One of my two favorite cafes in Bay Area.

    Likes:
    - Spicy hot chocolate - the reason I go to Coupa!  It's the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.
    - Spicy mocha - good, but not as good as the spicy hot chocolate.  I order this if I want caffeine.
    - Croissant - butter and chocolate.  Both are delicious and very flaky.
    - Tiramisu - also good, but it's my favorite dessert so I usually have no complaints.

    Dislikes:
    - Way too crowded.  It's almost impossible to get a seat indoors and almost impossible to get one on the patio.
    - Very dark inside making it extremely difficult to read

Great coffee drinks, awesome tea selection and plenty of sitting areas. This is my go to spot for weekday morning coffee and catch-up with my girl friends before heading to work. I've had brunch here and a variety of salads - everything has always been fresh and delicious.

Oh, and I'm a sucker for designs on my milk foam and the baristas here make awesome ones :-)

Coupa cafe is one of my favorite cafes in the bay in the area.

    Loves:
The spicy hot chocolate is delicious!!  I highly recommend it
    The deserts are decadent
The great selection and wide range of dishes available
The benches in the back room are very comfortable!

    Dislikes:
The portions for food are pretty small.  It is fine for me, but some of my male friends don't find it satisfying.  The meals are displayed in the window so you can get a pretty good idea of the size before ordering
It gets pretty crowded and it's nearly impossible to find a seat on the patio

After having dinner at Three Seasons, I had a huge dessert craving. So I turned to yelp for a suggestion. Luckily, Coupa Cafe was really close by. When we came in, I remembered that I had actually come here for brunch with some girlfriends and that it wasn't too memorable of an experience. I had the savory ham crepe and remember feeling that it was a-ok. Not so this time! I took everyone's advice and got the spicy hot chocolate and the dulce de leche crepe. Both were really really really good! The combination of the two was just a tad too sweet for me but it was definitely an awesome dessert.

My Russian friend who is a local, suggested we meet up at this cute little coffee shop.

It's definitely cozy inside, and judging from how crowded it was, looks like a popular hang out.

We had a couple of awesome cappuccinos and chilled out.

I'd come back the next time I hit up Palo Alto.

I've only been to this place twice, and I haven't really gotten the strongest impression from it, so it's not a place I would go out of my way to visit. The coffee shop is small, but cozy. Plenty of tables around (both indoor and outdoor seating) and a fireplace in the back makes for a pretty decent coffee shop. Like all things in Palo Alto though, it caters to the slightly ritzier crowd and things are a tad bit more expensive than I would be comfortable paying for. Especially for the drinks.

I've only had food here once; I ordered an empanada (pablellon), which had carne mechada, black beans, sweet fried plantains & loleta cheese. It came with three different Venezuelan sauces, which were all really quite good. Couldn't really taste the plantains though, but the whole thing was well done and really a delight to eat (really must try all the sauces). For the price, it wasn't that amazing, but it is a specialty food, so it was worth trying at least once. The one time I did get a drink, I went for an abuela hot chocolate because it was raining outside. That was really tasty. One day I might try their spicy maya hot chocolate (comes highly recommended from a friend).

This place is super popular; usually pretty difficult to get a seat, as people are usually there to do work (tons of people bring laptops). We actually used this as a place to plan our trip to Japan and spent somewhere between an hour and an hour and a half, which was great! The internet is pretty non-existent though, so be prepared to tether or suffer the rather useless on again off again internet connection. Atmosphere is nice, but definitely more of a hang out place than a working place.

Coupa serves the calibration standard of coffees. All others are compared against the coffee here. The large 'drink here' coffee arrives hot, in a jumbo, two-handed cup with saucer.

Went here recently for scrambled eggs with mozzarella. The dish arrived with a small cup of fruit consisting of Canatoupe-like melon, Honeydew-like melon, and strawberry pieces. There were also four slices of a fresh, sweet French baguette. As usual, well done.

I think most of their baked products are good. The raspberry croissant is great if your metabolism can deal with it. The ham and cheese croissant would be great if the ham were not chewy and tough.

Most of the time, things go smoothly here. The only thing they occasionally choke on, pardon the expression, is the register. They tend to put new people on the register and the new people aren't as fast as their seasoned staff, so the line can get long as this sentence. This visit, the new cashier charged me $2 more than the posted menu price for this item. There is a lot of churn amongst personnel. This staff turnover has got to be costly. They are often training new people. I can't be late for meetings. Sometimes the line is too long and I have to go somewhere else.

The ordering area is at street level. Officially, there is a fold-away wheelchair ramp that could allow access to the restrooms and back part of the dining area. In reality, a wheelchair would not be able to get past the tables to use the ramp at the back of the service counter. This fold-away ramp arrangement is not user-friendly to the mobility impaired. They should plan to jackhammer the steps and install a concrete ramp at the next opportunity.

Coupa Cafe is definitely a local favorite - you'll find plenty of technorati working alone on their MacBookPros, as well as stylish European expats sitting outside and chatting over drinks.

The menu and food are quite good and that's what draws my colleagues and I to come here regularly for lunch.  Only problem is that recently they've been having a hard time keeping track of our orders, and last time we didn't get our lunch for 40 minutes.  Probably just some bad luck.

Coupa is active in the community, having sponsored a 'bicycle corral' right in front of their shop, and also providing free coffee at a recent civic event.  I'm grateful to have Coupa in our community and I hope they keep up the good work.

I like the ambiance at this cafe. Small tables, very cozy. They have a fairly diverse menu. I tried out the Vanilla Chai with my brother and it was really tasty! In general, I'm not a big coffee drinker but I could definitely go for that drink again.

They are quick to provide the drink you order even when it's seemingly busy. My only complaint would be that it's a bit too cramped to even walk down aisles. Other than that, it's a typical coffee shop.

Great place to lounge, to connect for a casual convo or a work chat, to have fair trade organic shiz, and to a find healthy and delicious lunch.  I've been a bunch in the morning and afternoon only.  Overall, this is a great downtown location with unique food, drink, and seating offerings.

    HIGHLIGHTS:

Cozy nook... the appearance and decor, back room with lounge spaces, covered outdoor seating, and warm tones make this a comfortable place to be.

Black bean and corn salad... Fresh and delicious, this is a LOT of black bean and corn with onion and cilantro.

Tiger Spice Chai Tea... extremely delicioso.  The Chai ingredients are made by David Rio in nearby San Francisco.  This sugary mix is the best Chai I've ever had.

They're the exclusive NorCal carrier of Chuao chocolate.  This is important not just for when you want swanky chocolates (such as their Firecracker Bonbon with dark chocolate, spices, and Pop Rocks).  They offer Chuao "Spicy Maya" in their Hot Chocolate and Mocha.  Dios mío... simply divine.

Spicy Maya Chocolate Mocha... this drink is worth a trip in itself.

    Spicy Maya Hot Cocoa... ridiculous.

Garden Salad... fresh fruit, walnuts, and goat cheese atop greens is awesomeness in a bowl.

Arepas... these little Venezuelan sandwiches are unique for the thin corn meal cakes that hold them together.  Coupa makes them with eggs, veggies, meat, etc.  The "special" with shredded beef, black beans, and loleta cheese is tasty & served with a small refreshing side salad.

Free Wi-fi... Folks regularly camp out here on their laptops.

    Other stuff:

They have a big beautiful display of pastries, but I've never tried them.

Street parking only can be a challenge.  High prices.  Unique offerings.

Nothing better than hot chocolate on a cold fall night.  After dinner we went to Coupa Cafe on Ramona St in Downtown Palo Alto.

I got a small cup of Spicy hot chocolate $3.50 & with tax $3.79.  Paid cash, but they take credit card.

Ask the cashier to see if the barista can make a "bear" on your hot chocolate.  It's very cute!  Barista did an Awesome job.  I should have asked for his name - he had a close-shaven head, Hispanic.

Tried their Tiger Spice Chai and was a bit much on the sweet side for me, but I usually like my Chai based drinks unsweetened or with cinnamon only. Their walnut/banana crepe with nutella (on side) was good. Plenty of walnuts and the wheat based crepe was perfect (not too dry). Will go back to try the spicy maya hot chocolate and the perico (venezuelan) platter or fruit waffle. Cute place but can get pretty crowded.

    ***Best Cafe I've Ever Had

Love. Love. Love. I'm obsessed with everything about Coupa Cafe. It's my favorite spot in Palo Alto. From their elephant chai to dessert to salads to sandwiches they have it all here and do it very well. The word is out so it gets super crowded but they have a lot of seating inside and a fair amount outside as well. Their prices are on par with chain coffee shops ($3-$4 for a drink). They also have free WiFi and water coolers out to help you replenish.

This was a fantastic place to pull out a book or get some work done. Lots of people meet here to catch up or have a meeting and it is a good vibe with a surprisingly decent volume level. There are at least ten seats outside, which is perfect for a sunny day, and they are happy to serve drinks in mugs to stay, which makes everything taste and feel better. And its hard to make their mochas and hot chocolate better.

Workers and patrons are both equally friendly. Don't be surprised if someone starts a conversation with you.

As a self-described coffee snob, when it comes to Coupa - me-thinks-not.
(note, this is based on the mocha & customer service experience I had this morning... nothing to do with their food).

    Coffee:  Mediocre.
    - They do not use clean, rinsed out pitchers to steam the milk.  They just take the pitcher that was used previously, and pour the milk in and reuse the pitcher.  Gross and dirty.
    - They did not clean the steaming wand.  Enough said.
    - They do not steam milk per drink.  Instead, they fill a big metal pitcher with ~3ish cups of milk, and steam the milk for a few drinks.  Efficient? Sure.  High quality?  No.  The milk I received was too hot (and milk gets a funky taste when it's overheated), and the foam was a blob.

    Service: Sub-par.
    - I told them I needed the coffee to go - since I was commuting to work - but they charged me "for here."  I asked them about this, and the cashier rolled her eyes, then proceeded to charge me for another coffee for a to-go price, then refund it - and she said the difference was taken care of.  It wasn't, because all she did was refund a drink that I didn't purchase... but it wasn't worth my time or effort to argue over some change.

Getting charged $4 for a tiny cup of mediocre coffee + poor customer service is something I can do without.  With the variety of coffee shops in downtown Palo Alto, I won't be coming here again for coffee, unless a friend insists.

I might start making the drive all the way from the East Bay just to study here.

Stopped by one day to grab coffee while I was in Palo Alto and was immediately struck by how cute the interior was. Tried the tiger chai latte and it was a done deal. I have had a lot of different types of chai and this is definitely my favorite--not too spicy or sweet yet full flavored and delicious. Pricing wasn't cheap, but fair. Starbucks can't compare!

I read some complaints about service on here, but the baristas were all super nice and friendly and accommodated all my requests. Even though they don't have wifi on the weekends, I still snuck on other nearby free wifi networks and stayed for a few hours, although you might have to sit closer to the door. There are a couple outlets along the wall, but it didn't seem to be too crowded on a Saturday afternoon. Also, unlimited parking across the street in the parking garage after 6 pm and on weekends. I'll definitely be back!

If you want a kick in your mouth try the Spicy Maya. Rich, creamy and full of spices. It warmed me right up. My girlfriends and I also tried their Evasion dessert. It was like a big truffle. WOW, so delicious. The three of us couldn't finish the whole thing!

The people who work here could be a bit more cheery... they seemed to rush taking orders and kind of just throw the drink out on the counter. The 3rd drink also took wayyyy longer than our first 2 drinks. By the time our friend's drink came out, ours were already getting cold =(

4 stars for the great drinks, great interior decor, coziness, warm customer vibes and the amazing Evasion dessert.

I've been here a few times. The spicy hot chocolate is amazing. Also, it a great cafe to meet friends and spend a rainy afternoon. However...don't be in a hurry. I came here for a late breakfast once. I ordered an empanada and my fiancee ordered a sandwich. It took them only about 15-20 minutes to make the sandwich, but after she got her food it was another 30 minutes before I got my food. Seemed like a long time to wait especially since she had completely finished eating by the time my food arrived.

A great place to hang out, but only order food if you have lots of time.

I took my friends here on a "romantic date" to get coffee one night. I loved the music and the atmosphere, I felt like I was in a different country and that I should just start dancing and be happy. We sat outside and we enjoyed the night. The workers are ok - not friendly but not mean I guess.

We ordered some crepe with walnuts, nutella, banana, and strawberries. Ehhh it was not crackin. There wasn't enough nutella, and there was so many walnuts! Like damn do we look like chipmunks or something, it made the crepe more dry.

I liked my tiger spice chai tea.

My friend got a cappuccino and she didn't like it. It was like a big cup of nothing, but foam. Then she made a weird face when she tried it. So I tried it and I made the exact same face. Stay away from the cappuccino unless you like bitter tasting foam.

Plus side the place is right across the street from Nola so we just went there afterwards and washed everything down with an alcoholic drink ;)

I come here for the atmosphere. One of the places you should take friends to. Great coffee and decent foods. It can get pretty busy and parking availability goes down during the lunch hours. My first time here, I found out it was a stand in line to order and they deliver your food to you. I would recommend their sandwiches or non-dessert crepes; they are quite filling.

It's ok, don't hate or love it. I don't understand why people make such a big deal out of this place. Maybe it's because they did that I was disappointed when I actually went.

On both occasions, they were busy. The cashier lady was indifferent and the baristas were also either having a bad day, or just didn't give a crap about anything.

The pastries and chocolate look amazing. I tried the ham and cheese croissant - killed that right away. It was bomb. As for the drinks... we ordered tea - you know, just the baggie with hot water? Yeah.... it took them.... 15 mins... and I had to remind them. So, somehow, they just forgot about my order.

I'm sure the two times I went were "off " days, given that most people here have noted how "amazing" they are. I guess I'll give them a third try sometime soon.

As for decor, LOVE it. Super cute and cozy. If I need a place to just kick it, be on my laptop or mingle with some buds, I'd come here more often. I can totally see this place for students to study or get together.

The hot chocolate was so heavenly and so amazingly perfect. Not too hot, not too cold. Not too sweet, not too bitter.

I'm an avid coffee drinker but this hot chocolate filled the void.

The missing 1 star is only due to the fact that this place is too darn popular. My friend and I couldn't find a sliver of seat to sit on so we had to bring our hot chocolate into the car and back home.

I was here briefly late on a Sunday night and it was full of people with their laptops, studying and catching up with friends. I could see myself returning to get some work done. It can get a little loud, but I really like that in a cafe. You can tell it's a favorite local hang out. No one in our group tried the coffee, but the desserts were pretty classic cafe fare. The truffles were the best out of the cakes, tarts, and mousses we tried, but the rating is definitely for the vibe. Out of all the cafes I've visited around University, including Epi, Peets, Starbucks, this is definitely the one I'd want to revisit.

This has got to be the best place to sit, relax and work.  Order up a cup of spicy maya hot chocolate and dessert is the perfect plan for any time.

Another plus is that the baristas, in my experience are nice enough to tolerate people who order of random mixes and have specific directions.  :)

As for the food here at Coupa, its just alright.  I've tried several different arepas as well as crepes.  I think i'd settle for just the coffee, deserts and fries here though.  (the tabasco guacamole dip is wonderfully intriguing).

I've here at all hours of the day and it's always crowded.  I've shared tables, moved in between coffees and whatnot, but somehow it still retains a relaxing atmosphere.

This place is so full of suprises.  By Venezuelan owner, brings the famous 'arepa' to Palo Alto.  Arepas believe are a corn meal based bread which are a daily staple to Venezuelans eaten with whatever you want inside.  I had only seen them made on videos and was so happy to finally get to try them.  We had one with eggs and ham, another with smoked salmon/capers and the third with a traditional Venezuelan pork stew.  YUMMO.  Also empanaditas filled with Venz cheese or meat with a side of spicy garlic sauces.  If you like coffee the spiced mocha is a MUST TRY.  I also came home with a box of Venezuelan chocolates for my sweety.... Some of them also have a kick of spice but so worth the $19 additional paid for the box.

Crowd is all Palo Alto and if you hap to sit outside on Football Sunday, have the pleasure or annoyance of the crowd of sports fans at the Bar/Restaurant across the street.

Charming rustic interior where many meet, eat or ignore each other amongst the bustling crowds of fans of this jaunt.

Only negative is the 'one bathroom' which can be a hastle when you have so many customers.

    Luvvvvvvvvv this place!

Have a place for dinner reserved? Good. Consider that Coupa Cafe has every other meal covered, whether it be breakfast, brunch, lunch, or late night coffee and dessert.

We discovered Coupa a few years ago after forgoing the ginormous desserts offered at the restaurant. (When did this become the norm?); We opted for something tinier, and Coupa delivered with my ideal dessert, chocolate mousse. (Not a serving the size of Nebraska, mind you; Just about 4 delectable bites is all I need). My wife chose some petit sweet treat of her own (of which they have MANY to choose from).

The coffee here is phenomenally good, even the decaf.  I chose the full octane version during a couple of recent breakfasts.  On the first morning visit I tried an egg combo, which I found so-so (I'm not really into baguettes with breakfast unless cheese is involved).  On my recent visit I discovered the Denver crepe, which was so good I almost ate the whole thing (It was LARGE). The buckwheat crepe by itself was so mouth-wateringly good I pretty much ignored the filling near the end.

The cafe itself is cute, cozy, with a Euro-Venezuelan vibe. With this coffee, these food offerings, plus free wi-fi, it's popularity should come as no surprise.

I've actually only ever had the spicy hot chocolate, and it's a really nice treat once in a while. Haven't had much of an urge to try anything else here.. maybe an arepa but they seem overpriced.

We had a really sassy barista the other day.. like shockingly unfriendly. I asked (very nicely) if I could have my drink in a to-go cup.. which means you literally just pour it into a paper cup.. and he gave me this blank look and no response for a while so I was almost unsure if he'd heard me.. then he wordlessly and slowly performed the task and pushed forward the cup without making eye contact and it was just really off-putting and  awkward. Thanks for ruining what would have been a perfectly nice coupa cafe experience, unhappy barista man.

fantastic beverages, so-so on the food (way too overpriced)...but definitely ALL about the drinks.

I ove their vegetarian friendly menu options.
Service is awesome and employees are super friendly.
Their Arepas, Empanadas and Cafe Milano are FTW!

    Highly Recommend them.

Stepping in from the brisk morning, I was instantly warmed!

I love the warm colors. I had myself a cup of marrón and an almond croissant, both of which was pretty good. I will definitely come back for the hot cocoa!

The staff was also very polite, patient, and welcoming, which was the seller for me. I have the impression I get judged by my age when at University Ave, but I didn't get that vibe here.

    what a cute cafe!

I'm totally not used to this cafe turned lunch/dinner tavern type environment. My friend and I ordered the apple cinnamon crepe and a chicken sandwich with the coupe frappe and hot chocolate. The crepe is quite delicious and fluffy, but all the apples were in the middle, which made it difficult to eat. The sandwich was good as well with lots of cheese&spinach and came with a salad.

Tip: definitely get the hot chocolate - one of the richest ones I've tasted in South Bay!

This place has always been a favorite of mine, and it's a great spot to catch up with an old friend or get some studying or work done on the weekend. I find the place endlessly charming inside with its cozy decor and fireplace, and I usually enjoy most of the food I've had there, like the arepas, pastries, and fancy chocolate.

I also very much appreciate the free wifi and the free parking lot behind the cafe (though they're very strict about their 2 hour limit, so make sure you set your timer!)

I can't give this place more than three stars, though, because I experienced some very unfriendly service from both the girl behind the register and the guy preparing coffee drinks on my last visit there. Not a smile or even a thank you to be heard from either of these folks, and I found myself waiting for almost 10 minutes at the counter for them to give me a teapot of hot water (though the tea setup was very cute, at least).

One of the best parts of visiting a unique, local cafe in a neighborhood like this is receiving personal, friendly service, and without that I wonder why I shouldn't just go to Starbucks?

The spicy hot chocolate is amazing.  It's rich, and the spiciness hits you in a way that is totally unexpected and incredibly pleasant, like taking a shit and not having to wipe.  The espresso was rich and wasn't burnt.

The barista was a rude, obnoxious little dirtbag, and I hope he gets eaten by his no doubt numerous cats.  He was really friendly with the people in front of us, but for some reason, picked us out and treated us like shit.   Seriously, dude was a gash.  Die in a fire, guy.

The cafe itself is still great, but be VERY VERY careful where you park. Got a ticket yesterday and I had only been in the spot for 40 minutes (and it was two hour parking). So now I have to write in and contest it. Booo!

    Shame on you, Palo Alto!

Top line - Good for getting some work done if you are in the PA area and looking for a place to work. Great to meet people for business meetings. Lotsa VCs and entrepreneurs hang out here and it's close to SandHill

The good - free wifi, lots of startup talk around you, people are dressed reasonably, teas are good, great location, plenty of parking around. food is decent but eat only if you are necessary.. there are better places around for food

the bad - crowded, not enough tables with power ports, coffee is meh, cappucinos are worse

Mind you, they have changed some items on the food menu over the last 6 months and I havent tried many of the stuff. I do see reviews that the food has gotten better

Best crepes in the area hands-down. Aside from desserts that make you want to forget your diet and calorie counting, this place offers interesting coffee options like the Vanilla Elephant Chai. Thiscozy, WIFI location in  is a nice alternative option to balance the express location, the company owns on the Stanford University campus.

Great place for catching up with friends over a quick meal or desserts.
