My dogs have never had more fun outdoors in all of their lives.  This was the 1st time they'd ever experienced the beach and it was great to watch.  They usually hate dog runs but loved this place.  Super clean area too..I liked how everyone was responsible and respectful of the beach.

Nico and I love the Coronado Dog Beach. We go out with our chair and blanket and spend the entire day running in the sand, swimming and taking naps. For the most part everyone is friendly although I have found some people with dogs to be a bit standoffish, not wanting their dogs to play with other dogs. They need to remember that they are at a dog beach and dogs are social even if their owners are not. I have seen one fight between dogs but it was broken up really quickly, no one was hurt, one dog just was too posessive of their ball...so it was nothing really. So if your dog loves to run and play and get really dirty the dog beach is for them!

GREAT GREAT GREAT!

This is the second dog beach I've been to (the first being del mar dog beach) and I thought this was even better. I raved about Del Mar.  It was probably due to my newbie dog beach experience, so now that I have a point of comparison, I can supposedly have more confidence in my dog beach opinion.  Parking - lots of it on the street and free!  View of the Hotel and the surf is awesome.  Clean, I didn't see any stray poops and bags are plentiful.  People and dogs are very friendly and there are quite a few small dogs as well, so Angus wasn't overwhelmed by all the big dogs.  The waves aren't too powerful and dogs seem to be able to be able to have fun without worrying about being suddenly swept out to sea.  There is a water fountain at the entrance and a hose to rinse off your dog.  You can also use this to fill up a large jug with water and take it to the beach.  If you get tired of the beach, there is a super large grassy area which is good for allowing your dog to dry themselves off after you rinse them.  That way you can just get them in the car without being wet or sandy.  There are actual bathroom facilities fairly close by.  They're as clean as a public park facilities (which is to say, not that clean and cleaner than the port-o-potties at Del Mar Dog Beach.  The main drag of Coronado (Orange) is really close by so you can spend all day in the area

There are a couple not so great things, starting with the military landing strip that's right next door.  Lots of airplane noise.  At first it might scare your dog and it hurts my ears.  I had to make sure to cover my ears everytime a fighter jet landed, and it was fairly often, about every 20 minutes or more.  It was a double edged sword for my wife who has this strange fascination watching fighter planes, but covers here ears if a fire engine blares by.  If you're the same way, the view of them is incredible as they are practically on top of you.  That's the biggest downside and it's fairly noticeable.  The off leash area is not as big compared to most others I have heard about/read about/seen.  You can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes.  There is a good length walk (comprable to Del Mar) between the parking and the beach, but I don't think that's such a bad thing since that removes the risk of your dog running into the street.  I got the sense that people were uptight making sure that they stayed with the off leash boundaries and when they did go outside the boundary to make sure they leashed their dog(s).  It seems like a pretty heavily policed area, so I would advise you to pay attention.

But even with those points, I'd drive the extra way to come here even though I live in north county.

P.S. I'm writing this after a whole day of dog activities, so if it seems a little poorly constructed, please forgive me!

This dog beach is really big and not all smelly like Ocean Beach. I ilke the dogs here better also. You dont have strays running around like wolves. no but seriously it was fun. me and my Boston went on a hot day and it was the best.

Tate and I agrees, this is a terrific dog beach for a Kerry Blue.
The setting is magnificent, the other dogs are having fun
and it appears most people pick up after their pooches.
The corner is fenced in by the Naval Air Station but the other end is open ended.  If your dog likes
to run wild and ignores your calls and whistles to
come to Daddy, you should stay at the north end only or you might want to consider one of the completely
enclosed dog parks like Balboa or Fiesta Island.

This beach is nice, but I dont think its the best in SD. Its small, and I suppose if you have a dog that likes to waddle around and dig holes in the sand this will do fine. I was blessed with a very high energy Pomeranian that likes to run and run and run for miles and miles, so this beach simply isnt big enough for her. OB is bigger, more parking, etc and I havent found it to be any less clean than Coronado beach. Fiesta Island on the other hand, thats where you'll find me. :-)

I live in Coronado and I find the Dog Beach here to be a little dull and the people sometimes stand-offish.  Not much excitement for bigger dogs most of the time and a limited area for them to play and walk around in.

I heard one Coronado beach-goer call OB Dog Beach "Ghetto," and I guess my large dog and I prefer Ghetto - there are more friendly dogs and dog games and people on OB, despite the bad rap it gets.  The area is much larger in OB and there's differing terrain for your dog to explore (dunes, sand, water, rocks, etc.)  if you have an all-terrain kind of pup.

I also prefer Fiesta Island for the same reasons as OB, although everyone should know that the city is planning on making Fiesta a virtual parking lot soon (no matter what you think you've heard about that - it's not a good thing for ANY of our dogs).

But I digress - Coronado visitors can sometimes get that "pick up your Maltese, there's a Pit Bull/Lab/Boxer/fill-in-the-blank coming!" attitude going and I've actually been asked to remove my very friendly dog from a game of ball between just one other dog and his owner because the owner didn't want his dog playing with other dogs.  On DOG BEACH, for heaven's sake.  That poor dog!

It can get a wee bit snobby at Coronado.  And I'm a local!  And it is definitely better on off-days and hours.  It's just too cramped on the weekends.

No matter what, though, I'm very grateful to have so many incredible choices for dogs in San Diego, including Coronado.  And if you have a smaller or more sheltered (as in, usually kept in your purse) kind of doggy, Coronado may be more your cup of tea.

In any case, let's keep all our dog areas clean so we can KEEP them!

This is Maddie the Springer Spaniel. I am using voice recognition software because I don't have opposable thumbs.  I go crazy for the dog breach - c r a z y, especially this one. All the moms and dads pick up the doggie caca so it is clean and I have plenty of room to run and swim. It doesn't take my mom long to park. Best of all, there are these gray and white things with wings that I try to eat but they go up in the sky. My mom is a dumb bitch on the days she doesn't take me here -- she needs to make it a priority.

Love this dog beach. I don't find people to be snobby. It is clean and it has plenty of space for my little ones. Most importantly, THEY love this dog beach. I don't think they like the walk through the hot sand (it burns their little paws). Their daddy and I try to lift them up and carry them but one of them is a bit heavy and it is tough to carry him. So, we try to run to the beach and it all works out after that.
After going to this dog beach they go home and have the best sleep ever. They really have a good time in the water (do a little swimming here and there). They both get to wear their cute scarfs and hats. Pretty cool dog park! Like it a bit better than OB.
We are very fortunate to have this park.

How can you not give five stars to a dog "park" that is set ocean side? Parking is a little tough sometimes but it's beautiful and there's a spot to wash your dog afterwards. Love it!!!

the wunderhund absolutely LOVES coming here.  gorgeous, clean, expansive enough beach, conveniently located from home, easy to find and free parking, friendly dogs and owners (although there's an air of snootiness from the two-legged variety on occasion). best part about it is after coming home, i get one tired pup for the rest of the day!

Although I don't have a dog, who doesn't enjoy watching dogs with their owners frolicking on the beach? Nice views and well made walkways. If you're ever in Coronado, you gotta check it out!

i don't think it's any big shocker that poodle is the happiest when he gets to go to the dog beach.
coronado is great because:
1.  the parking is easy to find and free (no need to load up on quarters).
2. very wide sandy beach, the tide seems low enough for poodle to enjoy the water without drowning.
3. responsible pet owners, i.e. people pick up after their dogs.
4. a dog friendly wash station.

an interesting observation, there are many pet owners that set their purses and shoes down on the dry sand without supervision.  that is, unsupervised until my unleashed dog discovers said purse and shoes and decides to pee on it.  now poodle would not do this unless another dog has already taken the liberty in "baptizing" these things.  so if you happen to be one of these trusting souls i apologize for the urine, but seriously what are you thinking?!

Every dog neighborhood needs one of these beaches within driving distance.  This is where dogs take over.....they throw sticks to the water and their beloved owners run and play fetch with them.  It's hillarious role reversal.  NOT! but it's lots of fun just watching the dogs having so much fun.

Lovely, clean beach with responsible dog owners.  I've not ever known it closed due to contamination/viral/bacterial outbreak.  Nice part is you can walk over to Orange Ave and have lunch are several wonderful restaurants/cafes that welcome dogs (if there is patio dining, no matter how "nice" the place looks, they will take your dog happily - don't hesitate to ask.)

Best dog-beach in the San Diego area. We're in town for the month & brought our 1-year old beagle with us - We manage to sneak out every afternoon to run her & of all the dog-beaches & parks we've visited in the area (Balboa, OB & Fiesta Island) this one is by far the best.

I'll always remember my vet suggesting that I not to take Sam (my first Cocker Spaniel) to Ocean Beach's Dog Beach due to its poor condition and lack of maintenance. He recommended Coronado. We've been going there ever since and never had a problem. I'm deducting a star for parking.

My favorite place to take both of my dogs.  My Golden/Lav loves it of course she just jumps right in and has a great time with her new friends that she meets, while my Pitt/Shepherd mix goes walking around and smells everything.  Anyway this is a great, beautiful place to bring your dogs and kids and swim together.  Also while your having fun you get to see several military fighter aircraft's landing and taking off, if your into that sort of thing, like me. :)

Great spot to take your dog!  Its a beautiful beach, but parking is a bitch, and its always a bit crowded.  Today I took my dog there and wasn't looking where I was walking...I stepped right in a big pile of sh*t with bare feet!!  [squish!]

The best dog park in SD in my opinion is still Fiesta Island..  Plenty of parking, acres of open land, clean & uncrowded beach, etc..

Love this Dog Beach!  My Dogs both LOVE It Too!!!

This is a summer favorite-- gets packed on the weekends-- with almost too much activity... but love the slower days here.

Gorgeous sunsets--
Fun place to run and walk with the dogs---

They have a shower area about 2 blocks South of the beach; fairly near the street.  You just need to look for it (I didn't see any signs there the last time).   You'll need to bring your a short water hose-- where you can install that to wash the dogs off.  Good to bring a friend-- or con someone walking along the side walk to hold the water for you.  It's very difficult to hold the spiket-- AND wash the dog.  That's what friends are for--- right???

-----------

This is an A Plus Beach---

------------

Health Hazard...
Have heard of a number of dogs getting anal, eye, ear, skin, and feet alergy problems if the dogs go into contaminated ocean water which has been stirred up after a rain.  Best to wait about 2-3 weeks after a rain-- before letting the dogs run and play in the water.

The water is gradually getting worse-- due to the dumpage that is being drained from Mexico and other beaches.  Unfortunately Coronado is fairly near the Mexican border--- so this is something to watch out for.

There are signs posted for surfers on some days when the water is really poluted-- unfortunately -- they have not yet posted these near dog beaches--- but definitely should.

The dogs will definitely need a serious "Bath" after this!!!

Very clean and at a beautiful location.  On Sunny weekends it's a little hard to find parking because it's all street parking. Also, there is a little bit of a trek down a sandy road to get to the beach so be aware it's not like OB where it's right on the other side of the parking lot. Also, you have to keep your dog on the leash until you get the beach, if you don't and you get caught it's a $500 fine (which would suck)

But, with that it's a little more secluded which makes it really nice.  Also, down the way there is a little water shower to rinse off your dog which is really nice.

This is a fantastic dog beach! We've been here a hundred times and not only is it clean and gorgeous, the people are generally friendly and there are tons of regulars so you'll get to know them and their dogs. I do have a bone to pick (pls note subtle pun) with a couple of other reviewers. Parking is only easy during non-beachy times (foggy weekdays~) otherwise, it's a bear. Also, 'bring a picnic' at your own risk...it's a dog beach! Take a sandwich out of a baggie and you'll have a couple of dozen new best friends and they won't all have great manners!

This is the best dog beach I've ever been to.

Of the San Diego area dog beaches, this is definitely our (Addison's and mine) favorite.  Spacious, expansive, always plenty of other people, and lacking the grunge of the OB dog beach.

Minus one star, because frankly, parking and the corresponding lengthy walk to the unleashed portion of the beach can be tiresome.  If you're like me, and were born lacking an internal compass, make a mental note of where you parked... I once spent forty-five frustrating minutes dragging an exhausted Great Dane around the side streets trying to determine if I was just an idiot or my car had gotten ripped off (I was the idiot).

Take a stroll down to the end of the beach (where it meets the base), bring a cooler and picnic it up if you like, and feel free to strike up a conversation with the friendly pet owners.  I met my roommate at the Coronado dog beach, as a matter of fact.     We'll see you there.

This is my FAVORITE dog beach. There are always great dogs and good dog owners there. It's clean, they have bags, and if you walk down a little ways, you can hose off your dog at the showers. The downfall is that if it's too hot, the path from the beach to sidewalk gets too hot for the dogs to walk on.

This is much cleaner than the Dog Beach in Ocean Beach. Maybe it's because it's not near a flood control jetty. Maybe it's also because it's not near so many dirty hippies begging for change. It's a fun place to hang even if you don't have a dog.

this beach was soo beautiful. it has definitely taken the place of ocean beach dog beach as the place shorty loves to frolic in the water. it was much cleaner than OB and had a better view for me to admire. the coronado hotel and point loma were a picturesque background against shorty diving into the water. my only wish is that there was a dog wash like the ocean beach one that was close. cause after an hour and a half of frolicking i had one dirty yet happy puppy.

i'm willing to move to coronado just because of this dog beach.
had the most fun with my animal, great to see all different kinds of dogs, very convenient and clean.
i don't know how crowded it can be, but considering it was memorial day weekend sunday morning, it was not bad at all. you have plenty of room to run around and play, also not too quiet that your dog has lots of friends to say hello and sniff.

love this place!
it's cleaner than a lot of dog places, and the location is gorgeous.
i go there all the time with my two pups, and i can't help but take pictures every time.
the water is far enough away from the road that you don't feel like your dog is going to run into the street.
people and dogs there are almost always friendly.
i try to go there as often as possible.  the dogs love it, and it's a great place for people to relax and let the dogs socialize.
