I truly believe that to learn what wines you love, you need to taste many at a time and next to one another. Where else can you go and do just that without spending a fortune?
The answer is the Cork.
The folks here are very helpful, very friendly, attentive and don't assume anything about your wine knowledge or taste which is so nice. They have 6 or 8 "stations" each featuring 6-8 wines which you can sample (aka a taste) or for slightly more you can buy a glass. The taste and glass prices vary according to the bottle price and you purchase a sort of "credit card" with your own pre-specified dollar amount and it never expires. I go quite a bit so mine always has a little something on it. They rotate their selections every few weeks and if you have a friend who is more into beer, they have a varying microbrew and import selection that can be purchased by the bottle (no tap - sorry).
Bottom line, I love this place!

Can't go wrong with the selection of wines, even the inexpensive ones have all been great. Tiffany, the manager there, has done an excellent job of pleasing palettes.
The ambiance is better than any wine store I have seen yet. Realize that they started Cork as a wine store where you could taste the wines before buying them. But their customers quickly turned it into a socializing place and wine venue. Cork never intended to be a wine bar, but that is what it has become.
Their markup and the prices they charge are far lower than any wine bar or restaurant in town and are inline with any boutique wine shop where you would buy wine and take it home with you.
For this value, I can excuse the lack of seating and traipse around the store reading all the labels.
The kiosks have a unique social networking aspect to them that is interesting: you can read others' tasting notes.
I give them 5 stars for being "unique in the universe... and unique is valuable" -- john chriton
Oh, and yes, they have bites to eat now!
I live pretty close to Cork and I think it's a great concept. They consistently have tasting events each week, which brings the people in, and the people who work there are so freaking nice!!
Here's how you do it. You go in and hand the cashier some money. The money turns into a card that you can swipe at the kiosks where the wines on tap are featured. You can buy a tasting, a glass, or a bottle. Tastings are little, but for little price. Last weekend, I went with a couple of friends and tried four wines for just a couple bucks a piece. All the wines I tasted were really high quality, which was really nice (no cheapies!!). There is also a great little lounge in the back to hang out, and of course chairs out front.
If you don't finish your card, no worries! keep it in your wallet and come back later for a couple more swipes and sips. Easy peasy!

I love Cork, you choose your wine tasting on a touch screen computer, you buy a card with credits and just swipe it and you'll get your wine. But there's something other that is also great about this place, they sell you the gourmet/microbrew beer by six pack or a bottle of wine and you can sit outside and order a pizza or sushi from the two restaurants next door... grab a magazine from borders, grab a seat and have some wine.
I love cork. the only reason to drink in the west village. the staff are cool, not pretentious and give excellent advise. tons of awesome values.
here maybe the best part. if you are going with people that prefer good beer to good wine, cork has got great deals on imported and craft brewed bottled beer!

Cork is the gold standard of wine tasting opportunities. Greatest merit? Cork is the most innovative wine concept I've ever run across - Best Cellars and http://Wine.com be damned.
Other merits:
An oustandingly well-educated steward (Wendie Waters, Director of Marketing and Procurement). Personable, bookish, fount of information. Glad to know that she really knows the provenance of the bottles she's buying! And they are niiiiiiiice. Wines change weekly (bonus!), so there's great incentive to return frequently.
An excellent, high tech but easy to understand menu of cool wines to try (from all over the world). Go to your average wine bar and order from a laminated menu. Go to Cork and order from a touchscreen, where the bottles you're reading about on-screen are right there, sitting on top of the computer station. Tackle the first station in part or in full and wander the length of the store to other computer tasting stations. Genius!
Fantastic prices. Truly, if you want to try 15 wines, you can generally do so for just a couple bucks a sip, via a handy-dandy debit card.
If you enjoy the club-meets-wine-tasting scene, maybe Cork isn't for you. It truly is the place to educate a palate.
Downsides: there are TWO
(1) Seating is not terribly plush or ample: this is primarily a retail store with great tasting options. Prepare to sip and stand or have one of a few seats at the front or extreme rear of the store.
(2) No nibbles.

Modern & innovative concept in wine tasting! I love how you can sit at a booth with a touch screen monitor and read about wines before swiping your pre-paid card to get a taste or a glass. When you're done, Cork will email you all the wines you tasted so that you don't need to take notes! Also, all wines are available for purchase by the bottle or case.
