My husband and I really like this theater.  We are considering joining because they always seem to have such interesting films.  We have been very busy but the last movies we saw here were Milk and (500) Days of Summer.  I love that it is so old school and just a beautiful theater.  The prices for sweets and popcorn are also less pricey than others, a big I.E. Loews Theater at the Boston Common.

I truly believe that people who enjoy good films and a great experience come here.  It may be a bit "artsy-fartsy" but we all need a little culture!

Note: this is NOT for IMAX lovers or people who think "The Terminator" is a great movie. Ohhhhh kaaaay maybe my sweeping generalizations are off-putting. My apologizes. The truth is-I don't buy all the blood/sex/violence of mainstream movies, and you won't find any of that riffraff here.

See, the thing is that I love the Coolidge Corner Theater and I don't want haters to come in and muck it all up for independent theater lovers like moi. The Coolidge is a unique establishment, as you can view artistic cinematic pieces in an artistic environment. I mean, you haven't seen anything this beautiful since the vaudeville days!

My favorite parts of the CCT:
-BYOS(nacks). Yes, you can bring you own food in. I've scarfed down a burrito here, I've eaten their house popcorn (delicious, cheap-no $87 snacks here), I've eaten a pint of Ben + Jerry's (don't judge)

-The oversized living room theater that seats about 20. Very intimate. If you like your personal space, I do not advise.

-Adequate bathrooms. Don't bother with the one on the floor you saw the movie on-haul it down/up a level and get your peepee on!

-Cheap ticket prices. No mortgages needed.

Coming from the midwest where there was only one "indie" theater and it was 45 minutes away by car, Coolidge Corner Theater is a goldmine. I take it for granted, now.

I went to their Sing-a-Long/Quote-a-Long viewing of "Labyrinth" with a couple of friends. David Bowie as Goblin King. Check. David Bowie as Goblin King in extremely tight, awkward spandex pants. Check. Hilarious host for the evening in said awkward pants and Bowie glam-rock hair? Check!

When we got there, we were ushered over to a table where we were given bubbles, firework popper things, and some kind of noisemaker, I think. This was a gorgeous outing. The folks who planned the event had everything worked out to a T and everyone had a blast.

I would most certainly go to another sing-a-long showing at the theater. I need to check out the Midnites, for sure, as there have been nearly 40 of them that I've wanted to see since living in the area, and I'm looking into getting a membership.

Support your local theaters so they're not replaced by Loew's!

Best Indie Movie Theatre I've ever been to!

Amazing experience all the way down to the scrumptious popcorn.

I like the random midnight showings of older movies and like to keep up to date on their shows as I live down the street from them.

I would recommend this place to anyone. :)

The people here are nice, and it's a great atmosphere, but sometimes it just isn't worth the price of the movies.

On the other hand, it definitely beats AMC sometimes, when you want that kind of "feel".

There are a bunch of stores around Coolidge Corner, so it's easy to buy snacks beforehand too.

Three words for you: Princess Bride Quote-a-thon. And four more: Christopher Guest Midnight Movie. And three more again: Moulin Rouge Sing-a-long. (OK, I didn't actually get to go to the third one because I was out of town, but for the past 2 years I've been hoping and praying to the gods that it would happen again, because it may just make my life complete).

Aside from the killer special events, this theater is just fricken awesome, the epitome of cool, the standard to which one should hold all other megaplexes and duplexes and whatever-else-plexes to. I love going here with friends or by myself, for a regular movie or for a special event, during the day or at night... so yeah, basically any time. I wish they had more screens because I would love to see *all* my movies here... instead I am sometimes relegated to the "regular" theater in Fenway to get my fill of whatever stupid chick-flick or blockbuster I'm being dragged to. Ah well, you can't always get what you want...

I've been here for at least half a dozen movies. The screening rooms are decorated like old school theatres, which gives it that classic feel. Another reason I like Coolidge Corner Theatre, is because even if you get stuck in the the first couple rows, you won't get that awful neck cramp like at most theatres. There's also a small viewing movies for the flicks that don't draw larger crowds. It's pretty cozy and has comfy seats.

They also have oldies but goodies at Coolidge. I saw Jaws there this past fall, it was amazing to finally see it on a screen. There's something special that happens when you watch a movie that everyone's seen. There's an anticipation, an electricity of sorts. Rather than fear, it's just sort of giddiness to see this "beast" on screen. They also host things like Rocky Horror Picture Show and a slew of foreign and indie films.

Coolidge Corner is one of the few movie theatres that I feel like it's actually worth spending the money to see a movie.

Midnight movies on Saturdays are lots of fun, people definitely go all out dressing up in themed outfits. Regular movies are great too, they play some really interesting stuff. The theater itself has a sweet old-school feel. You won't get digital 3-D or ultra comfortable seats, but its feels super authentic and its just so much fun going there. I lost my gloves here once and the staff were helpful and friendly when i called about it later (didn't find them though..). Also a great location, lots of places to eat around. And apparently its a non-profit movie theatre? Who knew such things existed...

Nice ambiance, it feels very old-school cinema.  The seats are comfortable, the location is very convenient, interesting selection of indie films, and the regular tickets are very decently priced.

It's a very small theater though, with only 4 screens, which limits the range of offerings.

My only other (slight) criticism is the matinee price, which is $7.75 for the FIRST showtime before 4pm for each film (though tix are listed as $7 if you try to buy online), compared to the big theaters that have multiple discounted showings ranging from $6 before noon to $8 in the early afternoon, or Kendall which has tix for $7.50 for all shows before 6pm.

Overall, very cool place, recommend!

Note: Here, you'll find more Indie style films than your regular block-buster.

This is one of those places that I find myself telling people in other cities about all the time. Somehow, Coolidge Corner Theatre became the standard by which I compare all other cinemas. Pretty darn impressive, I must say!  I love the elegance of this place -- heavy red drapes, ornate carvings. I also love that it's a non-profit so I don't feel like I'm funding Hollywood terrorism or completely wasting my hard-earned cash even when I'm lame enough to go to repeat movies here alone. Hey, it's for a good cause! ;-)

Although I'm not the best at estimating size for theatres, I'd say the biggest screen in the whole place only has seating for 200 or so. I once saw "Man on Wire" in the tiny screen that only held about 20 people. I didn't know places like this exist! Thursdays are discounted for students, fyi. They always have special events going on here with random showings of things like Wizard of Oz or amateur porn night. Seats are big & comfy and snacks are cheap.

Love, love, LOVE this place!

Definitely the best indie theater in Boston!  Not only do that have a kick ass film selection on a regular basis but they also throw awesome parties with ANDREW W.K.!!!!!!!  I saw Andrew W.K. and the Calder Quartet at the Coolidge Theater last night and I can honestly say it was the funnest night I've had all year and the hardest I've ever partied on a Wednesday night!  Great music, great sound quality and a great crowd.  I think the Coolidge Theater should have more awesome concerts/parties and invite Andrew W.K. back!

Who could possibly write a bad review about the Coolidge?? It's brilliant... it's one of my favourite things about Boston. Membership is well worth it... free movies on Tuesdays, free popcorn and discounts at other times.
The Science on the Screen series has been really excellent...
Has generally great films... although I wish they'd stop showing Food Inc, it's been on for weeks!

I love this place. It's nice and cozy and I love the midnight showings of old school movies and the drunken kids who shout at the screen and the audience applauding as they get taken out while beer bottle clink and crash together at their feet. Ah...I love this place.

Popcorn and sodas are cheaper than at other theaters and they play movies that other theaters don't. The people are nice and the theater's clean and there aren't a lot of high school students who don't have anything better to do with their life than stand around in front of the movie theater door blocking the way so us paying-folk can get in to see our blasted movie and then come back out to see what? Them. And this theater is close to home so I can walk home after and go to my home without feeling like everyone's following me because Brookline is just too classy and safe for all that mumbo jumbo. Ah...I love this place.

This is an all time great theater. It shows indie and art films as well as "good" new films of all genres. But my favorite thing they do here is the "Off the Couch" series. A film a month, usually the second Tuesday at 7:00 or 7:30 PM, followed by a discussion of the film moderated and augmented by a member of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society. We have found these discussions to be illuminating, sometimes moving, always interesting. And the movies they choose are great.
http://www.coolidge.or...

Another interesting series done here is the Science on Screen Program which has a scientist of some kind leading a discussion after the film. Recent example is the film "Night of the Living Dead" followed by a  discussion of the  theoretical neuroscience of zombies and the psychological effects they have on others by a psychiatrist who admits to a fascination with zombie films:
http://www.coolidge.or...

Brookline/Boston have some amazing people around, and The Coolidge
taps these resources and sheds light on your favorite films and some you wouldn't have discovered if not for their programs. Check it out.

The best movie experience I've ever had. What it lacks in punch it makes up in style. Do not hesitate and make the trek to Coolidge Corner in Brookline to check this place out. There's also a lot of good restaurants close by. It's very accessible by bus or T too. I've gone to about four movies there in the past year or so. Will be seeing Inglourious Basterds there very soon. Can't wait. I agree with Karen S - stock up on snacks at CVS next door.

This theater is amazing!!! I love the old theater feel, but mostly I love their summer series Big Screen Classics.  When I went for the Princess Bride there were free snacks provided from Trader Joes and a raffle! It doesn't get better than that. The atmosphere is great and they draw in a great crowd of people. It was like being at home in your living room, only with hundreds of people in it!  I think it's great that they host so many awesome events and offer great programs for everyones enjoyment. The memberships seem like a great idea, and the prices are much better than those at the bigger theaters in the city.

This should really be a 4.5 because I have a couple small probs with The Coolidge, but those are easily overshadowed by how kick-ass this place is. It's the center of the Coolidge Corner neighborhood, and a gathering point for all members of the community. Who doesn't love seeing movies at a classically-restored theater that radiates art deco charm?

The marquee and neon lights are exactly what you want to see strolling down Harvard Street on a nice night. And beyond it's obvious aesthetic prowess, The Coolidge offers up independent first-run features and old school favorites alike, in a way few Boston theaters can relate to.

Kendall Square Cinema is a fair comparison to this theater, and though it's far less accessible than Coolidge, Kendall has twice as many screens and I feel they make better choices on what films to show. This brings me to my only issue with The Coolidge theater, the scheduling.

Here's an example. Earlier this summer, they got the film "Adventureland." Now this was a well-reviewed, fun movie, but it was also a major studio release. Every big theater had it out, so what's the point of getting it at Coolidge? When I participated in a focus group for the theater, having been a member for a year (worth it), I mentioned that no wide releases should appear there outside of oscar season. It's unfair to the movies that won't get a chance at all.

Then the theater kept 'Adventureland" for 6 weeks, while other smaller movies came and went in a week or two. What the heck? If you're gonna be a Not-for-profit theater, how can you bring in an obvious money-maker like that and keep it around so long? Lame.

Anyways, please don't let my little rant dissuade you from visiting this Boston landmark. It's an excellent date spot ("Oh, I've never been to that place.") and each of the four screens offers a unique experience.

The Main theater is large with big curtains and an overhanging balcony. The Second theater is more leveled with different tiers and is half as big. The Mini-Max hold less than 50 and is a fun, intimate way to watch a movie. However, it features a digital projector which does not look the same as film. Finally there's the Screening Room, which only has a dozen seats or so. This place is a lot of fun cause you feel like a big wig being shown some exclusive picture.

Try each one at some point. And on weekends, the local Brookline couples, young and old, come in droves so pick up tickets before dinner. They don't have an online ticketing kiosk, so if you order ahead, you still have to wait in line at the box office. Trust me, I've mentioned that this should change. See ya at the movies!

Great place! Huge theater, lots of seating (very uncomfortable) cheap tickets, awesome films and lots of indie films!

This a great place to see some great movies you won't find anywhere else. I went here twice this week alone!  I saw J. Canninbals Feast of Flesh!  That was just crazy all around dancing girls and zombies..pfft..what else do  you need?  I saw the original night of the living dead last night and a little theory on why zombies do what they do..perfect!
The perfect place for seeing your not so ordinary kind of stuff you're not going to find anywhere else.  The popcorn is like eating saw dust..but ah, who cares bring some smaaaaaahtfood and call it a day.  When there is something like "Feast Of Flesh" I definitely would go at least an hour early or you will be way in the back of theater.  The lines here go way around the back of the theater for the fun showings. Also, there's tons of parking in the back and you don't have to pay for the meters after 6:00. Yes...for once..a free ride!

Coolidge Corner Theatre:

Comfy Seats?  Yay!
Clean Bathrooms?  NAY!
Nice employees?  YAY!
Clean theatre?  YAY!
Old-style theatre?  YAY!
Good popcorn? Decent.

I think the CCT is a good place to go on a rainy day.  Or, maybe a sunny day with a light breeze, but not too sunny, I mean who wants to go the movies on nice weather days?  Well, maybe movie buffs.  And people who really like to sit in dark theatres and eat popcorn, candy, etc.
Would you go on a snowy day, you ask?  I know you were thinking that...why not?  Well, there is not much free parking in the area, so you might be SOL...but there is a parking lot around the corner near the citizen's bank.  My bus line, the invisible 66 runs past this place too.  I have no idea how and why it actually arrived to drive me home a mere minutes after I left the theatre. STRANGE!

Speaking of strange, the strange thing about this place is that you buy your tickets outside?!  How. vintage.

Coolidge corner theater..you just had a midnight showing of "The Room" and I now love you. "Leeeeesaaa your tearing me apppart leeessaa". Ha! so great.
Anyways love the atmosphere of this theater. It's old but well taken care of. It's non profit and the people who run it seem to generally care about it. The theater rooms range in size. Some are tucked away in corners of theater and only have about 20 seats. It's amazing. I also have to say I once saw live boobies while attending a show here. So you get a star and a half for that.
Lastly just a few weeks ago one of the workers gave me free popcorn just cause he thought my outfit was rad. And no he was not hitting on me. Shiiiet I'm so gay when you look at me just right you are blinded by reflections of rainbows.
Thanks for the popcorn dude. I was hungry and I am poor.
Lastly the theater is right on the C line and there is parking in the back.

One of the best theaters in the Boston. Like Harvard and Kendall Square it shows mostly smaller box office films. They do a lot of documentaries.

They have great membership packages with member events and screenings. The atmosphere is awesome too. Very classic looking with 4 theaters of different sizes.

I can't think of a downside to this theater. My favorite theater in the Boston area, hands down.

Coolidge Corner Theatre stands apart from the sea of homogeneous theatres in the area.

First, the movies (or films, excuse me) are generally independent. Acts of varying types occasionally take to the stage if live theatre is more your scene. An excellent byproduct of this wide-range of entertainment? Not exactly a kid haven. Yay to no ill-mannered children ruining your experience!

Second, the people are very friendly. Like, they smile at you and speak instead of communicating in a series of grunts, sighs and hand gestures. Very nice.

Third, the physical space is great. You can park on the street or behind the building. The T is a mere minutes away. Inside, it maintains a clean, classic theater vibe. The bathrooms are neat and sanitary. The seats are comfortable and I didn't get TRLS (theater restless leg syndrome- yes, I may have made that up).

Lastly, you can rent this place out without breaking the bank. My coworker did just that and proposed to his girlfriend here. How cool.

Great independent theater in coolidge corner that fits the neighborhood so perfectly. The main theater is like a 1920s grand cinema screen with balcony seating and  huge curtains. Ticket prices are on the cheaper side ($7.75 for matinee and $9.75 for regular price?). The theater also has maybe events where an author from the nearby brookline booksmith will speak with fans and have book signings. I met Bruce Campbell there and went to his book signing back in 2005. Last weekend when I went to see Food Inc., we went to a really small theater upstairs, but that was to be expected since a documentary doesn't fill up massive screens. Defintely a go to place if you want to avoid the college crowd or packed Friday and Saturday night showings.

Just saw Slumdog Millionaire here tonight. Great movie shown at a great little theater.

We got there a little late so availability of seats for 4 was not good; but having to sit on the far right 2nd row from the screen did not give me a headache. The sound was of quality, the seats were comfortable, and the picture is pretty sharp.

This was my first visit and I'll be sure to come again. (I'm even thinking about getting a membership-saves you $3 for admission!)

And when your movie is done be sure to look up.

This theater was remodeled a few years back I believe. The movie selection is lovely if you like independent or hard to find films. If you're into movies, you should definitely check it out if you're in Boston. It's very unique, the structure. It stands alone among the corporate movie theaters out there that all look the same. Plus, it's in a great part of town (COOLIDGE CORNER!).

All shows before 4pm are matinee prices, only $7.75! Which seems silly to be happy about, but ticket prices in LA are so expensive usually, that this seems like a bargain. Sad, but true...

Was there ever a time when tickets for movies were under $5.00? Sigh.

BUT YES, YOU MUST COME HERE IF YOU LOVE MOVIES AND ARE IN BEANTOWN. You'll like it. I know you will. It's got old-fashioned tattered charm.

Heaven.

I've never had a bad experience here.  Great selection of films, projection and sound have never been a problem, and the design both inside and out is really beautiful.  In an age when most theaters feel like airports, it's nice to see a film in a place that is actually aesthetically pleasing.  Every time I've gone for a midnight screening, the crowd has been really fun.  One time I saw 'Friday the 13th Part 3' here and I swear, everybody in the crowd was drunk.  Great times.

My only complaint, the midnight movies seemed to have slowed to a trickle.  It's a major drag!

I live so close to this theater and just recently have started to take advantage of its awesomeness.  It generally plays indies and obscure movies, as well as hosting some popular author talks from Brookline Booksmith.

The prices are about $9.75 with discounts for students on thursdays and member discounts.  It's well maintained and I love the old-school promos (Let's all go to the lobby to get ourselves a snack) that play prior to the previews.

The only drawback is that you can usually hear the bass from neighboring screens so it can detract from the movie you are watching.  And people are quite noisy here which I find annoying.

I love the Coolidge!  The midnight programming is fantastic!  I do wish that their regular programming were a bit more adventurous.  They often fill the larger screens with "indie" films that are playing at the other art house cinemas in the area.  The series programming makes up for it- with gems such as "off the couch" and the 3D film festival.  The snacks are brilliant, inspired even- with high end chocolate, coffee and ice cream.
I recommend getting a Coolidge membership- particularly if you are a student.

Here is the deal on student memberships (from the Coolidge website)
STUDENT MEMBERSHIP only $35!
   * $3.00 off regular price admission
   * 2 Free small popcorns
   * 2 for 1 admission to most Midnite films

The proceeds from our membership program go right back into special programs and projects at the Coolidge. A portion of your membership fee is tax-deductible - so you can both feel good and do good by joining.

I have never seen a bad movie at the Coolidge.  Part of the credit goes to my mega film buff movie buddy who has an RSS feed from Rotten Tomatoes streaming directly to his brain, but a lot of it also goes to the Coolidge for their great selections.

They also host a range of special events.  Two of my favorites are the Buffy Sing-Along ("Once More, With Feeling" on the big screen = love), and the Boston Babydolls ladies only burlesque show.  (I have to admit bias on that last one, since I know some of the Babydolls, but it's still a great event - it always sells out.)

Add in the deco style theatres, intimate screening rooms, and non-crappy concession counter, and you get the best movie venue in Boston.

The coolidge is a fun place to see a movie.  I've seen a few there back in my boston days..._Thank you for smoking_ and _Sicko_ are the only two I  remember...It's a little pricey, and they don't give student discounts, but it's worth the extra dollar.  It's nice to have an "indie" theater like this to go to, and the Coolidge corner area is a lot of fun as well.

An excellent independent movie theater. There are always great films showing, for a decent price, considering that I'm spending up to 12 bucks to see a crappy movie at a Lowe's on a Saturday night. I recently went to the 3d movie festival back in May, and it was an awesome experience. I rode bikes with my friends to see the 9:30 showing of the original House of Wax, complete with stylish 3-D glasses. And not the cheesy blue and red kind you find in cereal boxes; official Coolidge Corner Theatre 3-D specs that made Vincent Price in all of his bearded glory seem like he was standing directly in front of me.

Anyway, go here and enjoy the thrills of old classics, but also new quality films. (I recently saw There Will Be Blood and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, two quality films that ended up winning a bunch of awards. But I'm sure you knew that already)

TIPS:
- Listen to WZBC 90.3fm, Boston College's radio station. I work there and we give out pairs of tickets to every film at 8:30am, 11:30am, 2:30pm, and 4:30pm.

- After getting free tickets, buy a ton of popcorn, candy, and soda. Not only will the free tickets leave you with plenty to spend, but independent theaters like Coolidge don't make much money at all on the ticket sales. Most of their revenue comes from concessions. Do your part in keeping great establishments like this open.

A friend turned me on to Coolidge Corner Theater to go see Lawerence of Arabia.

An awesome idea I never would have thought of myself! I like the foreign film lineup, as well as features from the various film festivals. I've been a little disapointed with the standard box office stuff these days, and I believe Coolidge Corner Theater is just the cure I have been lookin for in my entertainment/educational/cultural needs!

I plan on going back on July 11 to see The Wackness.

If there's one thing I regret not doing in this fine city, it's living within walking distance of the CCT. I visited recently after a five year hiatus and found its old art house style to be just as charming, and its colorful paint job to be just as vibrant.

Phenomenal films and acts have graced the stages and screens here, from sing-a-longs, Babydolls Burlesque live, midnight shows, science on screen, world cinema and other awesome, creative programs. The entertainment runs the gamut.

As the establishment is a non-profit, a portion of their membership is tax deductible and totally reasonable, student and seniors are specially priced!

So when you feel like doing something low-key but with indie spunk and history, help fund this great institution of fun.

Recently, I had  a conversation with friends about the decline of movie theaters in the face of DVR, HD, and BluRay home entertainment. One friend said that the movie-going experience is annoying. That the people who work there and the typical customers are rude and ruin the experience. I was totally stunned. Didn't everybody get a thrill from getting their ticket ripped? From choosing the seat? From enjoying the anticipatory thrill of trailers? From the hush and comforting darkness of the theater? From the public, communal experience of taking in a movie? Apparently, no.

But then I realized that not everyone goes almost exclusively to movies at the Coolidge Corner Theater. This is movies for adults. I love this theater and how it keeps the movie-going experience alive.

Look for special series (like movies with Johnny Cupcakes).

If the parking lot is full, try the meters across the street and around the block which are free after 6 PM.

The Coolidge is awesome for many reasons...it gets great movies that no other local theatre (except Kendall, which is just SO FAR AWAY!) gets, the popcorn and sodas are super-cheap, and the theatres are lovely.

Minus one star because I see a mouse nearly every single time I attend.

Probably the main reason I still live in Brookline.....

Just a fantastic place. Incredible movie selection always - the best part is - they don't take themselves too seriously. They treat a B movie like "Prom Night" with the same reverence as a Bergman film. Very cool - can't say enough about the curating. Someone there has great taste.

But the main reason I'm even reviewing the Coolidge is to encourage you to become a member! Talk about a great deal - for $150 you become a "Director" level member - this entitles you to free admission Monday-Thursday and - get this- free popcorn! And the popcorn at the Coolidge rules. Plus you are donating to a non-profit theater. Seriously folks, just do it. Let's keep this place open for another 100 years.

I grew up in a typical mid-size suburban residential neighborhood.  You had to drive everywhere, and nothing looked "classic".  When I found Coolidge Corner, it was like all of my dreams coming true...

...and then I saw the Coolidge Corner Theater.  Some kids dream about flying cars, or teleporting...not me. I always wanted a time machine back to the days of big skirts and sweaters and the Coolidge Corner Theater.  Jackpot. It's not flashy, it doesn't have space ice cream, but you know, it's a great little getaway, and in my opinion, a really cute date place.  Plus - with the Upper Crust , the Creperie, and JP Licks right around the corner, you really can't go wrong for pre/post flick snacks. One stop shopping!  Every now and then they also have a midnight cult classics, so it's a good weekend alternative for those times when you really can't face another Sunday morning migrane ;)

The Coolidge Corner theater is a great spot.  Not only for its awesome Art Deco architecture outside AND inside, but the theater itself has no shortage of excellent first run art and indie films.  It's one of the only theaters that still does great midnite movies that arent populated by drunk college kids.  The lobby is gorgeous and the folks that man the counters are all very friendly and enjoy the theater as much as the customers do.  Great popcorn that won't cost you 8 dollars a serving, cool candy selection and a great old-fashioned lobby.

The films they show here are what you'd expect any art-house to show.  Lots of movies to make republicans feel bad, sure, but so much more - they show great midnight zombie-fests, awesome throwbacks with fun themes (Raiders of the Lost Ark hosted by an actual archaeologist!  Big Lebowski Bowling Night!) and really cool rare flicks (the only theater around that showed Tarsems 'The Fall' that I know of.)

Since we just moved back here, we're going to join as members, but the ticket prices are totally acceptable and it all goes to a good cause....putting Michael Bay in the cold, cold ground.
