/ashier side, and then applied a toner at the end.
My hair came out more beautiful than ever, and I couldn't be more happy! Michael is fabulous!

I've been going to C&A for years and I will NEVER go anywhere else. Emily (color) and David (cut) are both AMAZING!!! They are fun, super chill, and always do a great job. They know what works for your hair and make you look gorgeous no matter how bad your hair looks when you walk in! Plus, the salon has a great city vibe and really cool art on display. You can't beat it. Make sure you book with Emily and David, the other stylists there are good but no one comes close to these two :)
This review update is for a cut from Jess. This is my second time at C&A. My first experience ended with a result I hadn't EXACTLY had in mind, but the cut was good and she (Jean) was super helpful so I gave it 4 stars anyway.
This time I came armed with a photo of the style I wanted. Unfortunately I'd have to say that from this first experience with Jess - I wasn't completely satisfied. The end product wasn't exactly what I had in mind, and I had to make a few suggestions along the way. Towards the end of the 1.5 hour cut, I could sense that she probably had an appointment right after, and wanted to get it done with. So despite my dissatisfaction (I was hoping for something more dramatic), being the timid Asian I am, I kept quiet, thanked her, paid, tipped, and left.
4 days passed. I still wasn't satisfied.
So I talked to a girlfriend and she recommended calling C&A and making an appointment to fix my hair. After a restless night of sleep, I called the next day, explained my situation, and an appointment was made. I made sure to clarify the cost of the "touch-up", and thank god - it was free.
So I come in feeling a little anxious, a little uncomfortable and even a little embarrassed. Why? I really don't know. When I was finally greeted by Jess, it was helpful that she was completely okay with re-touching my hair to style it exactly how I wanted.
The end product? It was PERFECT. Okay, not PERFECT, but perfect to a point where after showering and minimal blowdry - my hair still sits perfectly.
So just FYI to those timid, not-so-satisfied customers of C&A - know that they DO offer free touch-ups and future free fringe trims in between cuts (as mentioned in some reviews already). This is honestly the only salon I've been to since abruptly ending my cutting-hair-myself phase, and although the first two times weren't exactly what I had in mind, I still give C&A 4 stars for the quality of the cuts, quality of the product they use (Bumble Bumble), and the wide variety of styles they can do for you.

Rory is the best. Been going to her for a ridiculously long time. I don't do color (yet), just cut and style, but I've gotten compliments all over the world for haircuts she's given me. Also, having great hair is a lot cheaper than Botox and can make you feel really good about yourself, you know? The salon also works to get great people to do the front desk and the hairwashing. You will be treated like a queen (or king), even if, like me, you make less moolah than many of the customers. If you have only one expensive indulgence, this should be it.
If you want a mullet haircut, please come here. I was trying to grow out my hair for so long and it was a point that I needed a haircut. I came to this salon based on all the great yelp reviews. I told her that I want to grow out my hair and I just wanted to get a trim and maybe some texturing to make it not so heavy.
In the process, she convinced me to get a bang and then proceeded to cut my hair into a mullet.
Worse, when I called the next day to tell them that I am unhappy with my haircut, they tell me that they don't have anything until next week. So, I decided to go to another salon to fix my mullet. However, I had to cut my precious hair a lot shorter - there goes all those months of trying to grow out my hair....
OMG, don't do it.
I chose this place based on Yelp reviews and received the worst mullet-esque hair cut ever (which would have been fine in 2003 when that was somewhat stylish).
After two weeks of dealing with this monstrosity, I flew back to NYC to get my hair fixed at the Bumble and Bumble (uptown). MY NYC stylist listened to my story and then asked, "by any chance was it XXX who cut your hair."
It just so happened she had lived in SF and has fixed his mistakes before.
BIG AVOID.
See Sarah! I love this place. Sarah just fixed my awful box dye job (what? we're in a recession.) and now my hair looks b-e-a-utiful again. Not only does it look great but it's not all smelly like chemicals from the color. It smells nice, like conditioner, which is a huge plus. I hate leaving the salon and having everyone within a 5 block radius know that I get my hair colored. I'm super picky about hair stuff and she just did a really great job. She asked questions about what I wanted and then.. get this... LISTENED to my answers. I mean how rare is that? Thanks lady! I'll definitely be back!
I strayed from my regular stylist to try Cowboys and Angels and have had a mixed experience: on the one hand, the new stylist who had previously worked at Bumble & Bumble (last fall) who cut my hair did a phenomenal job, but on the other, she treated me rudely. Evidently, she did not last the four weeks for me to return for a bang trim. I can't recall the name of my colorist, but though she made my hair a lovely blonde shade, she left me with a rather hapless assistant who washes hair like an animal groomer. I'm rather disappointed with the entire experience; one would expect more from a salon that charges these prices.
Michael's the BOMB! If you want fabulous blonde highlights ~ he is the only person to go to in SF. I absolutely love it here. Before my Vegas trip in July, I paid a visit to Michael and he worked his magic and made my dark roots shine with honey blonde highlights.
I could have given him kisses cause he made my hair so beautiful I almost cried! I still get compliments. Ladies - get ready to drop some cash because you are so worth it. Trust me woman, after a visit here you will look so absolutely stunning you will stop men in their tracks.
Nice looking salon. Clean. Have had my hair cut by David and he's really good. Tried another stylist when he was away and thought I could save a bit of $ and she was terrible. Charged $80 to butcher my hair. We agreed that she would cut it to just beneath the shoulders and layer it for movement and do some face-framing layers. She cut it into a super short bob style and then started hacking away at my thin hair with thinning shears instead of taking time to cut proper layers. One side is shorter than the other and she attempted to make the bob longer in the front than in the back, but with thin hair that style just doesn't work. I will never go back to her.
Also had my hair colored there. I told the stylist what I wanted and she gave me something completely different. She made it more like my natural color (which I hate and told her that when she suggested it).
I just had to write a review....because I am so dang happy!!! Marie (who has been coloring my hair for years and is amazing) gave me a Brazilian Blow out and it is FANTASTIC! My hair has some curl and a ton of frizz and after having the Brazilian Blow Out, I can get out of the shower and not do anything. It dries without frizz and with the perfect amount of body and shine. I'm a mom and I seem to have no time to deal with my hair...now, it looks like I spend an hour on it by letting it air dry (with not one drop of product!). Like I said, I'm super happy! Thanks Marie!!

So I REALLY like Cowboys and Angels and all, and I love the art vibe and I've been getting my haircut there ever since I loved to SF two years ago....BUT....the real reason I was there was Courtney....
And ALAS...Courtney has moved on to a new location on Fell and Laguna in Hayes Valley. AND I love it....mostly I just love her. She's so adorable with her candy tattoos and bubbly self!
Anyways...I just wanted to let her clients know where she's at! Because if you've gotten your haircut by courtney you know WHY you need to follow her! She makes me pretty! DUH!
Check COURTNEY out at:

Emily ROCKED my hair. Not only is she super cool and fun, she's incredibly talented and color-corrected my hair to the right shade. I'm already getting compliments!
Plus, the salon is for city folks who are chill and normal. If you're looking for a place that's hoity-toity with attitude - this isn't the place for you.
Definintely going back!
My famed colorist, Michael, who I've forced my friends to go to despite the high prices at C&A... was voted #1 colorist in SF by Allure magazine just out last month.
HE ROCKS MY WORLD.

Things to know about Cowboys and Angels: everyone is tattoed (which makes me sound like such a hick for noting it, because after all, we are in the big city, but I'm not edgy enough to not find this surprising), their receptionists always seem like they have far more important things to be doing than answering your phone call or checking you in, their artwork is erratic, and KATIE CASEY IS A COLOR GODDESS.
I have been getting my hair highlighted for years (I'm a big cheater and started to attack it when it began to de-blonde itself post-middle school). My mother, a victim of my grandmother whose haircutting philosophy sounds similar Jessica T's experience, swore that I would never have bad hair and packed me off to the best salons (yes, my mother is also a goddess). So I when I moved to the Bay I tried a few high end places-that-will-not-be-named and was consistently disappointed, to the point that I commuted back home to Santa Barbara to get my hair done for over a year. This caused more frequent visits with the fam than I really cared to support, so I struck out again and found Katie (via the lovely ladies at Mercer in PA - THANK YOU).
Katie is amazing - thin as a waif, really talkative and down to earth, and a magician of color. No one believes that I color my hair, and I only go in every eight plus weeks and you STILL can't tell, it grows out that well. And though she really should, I don't get charged extra for treating her like my bi-monthly therapist, a fee I would gladly pay since I think her services are actually a GREAT deal for what you get.
Emily rocks! She is an awesome colorist!
Nicole is amazing and gives me the greatest cut every time I see her. I was referred here by a friend when I moved to SF a couple years ago after a bad haircut from a not-so-experienced stylist. I'm can't even explain how happy I've been with my experiences here. I absolutely love Cowboys and Angels and recommend this salon to anyone and everyone looking for a fantastic salon. Nothing but the best....
COLE IS AMAZING!!! I have longish hair that I'm trying to get to the seriously LONG point and every time I go in she manages to erase all of my split ends without noticeably reducing the length! I have no idea how she does it but she's a definite godsend.
I also went to Katie once for color and she was fantastic as well.
Katie is a gem. A color genius. There should be an exclusive salon in New York called KATIE where she only emerges to color hair for the likes of Brazilian Supermodels.
Lucky for us she's right here in San Francisco and we are just a phone call away from Bergdorf Blond Perfection.
If you want shiny beautiful hair color, Katie at Cowboys and Angels is as good as it gets!
Prior to Katie every time I attempted to have my hair colored even just a little, I either came out with unnatural pee yellow streaks, or some dark goth burgundy wine color.
Now, thanks to Katie, I go from blond to brunette and every shade in between with natural soft shiny healthy hair every time.
We all know that a good hair stylist is hard to find -- and once you've found one, well, you better hold on for dear life. After all, if you're anything like me, you not only entrust your stylist with your locks, you also tell them some of your deepest, darkest secrets.
Take Brandi at Cowboys & Angels, she got enough dirt on me to fill an unauthorized biography! While she's giving me my custom-created cut, I'm divulging top-secret information. I always leave feeling sexy and stylish with a renewed sense of self (both physically and mentally).
If I bring in a photo of a hairstyle I like, she's honest about whether or not I can pull it off the look. She always gives me styling tips and product suggestions so that I can recreate the look from home. As a result, I always get a cut that works for me -- and the compliments don't stop!
Oh, did I mention that I live in Sacramento and make regular trips to SF just to see Brandi? I wish I lived closer because she offers free bang trims in between cuts! Anyway, I've finally found a hair stylist I can trust and I'm never letting go.
Haven't been able to see Cole since moving out of Cali. After 6 very sad months, and one failed attempt of trying to find someone out here, I decided to go back. Cole, I love you, from the bottom of my heart and the depths of my roots. I kid you not, she is the BEST stylist ever. Worth every penny, worth the weeks of wait. She is the only person with scissors that I will allow near my coiff.

Thank god for Sarah Northrup. This lady brought me back to life after 4 miserable years of scary stylists giving me "hip" and mullet-ish hair. I've been around the block and am seldom faithful to any salon, but before Sarah I got the worst color of my young life at Oxenrose. SO Hot Topic, some big red and orange strips, more hideous than cutting edge. Sarah explained to me that its all about having pretty hair, and expressing yourself through clothes. I mean, she's right, a pink and black mullet will not get one anywhere in this world. Now I get constant compliments on my not-at-all scary hair color and would never EVER cheat on my colorist. xo
After being recommended by a few friends with gorgeous hair color, I started seeing Marie here and she is AMAZING! I've had every hair color under the sun, from fancy jobs to from-the-box jobs, and it's never been exactly quite right until I went to Marie--now I love it. She is so knowledgeable about color combinations and flattering shades and how to work with hair cut and style, and the combo of hi- and low-lites makes it look oh so lovely. Plus, she is sweet and funny and great company to boot. I'm never leaving; I'm going to follow her around until I'm old and grey!
Also, Rory gives stellar haircuts (all of my friends rave about the Rory-Marie combo!) and Bobby is assistant-extraordinaire who you should catch as one of his students now before he's a superstar.
