I stayed at the Country Hearth Inn the last time I visited San Francisco and really loved it. I don't usually stay in hotels or motels in SF because I have family there and it is cheaper to stay with them. There are a lot of nice things about this place that made it worth staying at. I managed to find a good deal through Kayak and http://Booking.com for under $65/night, which is great for SF. For that price, you usually worry about a lot of scary stuff like bedbugs and stuff, but not this place.
We stayed in a bottom floor room that was designed to be handicapped accessible and wheelchair friendly, meaning huge bathroom! I'm not in a wheelchair or physically handicapped, but having the extra space and bars for those who are is great. The bathroom was very clean with plenty of toiletries for travelers who need them. The bed was nice and comfy, I think it was pretty big too. The parking lot is small, so once you're parked your car is safe for as long as you stay at the motel.
The location is excellent, it's in the Marina District close to several bus lines and within walking distance to the Exploratorium and Palace of Fine Arts, as well as many different restaurants and stores. The area feels very safe, even late at night and walking around here is nice. I didn't really took advantage of the continental breakfast and the micro fridge actually was an extra fee (I think it wasn't a huge amount), but there are plenty of good places to eat nearby. -

I needed a last minute, cheap place to stay over night last weekend for the US Half-Marathon and I was so glad to find a cheap place near the race in time.
I paid $82 in total for a room from Saturday-Sunday.
I've never stayed at an Inn or a Motel and I might sound a little prissy, but you really shouldn't expect much from a cheap place. I was just glad it was cheap and we had someplace to stay during times of desperate need, haha.
The door in our 2nd floor room didn't even fit properly on the door frame, there were cracks on the top and bottom of the door and I was afraid it would let bugs in and not to mention without the heat on high, it was freezing at night.
They blanket on the bed was basically a thin sheet of bedspread and a roughly cut piece of cheap fleece hospitals give you for free in the ER.
The bathroom was very bright and clean which was nice as well.
The first thing I noticed about the room when I first stepped in was that it smelled like weird potpourri... But i guess didn't really mind because I got used to it by the end of the night.
Overall, this hotel is great if you're looking for a bargain near the Marina, very close to the pier!!
Another downside is that parking is VERY LIMITED, every time I took my car out for a ride around the city, I had to park in different places and I didn't feel very comfortable parking my car around the block over night but I had no choice since there's only like 7 parking spots available in the tiny courtyard.... -

Also known as "Country Hearth Inn." I do not know why you can find this hotel under two different names. It's very weird.
Anyway, I am a big fan of this motel. We stayed here for 5 nights for $480. The rooms were clean and not horribly decorated. They claim to have "Evergreen Rooms," which are free of odor, dust or dust mites. We stayed in one of those rooms, and there was definitely a weird odor...but I can't say I was bothered by any dust or dust mites (but I never have in any room in any hotel). The furnishings weren't too tacky and were relatively comfortable. There was a nice hot shower and tub available. Turning on the air conditioner (or even its fan) helped drown out the inevitable noise coming from Lombard St. Speaking of Lombard St--you're 1 block from the Presidio, near about 500 bus lines, but are still away from the touristy main drag.
There was a 'continental breakfast' offered each morning, which was really just pastries, fruit, juice and coffee. Still, though, it was free and made for an easy breakfast. The "free parking" was indeed free, but I did not see an open parking spot once during our stay. Overall, I'd say that for $80/night, this was a really nice, comfortable place to stay.
One thing that deserves a special shout-out: The front desk service. Our flight was canceled the morning we were flying out. We were fortunate enough to get on another flight, but it meant us getting in after midnight. I called the hotel and explained the situation. I was told it was no problem; the office door would be locked, but just ring the buzzer and they'll come and get us checked in. Sure enough, out came the poor lady who had obviously been sleeping. She was very friendly, checked our names, gave us our keys, and told us to just come back in the morning to finish check in. Every time we saw her, she was very pleasant. She made my stay that much more enjoyable. -

Stayed for one Saturday night before an early morning appt. for a decent price.
Staff was VERY nice and efficient. Room was clean and adequate for our needs, although a bit small. Internet access was smooth. Was able to use the parking lot because a space was available. Not the inn's fault but was awaken numerous times (midnight, 1:30, 2am, 2:30am) by groups of young adults returning from their night's partying probably on Union Street. If you are a light sleeper, maybe not the best place. Was a bit annoying because had to be up at 5am. Would consider staying again.
