satisfactory and adequate as far as typical hotels go -- nothing extraordinary or extremely awful to report.
great location for anyone needing to be in downtown oakland for any circumstances-- namely, for the CA bar exam. (it's also convenient for bar-taker companions because it is right next to chinatown -- my mom spent the three days eating -- searching for the perfect "egg tart" while i took my exam!)
i can't account for the accommodations at the marriot across the street, but i thought the courtyard was less crowded, less expensive, had free-wifi/internet, and fit my needs perfectly.
note: they have mini-fridges free-of-charge (unlike the marriot across the street), but they are first-come, first-serve at check-in and although i was able to snag one (being annoyingly detailed comes in handy at times) others were not so fortunate!
I stayed at this Courtyard Marriott May 2, 2009. It is pretty nice. The commute from SFO to this spot was a breeze on the BART. It's actually only 2 blocks from the back exit of the 12th Street station. Yes! I also breezed thru check-in thanks to Lynn, the helpful desk agent. I headed to my room. Sheets back--check. Tub inspected - check. Free Wi-Fi--check. This room is nice! Pull out sofa, king size bed, flat screen TV, high floor (4/4). All my requests have been met. Yes!
When I was ready to go out for the evening, the front desk staff called a taxi for me. Thankfully, there was a warm cookie available for noshing while I waited. White chocolate Macadamia Nut...Yum!
When I returned, I was happy to find out there was a microwave available for me to zap the leftovers . Yes! In the morning, I dressed in my incognito workout gear to go downstairs and get coffee. The in room coffee would not do, no, not when they have international delights individual creamers downstairs. After I beamed up on Courtyard caffeine, I did the scrub in the tub with plenty of hot water, fluffy towels and mmm that lovely soap (no need to break out the 3-oz tubules yet...). I checked out and checked my bag to head off to church (see yelp). When I returned from church, Walgreens, and Rite-Aid (see yelps), I claimed my bag, stashed my new purchases, and headed to the Ferry (see yelp), again with the taxi assist from helpful front desk agent Lynn. She's very nice and helpful.
I'm not quite sure when this one was built, but it's fairly newish. It was brightly lit, clean, and as I have mentioned, staffed with some of the nicest desk agents. I highly recommend this Courtyard.
Not a bad place to crash if you need to. I've always had good experiences at Courtyard Marriotts. Room was clean and pretty big. Had a king size with a couch. TV is still the ghetto tube TV. Plenty of towels. Pretty standard room that doesn't have a mini fridge. Parking is Valet and its 16 bucks extra a day. AAA discount brings a room to 87 a night. Crashed here for my buddy's wedding. Staff was very nice and courteous.
My client's office is a block away from this hotel so we stayed here.
The singles are okay, acceptable bed, lots of pillows, non-LCD TV, working free internet, nice view of a parking lot, and everything else I'd expect from a Courtyard.
Check-in took about two minutes. I gave the happy hotel girl my credit card, she gave it back along with my room key, and didn't even flinch at the fact that we were checking in early.
While not top dog in the Marriott world, this Courtyard was great for my one night stay.

I'm usually quite fond of Courtyard Marriotts. This is not one of them.
It is conveniently located right across the street from one of my company's offices. It is also conveniently located across the street from a Marriott hotel. It is my fault that I tried to check in at the Marriott, but who puts a Marriott across the street from a Courtyard Marriott?
I wasn't alone in trying to check in at the wrong hotel, there was another woman who was in the same boat as me. And when the desk clerk pointed towards the hotel, he pointed the wrong way, so we walked around the hotel instead of directly to the hotel.
When I finally got to the hotel, checking in took a long time. I feel pain for the guy who was standing in line behind me. He had just checked in (which I assume took just as long) only to find that his room key didn't work.
The internet was slow, too slow to be of any use and in my second floor room, the cell signal coverage was pretty poor. I was unable to write a yelp review of the hotel! I was able to successfully make calls by propping my phone up against the window and using my head set.
To be fair and honest, the hotel is like many other Courtyards: clean comfortable and recently furnished, smoke free and tonight my internet is working mostly okay.
Will I stay here again? No. I'd rather ride the AC Transit to get to the Emeryville Courtyard Marriott. http://www.yelp.com/bi...

Stayed here to attend a graduation in Berkeley. The staff was VERY accommodating and we had quite a few requests thru-out the weekend. -1 star because the internet was freakishly slow (and I had to do some work from the room, I almost left to find a coffee shop)... The rooms were clean, and the location was very convenient for what we needed. Being able to walk to Chinatown for snacks was a big plus! Valet was very speedy with the car (they told us to call 5 minutes ahead, but our car was usually ready if we called before we jumped in the elevator). If they made the internet faster, I'd say this is a solid 4-star hotel!
Truly there needs to be a method of rating 0 stars on yelp...
Please listen to this story, women travellers who may be thinking of staying at this hotel.
I had heard from one of our contractors about how rudely she was treated here. I had no idea of what was in store for me.
There is a woman employee here by the name of either Victoria or Vanessa, I cannot remember exactly, but she is African-American, and she treats woman customers with an utter disrespect that rival no other.
Her anger with me began almost immediately. She had me wait at the counter for 1 hour, stating that she was trying to locate a room OR trying to charge my travel card OR trying to locate a form...all of a sudden the POLICE SHOWED UP!
She called the police on me! She said that my card company had reported the card stolen and wanted the police called. I thought this was an honest mistake...
UNTIL...
I called the card company myself.
The gentleman was horrified, and got the customer service rep on the phone with him that had given her the approval to charge my card!
When the police talked on the phone to the card company, they left. When he heard her talking about how the card was STILL stolen, he asked to speak to her. IDK what exactly was being said, but when you hear the person on the phone yelling, it ain't good...
He told me that the card was good and that they would do some type of behind the scene manual approval.
When I returned to my office....come to find out it was reported as lost or stolen...BY THE HOTEL CLERK RIGHT BEFORE SHE CHARGED IT. When I called the card company to get the gentleman's name for the report i had to complete about the matter, he admitted that the phone number from which it was reported stolen was the hotel's phone number and it was done 2 minutes before the card was swiped.
So ladies, based on this experience AND that of our coworker...this woman gets envious of other women coming in to stay...
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
UPDATE: my boss is sending me back to this hotel for another trip...I plan on calling the police MYSELF if I see her again...

I shall boycott the Downtown Courtyard for life. I woke up at 1am to the sound of revving of dozens of Harleys and cacaphony of horns. This went on for ten minutes. Two hours later, at 3am, same thing. I get out of bed and over to the internet to get the phone number to call, but it's not like Marriott puts each hotel number on their website. I'm awaken at 7am-same thing. This is literally ten minutes each time. At 9am, I'm awake and upset, so I call the manager, as I'm too agitated to walk over.
As soon as the manager (Brooks was the name of the man who answers the phone) learns I'm not a guest and "just' a neighbor, his tone changes and it's clear he no longer cares about the call. He said that they've called Security three times and they can't do anything, that I'm welcome to call the police if I'd like. Unhelpful customer service, and useless security-what a winning combination!
This story alone might ding the Oakland Courtyard a star, but it's when I remember that the SAME thing happened last Labor Day, and they obviously continue to host this same group of rowdy individuals year after year, displaying a blatent disrespect for the concerns of their guests and neighbors, that earns them the dreaded single star status.
I'm leaving town next Labor Day-but you can bet I won't stay at a Marriott.

Another great Courtyard by Marriott property, which is my corporate lodging of choice. Nothing special, just totally predictable Marriott: good service, friendly staff, everything a chain hotel should be. It's conveniently located in middle of downtown Oakland. I have always taken a cab to this property, I don't believe they (or any other downtown properties) have an airport shuttle, so that is a bit of a pain.
I did have a super friendly experience with the front desk guy the last time I was here, where he went above and beyond to find me dinner when I arrived super late. So I give this one more star than a courtyard would normally get.
Update May, 2008: when the staff is not friendly, this hotel drops down to being a 3-star, barely-in-line with what you would expect from Marriott.
I worked at Oakland Zoo's annual Walk in the Wild event last summer. We Priceline-d, as usual, and ended up with this hotel. Check-in was easy and the valet guy was nice. The hotel was clean and quiet and everybody who worked there seemed pleasant. Our room was very spacious for just the two of us. We had two queen beds. I didn't like that there wasn't a fan in the bathroom and I didn't like that the sink was outside the room where the toilet and shower were. We did take advantage of the heated pool, it was lovely on a cool, clear summer evening. For our purposes the location really suited us. We walked to an excellent seafood place called Jesso's where I had my first hush puppy experience. There's also two breweries and a nightclub on the same block. I would definitely stay here again and I would definitely recommend this hotel for single, family and business travelers. Stop by Juice A-Go-Go a few doors down for like 40 different flavors of boba.
I've stayed here a couple times because of drunken nights and not being able to make it home, haha... but this is a nice hotel with good deals! The staff is also friendly! The complimentary breakfast is cool too! You can have eggs made to order any style you want and they make you fresh waffles too!

My beau and I attend a business conference two weekends in October every year. We first discovered the Courtyard by Marriott by mistake ~ the first year we came down, we'd made reservations at the Marriott across the street. The next weekend, the Marriott was sold out so we ventured across the street to the Courtyard. I am so glad we did! Both hotels were wonderful, but the Courtyard offers impeccable staff and comfort. The room itself it a general, middle of the road hotel room, quite comfortable and just fine. They offer breakfast every morning down in the dining area off the lobby (you can pay in advance as part of your room fee or just pay as you go) with a complimentary newspaper. They also offer fruit in the lobby during the day and cookies in the evening ~ who can resist a cookie before heading up to bed! Also of note for superb service are the valets ~ there is a tall valet there who has been there since we've been staying at the Courtyard ~ two or three years? ~ and he's always friendly and helpful. The Courtyard is directly across the street from the Marriott and the Oakland convention center, and it in Oakland's Chinatown. It is a blast to walk through Chinatown and tour the shops! It is also right next to Old Oakland, where restaurants abound, and one block away from a Starbucks that opens early. The waterfront, ferry and Jack London Square are just a few blocks away ~ in a phrase, very centrally located! I would highly recommend the Courtyard for your next stay in Oakland.
