FOOD
As a new vegetarian, Cosmic Cafe was my first Vegetarian Restaurant in Dallas. I had the No Bull Burger, and it was DELICIOUS. It was the best Black Bean Burger I have ever had. I'm not sure how healthy it was since it was smothered in cheese-which tastes good-but beware there is a lot of cheese on that burger. I will definitely come back and try some of the other things on their menu. The restaurant offers enough variety and satisfaction for even the most skeptical carnivore.
ENVIRONMENT
In terms of the environment: It's quite eccentric. It has a cool hippy vibe. It's not so great for crowds and the tables are quite small, but the there are some seats that can accommodate 5-6 people. I didn't notice that it was particularly dirty, but I also didn't notice that it was particularly clean either. So that part is so so to me.
SERVICE
The service was quick and they were very attentive when it came to getting food, but I was a little confused about what to do once I got into the restaurant. I wasn't sure if someone would seat me or I could sit wherever I wanted. A sign would have been nice. I also felt that it took a long time to get my check. After I eat, I like to get in and out, so that was really my only complaint. -

This food tastes like something your boss's wife would make for you at an awkward dinner because she's been taking ethnic fusion classes at the local community college. I mean, they put cream cheese and pico de gallo in my food. This is not a brilliant culinary move, this is just gross. And it's not like the food was good without it. I mean, even my mango lasse (mango-yogurt drink) tasted bland. How do you make MANGO taste bland??! The worst of tex-mex meets average Indian.
They do get 2 stars for awesome decorating and mood. They've got live musicians playing indian music with reaaaaallly cool decor. I can only assume the reason this place is rated so high is because the interior distracts people. However, the food is at best decent and at worst gross. Dallas should demand better out of Indian food.
FYI: If on a date, be prepared to wait outside in the cold, or stand awkwardly next to a table while you hover over other people eating. There's no waiting area and the place is cramped. But like I said the decor is really cool so there's a lot to look at. -

This is such a neat, eclectic little place. The sampler plate was good, especially the samosas. My pizza mystica had an excellent flavor and was a nice size portion. But the highlight of the evening - the vegan strawberry cake. Best strawberry cake ever! It was really moist and tested fresh. No Pillsbury box mix over there.
If you're looking for a neat vegetarian place or just a change of pace from the typical Dallas vybe, check this place out. It's groovy and what-not. -

"The most bohemian place in Dallas" or so I was told by the guy at the table next to me. The Buddah delight and chai were wonderful. The cheesecake was even better!

With an elaborate hippy decor aesthetic that makes you feel like you walked off an ashram on a beach in Goa, and a healthy fresh vegetarian menu, Cosmic Cafe may still leave you scratching your head, or possibly poking your eyes out, with the disjointingly slow service and narrow menu that sometimes doesn't feel creative or ambitious enough.
The moist vegan cakes (strawberry and vanilla Chai) and the samosas are very good, but on my Sunday brunch visit, the coffee pot, and the hot water for the tea was empty for the entire, very long, hour we were there.
Cosmic Cafe's ying and yang isn't at all balanced and there are better vegetarian places in Dallas, but if you're feeling like a healthy meal, try the Cosmic Stir Fry, you could get one here for under $12.

The food is delicious and I find my carnivore friends enjoy eating vegetarian when we go. Plus the place is so artistically fun. Every single inch is covered in murals. They have a great porch when the weather is nice and at times even have live acoustic music.
The "must try" is the chai tea. Mmmmm.... -

I've been here a few times over the past 15 yrs. It's such a cool looking place and a great vibe. The food isn't that great. The stainless steel water cups maybe authentic Indian style, but I don't like the way it tastes when I drink out if it.

This place just makes me happy! The ambiance is eclectic and entertaining- there isn't an inch of space without something interesting to view. Really fun menu with lots of variety...I don't consider this an authentic Indian restaurant but the food they do serve is just tasty and satisfying but still feels good for you. I always love the Rumi's Falafel.
Like other reviewers have said, this place isn't for everybody...but if you have ever even THOUGHT about trying it then this place is for you and I promise you will love it. -

I love their samosas! Cosmic is a great one-of-a-kind vegetarian place, I just wish they had more parking. It's located in a very cute 2-story house on Oak Lawn Ave with a lot of vibrant (East) Indian decor. I've even enjoyed a few of the Tuesday night meditation classes held in their upstairs area.

The Cosmic Cafe might just be the most Un-Dallasy place in Dallas. The D has more vegetarian places than some might think but the combination of an ALL vegetarian menu with the quirky faux Tibetan facade, meditation center upstairs and super late opening time on Sundays shows this a place as laid back as Austin. The Counter Culture left only the tiniest physical imprint so this piece of Haight-Ashbury in Oak Lawn stands out as a worthwhile destination.
The food was very good. Some people who complain about expect Indian food. If you are after true Indian cuisine that is all veggie try Madras Pavilion in Richardson. The cooking at Cosmic is South Asian inspired, with many of the spices etc used in more familiar Indian dishes being used. The menu features pizzas on Naan and even hybrid Tex Mex dishes featuring veggies. This place is worth a look if you are open minded and desire a lot of creative vegetarian options. -

Definitely dig the vibe. Having just flown in from LA, I felt like I could have been in Venice. The food was good (cosmic stir fry and buddhas delight), but nothing mind blowing. Great atmosphere. I didn't try the deserts so I'll have to go back.

Well, my friend and I have been to Cosmic Cafe 3 times in the last couple of months, and the food has been excellent each time. We will go back and try other entrees, but in the mean time we highly recommend the lentil soup, the Buddha, the stir fry veggies with yogurt dressing, and the No Bull Burger. The only reason we did not give it 5 stars is that some of the food is too spicy. It would be better if the chef would use less hot spice in the preparation process but provide spice at the tables for those who prefer hotter food. Tone it down garcon, tone it down.

Went here for takeout because my honey was craving curry. 1 star is for prompt service and quick food and it's cute inside. If you enjoy authentic Indian food, this might not be the place for you. We ordered the curried vegetables, nan, and samosas. The curries veggies had very little curry flavor, was dry an had entire pepper kernels in it. Pretty gross. The nan was more like store-bought pita bread one would use to eat cheap hummus. On top of it all, it's kind of pricey. If you're looking for good ndian, keep looking.

ok... this is more of 3.5 stars, but whatever. 4 stars is cool.
Anyway, the reason we went is that we've passed it in going other places... it's a bit odd looking, but it's pretty cool. It's like an odd/cool combo.
Walking in, the decor is... unique. Not bad, but not "home-y."
The menu is vegetarian/indian type and has some awesome creativity going on as far as names go. It takes some thinking, but it's clever.
The food was great... for vegetarian. (you see... I'm a carnivore... sorry). I kid, I kid, it was awesome. Everything was fresh and well made. The beer was cold too! We had the pizza, and the stuffed peppers, both great options.
If you're looking for a place to relax, there's a meditation/yoga room upstairs also... quite interesting. Just a side note.
Overall I'd say that you should try this place out at least once. Some people love it, but it's not everyone's cup of tea [and they do serve tea!]. We enjoyed it, and may be back when we eat with our vegetarian friends. :) -

I was really disappointed with Cosmic Cafe. I had heard so many great things about it, but it didn't live up to my expectations.
The selection of food was really sub par. Yeah, it's vegetarian, but there isn't a lot of variety. There's so many things you can do with vegetables, but they definitely lack any creativity. Almost everything comes with a tortilla, or bread of some type. Not a lot of options if you are going gluten or dairy free. You can get away with being a vegan there if you order carefully. But even if you do, it's likely they'll mess up your order.
We ordered an appetizer and juices. They brought us the wrong appetizer... and were not apologetic about it either. Finally brought us the correct appetizer, with our meals. Except they completely messed up my meal, which they had to remake since I am going dairy-free, etc. Not apologetic about that either. At this point I'm pretty frustrated and pretty darn hungry, but the service has taken so long that all I want to do is get out of there, so I ask for my meal in a to -go box.
Thankfully, she didn't charge us for the app or my meal, so that helped put out the fire. The food really was good, but I will not be going back. -

One of the best vegan/veggie options - not that there's many - in Dallas. The decor looks very New Ageish in that it eye-searingly yet interestingly combines whatever of any and all cultures can be interpreted as ambiguously "spiritual." Awesome fish tank, though.
Quite a good selection with large portions; my only real problem with the place (other than the rich-kid-hipsters-posing-as-hippies-waiters, which are easily tolerated since they mostly tend to wear deodorant and don't speak in condescending platitudes like the kids at Spiral) is that the flavoring on the dishes is either completely bland or ridiculously spicy - there's no middle ground. I'd prefer it if they offered spicing options like a lot of Thai and Indian restaurants do.
It's rather cramped inside; if the weather's at all tolerable I recommend sitting outside on the covered patio. The parking's not great, but that's to be expected in the city. -

Eh..I didn't really like it :( I really wanted to like it because it just has a cool vibe to the place. I'm big on atmosphere, and the murals outside as well as the meditation area upstairs are neat, but the actual food I'm paying for was mediocre. We had the hummus, which was alright. The "tomato dreams" soup was NOT GOOD. I love tomato basil soup, and although expecting a flavor twist, it just didn't taste good at all. I had trouble finishing my cup. The spinach enchiladas were tasty however. I might give it another shot if I'm feeling merciful.

Attempted to make a visit after all the reviews. Sat around at a table for about 15min with no service.
It was also hard to find a clean table, pretty much all empty tables were dirty and still had left over dishes on them. The place wasn't busy, maybe 10 people total inside and out.
We were sort of greeted when we arrived but no help. The server just said with a slight attitude "I guess I'll have to clean a table". I didn't know, but I thought the point was to have a clean restaurant.
After sitting around for 15mins, we left. No one said anything nor cared. Parking is also a pain and not to mention the traffic on oak lawn out front. -

When we are craving vegetarian this is our to go spot. We love this place. The food is delicious. Our favorites are the trinity tacos and our kids love the falafel pita pockets. Their hummus is great - not the traditional tahini laden kind but a lighter tangy flavored one.
We love that it is in an old house and the vibe of the place is so relaxed. The service is very unobtrusive and laid back. -

Chai...bottomless, spicy, wonderful chai in dairy AND soy varieties. OH YES! What a fun place to sit and chat with friends while sharing a ton of good food. Sharing really is the best thing to do if you've never been before - I got the Buddha Delight, which comes with a whole variety of stuff, and then we split a yummy pizza style dish. Try as much as you can and then come back another day for your favorite!

For being a meat and potatoes kind of girl I never would have thought I would enjoy Cosmic Cafe, being as it is a vegetarian place and all. I've been her numerous times over the past 10 years. The place is really cute, and has a nice patio (front porch?) in front, which is good because the inside is pretty small. A few of my favorite items are the veggie burger, and pizza. Of course... The patty on the burger is made out of black beans. The pizza has a bunch of veggies on top of a piece of nan. They have a lot of different entrees and sandwich type stuff too. I wasn't too crazy about the hummus.
I'm also happy to report that they have a decent selection of beer. You can get wine too. Win! -

This place is so good I don't even miss the meat.
I get the Buddha Delight every single time and its amazing! Not sure about the other dishes but I really enjoy the Buddha Plate.
Dessert is really good too. Once a long time ago they had a Lemon cake with Avocado icing. For someone who hates Avocado I really enjoyed the cake and icing. But I'm pretty sure they don't have it anymore.
The Chai tea is really good too, be sure to get you some from the self serve tea dispensary.
Service is what you'd expect, and the place is totally ZEN. Everyone is welcome here, I've even taken a few country GOOD OLE boys there and they felt comfortable and enjoyed their meal. -

Wow. First of all this place is decorated to the hilt. Very interesting. I was there around 6pm on a Thursday night and it was packed. The manager/owner seemed a bit stressed because it was incredibly busy and yet he had a long table reserved for the Dallas Vegetarian Meetup. Unfortunately, that group was trickling in slower than the non-Meetup diners, who were forced to wait for a table to open up. I think in the future it would be best to schedule such groups at off hours.
Nibbles: I shared the Sufi Special with my two friends. It contained a large samosa, a couple of papadams, pita wedges, hummus, cilantro sauce, and tamarind sauce. The hummus and papadams were excellent. The rest of it did not impress me. Watery tamarind sauce and an average tasting samosa. We also ordered garlic naan, which turned out to be wedges of pita bread topped with oil and garlic powder. So not a naan, and so not impressive.
Main Course: I finally settled on the Bombay sage. It was a scrumptious lentil mix rolled into a tortilla accompanied by mango chutney. I loved this part of my meal. The lentils were uniquely flavorful. It included an ordinary side salad, which came with a non-vegan dressing even though I specified I was vegan when I ordered.
Dessert: I shared two types of vegan cake: vanilla chai and chocolate. The vanilla chai was outstanding. Simply amazing! I can't even begin to describe how moist and yummy it was...so much so that I am now inspired to attempt to create it at home. The chocolate cake was boring and actually lacked flavor. As a chocolate lover, I don't usually say that chocolate lacks flavor.
Beverage: I had endless refills of a refreshing iced tea.
Service: I enjoyed my food, but was shocked at the general lack of knowledge the staff had when it came to vegan food. I mean it is a vegetarian restaurant, so usually places like this will note what dishes can be veganized and/or what dishes are vegan by nature. We had at least three different servers at our table. The first one shocked me when I asked her if a particular meal was vegan. She looked confused and then said, "Yes. It should be OK." Are you kidding me? That is a completely unacceptable answer in any restaurant, but especially a vegetarian restaurant. She should have known the answer, or offered to ask the chef. I later asked the manager/owner if items in the Suri Special were vegan and he paused to think before saying yes. When I ordered my meal from yet another waitress, she assured me my meal was vegan but then someone else served it and it had a creamy dressing.
Suggestions for improvement: Allthough I enjoyed my dessert and meal, I think the staff needs to become more educated on what items are vegan. If you work at a vegetarian restaurant, you are going to get vegan diners. Trust me! Next time they revamp their menu, it would be a good idea to indicate vegan items.
Atmosphere: It was crazy loud the night I was there, but what a funky atmosphere. I would give this place another try, but realize I would need to quiz my server thoroughly to find suitable vegan dishes. -

ohm...
I can already tell approaching this place, from across the street, that it is not going to be a place of calm. A place of a lot color and excitement sure, but total serenity? Maybe not. Not to say this place is not freggin' awesome, because it is. Everywhere you look there is an Indian relic. Buddha, and elephant, an elephant head with a tiger body, a tiger body with an elephant head, beads, serenity fountains, highly ornate beaded scarves, Tibetan flags...do you want me to keep going? Oh no? Okay.
It is an old house fashioned into what seems like a Shirpa lounge. There is no way to relax when there is so much going on. It is not an uneasy feeling but an, "oh my God, how did I not know this place existed?" feeling. There is even a relaxation room upstairs for yoga and meditation sessions.
Oh yeah it is a restaurant too! Their menu is a hybrid of vegetarian, Indian and Mediterranean. Ranging from vegetables in curry sauce to a hummus plate. Torn between the Socrates Plato and the Buddha's Delight I settled with the Buddha's Delight. Very good! But it also gave me incentive to go back and try the other items on the menu. It's like going to a grocery store hungry - you want everything on the menu, because it all looks yummy. They also have very delicious samosas and the naan is naan to bad itself.

This place looked crazy! Floors and ceilings were covered with colorful artwork that's totally cosmic. As crazy as the place looked, there is this sense of calm as I sat there waiting for my food. The waitress was very helpful in aiding me with picking out some dishes. Obviously had to go with some hummus, which turned out really good. Perfect consistency and came with lots of nan bread as well as some other things to dip.
For the main there was so much I wanted to try, that it was suggested I try the buddha's delight. It came with curried vegetables, dahl, samosa, pappadam, rice & nan. Yummy! Most people think that you won't get full off of a vegetarian menu, but those people would be wrong. I had to meditate/crash-on-the-bed after I got home. The food had me all zen'ed out and very happy. Don't let the vegetarian classification dissuade you from coming here. You will be very glad you gave it a try when you come! -

Love it.
The good is pretty light, except for where it's not (anything with "mozzarella" in it will be greasy). Manga lassi was very satisfying, along with the eggplant sandwich. My friends ordered a-la-carte: a well-spiced dal with basmati rice or samosas and soups. The food kept coming. Desert was similarly well done - fruits and nuts on a plate with whipped cream and naan. Not really special but good enough for everyone.
The unlimited (3-cups max) chai was some of the best I've had (like chai is supposed to taste, not the Starbucks version). Also, the card games on the table make for good conversations with you and your party.
Live sitar and tabla music played by a couple of hippies definitely topped it off.
Highly recommended. -

This place is so wonderful. I highly recommend Buddha's Special, with an extra side of pappadum. The bottomless chai is homemade and unlike other chai I've had, in a good way. Also wonderful: hummus plate; samosas; socrates plato; herban renewal. Love the vegan cheesecake when they have it.
The over-the-top hippie/60s/Indian/artsy aesthetic is so fun. The walls are covered with things like stuffed roosters, books by gurus and yogis, a fake fireplace, an old sewing machine, a giant mural. There are windchimes and stained glass windows and a stuffed cat and cloth hangings. And it still looks clean, classy, and orderly. There's a cute garden out front with a fountain and more fun statues and stuff. You can sit on the porch when it's nice out (or in those cozy Dallas summer rains, and watch the rain come down).
The service is good and everyone is friendly. Maybe from meditating so much and eating such delicious, wholesome vegetarian food! -

Everyone that knows me know that I am not a vegetarian. In fact, I would take offense if ever you were to accuse me of such treachery. However, I am also proud to say that I SUPER heart Cosmic Cafe, but you have to know what to order if you're a regular old meat eater like myself.
As far as appetizers, the hummus here is a given--it's not too garlicy, fairly consistent from visit to visit, and the nan (flatbread) they serve with it is toasted warm and tasty. The eda "mamma" is also very good for an app, but skip the pappadam, it's been bland and boring every time I've had it.
For the meat eater's main course, I suggest the dharma bell (stuffed bell peppers) or portabella trance (portabella mushrooms with nan). The "I hate eggplant" dish is also incredibly yummy, but if you truly do hate eggplant, it would be a poor choice.
If you're a vegetarian or a veggie-friendly carnivore, you can pretty much order anything on the menu here and leave happy. I've had about half of their dishes and I've never been disappointed, so you really can't go wrong.
The service is always good, if not just slightly slow, the pricing is very fair, and they serve beer and wine, but personally, I'm fairly content drinking ice water out of the metal cups they bring to the table. -

It really just makes me happy. The service is slow-ish, but they're so sweet that I never mind. Every single thing I've tasted has been delish! Veggie quesadillas are my current favorite, but each new thing I try becomes what I love best. I'm a committed meat eater, but Cosmic Cafe always leaves me full and totally satisfied.

After recently moving to a new office, Cosmic Cafe is suddenly a convenient lunch option for me. I've eaten at Cosmic in the past but it's been a while so I've had to re-explore the menu. I'm not even close to a vegetarian but I can appreciate good vegetarian cuisine. Cosmic tends to lean strongly to more Indian cuisine than simply vegetarian. If you're not a fan of veggies, probably not going to be you're place.
My favorite items on the menu include the Samosas and the Tomato broth soup. I've also had the spinach enchiladas and the Buddha's Feast. The enchiladas have an interesting white queso sauce and a strong curried flavor. I wasn't a huge fan of the Buddha's feast but it was still decent. My coworker did enjoy the Buddha's feast so it's worth trying.
The service at Cosmic can be hit or miss. It's always friendly but no guarantee that it will be fast. Sometimes we are in and out but other times it takes extra time. The prices are reasonable for most entrees but I feel the appetizers and soups are a bit on the high end in comparison. Sometimes the music is a bit loud and shakes the wooden floors but if you sit outside, it's much more peaceful.
Overall, if you're a fan of Indian or vegetarian cuisine, it's worth giving a try. The quaint patio is a huge benefit and it just might put an extra bit of fun, exotic culture into your lunch hour. -

Very unique and funky-fabulous place. The first time I came here it was with a Buddhist date and found items on the menu that were both tasty and filling. The wait staff are decent most of the time but stressed out and panicked when the place is crowded. Parking is a nightmare at this place! They have a meditation room upstairs that people are free to see. They also have classes, never been to one. The atmosphere and food in this place are great!

Is there such a thing as Tex-Indian cuisine?
I'm an omnivore. I like vegetarian food as much as I like sushi: it's just another delicious option to explore. I know meat-lovers who can't stand this place, and vegetarians bored with it. I prefer to not look at it as a statement in the debate about whether or not meat is bad. I think of it as a damn tasty place to get unique food.
To be honest, I've never bothered with their entrees. I've stuck to the sandwiches, wraps and such. My favorite is the Fold in Thyme. Heck, offer veggies and avocado on nan and I'm there. The hummus is decent, but nothing to write home about. The samosas are pretty tasty. I'm pretty addicted to their bottomless cups of chai.
If you can, save room for their mango cheesecake (vegan or otherwise). It's the best!
The worst thing about this place, by far: the parking. There's a tiny, tiny parking lot in back. Otherwise, take your pick of the nearby establishments and hope they don't tow. Legend has it that the shops to the left of Cosmic have a strict tow policy, even if none of their stores are open. Carpool as necessary.
If you plan to go with a group, plan ahead. It's far easier to get a table for two than for six or more. You might have to practice patience as you wait for spaces to open up.Listed in: Food Addictions

This place is totally overrated.
The building is cute yes, and the food used to be amazing a few years ago but the last few times I have gone the food is just nasty.
I used to love that place, I have had most things on their menu since I was a regular for 5 to 6 years.
My favorite was the Buddhist delight which is like a sampler that has naan, a samosa, veggie korma, and rice. The last few times I went the naan was hard as a rock, the samosa was just ok and the veggies were watery and tasteless.
I say go to an actual Indian restaurant instead because this place has gone down hill. -

Royal Oak, MI
This is a vegatarian restaurant with a indian american type menu. Tried to make it a relaxing youthful atmosphere. They played meditation music inside. It was full of bright colors served you water in metal glasses. The staff was mid 20's young, took a while to have someone come to my table to take my order. My waiter was some young metro looking guy who only came to my table once to take my order acted like he didnt really care or wanted to help me find a good dish since it was my first time, had like a hurry up look on his face the 25 seconds he was at my table. then i never saw him again and another women served me and took forever to bring my change oh well it happens.
Other then that very artsy place. They sold memorabilia and statues of India like culture that was of course fake and not much value and said weird sayings on t shirts lol. Menu had a good selection of yummy looking items. I had this portebella mushroom with veggies and cream cheese in this rolled up pita bread was pretty tasty and was recommended. I devoured it quick and had hummus which was ok, had better... I was so gassy for the next 12 hours. Think Ill order something different next time I come here if I do which i probably wont cause I wasnt to impressed. Honestly the foods ok I had better at other vegatarian places. I wonder if they use organic vegatables.. But Its more about the atmosphere I think. They offer meditation classes to on the weekdays and different kinds and yoga.
