Review Highlights
I really like this place. Everything I've had here has been fresh, and it's a great place to cater from. I absolutely adore their muffins (muffin tops are the best part!!) and the individual toast/crisps. The ciabatta bread matched their tomato and mozzarella flavors perfectly, and the meal is nicely topped off with a buttery sweet cookie.
It is pricey though. =/
When my company first changed buildings, I was happy to pass by Corner Bakery every day. I was initially seduced by the delicious Chicken Pomodori, one of their signature sandwiches, which contains provolone, pesto, oven-roasted tomatoes + fresh spinach. Oh, and the chocolate chip cookies are more than half decent.
I quite often use their catering department for corporate meetings. Their catering department is courteous + will process orders weeks or even hours in advance. And they always deliver the goods.
Ahhh Coffee... nothing like a fresh brewed cup of coffee to start your day off right. The perfect compliment to the daunting full day of work looming over your shoulders. They offer it in four flavors, three of which are not that good. But alas they also offer it in unlimited refills.
* Note about the staff. They are excellent. The nicest people to start your day with. If they ask me to do a survey I always do it. They are good people.
The environment is pretty nice. I got small Latte ($2.79) and their Breakfast series Bacon Panini Combo ($4.99).
The reason why I think it's ok is because: (Act I would give 2.5 rating.)
1. Their Panini is too greasy for me although the price is decent. The baked potato is like burned... which I don't like burned food. Latte is just all right.
2. While I was eating inside, there is a man sweeping the floor!! Maybe most of people don't care. But you know while sweeping the floor a lot of dust will fly which is sad it makes me not feel like eating. I am just afraid the dust will drop on my food.
Originally went in wanting to order the Baked French Toast... They were out of the bread. So then I decided on the Commuter Croissant... They were out of croissants. Finally, after debating whether I should just cut my losses or stay, I ordered a panini and yeah, they were out of the bread, but the server, Saudia, was very accomodating. She put all the contents of the panini on a bagel and added a bowl of fruit for free. The bagel-panini was OK and proves the point why they don't use bagels to make paninis. The fruit bowl was pretty good though.
One the hunt for a good panini, I traveled farther than usual to check out Corner. Yes it's a generic chain but Id never been and thought it deserved a chance... not. so. much.
I ordered the grilled ham & swiss on sourdough -
which is thinly sliced smoked ham with melted swiss cheese, plum tomatoes, and Dijon mustard-mayo ( no tomato) and "Big Al's" chili.
Ya a little pricey at $4.75 for a small bowl of VERY average chili, generic, not very spicy... you get the picture.
Panini was very average, ok but SOO GREASY. Yuck !
Maybe it would have been a little better if I had eaten there and not traveled a few blocks? But I kinda doubt it. It's hard to rate counter staff for a lot of reasons. I can only imagine how ...unchallenging their jobs must feel sometimes ( wow ! sensitive moment ). They seemed fine, again very average, nothing out of the ordinary either way.
At $12 total not exactly a cheap place for lunch... next time I'll hit Panini Cafe...
I wish I could give these guys more stars because their staff is terrific, they all hustle, their food is great and I love there buy one get one free breakfast pastries after 11. I work in the same building and they use to give all of us 10% off without building pass, which made me want to eat here every day because it was great food at a good value. Once they took this deal away, I saw many rounds of price increases.
I love their Chicken Pesto and DC Chicken Sandwiches, chocolate muffins, tangy house dressing and the lot, but it is so difficult to spend over $7 for a sandwich. Ad a drink, side or tax and it is $10! Yikes.
Kind of an upscale Quiznos, good food, leaning toward gourmet sandwiches. Can be hard to get a seat at noon.
Coffee and pastries are acceptable.
Breakfast panini sandwiches are good.
Priced high for what you get (but this is downtown)
Good food but not healthy at all. They manage to put mayo or cheese on everything even the salads. Its a little expensive too, but I love it. The food, regardless of healthiness, is always quality.
The only thing I really dont like is that during lunch they are always out of eating utensils and lids for your drinks and stuff. Thats frustrating because it takes awhile to get someone to bring you a fork or a knife from the back.
I go here at least once a week since its in the building I work in. My breakfast faves are the oatmeal and the croissants. The bagels are good too but if you want it toasted with cream cheese, they toast the bagel and wrap it in foil, then give you a teenie container or cream cheese to spread on yourself.
Lunch, I usually get the tuna on olive bread which I LOVE and their chips are really good too. Their paninis make me sick every time.
Their cinnamon cake is really really good.
Again, I frequent this place because its convenient. Not because the food is outstanding. It also helps that you can call in your lunch order and skip the line.
ETA: I'm taking off a star because they got rid of their Olive bread. wtf.
kinda surprised at the low rating here, considering how crowded this place gets with the Downtown weekday lunch crowd. It's not the Water Grill, but for inexpensive, tasty and fast (without being 'fast food'), I probably eat here more than anywhere else for lunch. It beats the Subway and Quizno's a block away.
I like the Turkey Frisco with Artichokes and Bavarian with the Pretzel Bread. For a while, they always said they were out of the bread for the sandwich I wanted and had me substitute. I actually sent an email through their website about this, and a few days later I got in the mail some gift certificates and letter apologizing saying they'll work on correcting this. And, it's happened only a couple of times since.
Mediocre is kind. This is one of the worst lunch bets downtown. Everything I've had at 7th & Fig is preferable. Nazo's pastries are better than the pastries here.
And long lines. WTF?
Certain food at this place is good. Just don't go around lunch time during the week. I actually don't know if they are open on weekends, since it's pretty much DT workers who crowd the place up. And boy does it crowd up! Someone yell Line out the Door!!.
The few things I've tried: cold pannini with tomato basil, and Mozzarella. If they could only melt the cheese. The salads are ok. not a lot to chose from, and the combination option they offer is weak. The only thing I do like but wish was bigger is the ravioli in marinara sauce. That always leaves me asking for more, but at 7 bucks for 9 itsy bitsy pieces, I think twice before even going to the place. Their pastries look good, had a few bite size ones, but it's pretty expensive or I would not hesitate to walk out with a dozen.
*big NO NO*
We decided to come here for lunch. I walked in and ordered my food. We sat down and saw flies everywhere. *gross* My food arrived, and it did not look appealing to me at all. I would rather to get a burritos at la sasa then here. If you want to get a sandwich. I will recommend subway or Quiznos. I am never coming here again.
*period*
Lunch catered from this location today- I cannot speak for the ambiance of the cafe, but the sandwhich creations did the trick and then some.
I sampled half of an Uptown Turkey (hickory smoked turkey breast, applewood smoked bacon, sliced avocado, leaf lettuce, and tomatoes on a very grainy, if not somewhat dry, harvest bread), half of a Chicken Pesto (grilled white meat chicken, fresh arugula and plum tomato slices on a soft ciabatta ficelle roll, very with pesto-y), and general helpings of mixed green salad (the croutons are spicy! and yummy! and I don't generally like croutons!).
Presentation was good, recommended for casual lunch meetings where an assortment of gourmet sandwhiches is called for. I am told there are tasty hot grilled paninis to try next time...
Not bad, but not a good idea to come here for lunch on a weekday, with a party of 6. It's right in the middle of a whole bunch of corporate offices, so it was really crowded. It was sheer luck that we found seating. The service was quick and friendly. I am a soup/salad/sandwich type of person, so I generally like these types of cafes. Their chips are pretty good. I also really like paninis, but be careful, sometimes they can come out a bit too greasy.
I'm surprised by the low rating for Corner Bakery, especially those complaining about high prices. For the quality of food, I actually think that most of their menu items are a good value. Corner Bakery is one of the few happy mediums between fast food and expensive sit-down lunches in Downtown. I recently had their delicious harvest salad for $7, and it was so big, I had it for two meals! Their baked goods are always fresh and yummy, too. I feel that this is one of the best Downtown lunch options for those who don't want fast food but also don't have corporate expense accounts.
Good food, big portions, prices are average. The lunch crowd is ridiculously large.
love the salads and panini chicken sandwiche. It's alway crowded during lunch hours and if you are in a hurry this is a place to avoid cause service can be a bit slow during lunch hours, But overall, good food.
The absolute worst!!!!! $10 bucks for a sandwich date arrives later than it should, is falling apart and gives you a stomach ache. I have seriously gotten sick from eating at this location. It doesn't seem that hard to serve decent, safe sandwiches, but this place doesn't even try. Why is it always so crowded? I can't figure it out other than lack of choices in the area.
Muffins are incredible. Coffee's ok.
Foods ok. I like their chicken sandwich. But I like their location in Pasadena better (I would've given that one 4 stars). It has a nice outdoor patio for you to enjoy your lunch. The inside of the downtown location isn't much. Cramped, not enough tables. But I guess it is in downtown. Since there aren't that many other choices there, I would say this is a decent lunch venue. Though the people did get my friends order wrong. But he gave her a $5 discount coupon on her next order as compensation.
