I Love This Place. My husband and I came here last weekend for a much needed three day weekend. We stayed in the ocean front, patio room, and had an amazing view of the sunset. We went down the road to De Palo & Sons, got a few bottles of wine, some cheese, and a baguette, and enjoyed our provisions while listening to the crashing waves.
It is just a short walk to the beach from the Cottage Inn, and I definitely recommend walking down the pier in the morning. We woke up early, got our free continental breakfast, and took a long stroll down the beach. It was a truly memorable weekend. I recommend this place for anyone needing to escape reality... even for just a few days.

I took the dog and beautiful company with me and had a wonderful stay here for a relaxing long weekend. We were literally a five minute walk away from the beach. The stairs are a bit long to go down to the shore, but it's an amazing sight to see once you're there. The dog swam at the beach with us and I don't know if dogs are allowed there, but nobody said anything about ours.
The room was cute, but unfortunately the inn did not allow dogs to stay in the ocean view rooms with a king sized bed. We had to face the parking lot and got the dog her own bed since there were two queen beds in the room. Here are some cool things about the Cottage Inn by the Sea:
-Dog run in the back is like your private back yard
-Fire place (very romantic)
-Clean smelling sheets and blankets
-Great location for the beach
A few cons which is why it does not get 5 stars
x The breakfast needs a lil' sprucing up like eggs/bacon
x The room was a bit noisy since we faced the lot
x The shampoos and soaps given will dry your skin out like crazy

I didn't get the oceanfront view or anything, but the price was right to be next to the beach. Was able to negotiate a discount from my employer, so that was nice too.
I'll start with the negatives. The pool is kinda small, but then again, you are next to the beach. There is no A/C in the room either a tiny bathroom. I'm not complaining, just pointing out some observations.
What I loved was the nice ocean breeze coming through the open window at night. I swear, I haven't slept that well for over a few months. The fireplace is pretty nifty too, and there were many family friendly amenities like a microwave, fridge, and wireless internet. The continental breakfast was pretty good too.
All in all, great value and will probably stay here again if I make a trip down to Pismo Beach.

My best memory of the Cottage Inn by the Sea is falling asleep with the fireplace on and listening to the waves crash outside our window...and I so wish I was there again, instead of sitting at my desk reviewing it.
I stayed here during a Memorial Day weekend a little over a year ago and had the best experience! We had a ground floor, oceanfront room that was beautifully decorated and included a small patio where we would sit and enjoy a glass (or 3) of wine watching the sunset. Even though it was a holiday and the place was booked up, we were never disturbed by other patrons or their children...which is rare in such a small place. Included breakfast was eh, but it's free and better than nothing. The only reason I am not giving this place a 5 star review was the price, but that won't stop me from returning.

While planning a recent trip to SLO, the Mrs. and I found out about this place. And we're glad we did. Clean room, nice bed, friendly staff and a good continental breakfast (cereal, toast, bagels, muffins, fruit, coffee, OJ, burn-it-yourself waffles, yogurt). The room had a gas fireplace, small fridge and microwave, cable TV, and a decent price.
It's a short five minute walk down to the beach, but it's down a few flights of stairs. That said, it's one of the few hotels in this strip that has beach access from the property, as far as we saw. If you don't want to walk the stairs, there is a small pool and hot tub. Our room got a little noisy in the morning with the windows open, but you're going to get that at most of the places on this stretch as they are right off 101. Ocean facing rooms are probably more quiet. Either ask for an ocean facing room, or put one of the pillows over your head.
While it wasn't a concern for us, the hotel is pet-friendly, with specific pet rooms. There is even a play area for pets to socialize.
All in all, we were happy we stayed here instead of one of the two-star, more expensive places in SLO. It's only a ten minute drive up, and we were closer to the wineries. We'll be back.
Do yourself a favor if you insist upon staying here... upgrade to an oceanfront room.
At well over $200 I foolishly expected more than a painfully small, humid room where the windows looked directly onto the parking lot and walkway. So, couldn't open windows or keep the shades open... No prob, a/c... Oh wait, the a/c is the window and a ceiling fan. Heater is a gas fireplace that I'm convinced would be the source of carbon monoxide poisoning.
My neighbors didn't seem to have a problem hangin out in open windows drinking bud lights from beer-can-cozys. Not my crowd.... I'd rather spend more and be able to actually have the shades open and not have to hear doors slamming and kids running in the parking lot and breezeway.
It appeared relatively clean overall. But at $250 for a non-holiday, no way.
We stayed in a pet room with my chihuahua and were very happy with the cleanliness, the comfy beds and the great location. Add to the equation free breakfast, a fridge and microwave, patio for the pup and a fireplace for the chilly nights and you get a wonderful place to hang out in the cental coast for the weekend.
Nice little hotel on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The rooms were charming and clean, the continental breakfast was great (fresh wafflles, breads, pastries, hard boiled eggs, cottage cheese, yogurt, cereal . . . the works), the staff was nice, the fresh cookies in the afternoon were a nice treat, and it was a great location. The only drawback, is the rooms get a little warm and the only AC is the balcony door or window being open - I guess that is pretty standard for this stretch of coastline.
We stayed here a few years back and really enjoyed our stay. Our room was clean and bright. Nice location and driving distance to downtown and the pier. We would go back there again. They accept dogs too.
My family and I stayed here last week and were satisfied with our stay except for a few things. First of all, there was no air conditioning unit in our room (I'm assuming that this is the case with all the rooms, but am not sure). In its place were windows and a ceiling fan which were adequate, but it took a few minutes for our room to cool down. However, the room was really muggy when we entered it after having been away for a few hours (despite keeping the fan on). Also, the bathroom decor and fixtures were old, and the ventilation in the restroom was poor.
It is not an exaggeration when previous yelp reviews commented on the small swimming pool. It only takes 3 or 4 people in the pool to make you feel crowded in.
I only bring up the A/C issue because we had our 2 month old with us and would have stayed at another place with better ventilation for his comfort. I wish I had known this before I booked our reservation.
I'm sure that there are better places to stay- we noticed 2 Best Westerns in the same area s the cottage inn and wondered if that would have been a better choice.
We really enjoyed this place. It was so cute! I felt like I was staying in a Hobbit town with the cottage style look. The ocean view from the room window was great! They had a nice little garden area right on the cliff that you could sit in and enjoy the ocean.
The room was decent, it wasn't claustrophobic, it was clean, and it smelled nice. The decor was tasteful and attractive. We especially enjoyed the fireplace in the room. We left our door open to get the wonderful ocean breeze in our room.
The breakfast was great. It's been over a year since we stayed there but I remember a splendid Belgian waffle maker where you could make your own waffles, boiled eggs, cereal, bacon, fruit, and sausage.
We were lucky and had a fairly quiet person/people above our room, and didn't really see any "unsavory" types during our visit. Mostly older couples and families with small children.
The pool & hot tub were great while we had them to ourselves. Very relaxing and pleasant, you could see the ocean from the hot tub! We decided to leave when children started piling into it though.
We were within walking distance of Pismo Pier (1 mile) and rarely drove anywhere because we were also in walking distance of several great restaurants! Steamers of Pismo was a favorite and was only .3 miles from Cottage Inn.
(Date of visit: September 2006)
I went to the Cottage Inn for the first time this past weekend. It was great.
I got an ocean-view room, which was totally worth the extra money. It was on the ground floor, so we could just walk out into the garden. We also just left our door open to get the great ocean breeze in our room. Our room had a gas fireplace, HBO, free wireless, and allowed our 70lb dog.
The continental breakfast was great - there were waffles and sausages, as well as the usual yogurt, cereal, etc. Yum. I got mine to go and ate it while watching the ocean.
It's also pretty easy to get down to the beach via the hotel next door's stairs - a really lovely morning stroll. The beach is great for dogs. Very shallow water, and a very wide beach. I saw lots of dogs off leash.

Pismo beach is beautiful, but this place definitely didn't win any points with me. We originally requested to have a roll out bed placed in the room seeing that we needed an extra bed for me. When they denied, I was disappointed, but when I actually arrived at the room, I understood why. The room was tiny, and smelled a little off. For paying over $300 a night, I expected MUCH better in terms of my surroundings.
Also, in order to get down to the beach we had to practically repel down a towering CLIFF of stairs... Now I'm the first one to just suck it up and do it, but GOSH that was painful!
I wouldn't recommend this place... It didn't impress me at all.
This is the third time I've stayed here. Usually I stay at the Embassy Suites in SLO (more so because I want to maintain my SPG status) but the Cottage Inn offers nice, clean, comfortable, decent-sized rooms with a fireplace, a small frig, a microwave, and robes. Oh and also 2 bottles of water to hydrate before going to bed from a day of tasting in wine country. :o)
Although I haven't had it, the breakfast is supposed to be pretty good and is free. This is a pretty decent place considering the price is only about $109/nt during the week.
Good friends of ours told us about this place and we went one weekend with them. This is our favorite place to stay when we go to Pismo Beach now. We stay here twice a year for a little get away. Once in the summer and then in the winter.
The rooms are very comfortable, very clean, with a fire place, Internet access, cable t.v, a place to dock your I pod, a little refrigerator, microwave, and even robes.
We get the room with ocean view. Oh what a treat!!! We aways bring our little girl daisy, our dog. Beach access is closed but you can get it from the place next door. Check out the photo that I posted of the sitting area.
Folks this is the place to be if you want to relax. They have a pool and jacuzzi, continental breakfast is good, more then the average continental breakfast I believe, just don't put your hard boil egg in the microwave like my husband did or you will have a mess to clean!
Every thing is close, so close that we walk. You can go to the pier, going shopping and of course go eat some good food! Pismo has so many great restaurants. That's a whole different review....
Coming soon.

We just got back from spending our long weekend (Sat to Tues) at Pismo/Cottage Inn. The young woman who checked us in could have been "warmer", but the service overall was adequate. We booked a single king room, but were given a room with two kings instead. That was fine because it gave us extra room, and placed us away from the street--nice and quiet. The room was reasonably clean (there was dust in some corners and on ledges in the bathroom, but my husband accuses me of having OCD when it comes to cleaning, so it's possible that no one else would notice), but did smell strongly of whatever detergent/bleach they use. The smell dissapated after a day of leaving windows open. The fireplace was nice, even though we didn't use it much (too warm). The bathroom has a pocket door, which I don't care for, but it wasn't a big deal. The toilet wasn't working properly our first night, but they fixed it promptly the next morning as soon as we informed the front desk. One of the beds had zero support on one edge (box spring broken?), but I forgot to mention it to the staff. Breakfast was fine, though nothing special--cereal, make your own waffle, oatmeal, breads/pastry, coffee, tea, juice, hard boiled eggs, cottage cheese, whole fruit. The coffee at breakfast was good; coffee in the rooms was not so good, but that's kind of normal.
One observation: No A/C? It was in the mid-70's all weekend, which made for a slightly warm room. It must get hot in the summer.
As for the outside of the motel, there was ample parking and the cottage look is very cute. The pool and hot tub are small, though, so get filled up quickly (we would've liked to use the hot tub, but it was busy whenever we were free and it closes at 10pm). There's a nice area to sit and take in the views, though you are on a cliff, so don't expect to be able to walk onto the beach. The main drag of Pismo Beach is very close by, so the location of Cottage Inn is very convenient.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and felt that we received decent value for the price we paid (averaged out to $104/night before taxes). However, I wouldn't pay much more than this. I don't have any complaints, but it's a basic motel room with a few nice touches and pretty good service.
Best 3 day mini-vacation. Close to the beach. Upgraded to bigger room. Breakfast was good. Only complaint the pool and jacuzzi right there in front of everyone. Really small.

Awesome place if you're traveling with doggies. You'll get the front room facing the road, but the little fenced in shared yard area more than make up for it. The fireplace in the room really adds to the ambiance.
Continental breakfast spread was well above average with make your own waffle (though no sausages when I was there). Nice selection of coffee from a local place.
Internet access also free, though connection can be a bit iffy.
Front desk is very helpful and super friendly.
This quaint and cozy place topped off my stay in Pismo. The staff here is super friendly and helpful. Room was cozy and warm with a gas fireplace and heater in the bathroom. Continental breakfast has a nice selection, nothing extraordinary, but all fresh.
The only downside of my stay here was that their direct beach access had been blocked off as they were doing some construction to build a new path. Other than that, great place to stay.
What a disappointment. More like White-Trash Inn by the Sea. On the plus side, the staff were very responsive and helpful. The room was large & clean & overpriced. BUT:
There were a bunch of people staying in the room above us and they were so very, very loud. We only saw two of them - 2 Kevin Federline lookalikes on the balcony, drinking beer & smoking. They were so loud & obnoxious. We called the front desk who told us there were only 2 people registered in the room, both women. I had to call 2 times 2 nights in a row, it only stopped for a minute or two, then the shouting & running & dancing went on & on... I had to go out and buy earplugs.
Also, the pool & hot tub were full of similar types - very trashy - swearing in front of my toddler, smoking (despite the no smoking signs) and stubbing them out on the ground, littering, etc...
Also, they advertise laundry service & HBO, neither of which was true. The pictures on the website are misleading & out of date.
The last day we were there we were in our room when all of a sudden we heard one of those LOUD bass-boom cars, the kind that don't even play music, just noise, in the parking lot a few yards from our door. Windows rattling, our toddler crying, the whole nightmare. I called the front desk and to her credit, the young lady said she would look right away. After a few minutes I heard tires squealing & the noise drove away. The front desk manager called back & said she banged on the windows of the van playing the noise, the people inside ignored her, swore at her, then as she was calling the police they drove off. SHE TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE AT THE POOL ALL DAY & WEREN'T STAYING AT THE HOTEL.
So, if you think Britney Spears is elegant, if you think trailer parks are great, if you think Fresno is the capital of western civilization, then this is the place for you.

After some hemming and hawing I decided to give this place four stars due to the friendly, helpful service and the outstanding views. Our room was decent, but did have some issues (fireplace wouldn't operate correctly, toilet seat broken, screen missing on one window). I was not impressed with the "deluxe breakfast"; I've had better at Hampton Inns and Best Westerns. One other thing...the clientele at this place seems to be hit-or-miss. We ran into some rather uncivilized guests which I found distasteful to my peaceful weekend.
cozy interior decor? check.
stunning views? check.
just a few minutes away from the only place in california where you can ride dune buggies? uber-check.

Not much to add....helpful, friendly staff, great room with all the amenities, including the sounds of the ocean all night, great breakfast, great value. I cannot think of a reason to stay anywhere else when in Pismo Beach!
