Cotijas actually started out down the street in a small shack on part of the site that is now Home Depot.  As a kid I used to go with my family for their amazing carne asada burritos.  Surprisingly, after all this time and having moved to a slightly different location their food is still great and cheap.

I live in London now and when I go home to San Diego, one of the first trips I make is back to Cotijas in Lemon Grove.  The carne asada burritos are the best I've ever had and their chicken enchiladas are excellent, too.  I also usually pick up a bag of hot carrots if I'm there as well (it can be hard to find them now).

The atmosphere is, eh, of a taco shop.  You can't expect much ambience, but Cotijas is in a newer building and is clean and if you decide to eat there, not a bad place to be.  Take out is convenient and you can order from the side window or go inside to order.

You just can't beat this taco shop.  I will be really sad if it ever goes under.

Cotijas is nothing special to look at.  The building is cheap looking, and by smell alone, you can tell they probably buy their cleaning products at 99 cent City.  I prefer to eat outside, but the tables outside provide awkward seating.

These things are easy to get passed once you open your wallet and have their food.  I usually despise those "authentic mexican" stands because the food always tastes cheap and bland.  I was shocked how flavorful Cotijas was. They could charge so much more for how awesome it is.  Best fish tacos I've ever had.  Oh my God the chicken quesadilla is gooey and delicious.  Hell, even the dirt cheap cheese quesadillas are awesome.  The staff is very friendly.  The place is always full of customers.  It's a hole in the wall you'll want to return to again and again.

One of my FAVORITE taco shops. They serve you large portions at good prices. ($15 = 1 HUGE Quesadilla w/ guac, 2 beef tacos w/guac, 1 HUGE chicken Enchilada plate w/ rice & beans. My wife and I had to save half our plates cause we were stuffed. They have the best american-style Guacamole, creamy and flavorful. They take awhile to make the food but you get it nice and hot.

UNBEATABLE BEEF TACOS & SHRIMP BURRITO

Another Great Mexican food shop is just down the block, El Pollo Grill

This place is safe. They specialize in little but their food won't send you home with an unpleasant rumble in your tummy either.

They use "American guacamole" which is that version with sour cream mixed in... It's alright I guess. I'd prefer two separate scoops of each item though rather than the blend. The hot sauce is pretty watery too.

It's hilarious that you can order from the sidewalk "walk up window" or walk in the building. These options are separated by about twenty five steps.

Word of advice: If you're in a hurry or just feeling particularly sneaky, survey the amount of people outside waiting to order while you drive into the lot. If there's a ton, call in your order (the number should be up on the sign). They'll tell you it should be done in about ten minutes. You successfully cut everyone in line at that point so hang out in your car, listen to the radio and in about eight minutes walk up to the window saying, "Hi, I called in." They ignore everyone else and hand you the food and you're off. Who's got time for lines, I mean really.

Right now, getting some Mexican food sounds amazing so I might be more generous with this review.
Shrimp burritos and the veggie burritos are really the only things worth getting. And the combo plates are pretty delicious too.
My one complaint though, is that they do not know how to wrap a burrito properly because every time I go get one, it's falling all over the place which completely defeats the purpose of a burrito....

The carne asada is super weak here but the hot sauce is decent.

But they make a MEAN shrimp burrito.
Hopefully headed to go get one after this review is over.

When I met my husband up in the Los Angeles area, I took him to my version of Mexican food.  Poor guy, having been used to San Diego Mexican, he tried to order Carne Asada fries... Nope.  I didn't quite understand his disappointment until he took me to San Diego for the first time and we had Cotijas.  Wow.  Mexican Food in L.A. Sucks.  Cotijas is just a short drive down Broadway for us and I go probably once a week.  I love the Rolled Tacos and Tamales.  Service is fast, Horachata is tastey.

This is my regular taco shop. The food is good, and the service is fast. It's your run of the mill San Diego taco shop.

A typical fast food Mexican restaurant, drive through and all.  There were loads of options to choose, which left me undecisive as I love to try everything on the menu that looks/sounds good. I finally settled for the garlic shrimp burrito.  It came out huge and overstuffed with lots of shrmp and rice.  They also have a bottle of salsa so you can squeeze on as much or as a little as your taste buds can handle.  Ok salsa, I have had better of course. The burrito was really greasy.  It seemed as though everytime I took a bite, more oil would ooze out the bottom of the burrito and hands were literally drenched in oil halfway through the burrito.  I had to use serious napkins to wipe my hands every single time I took a bite.  Overall, I left feeling bad for eating all that oil.  I shoud have gotten something else had my cousin's friend not reccommend the shrimp burrito, baaaaaaad reccomendation. Everybody else got either taquitos or fajitas and it defintely looked better than my oily burrito.

This take-out mecca is simple, clean, fast, well organized, and counter service is attentive.  Call in your order and you can pick it up in 15 minutes.  This little joint is busy - good vibe among the people that work there.   Carne Asada plate is my son's fave; chicken enchiladas is mine. Good, fresh tortillas, salsa, guacamole. Traditional combinations,  generous portions. There is some inside and outside seating, but recommend take out - the emphasis here is on delicious food, not on atmosphere.

This place has Great food. The wife and I go there regularly for the Shrimp Burrito A La Diabla which I highly recommend. If you've never had one they are spicy and the flavor is to die for. Service has always been good for us there. I would highly recommend this place. Also if you don't want to go inside just order your food ahead of time and pick up at their pickup window.
