Fashion novice warning: if you are not familiar with a Japanese aesthetic (12 different shades of taupe and ivory all layered) and accustomed to a very fine hand (super fine, super light cashmere and wools), then this is not the place for you to shop. If you are not a true blue denim aficionado and familiar with high-end indigo, sorry but go back to the Gap.
The clothes are expensive because no one else in the United States carries these labels. The owner and her staff have a very personal touch with the customers that understand the look. I can imagine that being on Hayes street, one gets a LOT of traffic and "looky loos" and even more of those people probably ask why everything is so expensive. If I had to answer that questions 50 times a day, I'd ignore some people, too. This place isn't for everybody because it IS harder to understand.
So go easy on them and keep an open mind. No one will force you to buy these special garments, but don't knock what you don't know! For those that do, a special experience awaits. -

Awesome kids clothes but very expensive. If you want to style your little one or get a super cool new born gift check this place out. They have adult clothes too but nothing I had to have. A lot of the guys stuff was well made, but seemed like it was made to fit tiny people. Im 6'2 and in good shape and I think the designers of some of the clothes must think of me as a giant. For me it was all about the kids gear. I wish they made that stuff in my size. Yes this place is pricey but sometime you have to pay play. Worth a stop by if you have just had a kid or know someone that has.

They have some nice pieces but unfortunately the customer service was horrible!
The owner / older lady was so rude, we felt like we were being yelled at. My boyfriend asked if he could try on some jeans and she just refused to show us anything. She even told her colleague not to waste her time with us because we were difficult ... I don't get it: if you have a shop, don't you want to sell clothes? I guess this isn't the case for Cotton Sheep: you must first pass the old Japanese dragon review to have the right to shop there.
Note to everyone: be prepared to be shown the door if they feel they don't like you.
Note: I felt bad for the other salesperson who was really friendly and nice. -

I wanted to shop here and spend too much money. My husband was bracing himself for a spending spree and tried the best he could to convince me otherwise. I probably would have ignored him anyways as he so points out, but this time he was right. Well, kinda. He was more concerned about the price of the items in the store, but what made us walk out was extremely rude service.
They sell children's clothing at Cotton Sheep. We brought our two-year-old who of course likes to touch things - but by no means is allowed to create a mess. We're better parents than that and much more responsible. But within one minute of walking in, we were told "Thank you, good bye. There is a park down the street where you can play."
WTF! Don't you want our business? Yes we brought our kids, but you sell children's clothes for goodness sake! Did you expect us to shop for our children when they are not there to try on sizes and such?
Cotton Sheep, you suck. We live two blocks away and no matter how much I want to shop in your store, I will never go there again nor will I recommend you to anyone. Sayonara that biatches! Baby mama out. -

You know that scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts goes into the fancy store and they treat her like garbage?
That's what they model their customer service after.
I know I don't have tons of cash but I deserve to be treated just as well as everyone else.
When my friend pulled a dress off the rack to admire it she was snapped at and told not to drop it.
They never offered any assistance, they only stood by making sure we didn't soil their organic valuables. -

I can not believe this place. What a crazy B*** the owner is!
I walked in to look at baby clothes for a shower when an oversized women's sweater caught my eye. I started to pull it off the rack and unbutton it when the owner ran over , grabbed it out of my hands and said "NO!....this too small for you! This size 0... You size 4...at least!"
Excuse me???Now I am not petite but I am definitely in the normal category. If I buy my sweaters snug... I am pretty sure that is my business. I have been in the retail and fashion industry for years and this is the poorest excuse for customer service I have ever seen.
I hope she sells nothing and goes out of business. If my label was being sold at that store I would pull it out immediately. So unacceptable.
Note to the owner: Women don't like to be called fat. Just thought you should know. -

This is one of the most unique stores in Hayes Valley. It' s so unique that it draws people without children in to look at children's clothes. It draws in clothing designers of all types to study the unique use of fabrics.
Cotton Sheep is a Japanese import store, stocking clothes and jewelery for women and kids. Strolled in on the late side as they were closing down and the owner gave me a tour. The entire place is done up in earthy wood tones and modern, tansu-reminiscent, shelving done up in cedar behind the counters. The women' s clothes are very cool, with interesting fabric mashups. But it's the kid's clothes that just steal the show, with amazing layered patterns and organic designs that are art themselves. Hard to imagine so much drool and apple sauce covering such nice pieces. Then again, if you want the best for your little fashionista kid, this is the place. Dudes: There are plans in the works to carry stuff for the men folk. -
Review from Jean K.
For some reason all the stuff in this store looks like something from Björk's closet.
Everything is made from super high quality natural fibers like cotton (organic of course), wool, etc. Everything is very earthy and soothing and feels great to the touch.
However, I think this is the kind of place where the clothes look much better on display than on.
You need to have a certain style and attitude to wear something that looks like it just came off the loom and was thrown together in 5 minutes (in a very artful way).
Although this store is pleasant to visit, the style and price (probably on the high end even for Hayes Valley) stop me from getting anything. Even the baby stuff is waay pricey (yes, even more than Lavish).
I mean, yes, it's nice to get quality stuff that no one else will have, but you can achieve the same effect for a lot less. -

Everything written above already, all great stuff, but what am I after?
5 STARS for Vivian Westwoood thigh-hi stockings, knee-high socks, and wild little footsies.
I LOVE STOCKINGS. You can buy me little gifts here and send them to my atelier. Really. I'll even respond with little Polaroid thank-u cards of me in my NEW STOCKINGS!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh and they have all this fab Japanese stuff in every shade of neutral as well. Suddenly the madness of the stockings makes sense. It's all about styling.
And yes, they're bloody expensive.
Well, you pay for therapy, right???Listed in: put your money where your mind…

YEP, that was pretty much how I felt when we went in there.
$118 for a cotton tunic. OMG.
if that is your cup of organic, zen-inspired, lemon flavored green tea, then by all means.
$98 for a button up shirt for a 9 month old. (OM freaking G)
At that price, do your mommy friends a favor and give U.S. savings bonds! LOL.
At this rate, even though this is the only game in town when it comes to Japanese import textiles, I'll just wait for our next trip to Japan... -

I definitely agree with Mia and Mag.
Store is nicely done. Clean, neutral, very Japanese. I like the presentation. They sell hip up and coming items from Japan. And store staffs who is not the owner are nice but some of them have heavy Japanese accent.
But owner lady? The worst customer service I've ever gotten from any retail store or actually any service industry.
I understand her garments are important merchandises for her, but her attitude of looking at you touching the item, snapping at you as if I am going to make them dirty, and doubtful behavior when you ever try to return an item or any sort of thing that she may not like, is definitely unacceptable.
I am a PAYING CUSTOMER.
I felt mistreated as a customer.
I don't have to go there to get hip Japanese items anyway. Never ever go back there. -

After passing by this store numerous times when it first opened, reading the great reviews, and then seeing the store move locations directly across the street, I figured it's time to pay a visit....little did I know what I was getting myself into!
I must admit to not being as well-rounded in Japanese aesthetic as my hapa-self should be, however I can still appreciate the simplicity and design of each piece of clothing and jewelry in this store.
Everything is unique, natural, highly wearable, comfortable and gorgeous. I love how hip & unique, yet totally classic Japanese design is.
I bought a few pieces to take on my upcoming trip to Italy and I can't wait to come back for more.
Literally everything here is beautiful, from the amazing necklaces & rings (I haven't taken my 10K gold ring off since I bought it a month ago)...to the tanks and adorable kids clothing.
This is one of those amazing little gems that makes me feel so fortunate to live in the Bay Area.Listed in: Get your clothes on!!

Lovely new location, which the owner's husband has done using recycled wood. But ambiance aside, the clothing is excellent. The Japanese aesthetic includes textures, subtle color variations, some deconstructed style, and added little details where you aren't expecting them. Beautiful boots and shoes too, and the jewelry, which is very organic and elegant at the same time, is exceptional . It's expensive, but then you won't see everyone else wearing your outfit either. Camisoles are around $80, long sleeve shirts $175+, and boots around $400+. The kids section is enough to make me want to have kids. So adorable. The owner Eiko is very friendly and polite, and remembered me even though I hadn't been in for probably a year!

A sweet store with even sweeter goods. The garments are so well made and just-plain-pretty. Japanese products with careful construction and thoughtful details.
The garments aren't cheap, or even affordable for that matter, but they're beautiful with a simple aesthetic that's worth the splurge if you can manage.
Their kind-of-new space is much bigger than the old spot one across the street. The girls in the store are often quiet, but very sweet when you make the effort to converse. -

I had 30 minutes to myself while my son was taking a nap so I popped my head into Cotton Sheep and immediately found a chic and cute reversible winter hat straight from a hat designer in Aoyama area of Tokyo (which is very stylish and is my favorite area to stroll around in Tokyo).
You find the items that would take you several notches higher in fashion than the mass in Cotton Sheep and Eiko and her staff will make you feel warm and happy inside. So 30 minutes in Cotton Sheep is a transformation for both inside and out!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Kiesha R.
I was in this store a couple of months ago with my husband, before I knew the gender of my little one on the way. I swore that once I had that information, I would come back for the appropriate pair of overpriced animal socks ($22 for a pair to fit a 1-year-old, $17 for a newborn pair). So today, I was inspired to buy my little boy to come said socks - and a $98 onesie. I know, it's crazy nonsense. But I have to say, the hand-sewn designs in this store are unlike anything I've ever seen (since I've never been to Japan, where these clothes are imported from).
Definitely save this one for special occasions, gifts, etc. Unless you roll celeb style, you won't be doing your everyday shopping here.
P.S. Since service has been mentioned a lot in the reviews here - I didn't encounter any problems. I received plenty of help and experienced no snootiness. I hate to think that they've been nasty with some other folks - it just wasn't my experience. -

I have bought many a lucky baby clothing and other shit from cotton sheep, and every mommy has loved what I have gotten them.
I like getting babies clothes so much from cotton sheep it makes me what to have a baby... well it really makes me want to steal a baby, dress it up, and then return it with out anyone knowing, so that when the grief stricken mother walks back into her house after leaving a police report, she will find her baby in its crib looking might fucking stylish. She will then say "Damn baby, you be looking trs chic! Who stole you and left you looking so fly?"
That would be amazing.Listed in: Born to Shop

Cotton Sheep is a great store to get enchanting gifts. They sell jewelry by the Kyoto based Atelier Kaoru. These biomorphic/nature-inspired works are like no rings, earings, bracelets and necklaces I've ever seen. I have bought earrings for myself and my best friend and we both get complimented all the time on their understated beauty. I also got a matching ring from my sweetie who knows how much I like Kaoru's stuff. As far as I can tell, they are the only north American retailer of this jewelry.
Their children's clothing is adorable and their women's apparel and shoes are beautifully deconstruced designs from Japan. -

I love Cotton Sheep. If you love quality and aesthetics, this is a must visit.
I was looking for long sleeved t-shirts for a trip back East and my friend told me that Old Navy had shirts on sale for 5 bucks. So what do I do? I go to Cotton Sheep and buy two cashmere/cotton blend t-shirts for $118 each! Sure they're sheer and lightweight but they're surprisingly warm bc of the cashmere, great for layering. Plus, they're as soft as silk.
I also picked up an adorable buttery soft heather gray cotton button-up hoodie for my friend's baby. Red, oak brown, cream colored buttons lined center with white thermal lining striped pink and baby blue which makes rolling up the sleeves super cute!
Great place to pick up gifts for kids, girlfriends and yourself! Definitely on the splurgey side. -

Wabi-sabi imperfect perfect. I love this shop.
There's a sweetly melancholy & nostalgic vibe to this place, as though it still remembers an Edwardian summer in Japan.
(Sounds odd, I know. But go in and you'll see what I mean.)
So many subtle shades of pale gray, charcoal gray, not black, off-brown, moleskin, creams & vanillas --- and all of it whisper soft. Delicious organic cottons and cashmeres. Pin-tucks, too. As well as simple boots and dainty, almost Victorian shoes.
Very nice helpful, friendly staff. Pleasantly distressed wood floors and surroundings.
The jewelry is elegant and delicate, the perfect compliment to the understated clothing.
I only wish it weren't so expensive! But then, it's Hayes Valley after all... -

Step through the door and enter a softly lit fairyland of sparsely populated racks upon which delicate pastel garments of organic origin flutter as if begging to be touched.
Everything in here is super gorgeous and super imported, which also means super expensive; simply breathing the air in here makes my wallet cry in pain. But in a good way. It hurts so, so good. And the styling! The Japanese know how to dress. Yow.
I left empty-handed today, but next time I might not be so fortunate.
Obligatory addendum on service: The staff is polite and friendly, but don't expect them to be over the moon about assisting you on your mind trip through the hallowed halls of sticker shock. -
Review from Corii L.

I think this is the only place in Northern California that carries Kaoru jewelry. The only other retail location on the west coast is probably somewhere in Seattle or L.A. I absolutely love Kaoru jewelry, but it's the kind of thing where I save up on the bread for years in between each Kaoru purchase. I wore my new Kaoru two-tone, cascading, flowerlet earrings to dinner the other day, and my friend Maggie says, "Kaoru?" Delicate, painstakingly crafted, *distinctive*. Granted, we probably pride ourselves on this sort of obscure exquisiteness.
The woman who helped me with the jewelry was extremely patient as I determined which items to purchase. I know, this is a stupid time to buy gold with the market up as it is, but I just had to have it.
I also bought some unbelievably beautiful over-the-knee Vivenne Westwood (but made in Japan) stockings. They're black with taupe criss-cross webbing and tinseled fuschia, orange, and violet fringe/gauze at the top. I *shocked* myself buying these because for the price of the stockings I could have bought gas to fill up the tank of my compact car twice over. (See, gold is up, crude is up. Where this consumer spending confidence comes from beats me. It's a reactionary state.)
If money were no object (which it normally is, but I was gripped with a bit of insanity stemming from stressful work and a third, or is it fourth (?) mid-life crisis) Cotton Sheep hits all the sweet spots of taste and environment: clean aesthetic, rustic earthiness, Japanese-eye-candy colors and brights, and a lavish eye for the thoughtful, spare detail. It is actually quite a skillful mix that the owner has wrought here. -

11/7/07 update:
I went in last week with some birthday dough to finally buy the earrings I'd been coveting all year. The owner asked if my boyfriend had been in a couple of days before. She said he'd looked at the same earrings, but didn't buy them because he wasn't sure if I wanted silver or gold. I bought the earrings (silver), and at her urging, I pointed out a few other things I liked. She even took down my ring size. I don't know which is cuter: my BF for remembering how much I like this store, or the owner for putting 2 and 2 together and prepping for his return!
*********
I stop in this shop frequently (like, every time I walk by during business hours) to lust after the jewelry. Delicate, original designs in silver and gold. I haven's seen anything like them before.
The clothes are a little earth mama for me. But that's not why I'm there. -

The clothing collection is so nice. They have beautiful scarves and children's clothing along with women's.
The store people are very kind and cute. :)
I would've given 5 stars, but the cost marked one star out as they are pricy, and another one for their return policy... store credit only. -
Review from Paul K.

Four stars are for the neat three-sided box that they put the gift in. One star for the gift. Well---one star out of one left---so pretty good. I agree about the understated elegance; my girlfriend is not so much into fauz-western $125 belt buckles you find in the Hay. Va., so the nice siliver pendant I purchased was more appropriate.
I even found it cute that they had the Japanese shopgirl put on a Japanese accent... but then I made her laugh and out came a thick Southern drawl ... go figure! -
Review from Margaret K.

I disagree with some of the other reviewers - the ladies that work here are nothing but gracious to a fault, and encourage you to touch, try on and admire the clothing. Sadly I don' t fit into many of the lovely things/styles, but the items that do work are keepsakes and worth every penny.
I am not Japanese, but never have felt anything other than welcome. I only wish I could buy more and ensure that they stay in business - they are a truly unique spot in a spotty shopping city. -

As far as I know, this is the only store in San Francisco that carries Japanese import clothes I've been looking for!
I originally found this store in search of children's clothes, but I ended up buying something for myself! (well, I'll still have 6 more months until I give a birth..LOL)
Although the store did not have maternity clothes, one of the clerks, Takako-san, picked a few tunics that were loose or stretchy for me, and everything I've tried on was super comfy and soft. I love the layering style, the neutral color, and of course, the size which is just perfect for a petite Japanese woman like me.
While style, size and pricewise, these clothes may not be for everyone, the clothes will make great gifts for someone or kids. I was also aware of the high prices and had to limit myself to get only a few accessories like a scarf and legging, but the quality of the garments is definitely worth the price you pay for.
As for customer service aspects, the owner, Eiko-san, and Takako-san were both very helpful and friendly to me, as well as to other nonspeaking Japanese customers. I will definitely recommend this store to my friends and coworkers, and come back to shop again. -

This is a gorgeous boutique carrying Japanese designers. I love the selection of patterned socks and tights! They're expensive, but I don't mind treating myself once in a while. Minus for the less-than-friendly customer service. The decor is warm and inviting, the staff not so much. I'll upgrade my rating of Cotton Sheep if I'm treated better the next time I'm there!

I always love peeking in this store in Hayse Valley. It always has great little jackets and sweaters and the lines are Japanese. You always feel like you are wearing a one of a kind piece. In fact I think Aiko (the owner) only gets one piece in one size. The children's clothes are unbelievably cute but unfortunately they are practically the same price as the adults! So, I stay away from that corner. The down side is that the owner showers you with attention when you are buying things but quickly casts you away if you choose not to.

Review from A J.
San Francisco, CA
You don't even know...and neither did I before stepping in and started *feeling* the clothing.
Yes, the place has a wonderful selection of women's and children's clothing...but, since it was a Thursday (I only try on women's clothing on Tuesdays, and children's clothing on...er, um never mind) I made my way to the dude section. And while it may be the tiniest little corner, the recently added menswear alcove is a true oasis. If your clothes have to feel, as well as look good, then this is definitely a shop that you should check out. The aesthetic is certainly a unique one, but even beyond the Japanese-rustic look, all you have to do is pick up any item and give it a feel. It's a playground of textures; somehow combining rustic stiffness with pure comfort. Much of modern fashion sacrifices longevity for perceived comfort and style...often resulting in pretty, but ultimately disposable pieces. Whoever is making this stuff is just obsessed with both process and detail. Me likey. While it may be a foreign, even unfamiliar style...there's definitely something classic and universal about the presentations.
The owner, Eiko couldn't be more pleasant...and unlike the staff at another hoity-toity denim purveyor in town, didn't judge me for the "I'm so not worthy" jeans that I wore into the shop. She was more than willing to have me try on all manner of cuts, sizes, and colors just to make sure that I found the right pair of denim for me. She even made me take my pants off (5th star!) so that she could lay some of the store's jeans on top of my own and get a better feel for what might work best on me. In the end...the perfect combo of size, cut, color and wash wasn't available, so I had to make due with a couple of smaller items...Hopefully, my size will come in soon and I'll be able to enjoy my new indigo scarf. Until then...I'll just have to take comfort in the best fucking socks I've ever had. And if you think that's an extraneous expletive...try them on yourself, then we'll talk.
PS. Dan V. you are an evil, evil man. Thank you.
PPS. The shop gets a regular stream of folks from NYC calling them up for clothing. SFers, wake up...it's a backyard boogie.
PPPS. Even though their receipts and this listing (currently) says they're at 573 Hayes...they're at 572 now. Don't get it twisted. -

KAPITAL Jeans is a jeans manufacturer from Okayama prefecture in Japan, a remote area home to arguably the finest denim mills in the world. Kapital jeans are reknown for their indigo recipe which produces what some denim experts (*ahem*) consider to be the richest and bluest dye available.
Eiko, owner of Cotton Sheep, is currently the exclusive importer of KAPITAL jeans in the United States. They carry a raw 14oz. classic model as well as a finished/washed version. But more importantly they carry the Zipang, which is a beautifully hand-finished raw indigo-dyed jean which is perhaps (maybe only to the Jomon from 45rpm in NYC) the best jean you can find in this country. Warning, it ain't cheap, but it also has a 14k gold rivet in the watch pocket. I actually spoke with the owner of Kapital earlier this year on a trip to Okayama, and he mentioned that he loses money on this jean, but that he produces it as a labor of love. Infamous Yelp photographer Toro E. recently travelled to Ebisu, Tokyo to purchase this very same jean, you can be just like him, but you only have to go to Hayes Valley.
They also carry tons of women's and children's apparel, kind of that elegantly casual rustic high-end look. Posh Japanese magazine GINZA recently did a focus on the best stores in the best cities in the world (ie, Colette in Paris) and Cotton Sheep took the crown in San Francisco. -

Socks shaped like animal paws, or doggies, or kitties. Excellent selection of cute clothes for little girls and I think some mommywear too. Priced more toward the trust-fund-baby end of the scale but really neat place to get a giftie for your stroller-pushing ex-drinking-buddy's new pride and joy. The cute little socks are by far the best things in there.

I love their monster socks (the baby always gets a compliment when wearing them). The customer interaction was a bit too kansai for my taste (the ownerish woman asked our ethinicity, then went on to offer her opinion on how "cool" my mom is and how she and I don't look alike at all (what's that supposed to mean!?)). The clothes are not my style either...a bit overpriced when you calculate the yen vs dollar. The socks are the sole reason for now (no pun intended).

First impression: cute!
But within 5 seconds of being in the store, the owner lady said to her employee "a little weird, huh?" in Japanese. I turned around because I understood what she said and saw that she was clearly POINTING at my friend, who happen to dress a little differently (but it's San Francisco!). Umm.. can you wait at least until we're out the door before you talk crap about your potential customers? It doesn't matter that she said it in her language, it's just plain rude. I should've cussed her out, but I'm hoping she'll learn some customer service skills before the store closes down! -

Walked in on a Saturday afternoon. Browsed the clothing, chatted with the sweet-tempered, helpful clerk.
Wandered over to the jewelry counter, where I waved to both clerk and owner to see a few items. Owner came over. I asked a few questions, she briefly showed the items then angrily grabbed them away before I could even try them on.
Massive fail. So sad that this is my neighborhood. -

I love this store for the baby clothes - specifically the socks. They make the perfect baby present and are really unique. I love the little animal claw ones, and they are pretty reasonably priced. Other than those, not much else is reasonably priced. Lots of very thin, artsy clothing, but I have trouble even conceiving the idea of spending $250 on a gauzy sleeveless shirt.

Ah Kaoru jewelry: precious pieces to define organic elegance. Where the clothing has boho chic safely nailed, its the accessory case which is hardest to overlook. Delicate flecked feminine... ok yes, i do have a new ring and its lovely ;). Service wasn't gushy but i rather prefer the understated vibe.

If you aren't on a budget, or you are, splurge here. I haven't found a place that carries the Japanese style I crave in forever. Cotton Sheep gets it. If you can't splurge for yourself, then grab some cute baby gifts there. I found some funky baby socks that look like dinosaur feet. The owner is truly hospitable.
