Country is divided into the Cafe (downstairs) and the Dining Room (upstairs), which is fancier.

I ate at the Cafe.  The selection was wonderful - lots of different types of fish and meat.  They have a good variety of appetizers as well.  The food tasted great.  Again - an "affordable luxury"

The wine is a bit expensive.

I was at a business meeting here yestserday. The hamburger was amazing along with the crunchy french fries! The downside? They were blaring circus music so  we could not hear each other and they completely forgot to take the order from one of the publishers. Maybe it was an off day but I was dissapointed to say the least!

Would someone please remind me not to get the fish at high-end restaurants like Country? Somehow I'm overtaken by the need to be healthy - makes sense, I guess, since a dinner like this is quite sinful overall - and so I think to myself "I won't feel guilty afterwards if I order the fish!"  What I unfortunately forget is the corollary: "I won't feel like I had an 5-star meal if I order the fish!"

In this case, it was the black bass that I had, and the bison that I SHOULD have had.  The fish was good, but just not fantastic. Plus, I think the sauce had a hint of fennel.  Suffice it to say that fennel and I don't get along.  The lesson here - that I should have learned from Annisa, too - is: get the meat! My co-worker got the bison, and it was so tender and rich, and served with white asparagus and some interesting mushroom.

Going back to the appetizer, I had the soft-shell crab, which was quite good - and the little green salad on the side was tiny but tasty. The risotto was okay, but didn't blow me away.

I probably would have given this place 3 stars, except a) it's absolutely gorgeous on the inside, especially if you're on the 2nd floor [we had the chef's table, by the kitchen, which was cool to watch] and b) the brioche they served before the meal, which was warm, soft, and sprinkled with a tiny bit of sea salt - perfection - and also c) the swath of peanut butter smeared on the plate of my brioche/chocolate dessert.

Even though I went with people from work [and didn't pay - so complaints about price don't factor into this], I would imagine this would be great for a date - very romantic.

We ate in the cafe.  Food was great and ambiance good but service was terrible.  Very slow, indifferent, non responsive when we complained.  We had to grab some passerby busser evertime we needed anything as we didn't see our server for 30 minutes at a stretch.  There are too many restaurants of similar stature in the city to return again for such neglect.

I have never been disappointed with this restaurant and bar. I find the wait staff to be attentive and polite. The food to be consistently good. Great cocktails! I always seem to have a great time when I am there and everyone I have brought to Country has remarked on how wonderful it was.

Restaurants and bars that are part of hotels tend to be some what flat for an experience these days. I know good ones exist but are few and far between in a city like New York. I was walking along Madison and decided to stop again for a drink and something to eat at the Carlton. I had tried once before but the restaurant and bar was so busy, I couldn't get in. So today I tried one more time and found a moment to spend at Country.

The restaurant and bar can be entered either through the lobby or a side entrance form the street on Madison. I sat down, ordered a Mojito and asked for a menu. The menu in the bar is titled "The Cafe". It is a regular size menu with a good selection of salads, appetizers, entrees and desserts. I had a market salad and the pork terrine. The salad was exactly as described and a good portion for a starter. The pork terrine was made well and the cucumber, watercress and pistachio salad paired beautifully with the crispy rich flavors of the terrine. As a side note, I had asked for some bread with my terrine which hit the spot: fresh, crusty and flavorful.

I didn't see any other foods during my hour here but what I had ordered was good. An average value for your dollar, nothing exceptional comes to mind, Country is a convenient location for a drink, a meal and a social scene for the white collared crowd on Madison Avenue.

Not impressed. I came here with a big group for brunch, and I found the service to be somewhat inattentive. For the pretense and the size of our group, we should have gotten a little more TLC from the staff.

As Daniel W says, it's a dark restaurant, you enter from the even darker lobby of the adjoining hotel, and to make use of the facilities you have to walk down the darker yet hallway (don't make a wrong turn into the kitchen, as my friend and I did). Also, on a semi-related note, this neighborhood isn't my favorite.

As for the food, I had scrambled eggs - simple and a brunch staple, right? At Country: unremarkable and unmemorable. I had to drench my dish in Tabasco and ketchup to make it somewhat tasty! Even a little dill or parsley would have kicked it up a notch (I am loathe to use you-know-who's phrase, but I sometimes you gotta).

I have to add that the coffee was very well prepared, and I loved the Bodum tea and coffee accoutrements - an excellent touch.

I give them 3.5 stars because everybody else in my party seemed to enjoy their meals. Perhaps I ordered the wrong thing. I am open to giving Country another chance - I have a feeling that they may fare better at dinner.

Sunday brunch shouldn't be too hard to execute, right?   Offer some egg dishes, with some bacon, potatoes, and a nice bread basket, serve juice or coffee, and send your guests on their merry way.

I thought a place like Country would've been able to tackle this task with no problems given its culinary reputation and its connection to a swank hotel.

Lets just say that the food was decent, but the service was poor and the experience was dreadful.    I went here on a Sunday afternoon with no reservations, but easily got a table for two.  We were excited to have brunch - i ordered the scrambled eggs and a side order of bacon.  The eggs were fine.. pretty tasty.. but the bacon was well done to the point of being crunch like a brittle cracker.  We waited over 15 minutes for a waitress to take our order.  Not a good start.   Then the tables around us were complaining about the service.  One lady wanted milk for her coffee but couldn't get anyone to help her for 10 minutes.  Another lady asked for her baked eggs to be cooked a little more, but they ended up overcooking them.

For almost $20/person for Brunch, I would've expected spectacular.    Eggs were nothing to complain about.  The problem was everything else.  Give the eggs 3 stars, and the rest 2 stars.

I went to the Cafe part of Country (that sounds odd) after a long day of battling Christmas shoppers in Herald Square. The bar was recommended to me by my fashionista brother and I definitely needed a drink.

I had a blast - the cocktails were well-made, the bartender was very attentive and they did not hesitate to serve their appetizers at the bar (Gruyere cheese puffs - YUM!). The ambiance was lovely and the crowd was pleasant. A bit on the pricey side, but everything is spelled out on the menu, so there are no surprises.

I am definitely coming back for a more substantial meal!

I came here after my business dinner with my department.  I came here since our Italian agent was staying at the Carlton and we wanted to go somewhere for a night cap.

I didn't feel like drinking alcohol-so I ended up getting a decaffeinated tea and their apple crumb dessert.

Claudia got coffee and their chocolate cake.  It was too heavy for my taste buds, but I would still come back here again.

This place has a nice ambiance - very chill and relaxing.

Had a farewell brunch here with visiting family members who were staying in the Carlton.  I have never, ever, ever, not once in my entire life, had macaroni and cheese that tasted this good, or was as filling and satisfying and rich and oh my god that stuff is off. the. hook.

The other diners watched me with only slight envy as they devoured their own dishes after having a taste of mine.  Everyone seemed very pleased with what they ordered and the coffee was very good and very strong.  My mimosa was also quite yum.

Service was great and the decor was amusing.  But that macaroni and cheese is why I will come back here over and over again, much to the detriment of my inevitably expanding waistline.

New York, you are making me fat and I love you for it.  How do some women stay so thin in this city?  Fools, all of them!

there's nothing country about Country. this elegant, oaky and leather stuffed but not stuffy upscale hotel establishment provides bars (and an upstairs champagne bar, always a good idea!) and fine dimlit dining. my favorite aspect of my evenings here are the watchful, attentive and attractive bartenders who concoct cocktails the way you want 'em (mindnumbing marvelous mojitos anyone?) while being sure to provide you with ample napkins to wipe off the oil from the magically appearing overbrimmed bowls of olive/nuts (translation: no longer necessary to inconspicuously wipe fingers on the passing by meticulously creased thomas pink shirts of those pushy poser prepsters who like to think of themselves as posh, whom we've all had the inevitable misfortune of encountering at places like Country in the city)

This place was beautiful but  the food didn't live up to my expectations. I started with the beet salad. Compared to the beet salad I had at Chez Panisse, this was just not good. It tasted flat, underseasoned, everything on the plate was just very ordinary.

I had the sea bass for an entree and again, nothing all that special. I think it was a tiny bit undercooked and whitebeans/sauce was boring

The dessert was the best part of the meal. The toffee pudding was amazing. Warm, sweet, gooey, the butterscotch, chocolate chip ice cream cooled it nicely.

I'd like to come back and try more things on the menu, perhaps they will be better, or the kitchen was having an off day. It was also Monday, when most cooks take their days off, so you never know.

I don't think I have given 5 stars to a restaurant in a very, very long time. Maybe it is because I had the chance to have not only breakfast, but also lunch at this fine establishment.

To start, the decor is unbelievably beautiful. The first floor is great, but I'd definitely eat on the second floor any day of the week. There are Venetian chandeliers, an original Tiffany dome, the original tile floors and a spectacular view into the kitchen. I love looking into the kitchen and seeing art on the walls and smelling the wonderful food being cooked.

On to the food. The breakfast menu is perfect. I had the most difficult time making my selection, but I finally settled on the stuffed french toast with blueberries, blueberry jam and hazelnut butter. Let's just say I savored every bite. Can't forget the coffee and it came with a beautiful, warm, small carafe of foamy milk. It's now my favorite way to start the day and I will now only be disappointed with every coffee moving forward. My friend had the organic yogurt and berries with a latte - I yearned to have her dish and drink as well. I would've ordered it all. Really.

Moving to lunch. We had a luncheon here for about 25 people and the event coordinator, Jennifer, couldn't have been more accommodating. Not to mention the waitstaff. Everything went off without a hitch and the food never tasted better. We started with a herb ricotta ravioli, topped with shittake mushrooms. I have a new found love for those little shits, shittakes that is (which paired perfectly with a Chardonnay). Next up, we had one of my personal favorite dishes, lamb chops. The meat was cooked perfectly and I can't even describe how great it went with a minty Cabernet. For dessert, we had a slice of bleu cheese - which I have never been a fan of, but somehow I was swooning over it with the rest of my table.

Lastly, I sampled a couple of their macaroons. I am never one to turn down a good macaroon. I have to admit Miette in SF does them better, but that was my only comforting thought on why I shouldn't leave my tiny apartment in SF and move into the Carlton Hotel.

I have enjoyed many dinners at Country, but due to being overserved most of the time, I can hardly remember what I ate (or unate for that matter)....What I do recall most recently is:

I had a day of beauty and luxury, mani and pedi in the morning, a quick meeting with a great outcome, and the James Coviello show, courtesy of Fiji Water and Time Out NY.   So fun.  I was with Ms. Dark for the latter of the day, and we popped in after the show for an afternoon glass of Champagne.  Great company, great atmosphere, and now that they speak my language, Nicolas Feuillates Rose Champagne by the glass!  And what a heavy hand the barkeep has!  It was a delightful afternoon, ending on a bubbly note, and soon to be repeated.

Food update to follow as I dine again here soon.

Excellent brunch place (downstairs part). The space is beautiful and service is friendly (but not always attentive).

We started with the bread basket which was decent. I never find these bread baskets that great to begin with. I had the spicy panzanella salad (had a definite kick to it and the blue cheese is what made me get it) as the app. Then, I had the french toast which was excellent. we also got these cheese balls as complimentary and I ate every one of them.

My friends got a salad and the biscuits and gravy and they all raved about their meal.

This is a place I'd definitely recommend for brunch. Very solid.

Country is housed in a glamorous, newly remodeled 3 part space carved out of the Carlton hotel. There is a definite nod to 70's luxe downstairs in the water gilded moldings, the discreet use of cubist lucite and the abundance of chocolate leather. Upstairs however is anything but discreet, with it's vivid original  tiffany dome, and the plethora of silver and heavy cream colored moldings that reflect darling, reflect, in the radiance cast by the Ventian chandeliers encased in frosted glass.

The food downstairs is deeply satisfying. Our party of 4 sampled much of the intriguing menu, starting with a silky terrine of foie gras, the beet and black truffle salad with blood orange, giant sweet scampi with bruleed lemons and the table favorite, earthy roasted artichokes with an aged balsamic and wild cherries. Our entrees were equally as good. Well chosen produce cooked with care, from the slow braised lamb shank  flavored with pomegranate seeds and preserved fruits falling from the bone to the scallops marriage with squash, an unexpectedly perfect union of flavors.

Desserts were good, though leaning towards the homespun - sugar is the new comfort food, apparently. I really liked the wine-list too, though we were bemused by the single rose offering amidst the 200 odd bottles on the list.

Later. we got a kitchen tour for a night-cap, by Chef Zakarian's charming wife and muse. All quiet, all still, and as we stepped shyly up to the giant silvered altar, all reverence.

My friend Meghan had heard good things about Country, and given that it was adjacent to my hotel, the cards were all dealt for brunch this morning.

Without a reservation, we sat at the Cafe Bar, which was fine by us, since our bartender was ready to serve us some rather excellent Country Bloody Marys, perfectly spicy and certainly the pick me up I needed from the night before.

There were so many great sounding options on the menu (stuffed French toast, crisp market salad, marinated herring in a jar),  but we opted for the more "lunchy" items. I went with the Macaroni Gratin, which Meghan remarked was quite possibly the best macaroni and cheese entree she's ever had. Her own choice, the Pulled Pork Grits, was also quite tasty.

I hear the Dining Room upstairs is fantastic too, great for something a little more elegant; the $85 prix fixe menu is the way to go on this option.

The food has a sense of rugged elegance I suppose, perhaps a New Yorker's take on what a dignified Southern lifestyle should be all about.

I had a business brunch here today and think that this is going to become my regular brunch place now.  While it's slightly expensive, the ambiance is lovely and the food was very good.  I am always a little hesitant about restaurants inside hotels, but this restaurant has an elegant ambience that blends well with the elegance of the Carlton Hotel.  The service was nice, not great, but good enough.

I was torn between the stuffed french toast with blueberry jam and hazelnut butter and the oeufs de plat with hens of the woods (which apparently is some kind of mushroom), gruyere and herbs.  All my friends know about my love of gruyere, but the server insisted on the stuffed french toast, so I went with her choice.  It was a lot of food, but so well-prepared and well-presented on this modified griddle plate thing that was just charming.  The french toast was basically cut into two perfect large circles with the size of pancakes.  I was barely able to finish the dish.  The chicken apple sausage links were also delicious.  My colleague got the country burger, which was ginormous and the fries that accompanied the burger were delicious with the right amount of crispiness and seasoning.

We were too stuffed for dessert, but they looked like they would be good.  The coffee was good, but I was annoyed that our waitress never offered to refill the coffee and it took multiple attempts for me to get refills for my water.  In addition, the coffee mug was pretty, but very hard to hold, as it didn't have a real handle.

I will definitely come back to try the macaroni and cheese cabonara with proscuitto, caramalized onions and gruyere, which sounds really good, but it would also probably put in a food coma for days (which was what the french toast did for a couple of hours today).

This is a great place for a business lunch or a small party.  There was a group of 8 people seated near us and I didn't feel like they were intruding on our conversation or vice versa.  The restaurant has a good layout, although the bathroom was much further than expected, as it is in the hotel lobby itself outside the restaurant.

I went to Country last night to meet Miguel, who is one of the best mixologists in the city. I ended staying for four hours and had a really wonderful tme. The fact that I was accompanied by a beautiful girl may have had a lot to do with it but Miguel's reputation is very well deserved.

Miguel treated us to some spectacular cocktails with one in particular being a sensational piece of theatre. You would have to get into his good books to get to taste it as he professes to only make it for friends!

We were having such fun that we decided to eat at the bar and that was a great decision. We ordered the prawn appetiser, hanger steak and pork loin. And all were beautifully prepared and delicious. But they were thoroughly upstaged by the French fries. You might think that a French fry is a French fry is a French fry and to be honest yesterday at 7.30pm I would have agreed with you. By 8pm I was of a totally different opinion.

The French fries at Country are hands down the best that I have ever had. In the UK we have chips - fat fries that in most instances take a French fry to the cleaners. However they do something to the humble fry at Country that defies description. I dont know how they do it but i am still smiling about it now.

You dont have to go to town at Country just sit at the bar and have Miguel mix you a cocktail and have an order of fries - better make that two. You will not regret it and it wont break the bank...

Had drinks and snacks in the bar and was not impressed. The service at 3pm was lackluster - we ordered wine, and the server brought out the wine and we had no wine glasses and he was actually getting ready to pour! Sent back one of the wines after tasting it too.

Ordered their version of gougeres which turned out to ooze gruyere from the inside - an unpleasant discovery at best. Had another cheesey dish which was pretty tasty but still not anything very special.

this review is actually for the Cafe at country - so i'm hoping my experience here was a fluke considering there is a lot of positive feedback for the upstairs dining experience.

Plus i'm not normally a tough critic - but i had a hard time even giving the Cafe even one star. We came to Cafe at Country b/c my parents were coming into town for an early Sunday dinner - we wanted something comfortable and relaxed - but still a nice dining experience.  We got NOTHING close to that.  I dont even know where to begin counting all the ways this place went wrong...it started out that i made a reservation for 6 people - they see 6 of us walk in and head us towards a table for 4.  we all stand around confused until they point us to a new table - which is below the stairs to the upper dining room which is filled with scrambling staff b/c there's a giant leak in the ceiling (it wasn't even raining that night).  the lighting was way too dark for 6pm, we asked for extra candles.  the place was empty and it took 20 minutes for our waiter to even come over and offer us a drink.  we ordered a bottle of wine - it took them another 20 minutes to find it b/c turns out they didnt have it in stock.  then when they did find us a comparable bottle they took it away to open it - not in front of my dad who had ordered it.  we all finally ordered - and LUCKILY the food was good.  but they did mess up our order - a few of the side dishes got mixed up.  one missing, and one we didnt order.  they even messed up the COAT CHECK - at least 3 attempts to get us the right coats after we handed them our coat check tags.  the only thing they did right (and quickly) was get us our bill b/c we told them we were rushing to catch a train.

we're a nice group of people and tried to grin and bear it - but it was truly a horrible experience. luckily my family i laughed it off b/c the food was tasty - but the service and ambiance was hideous.  An experience THAT bad for THAT much money couldn't possibly be real.....we almost felt like "The jokes on us" we had to be on candid camera or something...

Fantastic.

First of all, the two of us got a table that overlooked the lobby of the restaurant. It was set back away from the dining room a bit but you still had a great view of the people in your own spacious private corner which felt like a balcony seat over the lobby.

There are 3 tasting menus available from $85 to $120. Or... like us, you can just tell the kitchen to cook for you and not look at a menu at all. That worked out to be $135/ person.

We had 6 course of savory and 3 course of dessert! It was really really wonderful. Some standout dishes include the first course of appetizers that were little finger foods. There was a puff pastry with guyere cheese that I could have ate a dozen. Another course was a seared scallop with a meyer lemon foam and paddlefish caviar. The avocado-dill gazpacho was OUTTA THIS WORLD. It was served with micro croutons and a dill creme fraiche. Apparently there's 26 ingredients that go into this soup. It was sooooo goood! We had a 2 oz portion of bison which was of great quality and flavor. And we had the tiniest frog legs ever served in a little egg cup with a brass frog looking up at you from a lily pad. There was also a sepe mushroom tart that was quite good too and you could tell there were a ton of ingredients that went into it as well.

We were getting pretty full and opted to skip the cheese course. Though my body thanks me for that decision the next day... I regret not stuffing myself full with some cheese. So they started bringing out the sweets.

We had a pre-dessert which was a tiny brownie with a taste of mint ice cream,... then we had a chilled apricot souffle which was like frozen whipped cream which was served with an apricot compote and a bite size bit of something that resembled french toast. My friend was too full and requested a sorbet for dessert so he got a white peach sorbet served over a gorgeous mix of berries- gooseberries, raspberries, blueberries... Post-dessert was a small tray of miniature tarts and chocolates. I thought is was keen that their iced tea is served with ice cubes made with ice tea!

We were there for well over 2 and a half hours. The service was impeccable and the waitstaff incredibly knowledgeable. I didn't find any of them to be stuffy or snooty! I enjoyed watching the choreography of the waitstaff throughout the night. The restaurant was quite busy.

This was definitely a meal that broke the bank. But it was worth the experience. For two tastings (9 courses), a glass of champagne, and a Corzo on the rocks ($25 alone!), our meal cost $370. This didn't include tip so by the time you add that in... it was $500 for the two of us and we didn't even order a bottle of wine.

If it were available, I'd go back just for the gazpacho alone. But... you can't. It's all or nothing.... no "a la carte" in the upstairs dining room- just tasting menus. This is a wonderful place to bring people you want to impress. Business partners, parents, or maybe that hot date that happens to be a foodie.

If you're feeling swanky then this is the place to go.  Beautiful people, beautiful food and all of the glasses are from the new Bodum line.  Though I left slightly hungry, my taste buds were satisfied with the light breaded, sauted potato gnocchi garnished with slivers of Romano cheese and mushrooms.  They had an excellent wine list, though I can't help but be disappointed when restaurants don't offer Chianti by the glass.  Our table had an assortment of deserts -- the highlight actually being the apple tart with a side of pistachio ice cream.  I also enjoyed the lemon donut holes, which were light and airy with no grease involved and they came with a side of kumquat marmalade.  The service was consistent but snooty.

Came here last Friday, as a last minute thing. We sat in the downstairs 'cafe' area which is slightly less swanky than the upstirs. Absolutely gorgeous! Our table was extremely close to another table- but this only felt too close when you are getting up/ down from the table.  We got a $26 tasting board which was a great deal- perfect for 4. That was coupled with the $21 Foie Gras.  I had a pasta dish for an entree- and could not finish it! This place is so much better than Olives, and just a few blocks away- and a better deal to boot.
We also had fantastic wines, which I have no clue about- but they were great. Mmmm.

Country is a stellar restaurant.  Not only is it a plush Deco style space found upstairs in the Carlton Hotel with a Tiffany stained glass dome, marble, and crystal ....but every single dish we had was breathtaking. We started off with Ruinart Champagne and the most incredible freshly baked parker house roll topped with sea salt and fresh chervil.  There were also some delicious appetizers to start before we moved into our menu which was accompanied by a Vogue Chambolle Musigny which I chose off of a very approachable wine list.  The Soft BoiledEgg with Cauliflower, Caviar, and Croutons which I had was absolutely to die for as was the mushroom fricasee with polenta and crispy onions.  My sister got a Tender Lettuce and Herbs salad with pistou and fougasse which was just heavenly as well as the Scallops with Tarragon.  For our main courses, the Berkshire Pork with Potato Latke, Sour Cream and Apple and the Bison Bordelaise with Bone Marrow...Both sooo delicious and unfortunately barely eaten quite simply because we had eaten way too much over the past four days!...and we had to save room for dessert and the magnificent cheese selection.  They really do the cheese in style at country, and I highly recommend it.  All sorts of lovely accompaniments such as chutney, mustard, marinated peppers, house baked breads...and a very impressive array of cheeses.  Desserts were superb, my favorite being the Bread and Chocolate (ohhhh one of my favorite themes!) which I could hardly put down even though i knew that the huge selection of mignardises was soon to come.  They were wonderful too! Macaroons,  choclates, little thai long pepper panna cottas, caramels, canneles, and so many others i can't remember.
Last but not least, a preciseness and elegance of service which was at the same time so warm and welcoming.  Thank you for such a memorable experience.

I went to Country for a mid-morning breakfast with friends and was not disappointed. I'm not usually a huge fan of french toast but the french toast layed with blueberries, blueberry jam, and hazelnut butter was to die for! I will definately go back for more.

Country is an excellent restaurant.  The service is outstanding and friendly.  The food is delicious; I highly recommend the Tuna Au Poivre for a main course and the Bananas and Chocolate for dessert.  The scenery and design of Country is gorgeous and elegant!

Went here last year for my bday with some friends.  I live right across the street and it's so great to have such an upscale place in your 'hood!  Anyway, I was amazed at what a great job they did to redecorate this gem of a restaurant.  We went upstairs and ordered some drinks and water.  It's all top shelf upstairs (including the $30 bottle of water which my friend was aghast about) and then we went downstairs to have dinner (which I'm told is an entirely different and casual menu than upstairs).  The food, wine and dessert were nothing short of fabulous, not to mention the attentive but never looming service.  Our waiter was knowledgable about everything on the menu, including all the wines we inquired about.  The one he suggested was pricey but excellent.  All dishes were superb and the clientele real eye candy, too!  It's definitely a "scene" so to speak.  One woman at the bar looked like she'd been spit right out of a Hollywood Oscar party!

Ate in the dining room upstairs. Very very good food (but also very very expensive). The tastes were divine, with black truffles in many of the dishes. A fun treat for a special celebration.
