19 reviews for Cotijas Mexican Grill
Just as good as El Patron except they have a drive thru here&It's open a little later than their sibling location down the road in Mira Mesa.
(copied&pasted from my El patron review)
4 stars for Variety& Well priced combos.
The things I like here:
Mini Tacos-Adoboada!
Crispy Beef Tacos
Fish Rolled tacos(only place aside from Los Panchos that has em), and last but not least...THE BURRITOS. YES. ALL CAPS FOR THE BURRITOS. THE EL GRANDE BURRITO&THE BREAKFAST EL GRANDE BURRITO. They double wrap their el grande burritos...that's how huge they are...the breakfast el grande comes with bacon, eggs, potato, cheese. What I Love about this place is that they let you substitute things in the burrito-NO HASSLE unlike some spots that wanna be fuckers&charge you extra. When I get the breakfast el grande, I like to substitute the potatos with HASH BROWNS...yes HASH BROWNS(they also offer a hash brown burrito, but you're better off getting the el grande for a buck&a couple cents more)! sometimes i'll substitute the bacon for sausage. One of the greatest breakfast burritos ever.
El Grande Breakfast burrito=Certified DANKness.
Onto the non breakfast El grande...it's a double wrapped beast with carne asada, potatoes, salsa fresca, lettuce, sour cream & cheese.
The meat quality isn't the greatest, nor is it the worse...i'd say its a bit above average. But for the amount of food you get, the price, and the fact they let you substitute things in the burrito at no charge...I aint bitchin.
They also have a Burrito/Rolled taco combo available for only 5.99
It comes with a carne asada burrito, 3 rolled tacos&a bottomless drink.
Awesome deal if you ask me.
Solid Menu.
Man! Iunno about this place. I've only eaten here a few times. Since Carne Asada burritos practically tastes the same as every other Carne Asada burritos, it's basically the best food from here.
- 3 stars for customer service: Everytime I go there i'm always having a hard time communicating with them. Like they don't know what I'm talking about. Like today, I went to this Cotijas to get Carne Asada for my dad AND he also wanted some chilly. I went through drive through ... got the burrito and I asked for chilly.
Well, she said "heuhhhh..?" and I said again, "Chilly..." and she tried saying "Chileeehh?" As if she had no idea what CHILLY was. I had to say chilly 4 times...It wasnt like I was talking softly. Then she said, "oh well you're going to have to get it at the bar, I can't get them for you" (where you get hot sauce and etc.), with an attitude!
Uhhhhh, hellooo, I just went through drive through for a frikkin reason! And she wants me to go inside the store just to get some chilly. WHY DON'T THEY HAVE SOME LITTLE BAGGIES FOR 'TO GO.' Like they do with hot sauce.
I'm only giving this place +2 stars because food here is alright. Nothing to go crazy for. I've had their rolled tacos, not so great. I've had their carne asada chips, I've had waayyyyy better. I've also eated their fish tacos, ehhh.
Where's the real Mexican food!????
Took the drive thru (probably for the last time).
They add WAY TOO MUCH salt to their food.
Ain't healthy.
Gotta move on.
Change the name from Cotijas to Saltyhas. :)

The sauce was TOO SALTY!!!

Beans beans beans! I used to have their carne asada burritos and carne asada fries a lot back in the day, until I heard of a couple people getting food poisoning. Whether Cotija's is at fault or not, I'm not sure, but I've been going here solely for their fish tacos because they are SO much better than the ones from Rubio's or Wahoo's. They are big, come in two tortillas, loaded with white sauce (which I love), cabbage, and some pico.
The service is mehh. Nothing to really notice, the place is pretty big and clean, but try the fish tacos!
I love this place. I use to work at the WAMU next door for a few years so I went there often. I love their Steak and Egg breakfast burrito...actually as I sit here with my Steak and Egg burrito from Sombreros I am dreaming about Cotijas.
As for the people reviewing that its "unhealthy" all I have to say is DUH! its a mexican food joint dumb a$$
Too much beans...
Probably the only Mexican food chain that adds beans to your carne asada fries or chips.
And, they add way too much of it, and not enough carne asada.
Only positives include drive thru and pretty fast service.
Other than that, the food is just okay.
Don't expect too much from this place.
Ehhh...Cotijas is okay, the food doesnt match the other local mexican/more authentic mexican joints in the area...the only better thing is that it has a drive thru...but other than that the food isnt as good.
AM: Hash brown burrito - egg, cheese, sour cream, sausage, bacon, hash browns (not french fries, sucka!) if you just read anything you didn't like, I don't care to know you.
PM: Too many choices! Best carne asada fries around. Oh yes, with refried beans, cheese, a generous helping of carne asada, sour cream, guacamole, and pico de gallo. It's refreshing to have all the good ish included, and not have to pay an extra $2 for some damn guac or sour cream!
I took away one star because they have gotten pretty expensive since I started going here um, the day they opened. I even stuck by them during the great Cotijas embargo that some kids started when they raised the bean and cheese burrito from $0.99 to $1.29. Why endure the scrutiny and roll into 3rd period with a little plastic bag with that yellow wrapper inside? Horchata. That's why. I felt so bad about taking away that star, that I gave it back because of Anuar. Anuar is the shit (crap, I think I spelled his name wrong). He hooks it up, and always gets it right. I haven't seen him in a while, but that happens sometimes. He'll be back.
Drive-thru Mexican food. Who doesn't appreciate that? Too bad it doesn't stay open til late.
My favorite! Only because I get a box of carne asada fries for about 5$. And they give a lot so it's all good. They use skinny to medium sized fried and it's topped with everything and everyone. hahajk. guacamole, pico de gallo, beans, cheese, sour cream.. free hot sauce!
The place looks a bit ghetto-ish and a lil run down, but that only means it's goooood food!
This is actually one of my dad's favorite Mexican food places, as is mine. Three things I really enjoy about Cotijas:
(1) They don't charge you for every little thing. If you order carne asada chips/fries, it will include everything: guacamole, sour cream, cheese, beans, etc. I personally do not favor beans; therefore, I ask for no beans.
(2) Rolled Fish Tacos. Cotijas is the only Mexican food place that I know of that offers rolled fish tacos on their menu. I love the white sauce they put on top.
(3) Hash Breakfast Burrito, which includes eggs, cheese, sour cream, bacon, sausage, and potatoes!!!
Who doesn't like a taco shop with a drive thru?
Very convenient, quick service, and the food is ready when you roll up to the window to pay. You get what you pay for and what I got was not bad.
Vegetarian Burrito is the BOMB and horchata.
According to some of the reviews I didn't see any green mold on my tortilla, someone must be color blind; if there really was how come they didn't let the employees know and why would you go back to give this place another try ?
I occasionally go here since it's so close to my house. Last night my daughter wanted a snack....she requested a bean and cheese burrito so we decided to get one on the way home from Cotija's. As we pulled up to the drive-thru window we were unsure if it was even open. We waited a couple of minutes and nothing. As we were driving off we heard "Can I help you?". My husband braked hard and then placed our order. We drove up to the window and waited a really long time for our one burrito. When we received it I took a bite to make sure it was not too hot for my 3 year old daughter. She took a couple of bites then my husband took a bite. When we got home he put the rest in the frig.
A couple of hours later I woke up from my sleep with horrible cramps. I realized I had diarrhea...then my daughter was up with diarrhea...let's not forget my husband...he too had it. Imagine if we ate the entire burrito!?!? We should have known since it took a REALLY long time to get our bean and cheese burrito.
After my experience and reading Rachel H.'s review, I will no longer go to this establishment. On a positive note, the man working in the drive-thru was always pleasant.
I love cotijas!! especially now that they take cards instead of just cash. And the drive thru makes it even more perfect. I have tried alot on their menu and let me just say their carne asada is sooo tasty! That's why I have designated Mondays (because I hate mondays) to be my burrito day. mmmm...now that i am talking about it i may have to stop by after work!
I know that there are better places for "fast mexican food" at other taco shops in San Diego! I've been going here since it opened and it's always been my 2nd choice after Rodrigos (but that is another story). The food is nothing special.
In all the times I've been there, I've never had a positive experience. A couple years ago I ordered a quesadilla, only to find out it was made from a moldy tortilla...I didn't understand how they could fry the quesadilla without noticing the large green spots on it. A couple years later, I decided to give it one more chance and go through the drive-through for a quick burrito. I waited literally almost 20 minutes in the drive through for my food, one machaca burrito. It was a Sunday morning and not even crowded. I didn't understand, but that was the last time I'll go there.
It's decent. The carne asada is pretty tough and flavorless. It's suffices when I want Mexican food and would rather just go thru the drive-thru on a lazy weekend day. The not too far drive-thru-less Rodrigo's is my usual spot.
The breakfast burritos here are very good and can be ordered all day...the best, I think, is the hash brown burrito.
Not as bad as people think. This is another hole in the wall type of mexican restaurants. The fish tacos is their best seller at $1.19. It used to be $0.99 but I guess demand was too great for em. The portions are large for what you pay for. Food isn't exactly healthy but hey, what mexican restaurant is? Their quesadilla is pretty good also. They use huge flour so it looks like a dub rim. Tables are no frills standard type. You will always see some suspiciously illegal looking mexicans eating there but hey I ain't border patrol!! I'm just a regular dude who enjoys cheap mexican food.
bottomline:
close, quality food.
details:
cotijas is great for those in PQ who want a quick fix. Prices are good, selection is great. nothing to complain about. the steak and cheese burrito is great. the dos manos is quite the challenge. was a favorite of mine.
Usually the food is pretty good, but it's not amazing Mexican food. There are a lot of better Mexican places for the same price and better service. Even when they are not all that busy, they seem to take a long time getting you your food - especially in the drive-through line. Considering the quality of the food and the atmosphere of the shop, the price isn't that great. I had one bad experience where the meat of my beef tacos didn't seem entirely done. I was starving so I ate it anyway, but trust me, I regretted eating it later. I didn't go back for a while but decided to give it a try a few days ago out of convenience. The place has a typical taco shop atmosphere, complete with the sort of not perfectly clean feel. Cotijas is almost a Penasquitos favorite, but I really don't see the hype. It's just a taco shop, and an okay one at that. I'll go there once in a while, but I'm definitely not an addict. (Especially after those undercooked tacos!)
