Review Highlights
My friend and i decided to try a new bar last night so we stopped in for a drink. It was fun, though we were the only girls in the bar. A nice very drunk guy bought us a drink. He tried to talk to us but we could not understand his thick Irish accent. His friend was not as drunk and fun to chat with.
-The bartender was very friendly.
-The woman's bathroom was very nice and clean.
-The place had a cozy atmosphere.
I don't go to many bars, and am not Irish, but had a heck of a great time here one night. There was a big group in from Ireland celebrating a wedding. I think the owner's a policeman or police family and there's a big police shield replica above the bar. There's a balcony or porch in the back for to enjoy. And to smoke. A very hardworking barkeep bought us a couple of drinks.
To digress, brogues are cool whether you find them at Costello's in the Sunset or at old Star Bakery at 29th and Church St.
Where you'd hear things like,
"How are you, Mrs. Sullivan?"
"Just fine Mrs. O'Sullivan."
And the soda bread was great.
Love this place! Went in last (Tuesday) night, and it was not hopping, but I was the only non Irish person in the place... and the only female as well and it was sooooo fun talking, laughing and BSing with drunken Irish men! Some of them were so fresh off the boat, I had to ask the bartender, a GORGEOUS Irishman from near Donegal, to translate for me! They have Strongbow on tap, but even the Strongbow (like the Guinness) tastes differently than the stuff you get over in the UK or Ireland, but it was good enough I guess. I just loved being there, I felt like I had transported all the way back to the land of the little people! I will definitely be going back again, maybe on Thursday or Friday night when the place picks up a bit more.
I literally live right across the street from this bar. And have for a couple years now.
I love being able to go out on the roof and listen to the excellent Irish crooning on karaoke night. Or the delight that is live band night!!!
I would love any bay that was across the street from my house. It makes stumbling home quite convenient.
Oh and they have STRONGBOW on tap. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG I WANT TO BATHE IN IT!
Oh maan. I only really ever went to this place because it was like 5 feet from my apartment at the time. They have karaoke on sundays which is awesome when school is out cause then there is usually a good college crowd. If you go on an off sunday then you will have super old creepers insisting that you do a duet with them, which of course you do because who cares your'e drunk and its fun to sing.
I have a special place in my heart for them, but I def won't be going out of my way to go here. If I happen to be carousing around taraval then I'll definitely pop in and say hello. Or maybe sing hello.
For those of you commenting on the guy singing 500 miles, he sings it every sunday and if you dont like it then fuck you. That my friend is part of the charm of costellos, and i think you need to prepare yourself for that.
Ok i love/hate this place sooo much. It's basically a sausage fest. I felt like i was with a bunch of footballers. It's not bad when you go with a group (be sure to include guys) but CAUTION LADIES!!!! if you go with a few females prepare to be approached...a lot. They've got this horny mob mentality in there... Even if you say No thank you... they will still persist.
If you've been to england or ireland you'll know what i mean. Because its pretty much like that their too. It's filled to the brim with real irish guys..
I was waitin for tem to stard singin Finnegans Wake er somtin! Thats make irish accent.
Bartenders can be really really rude. It's the one and only time I have had a bartender be that awful to me. And I have no idea why?
It does smell like four deuces but what a great spot to hide out.
Where are all the Irish folk? Why, here of course!!!!!!
I stopped here a few times when I lived a few blocks away. I went with a previous roommate because the couple that lived around the corner from us, their niece and niece's friend were house-sitting from Ireland while the couple was in Ireland. Got that??
They suggested we pop on over as they were doing some type of dinner here at the pub, so we decided "What the hell, let's go hang with the Irish folk!"
We came with the idea that we'd hang out for a little bit, but when we arrived, it was freakin' Thanksgiving Irish style! Ok, not really, but they were doing some crazy ass bbq fest and they were like "Here, have foooooooooood!!!!!" So we sat and had us some food.
Turns out the same night was quiz night. Woot!! So we stayed for a few rounds which was fun. We had a bit of an advantage being the Americans when it came to cultural questions, but it was so fun.
The regulars were welcoming and super nice. The drinks were flowin' and it was a great way to spend an evening just chillin' and answering fun questions.
Want a taste of the Irish? Head on over here. If you have a bit too much to drink, the L-Taraval stops just outside so no excuse for drinking and driving!!!
Ahhhh...I've found it! The bar that makes anyone who is more than one generation removed from Ireland incredibly uncomfortable and those *lucky* enough to be straight from the Old Sod feel right at home!
For my 100th review, I knew I wanted a place that was near and dear to my heart. This place definitely is, and to top it off, they didn't fail at getting me tipsy on a random Wednesday night (I may or may not be typing this in my hungover state). Right on! They have delicious kettle chips to munch on while you pour the Jameson down your gullet and the bartenders are all so nice. I didn't meet one person there who didn't have a brogue so thick that I could barely understand them nor did I meet anyone who was sober. I came here with my family who literally had gotten off the plane from Ireland 24 hours earlier and they felt like they were right back at home (somewhat counterproductive). Someone (ok, it was my cousin) started singing some Irish songs and everyone joined in and it felt like we were in a pub in Cork.
If this place weren't a 40 min bus ride from my house, I'd be coming here every night, or at least as often as my liver would allow. Dart Night on Wednesdays and Karaoke on Sundays...because nothing starts your week off like a drunken rendition of "I Will Survive".
An Irish pub with Irish people. We walked in and the guy at the mic was singing 500 Miles (which is by a Scottish band, OK whatever) but the drinks were cheap and the pours were generous.
Here's what sealed the deal: the bathrooms are an absolute pleasure to pee in. Just immaculate.
Oooooh Girls.
Feeling daring? You better be.
Do not, I repeat DO NOT come here without a wingwoman.
This can be a scary place...mostly men, 90% Irish-born, and usually drunk for days and ready for more.
This is not a place I ever found a guy to date seriously, however, I did find FUN and ADVENTURE....so go for the thrills, NOT the long term relationships. ;)
I live across the street from this bar. Its fun with friends and always an experience. I went in here once on my way home from school for a beer and I was not only the only person under 40 and Irish, I was female! Everyone was cool and I they offered biscuits which go great with beer. My friend still meets up with this guy she met there. And yeah, the hilarious things that happen when watching the bar from roof top is the best.
Live music is hit and miss, but they've had some really good bands here. Crowd is lively and yes, definitely Irish, but not in a "Yeah, I'm Irish, so what? You wanna fight about it?" sorta way. More like, "I'm Irish, you're drunk, let's form a huge dancing/jigging circle and kiss each other" sorta way. I only drink beer when I'm here (it's a fucking Irish pub, not the W Hotel), but service has always been quick and friendly. Oh, and definitely worth mentioning-the pristine bathrooms.
Perhaps the only Irish bar I've been to where I actually feel like a part of the crowd. If I lived in an Irish seaside town, I'd expect it to be a lot like this place.
I don't mind trollops as long as they are pretty trollops. ugly girls should not be trollops. ugly girls should be silent and sip their pints. otherwise they become g'damn annoying.
first impression: dyke bar. but the pours are good.
The Four Deuces is at the far corner of the Sunset, so its patrons have a sort of an isolated seafarer feel -- I can hang with that. Karaoke here is good because the emcee does most of the singing, and there's rarely much of a wait. The place gets bonus points for a decent variety of nonalcoholic beer.
THAT'S RIGHT, PEOPLE -- SOBER KARAOKE.
Good Hearty Cheap Drinks. Jose Karaoke Guru on Sunday's. Dancing and singing to the hits, Irish Style. That's what you get when you hit up the 4 Deuces.
I found this place thanks to my 1st cousin's obsession with Karaoke. She follows the DJ's all over the Sunset and Richmond.
I like to support our neighborhoods. Taraval Street is one of my haunts.
This is a spacious old Irish school bar. The Sunset is notorius for it's Irish. Fahey's up the street on Taraval for instance. Neighborhood stalwarts.
Shout out to all my crew on Taraval St! and the Sunset Viking Crew! Infodiva is here reppin for the 415. West of Twin Peaks. You better recognize. I've got the 411.
From the outside, it looks like a dive - in fact, it's far from it. There are people smoking right near the entrance, so when you're seated near the door, it makes no difference. When we went, the Warrior's game was on, so there was no live music. It is that spacious inside, I can imagine with a band and crowd, it can be really niice and cozy.
If you're an Asian girl, you have found a place to chill with THE cleanest bathroom. If you're an Irish man, you have found HOME.
At first I was a little confused how Costello's could have a 4.5 star average and Shannon Arms only 3.5...after all, Costello's is even more intimidatingly Irish than SA. I mean, I felt like I was crashing a private party here. Not that I got any surly looks; the Costello's crowd is at least a little more genteel than the movers-&-plumbers types at SA. But at least SA has the occasional SF State student to make you stick out a little less...wait a minute, that's it! That's why the ratings are lower there, because all the SF State students wander in and get scared away. Costello's is out where no one will ever just stumble across it.
It's funny, though: one thing I love about SF is very little of it feels exclusionary. But possibly the toughest nut to crack for me has been these Irish pubs. And the irony is I'm Irish! I mean, I've actually stood in Greyabbey at the grave of my Great^N Grandfather, born 1722. I'm always tempted to play the Irish card in these situations, but they'd probably pry out the fact that we're actually Ulster Scots, and I'm not sure how well that would go over.
Oh well. Maybe the karaoke or quiz night would give me an in. In the meantime, I'll head back up Taraval to the true bar of my people: Dragon Lounge.
I like this place. Spacious. Pub atmosphere. Its like being in Ireland cept you don't have to pay the $800 flight. Its a bargain! On Sunday evening, they hand out snacks -Hot dogs, meatballs, pretzels....
Downsides: Cash only. Difficult to get a taxi outta here.....
UPDATED
Costellos is totally hit or miss.. sometimes its fun, sometimes its not.
Its still a nice bar with good service but I wouldn't make it a destination for the night.
The people friendly, The bartenders are really nice
it felt like a little bar we always go to in Killarney called Orians
I went out there to see a family friends band perform. Like the other reviewers, I think we were the only people there without accents.
I had a great time though. I'm not accustomed to strangers being so friendly; perhaps this is just a cultural thing.
They appear to take darts pretty seriously at this place. And guiness.
It doesn't look like much from the outside, and it's really out of the way, but it's worth checking out.
things i like: it's literally half a block away
monday night football nights!!!
sunday karaoke
things i dislike: depending on the night some people can be rude
when i walk my dog late at night, all the drunk guys
outside yell at me
the clientele isn't very young
how in the flip this place gets an average rateing of 4stars is beyond me!
it is the same 29 irish dudes in there everytime... the prices are not that great... and its always troublesome to some extent since there are no females around so the guys are just looking to get ripped and beat the shit out of each other...
on the other hand... i have been there when it was good with a mix of woman... (very rare)... and they have live music from time to time... you can cash your checks there... and... well its a good place to get ripped in get into some shit if the mood catches you right and you wanna break someones jaw in four places... haha...
guess i hate it and love it for the somewhat the same reasons... have fun!
Marsha! Marsha! Marsha! I can't believe you snagged the first review on this place! Great irish pub with a bar shaped like a ship's bough. There are real live irishmen sitting in the corner playing cards for money, whoopin' it up having a good ole time. One of the few places I've been to in San Francisco where other patrons will buy rounds of drinks for the bar just because they are having fun. Great "appetizers" (bowls full of barbeque chips) and they have Strongbow on tap. Another warm and hospitable irish pub deep in the heart of the Sunset.
Went while participating in my first "Tara-crawl". Liked it ok, but there was a dog there and lots of drunk Irishmen to harass me and my friends. A good time though!!
I have to love this place because it's right accross the street from my apartment! Especially the sunday night kareoke. After party at my house?? HEEEEYYYYYYYY!
2.5 stars for this Irish bar in the Outer Sunset. It's definitely not a destination, but a decent place to drop in if you're in the area and hankering for a Guinness.
OK... I've known about this secret spot for sometime but I guess that secret got out! A great hospitable authentic Irish bar in BFOS with harps from all over Ireland, some fresh off the boat with accents so thick you can't understand a word they're saying! Plenty of story-telling and shenanigans to go 'round! Tommy, the adorable owner, cooks up BBQ for everyone on the weekends, buys rounds of beers, and generously sponsors my soccer team. Yes, I have been that girl drinkin' with the boys, playing Acey Duecey and takin' their money. Yes, I have been that girl twirling on the dance floor until I got dizzy. And yes, I have never turned down a free shot or Jaeger bomb. Oh, but you can still keep that part a secret : )
Am I the only one who isn't fond of this place? I've been here a handful of times, and yet this place was nothing special any of those times and the bartenders were twice as rude and uncaring as always. I've been to my share of Irish bars, so I know what to expect, and ths was about the same. Lots of Irish lads and ladies sticking to their own crowds, with some really bad Korean kareoke on the side. Sundays nights can be packed, but I still need MORE than just bodies!
I love this place.......I never felt more comfortable in any place as I do here. My best friend and I are here every sunday night and we have so much fun!!! Waiting for next Sunday night is what gets me through the week. The bartenders are so RAD!!! As my best friend stated here the bathrooms are always clean, and the Guiness ia always flowing!!! I LOVE THIS BAR
I can't remember how we ended up here after a day at the Stern Grove Festival. Maybe we were already drunk to start with... I don't go to a lot of bars but this one I liked because the crowd was unpretentious (at least, during that night we were there.) Plus, karaoke in a bar is fun!
Great bar! I used to work here 3-4 days a week and I love it! Very authentic Irish bar with cheap drinks and always great "craic" : ) Live music on Friday and Saturday featuring a wide variety of music. Kareoke night is always a blast and the busiest place in the Sunset on Sunday!
this is my local. basically a really fun irish bar on the weekends, and attended by dedicated locals on the weekdays. if you like the irish temperment, you will like it here. also, there's a great karaoke night on sundays! look out for me...i'll knock you dead with my madonna!
After a long night of drinking at The Goal Post, one of the Sunset's less known Irish Pubs, I asked the bartender where pubs of a similar fabric were located. She mentioned in a thick accent that I should head to 33rd & Taraval to find someplace known as the Four Deuces. Four months later my buddy and I were able to stop in and it was worth the wait. Painting on the glass behind the bar and directly on the shelf of all the shot liquors you could read, "Old Rogue." There is also a mention of that name on the outside glass that flanks the green painted boards of the pub. But now to locals the place is known simply as Four Deuces. On a quiet Tuesday night, a group of Irish men were holed up at the corner playing cards for a large pot of money. When one gent one, he bought a shot for my friend and I. Nice, just like Dublin. They hold a weekly quiz night on Tuesday, and have a stage for bands and many lanes for darts. The atmosphere is very cool for the Sunset and smoking here is relegated to the street than in the pub like some other local Irish pubs. In any event, definitely worth a stop on your Sunset bar crawl. Cheers!
