Mr C and I love mexican hot chocolate and so thought the spicy mayan hot chocolate would be even better. I love chai too so we got one tiger spice chai and one spicy mayan hot choc. The spicy mayan was a bit too spicy for me. Ever eaten Vosges chocolates? (OMG those are so good) Well, its like drinking the fiery chocolate bar that they've got. More chili powder than I would like to drink, personally. I'll stick to my tiger spice chai thanks.. yummy!
We had some coupa fries which were pretty crispy with 3 different dips. I liked the white (had a taste of horseradish) and green dip (herb-like salsa verde).. the orange dip was a bit strange to me since it had a spice that did not make me want to crave for more. We munched really quickly on that and shared a calif mozzarella arepa which was rather bland in flavor but their side salad made up for it.
I'd like to try the rest of their menu for an actual meal instead of snack. This place is not stroller friendly but there is outdoor seating available if you don't mind squeezing into tight spaces. It can get pretty busy here even during non-peak hours but be patient and a table will free up... eventually. This place is ideal for couples and tiny groups of friends unless you like having islands of friends scatter throughout the cafe
This place should be shut down. It is criminal, illegal and downright sinister the things that Coupa Cafe does to the chocolate here. You can buy 15 plates of three chocolates and not complete all varieties offered.
Very complex on the palate. Very good. Ridiculous.
Fastest WiFi I have experienced.
Crowded during peak hours, this place is worth the effort to find it.
Al though the rain drops had came into a sudden halt, the full blasting heat lamps on the front porch and bustling atmosphere remained persistent at this cozy Venezuelan café. The charming mix of academics, students, and laptop junkies at every turn gave it a definitive college town vibe, and sat by the door at the first corner table was fellow Yelper Bradley N and I.
With deliberate speed, Bradley broke down the science behind these selected Chuao chocolate bonbons before cutting them into halves as we were treated to an afternoon of dreamy dark chocolate confections at Coupa. With unique names like Cambur, Framboise, Modena, and Pan Con Chocolate, time stood still as we let these exquisite treats slowly succumb to our wondering palates without fully knowing that we were the ones being consumed by them.
Cambur: Banana and brown sugar caramel
Framboise: Raspberry pate layered over almond hazelnut praline
Modena: Strawberry caramel with balsamic vinegar
Pan Con Chocolate: Roasted panko bread crumbs and olive oil ganache with a touch of sea salt
What an exquisite roll call! I can almost catch all the overlapping subtleties as these bonbons slowly unraveled. I wished I could keep my eyes shut and hold the chocolate in my mouth a second longer in order to realize the full spectrum of its sinful superiority. Just when I thought the moment could not get any better, I picked up my cup of tingling frothy, spicy foamy and deliriously yelpalicious Soy Spicy Maya Mocha for a full body finish with a lingering kick all the way to the back of my throat. Intrigued, I kept wondering who this Spicy Maya is as I believe she must be someone phenomenal, ala another Maya, as in the great Maya Angelou. Her poem Phenomenal Woman, matches the heart and soul of this phenomenal drink.
Service was not the most personable but still helpful and friendly. To top it all, they also provide free wifi for their customers. Next time I would love to try their crepes and assortments of great looking pastries at their Beverly Hills location. 5 stars for the fabulous experience.
Cute little place. Must try their Chai. Best chai I ever had!
After a harrowing meal at NOLA last night, we wanted coffee.
The server suggested we walked across the street, because there are "Peet's and Starbucks" around the corner, but Coupa was "really good."
He was right.
It's a really charming place, it was decorated nicely and had a quaint feel to it. Their are little nooks and table strewn about set up for what a coffee place was made for--a place for social interaction, studying or whatever you need to get done.
It was really good, flavorful, and rich. My latte almost sent me into a heart attack from how strong the coffee was, but it was a nice ending to heavy meal.
A good place to people watch.
It was great to sip on my coffee on the patio outside (the place gets cramped, sometimes it's nice to sit and watch the rain) and look at the cute Middle-Eastern something grad (I think...) Stanford (who cares, at this point) student that was using his nicely shaped muscles to study inside.
Ooh, I'm kind of creepy.
Recently, a client discovered how awesome I am. They haven't discovered the phrase "Wilsome" yet, but I'm sure with a little subtle suggesting, we'll take care of that.
Due to my Wilsomeness, I've now wound up flying down to Palo Alto a couple weeks out of every month to spread the wilsomeness around. I've been triyng out different arrival dates and times, trying to get that perfect mix of sleeping in day of flight, traveling, getting in to town, and still getting something to eat that isn't fast food.
My last trip's experiment got me in a bit late on a Sunday night. After cruising up and down University, I finally got smart, pulled over, and whipped out the ol' iPhone. I filtered a search of restaurants to display what's "Open Now", and got some ... odd results. Fortunately, Coupa Café was listed, and I walked over.
First off, bright and warm. A bit crowded, which actually was kind of nice--for some reason I like having people around me when I first get in from traveling. Lots of table options, though most of them were set up for two or less people. That's fine for me and myself, but I had find his own seat.
Second, the selection of teas and coffee was pretty wide. I ordered up a caffeine free item of some kind--mint and something. The resulting concoction and serving device (a little kettle with a cool little cardboard tea bag delivery system) was tasty and perfect.
Third, their food menu was exotic and different. I ordered a really boring chicken caesar, as I'm on a diet as of this writing, but I'm looking forward to returning and trying some of the dishes when I'm done.
It took just a hair too long to get my food, but I couldn't find anything wrong with it once I had it. I sat and read, enjoyed the warmth, light, and eavesdropped on other people's conversations while I pretended to read my book. That is, until I realized no one was really talking about anything more interesting than what my book had to say.
Coupa Cafe is one of my favorite eating destinations in the Bay Area. Fantastic chill atmosphere, free wi-fi, friendly staff, great coffee, a full menu (with breakfast **all day**), convenient location, etc. make it a great place to visit when you have the time. My favorites are their lattes / hot chocolate, a couple of their vegetarian paninis (capresa in particular), and their well-made chocolatey pastries. The prices may be a tad on the high side, but if you're eating in Palo Alto that's unfortunately somewhat of a given. Hands down, Coupa is a great place to visit if you're in the area.
The only reason this is "4 stars" is because it has particularly limited seating (a victim of it's own success, to some extent) and often times you can't find a place to sit down - I wish they'd find a way to expand / relocate to a bigger space so they could accommodate more people. Another slight negative is that they have limited outlets, so those who need power may be out of luck.
This place is as good as it gets. Their tiger spice chai is TO DIE FOR! It's perfect iced or hot. The nicoise salad and all their sandwiches are divine. I'm drooling as I write this review. All their items may be a bit on the pricey side for a cafe, but you get what you pay for - excellent quality!
Sometimes there is a line, but it moves quickly. This is a great place to sit down and get some work done if you don't mind the noise, and if you can find a free table. It's crowded most of the time.
Oh it pains me to give Coupa a 2. It started off really strong, hovering around 4 and then with repeat visits, it just sank lower and lower.
Great patio but the inside dining can be super cramped if you're in the front part of the place. Tiger Spice chair is delicious. Any crepe with tomatoes (during the summer) is very good.
HOWEVER
The last two times I went, I got the wrong order and on top of that, the last time, my food came out cold! Very disappointing and it's kept me from going back.
The cafe con leche "cafe Caracas" with the tipical flower design on the coffee foam, the venezuelan chocolates, the arepas, the cachapas, tequeños, yes they do have TEQUEÑOS! it's a good way of getting your spirit up if you are feeling homesick.
I've been to both the one in Beverly Hills and Palo Alto and they are both as good. The Palo Alto one might be a little bit different just because Stanford people use it more as a internet cafe so It might get really over crowded at times, just remember that you have to order at the cash register and they will give you a number to take to your table.
Bottom line is that it makes me proud to be a Venezuelan and have good quality food representing our country... only thing I would say is that, come on, it's just an arepa... a little bit over priced just because it's exotic but then again arepas are super expensive right now in Venezuela so go figure. Oh and, you eat it with your hands, fork and knife are optional.
Love this place. My friends and I decided to have a work from home day and just work from a cafe around University. We frequent Old Pro a lot so have always noticed Coupa so gave it a try. Super cute place and the coffee was one of the best! And to add, the pastries were really good and service was wonderful. Another plus was the reliable and fast wifi they offer to customers. It does get pretty crowded so if you leave for a bit, good luck getting your spot back. I also wish parking in downtown Palo Alto didn't suck so much. We wanted to work from there the whole day but had to repark after 3 hours in another zone then do the same after 2 hours, etc. Eventually we just gave up but I digress and still say Coupa Cafe is awesome!
Placed a large takeout order and realized back at my office that 1 item wasnt what we asked for. Not a big deal.
What is a big deal is that in order to pick up the item I actually ordered, I had to give the other item back to the restaurant. Gross Coupa Cafe! Are they going to try and re-sell returned takeout?!
Not many cafes have food, except for pastries. Some have a few sandwich options. THIS PLACE has a full kitchen!
The espresso is good, not amazing, but the foam is smooth and consistent. One time the barista drew a cat on my cappuccino; it was pretty impressive.
Overall, the cozy atmosphere, good espresso and full menu makes this a solid four star cafe.
Death by Chocolate is so NOT the way to get your cocoa bean fix. That is very twentieth century, all-you-can eat thinking. It's what makes for an unhealthy lifestyle, to say the least, and it sullies the magical effects that a truly well-made bit of chocolate is capable of producing.
If you want the good stuff - I mean the REALLY good stuff - you need to get yourself down to 538 Ramona, hitting the ATM on the way, to taste their Chuao chocolates and bonbons.
Coupa Café is funky: located in Beverly Hills and Palo Alto (two locations, plus one to open near the Green and Meyer libraries at Stanford where Moonbeam's used to be), the Coupal family bring in roasted coffee and fine estate-grown cocoa beans from Venezuela to serve alongside savory things like arepas, crepes, paninis, and salads. I had been to their place in the Y2E2 building at Stanford, but I had never been to their downtown branch until yesterday. It was worth the trip!
When I entered the place, it was already full, even on a Tuesday afternoon, with lots of folks using free WiFi on their mini-laptops and iPhones. But some people, like myself, had these odd things made of paper that you open and read without needing lithium-ion batteries or anything. A cool invention, really.
I ordered a creamy marrón, great as always, and the Clover Dairy steamed whole milk really melds nicely with the dark-roasted, powerful blends that they serve here.
But then, upon leaving, I picked up some bonbons for dinner at home with my wife. Wow! They were sinfully, sublimely delicioso, esp. the "Picante," a wickedly creative mix of raisin fondue, Napa cabernet caramel, and some spices packing the heat. Ay! Que caliente!
You cannot even imagine how ridiculously delicious this combination of fine and fiery flavors is, esp. when they are encased in some great dark chocolate. Then, with my taste buds still a bit en feugo, a "Dulce de Leche" bonbon soothed them with the soft and silky caress that only milk chocolate and milk caramel can deliver. And THIS was after savoring a "Modena" filled with strawberry caramel and aged Balsamic. So, so, soooo good.
Soon, we will try our Spicy Maya dark chocolate bar (cinnamon and spice and everything nice) and the Chinita Caramelized Nibs and Nutmeg (both 60%). At $6.99 for an 80g bar, these are not cheap. But then again, Hershey, Nestle, or Lindt ain't never gonna' make chocolate this divine as the master chef and chocolatier, Michael Antonorsi, can at Chuao. Chew-WOW indeed! Does Presidente Chávez know about these things, I wonder?
If I had the means to open a cafe, I'd love it to look and feel just like Coupa Cafe. It's quickly become one of my favorite spots in Palo Alto, always full of warmth, charm and irresistible aroma.
Their freshly brewed coffee and rich hot chocolate, accompanied by pastries and Venezuelan chocolates, never fail to satisfy us first thing in the morning. We haven't had a chance to try their cooked food, but the menu offers a variety of dishes.
Open from 7am to 11pm, seven days a week. Wireless internet is available on weekdays, though I personally prefer taking a break from my laptop when I'm here...
Message to Coupa: Please open another branch in my neighborhood as there's a serious dearth of equally charming cafes here!
Quintessential college town indie coffee house. Awesome Venezuelan food! I was surprised! The cachapas had a little American fluff to them, a common mistake made by cooks that want them to be pancakes. This can be easily forgiven by the freshness and overall quality of all their ingredients, exceptional desserts, and a freakin' delicious spiced hot chocolate!
I discovered this while on the hunt for a snack/a place to kill time before my massage around the same area.
And oh my, did I fall in love with Coupa. I really like their arepas, they keep bringing me back for more. Coffee is so good but I also love the fact that they have Tea Forte Flora herbal teas- it's a perfect match for arepa.
This is my little piece of heaven every time I'm in Palo Alto. The lounge area in the back is great for some alone time with good food, good tea and a good book.
Are you pursuing a PhD in English literature?
Are you European or South American?
Are you a huge fan of well-made tea, coffee, and cocoa?
Are you a chocolate connoisseur?
Then you will probably enjoy Coupa. It's a smallish cafe (feels smaller due to everyone being crammed in so tightly). Try to snare a seat either outside on the patio or in the back room. Hot drinks are outstanding. Food and pastries are fine, but nothing to write home about. Chocolates are very, very good.
It is open decently late, but you'll have to put up with the raucous yells from drunk 30-somethings at Nola or Old Pro across the street if you're sitting outside.
Bring your laptop. Or your thesis.
As many others have mentioned, Coupa makes a wonderful, hot, spicy, perfectly sweetened cup of Tiger Spice chai. Relaxing involves ordering one of these chais and snagging one of the couches in the back of the cafe.
However, receiving your chai and claiming your couch can be a complicated and time-consuming process during busy times, when things are far from relaxing and can be confusing and crowded instead. On those days, you may be better off grabbing your chai to go.
Open pretty late (midnight) which is great.
Crepes have a lot of filling but seem to be a little soft. Recommend something saucy. ;)
Food is pretty good, but there's always something that seems to be just short of perfect. Will keep trying new dishes and update accordingly when I find that perfect dish.
Three stars is not a bad thing!
With the other locations in BHills and VENEZUELA, you're lucky this branch is close. Not the best choice for a hangover-curing brunch, but the food is tasty and they have some uniquely Venezuelan treats. We tried the quiche, arepas, crepes and coffee drinks. I had the california mozzarella arepa and it was like mozzarella ONLY. Mozz does not have enough flavor to stand alone like this. I would try one of the meat arepas or something with a little more oomph next time. Apparently, arepas are Venezuelan's choice of eats "after they leave a disco or late night gathering" which is a nice way of saying "drunk food". I'll likely stick to my greasy slices of pizza or big-as-your-face burritos, but it's nice to see what other cultures get into in the early morning hours.
Mostly, this is a nice place for brunch or lunch or to study. I recommend showering first, since the space is a little crowded and classy-ish. We must have missed this memo.
On a foggy sunday morning i was famished after skipping dinner the previous night. So decided to step out to Coupa Cafe. The experience was not disappointing.
Coupa Cafe is one of the few which open @7am on a Sunday. The seating is split into three - outside seating, inside the seating with tables around the coffee/ordering counter and an inside area which had a cozy village house feel to it. The ambiance was good with all the main dishes and desserts on display at the counter (everything looked delicious). I would give a 3 for ambiance.
Its more of a self service joint, but their service was warm and friendly. So an easy 4 stars.
In addition to the standard spread of eggs, scrambles, waffles/pancakes, granola etc, they had some venezuelan options as well. I decided to try the Cachapa (corn pancake served with a layer of cheeses in between and sides of black beans, sour cream and guacamole) This was my first time trying the cachapa and would say i really liked it. Was the perfect healthy start for the day with this breakfast. The abuela hot chocolate had a very bold taste to it. I got a triple chocolate mousse to go (it looked really delicious on the display) and must say it was one of the best i have had. I would give food 4 stars, before i come back to try some more items from their diverse menu since they serve everything for breakfast.
I come here so often that they know me by name and drink.
I love this place. Its one of my absolute favorites, especially for studying. The atmosphere is fantastic and comforting and Coupa attracts a huge range of people. The unique chocolates, while a little expensive, are delicious as well as the iced chai (Tiger Spice) which is the best I've ever had. The staff are friendly and helpful in their recommendations.
The only problem is that there are only about five outlets, all located in the front half of the cafe against one wall. They're almost always occupied and you have to stalk the tables to nab one before someone else does. The back half is a wee bit cramped when its busy, but generally, I'm always able to find a place to sit.
flavorful chai tea, plenty of entrepreneurial conversations, comfortable seating towards the rear of the cafe, very fast wifi
gets crowded during the usual peak hours
Best Cafe Mocha I've ever had in my life so far. Period.
PS- I got the chocolate flavor. They will ask you if you want chocolate or spicy something or other. Just get the chocolate. It is DAMN good!
great place for people watching.
wonderful cup of hot chocolate, tea, or coffee.
nice staff.
food good enough to go back often,
not good enough to write home about.
So, I got the Salmon Crepe and a Spicy Mocha.
The Crepe:
I wasn't floored, but it was good. Around the edges the flavor of the crepe itself was a little overpowering, and I couldn't really taste the salmon. It made me wonder if maybe a different flavor for the batter would make the dish better. It was good though. I just finished it and I'm pretty satisfied.
The Mocha:
Not bad. I was hoping it would be a little spicier, but I can see how that would be a problem for some people. I'm just impressed that they offer it. My roommate makes a really really kicking cup of hot coco with chili peppers, and this really can't compare to that... but on the upshot, this has caffeine.
Other Notes.
I'm writing the review in the restaurant. They do have unrestricted wifi, that's a big plus. They get a star for that.
I paid $15 dollars for breakfast... that seems a bit steep to me, if it were more like $11 I wouldn't feel the need to take a star off. Value is important to me, even in downtown Palo Alto.
I've been coming here for years and it remains one of my favorite places to study. The tiger chai is great, as is the coffee and hot chocolate. The fruit tart is also something I look forward to...
However, while I feel it's worthy of 4 stars, there are a few things to keep in mind about this place:
1. There is no wireless internet on the weekends. This is really inconvenient in my opinion.
2. The prices for the food are quite high considering that the food is of varying quality, and rarely worth the price even when it's good.
3. Sometimes seating is an issue, and during mealtimes the place has a crowded feel.
4. There are only few outlets in the cafe, and none in the back room - just an FYI!
All in all, a good place to study, brunch, or catch up with friends.
Great atmosphere. Free Wi-Fi. Coupa deserves to be a 4-star BUT a cafe w/o good coffee is hardly a cafe. Come here for savory bites and hot chocolate instead.
-- (Any brewed coffee)
Acidic and fruity. Lacking body.
-- Chocolate hazelnut cake with grand marnier
Identify and avoid. The 1/2" layer of pure ganache on top is chocolate overkill on top of a too dry chocolate hazelnut cake underneath.
The coffee isn't bad, but if you're already on University Ave you can find much better for the same price. Caffe del Doge wins, hands-down.
The atmosphere is more hangouty and less froufrouy than the other University Ave spots, which can be a good thing if you just want to chat with some friends and not feel like you're trying to be a part of the big money scene. If you do want to be a part of that scene, the crowd is a healthy mix of college kids and professionals.
One bad experience will keep me from going back though:
I was there with friends late a couple nights ago (too late for caffeine for me) so ordered a cider, of which they were out. So I asked what tea they had that didn't have caffeine, got a bewildering answer, roughly translated to "How should I know? Maybe we have something. I don't know." I finally just asked for whatever tea they had that wouldn't keep me up all night, in the joking sort of 'alright let's just move this along' sort of way. Served an eye roll and a cup of English Breakfast, one of the most caffeinated beverages in the joint.
I'm a pretty laid back guy, and I swear didn't do anything to antagonize the guy. I just asked for what tea they had that didn't have caffeine.
Won't be going back.
The food here is decent, but in my opinion it's not good enough to warrant the prices that they charge here. Yeah, I know, it's rated only 1 "$" (under $10 per person), but $10 for a panini is a bit much!
We ordered the:
- Mediterranean panini (chicken breast with fresh mozzarella, greens, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto): generous portion of chicken, but not quite enough flavor... could've used more sun-dried tomatoes. The panini bread was deliciously crusty.
- Banana & strawberry waffle: Decent-tasting waffle with plenty of fruit on top.
- Chocolate/hazelnut mousse cake: It had a fancy name, but I can't remember what it was... Anyway, it was delicious.
Overall, it's pretty decent but overpriced for what it is, hence the 3-star rating.
DISCLAIMER: My friend Bonnie rightfully corrected me that this is a VENEZUELAN cafe....which sort of discredits the arc of this review.
That said, I still kinda like it and think it gets the salient points across...reality can be SO overrated!
**********
I live in cafes these days, and I LOVE all things Italian...so when you get two in one package, it's really, really tough to screw up.
Coupa Cafe is a shining example of how the Italians just GET quality and aesthetic:
- impeccably fresh, hearty salads, sandwiches & pastries
- Italian coffee (need I say more here? They even provide soy despite that being sacrilege to some Italian proprietors I've run across)
- charming, warm, Tuscan decor
- fabulous presentations (see hot tea spread in accompanying photo)
- ample wi-fi and even power outlets for the lucky few able to capitalize on these choice tables.
- amazingly central location just off University in Disneyla...Palo Alto....
Only downside is that this place HOPS from about noon - on which has two negatives:
(1) it gets pretty noisy, making the Virtual Work thing a bit tough if you need to have a verbal conversation with someone; and
(2) Even if you move your car within 2 hours, the Parking Scrooges of Palo Alto STILL ding you if you fail to repark in a zone of a "different color." Yours truly failed the coral vs. purple test and though only $35 (SF rates are comparison point), this makes me want to hold back on 5 stars as it really kills the ITALIA buzz: I simply can't imagine Carlotto has to interrupt his cappuccino to repark his Ferrari in Florence.
I recommend the cachapa, a sweet corn griddle pancake (see my photos). It's very good. It is stuffed with flavorless queso cheese, which you can scoop out and discard. It comes with sour cream, guacamole, and black beans on the side.
I also tried the french toast (See photos). They use very high quality challah bread. It's OK, but it's not soaked enough on the inside, and not crispy enough on the outside. I prefer the french toast at Il Fornaio: http://www.yelp.com/bi...
And the spicy Mayan hot chocolate is excellent: it's worth a trip just for this.

Ive been going to Coupa for years, their hot chocolates are AMAZING and every food item I have tried has been great. It is better to attend on weekdays, when the shop is packed it just doesn't seem so relaxing.
I had an interesting experience a couple of weeks ago, which has almost completely turned me off Coupa. I had entered with a friend and we were both pretty hungry. He ordered some savory dish and I ordered a chocolate crepe, we were going to split and share. I was appalled at how quickly we were brought our food, until I cut into my crepe to find that it was chicken-swiss. It turns out that they had accidentally handed us the orders of a couple who had arrived there before us. I was frustrated because I was so ready to eat, but I only could have imagined how frustrated the couple could have been, watching us cutting into their food.
We notified the cashier who came over and proceeded to take the crepe away from me, totally unapologetically. I hadn't eaten any but I did cut into it with a fork that I had already been using.
Wondering if we could get an extra crepe out of this we asked the young lady what was going to happen with that chicken-swiss crepe, and it was her reply that left me feeling uneasy.
"Uhh... they take it... back.. into the.... kitchen." We stared at her blankly for a few seconds until she quickly said "Idon'tknow" and literally ran away.
What???
Good iced mocha. Strong on the mocha.
Smallest iced mocha is a medium.
Free internet access.
Nice lookin pastries.
Nice atmosphere.
Often crowded.
Free wi-fi on weekdays. Here on a weekend? Try sitting outside and mooching off Nola's or The Old Pro's wi-fi. :)
Spicy Maya hot chocolate = yum, but would be better if prepared the way it says to on the tin so that the dark chocolate flavor is preserved. They make it in milk, and it doesn't taste as good as it would if it were made with just water, because, well, dark chocolate is greater than milk chocolate.
I like this Cafe very much. It is very cozy. It gives me a very homey feeling. It is narrow and deep and when you walk to the end, there is a sofa that let you lie down. There are several outdoor tables as well.
I like this cafe not only it feels like home but it supports local organic farmers and sustainable agriculture. They use sustainable eco-friendly food service packaging composed of biodegradable products manufactured from renewable resources. They work directly with farms so to support the fair trade for the farmers. That includes getting coffee beans directly from the farmers.
I tried their coffee and their free wi-fi. Coffee is really good. They offer a wide varities of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Vegan options are available on the menu but is limited. However, they will make you anything you name it and they have it. Very friendly and helpful staffs.
Definitely worth a try and this will be one of the cafe that I will always visit.
Waidy
This past summer, I visited my best friend who started grad school at Stanford and we wanted to get a snack somewhere in Palo Alto. I found Coupa Cafe on yelp and decided to give it a try.
We came around 4pm on a Sunday, and the cafe was busy. There were lots of groups hanging out and individuals working on their laptops. We ordered 3 crepes. The coupa crepe had cinnamon, chocolate, and nuts. Although the description sounded really good, I felt like it was missing something. The pesto mozarella crepe was good, but the mozarella should have been melted more. Finally, the strawberry crepe was the tastiest and our favorite for sure.
I also ordered the Mexican hot chocolate that other reviewers recommended, but unfortunately I didn't think that it was that unique. I'll definitely come back if I'm ever in the area and craving a light snack or dessert. I also want to try their arepas, which I've never had before!
After attending my first Bay Area Yelp Elite party in Palo Alto, my buddy met up with my fries and I and took us around to some of the hot spots around the area. He insisted to take us to one of the best cafes in the area for their famous Venezuelan hot chocolate, and needing some caffeine in my system, decided to drop into Coupa Cafe.
Even late at night, the place was completely packed with Stanford students and it was clear that it was a hugely popular place to hang out. I ordered their popular Abuela hot chocolate. It was very tasty and had just a hint of bitterness that comes with good dark chocolate. It was clear why it was so popular and the venue for enjoying it over good tech conversation with great friends was awesome.
Judging from the packed house alone, it's easy to see why the Coupa Cafe is one of the most popular off campus places for Stanford students to hang out, study, or even nap. There's a special energy there that somehow makes you feel smarter just being amongst it. If I were a student there, the Coupa Cafe is definitely where you would find me!
Food: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Price: $
Atmosphere: 9/10
disclaimer: this review is for the venezuelan arepas (they also have cachapas)
while the cafe and drinks may be cool,
2.5 i was underwhelmed by the $11.25 duo arepas, pepiada and special (mechada) -- small stuffed pockets
having had arepas in miami, this isn't the same
texture, flavor didn't do it.
