Amazing selection. For a cook, this place could be THE place in the city. You may find that perfect cast-iron Belgian waffle maker or crock from a company that is long out of business. It's incredible and very special. The place is so crammed full of stuff that it's actually hard to move around which further adds to the feeling that the hidden gem you're craving is nearby, so look harder you must. The stuff ain't cheap, but good luck finding it anywhere else.

However, it only gets four stars because the owner is not often pleasant. That's the nicest way I can say it. I'm warming up to her though...

Its sort of like the "OSH" hardware commercials, if they don't have it, you don't need it.

I was really overwhelmed. I was there for 30 minutes, left, came back and was there an hour. Unfortunately I did not go here looking for something specific. I had an idea about maybe a cast iron dutch oven. But its not like they have one, that have 50. Ever shape, every condition. Too many choices for this thrifty mouse. I think I need to make a list of "items I need" then go back.

They have everything from hand crank meat grinders, fine china, some of the most beautiful copper pans I've ever seen, antique chocolate molds, whisks of every type, and so many gadgets........

Very nice people, friendly dog, things stacked in a organized chaos, little bit of a fire hazard, great shop!

I can't wait to go back with list in hand!

I know this place for years. Went there today to get something I could not find here - dog bone cooky cutter - she found me a set of 7 for the dog and it was $8 and I bought something else I needed for baking and blending in cold butter with flour for $5. And we talked. I am making dog biscuits and just experimenting - she gave some of my biscuit to her dog. I really like that cooky cutter set and  I dont have to pay for shipping (Amzn wanted $8 to ship cooky cutter set at $8!

Well, I'm pretty sure they have everything in here - just good like finding it! I loved spending time poking around and I did find the deviled eggs platters I've been searching for EVERYWHERE! Problem is, while I'm not a big antique-y person I'm pretty sure this place is overpriced. I'm convinced you can find great deals here but you will have to search!

I usually love stores like Cookin' that offer a hodge podge of vintage and new kitchen items. I love the wonderland of things from old school percolators and Pyrex to brand new Le Creuset pots and pans. I can usually spend a good part of an hour pouring over unidentifiable items and reminiscing about that nut chopper that's a carbon copy of the one my mom used to have.

However, something is off at Cookin'. The store is merchandised (if you can even call it that) by a packrat and I couldn't get to about half of the items because of the precarious way they were placed on top of one another. I felt like a bull in a china shop every time I turned around and knocked something over. To top it off, the items that I did manage to get to and pick up were grossly overpriced. The best example of the price gouging was a case of kitchen knives that were haphazardly thrown in together and from what I could tell, were dull, but priced as if they were at Williams-Sonoma.

It's one thing to package and sell vintage items at inflated prices when they are in an aesthetically pleasing boutique type of place, but Cookin's overpriced items are thrown together in a garage-like atmosphere. I'm not saying that I'm personally more apt to purchase just because something is in a pretty package, but some people are and that's where Cookin' has missed the boat.

After about 20 minutes in the store I felt a case of claustrophobia coming on and had to get out immediately. Once on the street, I breathed a sigh of relief to be out of that mess.

I'm disappointed because Cookin' has real potential and the owner clearly has a great collection of items. She just needs a bigger space and/or a better way of merchandising and pricing.

I'm a kid in a candy store at this place...I had a bit of time, so I had to look for what I needed and leave.  OMG.  I could spend hours and hours in here looking at kitchenware/gadgets!

Service...Helpful, yes.  Friendly, nooooo.  And you know what...so long as you freakin' know the products, that is all that matters in this place, I guess. :)

Items = some old, some new.

Prices = cheap to moderate.  It depends on what you are looking for.

Organization = piles.  Everything is in stacks/piles...on shelves, on the floor, on tables, in bins, etc.

Cookin' is a good place to find used kitchen gadgets, bakeware, saucepans, and specialty kitchen and tableware items. But, as everyone has noted, it's a danger zone of stacks and piles of breakables. Don't bring in kids, dogs, or clumsy husbands--go in alone, and leave big bags in the car.
One thing I love here are the cookbooks. At the back of the shop, a wall of cookbooks (used and at reasonable discount) offer lots of options for gifts and pantry.
Also--this is a good place for things like candy thermometers or bundt or brioche pans or decorative cake stands. It's a bad place for a mandolin, knives, or anything else that benefits from sharpness or newness.
And, yes, the two people I have encountered: an old lady and a middle-aged man, were both of the unfriendly variety. However, when I wanted something specific, they assisted. Be prepared to hector them a bit.

For those of us who love digging through heaps of stuff to find that One we are looking for... this place has tons of used/vintage whatever cookware..  Also a really nice used cookbook section (Child, Madison, Pepin, Bitten - all there)..

sure the prices are a bit higher than what you might find at the flea market, but I don't hold it against them..

My advise is to "Beware of Dog"...the owner that is. Keep away from this "Culinary Crypt" and the "Condescending Cadaver" that haunts it.

This place sucks so bad that it swallows. Everything from the overpriced, overstocked, overwhelmed inventory to the overtly rude Snatchasaurus behind the counter (True Bitch). I avoid this lair with every cell in my being...it's a food-poseurs, paradise lost.
I often spy the fiend that inhabits this burrow, scavenging the various yard-sales and flea-market's (Alemany) scattered throughout The City, prior to her work day.
Immediately upon siezing her well won wares. She then loads her many finds, onto the hackles growing out of the hump on her back, all the while licking spittle off of her lip-less maw. What a fright.

On return to her spider hole, the items are then marked up to an almost hilariously, evil amount and then pandered to suckers like us, who are in desperate need to have that "one and only" item that will set us apart from our peers.
Please, just buy the shit at Williams Sonoma or better yet, go to France and purchase it there. I guarantee you, in both cases it will cost you a hell of a lot less. On so many levels.

I make no apologies for this rather harsh review and God knows that I've given this place a few good tries. Alas, to no avail. I respect myself and the money I earn and spend, way to much to be treated like a complete asshole.

Please do not respond to this particular review in defense of Cookin'. Like I said, I make no apologies. This is how I feel due to what I've experienced.

Every time I go to this place I am offended by 2 things. First, me having been a mgr of both Williams Sonoma and Sur La Table, I can tell you that the prices are RIDICULOUS. Its like the owner doesnt even research what NEW versions of her inventory cost. Why would I want to pay double for an old pot when I can buy a brand new one for half the price? Maybe she thinks her customers are stupid. Second, the owner of this store is kind of rude, and I dont mean she just had a bad day and she said something  curt. I mean she is RUDE. Go to Williams Sonoma and get the same thing for a fraction of the cost and they will probably be nice to you. I want to like this place because its in my hood and I try to shop local, but I just cant do it

This shop has personality but is a bit looney tunes (cluttered) but who cares, they have great stuff and the owner knows all there is to know about cookin. It's so fun to shop there - if you're a foodie and an explorer. We love everything we've purchased there, le creuset dutch ovens, carving knives, vintage cookbooks, and more.

There are really a lot of negatives about Cookin, but I refuse to focus on them. They include: a certifiably insane lady who apparently runs the place, the equally insane layout (which forces you to ask the crazy lady for help no matter what it is you're looking for, and guarantees that you are going to get chewed out for something random like not know the exact radius and circumference of the cup you're looking for) and the ridiculous prices. Honestly, though, none of that matters if you have even a tiny bit of packrat, vintage enthusiast or gourmand in your soul. There is so much cool shit here, you will loose your mind and want to buy about twenty cake stands or something crazy like that. Go! Buy a butter dish with a rose on it! You know you want to!

I've been waiting to get into this store for a while as it always seemed to be *just* closed every time I was in the area.

What a let-down! The older woman was arctic - I asked her a question and she was looking at me like "what the f*** do you want?" and then snapped a response and walked off.

WHATever, dude!

But wait, there's more! H was buying a little chotzky for me and was short a penny - he asked the other warm, kind-hearted, patient shop-keeper who was manning the register "can you spot me a penny?" she shook her head and said "no....no, I can't do that..." to which he was tempted to leave aforementioned chotzky and tell her to do something unmentionable with it, but, because it was a giftlet for me, he wanted to get it...

Luckily for her, I found a penny floating around in my purse.

Wow...WOW.

A PENNY....!

Evil, snarky dude behind the counter.  165 dolla for an etched brass plaque proclaiming "renseignements."  I'm sorry, ...no.  The place is so packed with crap, you can't even pick up one thing w/o knocking down another.
I couldn't even bring myself to buy the two-dollar item I was pondering b/c that meant I'd be supporting a rude, overpriced, B.S. store.  seriously, the things in there cost as much new, so why would I get the rusty version for that same price?
All very unfortunate, really.  I had such high hopes for this place.  I even deterred a windowgazing chick outside from progressing in.

One word: overpriced.
I can understand high prices for vintage items, but even their quite modern slow-cooker costs more than the same from Amazon. And some of their oven-safe soup bowls - I've seen the same in Williams Sonoma, where you'd pay nearly the same cost, but for new ones.
Second star is because of their cute dog - and because I still had that feeling of being in a treasure chest.

This is a great place to find any kind of cookware or dishware.  If you're on a budget and/or you love vintage dishware, then this is a great place to go.  They have wonderful skillets, brand name cookware, all kinds of baking molds and very pretty dishware (often times they have the whole set).  This is a great place, but be prepared to dig.

Cookin' is the kind of store you want to go to on a lazy weekend afternoon after your tummy is filled with brunch.

Thanks to other yelping folk I was recommended this store to find chocolate molds. I am so happy to have discovered this curiosity shop of cookware. Almost everything is professional quality and most from France. Take your time in the place and you will not be disappointed. The prices are a bit higher than I expected for pre-owned cookware and kitchen items, but I don't think you can get most of this stuff for much cheaper anywhere. Very vintage, very french, tre' chic!

My co-chef bought a cast iron pan for $60 and has never been happier with such a high quality item. This is definitely a regular haunting place now for both of us.

Best place to buy a gift for the Francophile on your list. Old metal signs and other French artifacts from charcuteries, bakeries, doctors offices, hotels, etc....they are not cheap but they are unique and characterful...recently purchased an old hotel door plaque that was a perfect gift "Fermez la porte doucement s'il vous plait".

Pretty cool! So, the store is a mish mash of other things, some new and overpriced, but a lot of old things or Chantal cookware in colors you can't find elsewhere.

Yep, the owner is eccentric, and she does go on, but she also has some good advice and knows a ton about cooking and baking, so listen up or just deal with it. If you can't handle a wee bit o'eccentricity, get thee on down to a Target.

I have been meaning to go in here for a long time. It is right by The Other Shop (love) on Divisadero.

I dont really cook (well) but I do like to bake and a danish friend of mine taught me how to make ebescuvier (sp?) and I needed the right pan to recreate. I could order one, but I am always wary of ordering on line. Im a hunter and gatherer. I prefer to touch the things I want to buy.

If thrifting old kitchen stuff is something you enjoy- then this place is cool. It is piled high and full. Be prepared to rummage, forage, and dig. Yes it has been "pre-sifted" so it will cost you more than a thrift shop. There is everything from pricey antique cake pedestals to quirky inexpensive fondue sets. But really- by the time you order it on Ebay and pay the shipping the cost will be about the same.

If you have any friends that are excellent cooks, this will be Thee place to get a unique hostess gift.

PS I was dressed super ratty and I got excellent service!

My mom has this cheese slicer---not one of the four-walled grater/slicer/shaver combo thingies---a hand held, tear drop shaped, metal and wood cheese slicer.
I LOVE this thing.  It makes slicing any block of cheese easy-peasy.

But the thing is, you can't find this apparatus ANYWHERE.  It's not made anymore, so you obviously won't find it at your local small appliance chain store.

I found one here. 'Nuff said.

Look I know I may not strike some of you as especially maternal, but when I'm not out rockin the SF scene I'm at home with a Pierre Deux apron on cooking shit.  Yeah, that's right, I'm cookin and probably boozing, but that's a side show....the drunk part is, I am usually making some motherhumping pork loin or a quiche...it satisfies me in a way that a man never will...OOOPS, did I say that?  Oh well, prove me wrong.

Anywho, sometimes when I'm sitting in my house with a hangover on Saturday and I'm wondering what to do, I will leap to my feet and jog over to Cookin.  While some are overwhelmed by the display, I am comforted by the presence of 517 ramakins in different shapes and sizes and can spend hours gazing longingly at the just perfectly used le crusete pots and pans.  Eventually, after negotiating my need for toilet paper and kitty litter, I will select some bizarre new toy, and hustle home to use my new chipped french serving platter.  Ahhh, the Joy of Cookin.

Wow. Not what I was expecting. I was expecting grandiose, beautifully arranged piles of affordable Le Creuset, copperware in one corner, All Clad in another, the occasional fondue pot and beautiful tea kettles.... Did I mention I was looking for le Creuset?

What I got was a disorganized mess of pre-used, antique and not affordable stuff. A pile of cast iron, non-enameled pans (people, you can get them for cheap new, and season it yourself!)

Le sigh. I'd rather get this gourmet kitchen stuff new then!!

This place is lamer than your prom date.

There is NO customer service. When I walked in here, until I approached the lady at the counter with a purchase, she never said a word to me. She just kept talking to someone ENDLESSLY!

Its like walking into a garage sale where all the good stuff has been taken. Most of it is rusty things I would be afraid to cook with since the bacteria might get kill me.

I did find a nice glass here which I washed thoroughly. If I wasn't blinded by love for it, I wouldn't have paid SIX DOLLARS for a used thing!!

Moral of this story? Never fall in love.

Four Stars because this place is fabulous...

Not Five though because it makes me incredibly nervous, if you are the least inclined to bump into things you should avoid this store.  Though if you are looking for unique/used kitchen ware and are not a klutz, have a ball.  Really though it is no fun being the bull in the china shop.

If you're looking for customer service, head to Sur la Table. If you're looking for selection, head to William Sonoma. But if you're willing to spend a little time (and maybe a little extra cash) carefully digging through piles of antique cookware, you will be greatly rewarded at Cookin'.

Every time I've visited it's been with a specific purpose, be it cookie trays for Madeleines or Pastis water pitchers, and Cookin' always has a selection of items to choose from. Arrive with patience and a credit card and enjoy.

Cookin' is quite a unique store. If you like old things, from around the turn of the century until the late eighties or so, then browsing through this store will be a great experience for you.

This store is stacking kitchen utensils of any kind you can imagine, you have to be careful walking around here since you might bump into something fragile and knock it over. And that could become expensive, and this is exactly the downside of this place...

While I had a great time here, and would have loved to buy quite a few things here, the prices are just ridiculous. Remember, this stuff is all used, and if you go to a few garage sales on the weekend, or better yet an estate sale, you will find very similar things for a quarter of the price, if not even cheaper. And while you can bargain with people at a garage sale, Cookin' won't even think about it, forget it.

I still think this place deserves three stars because it's quite unique, and if you are looking for something very particular (and don't want it from ebay, because you want to ~touch~ before you buy), chances are you will find it here. Just remember you will have to pay the price for it.

But I don't want to discourage anyone from checking it out. It's a unique store, it will make you feel like browsing through your grandma's kitchen stuff, or her attic's kitchen department...

Great place!  It's not just shopping, it's an adventure.  You'll come out of it congratulating yourself for your amazing find (even though it was the shopowner who actually found it first., and it's not like you got an amazing bargain.)  I love the stuff she has here, all in one place.  Do you need a copper turbotiere, a non-electric waffle iron, or a Moroccan tagine?  Of course you do. And it's probably here...somewhere...and the owner will probably know just where.  (Though she has let me down a couple of times, not having what I went in for.  But this is a very small percentage of the items I've asked for there.)

When you first walk in, the impression you'll get will be that the place is a disorganized rat's nest of junk.  But wait a few minutes to attune yourself, and you will begin to discern the order in the shop (all the custard cups are here, the salt shakers over here, the cookie forming things of various types over here....) and also to see the beauty and quality behind the dust of the things around you, many of which you can't find anywhere else.

If you CAN find them on eBay, at the Goodwill, or even at the flea market, the prices will almost certainly be lower elsewhere.  But that's to be expected--antique stores cost more than online listings and stalls.  If you're coming here expecting to get things really cheap because they're old, you'll be disappointed.  The owner and her customers see "old" as either a positive or a neutral thing, not a defect.  And the quality of the items here is mostly at least equivalent to what you'd find at a gourmet store, so it's not fair to compare them to Walmart items and then knock $ off that because they're used.  Her prices aren't cheap, but they're generally fair, considering that you won't have to hunt for years to find what you want.  Some things may be overpriced for what they are, and others may be underpriced (at least relative to other similar sources), so it helps to know the value of what you want, both in the antiques market and its value to you personally compared with other options you have.  For most items, the prices will be somewhat less than what you'd pay for the equivalent quality item new, if it's still available.

For example, a like-new large Le Creuset French oven that retails for $300/$160 at the Le Creuset outlet on sale might be $110 at Cookin'.  Which seems high if you're used to buying cheap pans that will need to be replaced soon, but if your heart is set on Le Creuset and you're ready to take good care of it,  here you can get a pan that will cost you less than $3 a year over the next 40 years.  Some of the older, more collectible Le Creuset items that you can't buy new anymore are higher-priced, since they're collectible; it might occasionally even sell for more than it ever retailed for, especially something first sold in the 60s when you could buy Le Creuset for $40. Do be sure to check your Le Creuset (or anything in the store) carefully--some of the pots are pristine first quality, some were factory seconds, some were great when new but are chipped or flaking or scorched or dulled or stained.  (I wouldn't buy a pot here that needed work unless it was unusually cheap.  But if you happen to find one at a garage sale or the Goodwill, here's some advice--don't buy it if the finish is flaking off, it was probably used over too high a flame and it will just keep flaking off into your food; I have never found anyone willing to re-enamel them, and Le Creuset usually won't honor the lifetime guarantee if the pot was abused.  Chips from impact are less likely to spread, and if they're on the rim, usually aren't a problem except you'll need to be more careful to keep it from rusting in that area. Message me to get cleaning tips and cleaning product ideas.)

The owner?  Well, she's always been neutral-to-nice to me.  She comes across as a little standoffish at first, nowhere near as friendly as Bonnie Slotnick of Bonnie Slotnick Vintage Cookbooks (the most similar shop I can think of, though it's much tidier and prettier and brighter), but if you truly appreciate her goods, and you either know the difference between a chinois and a tamis or are eager to learn, and especially if you DON'T complain to her that you could get if for half the price on eBay, she'll make a real effort to help you.

One last hint--I was usually the kind of mom that brought her kids everywhere, whether it was enjoying an art gallery or eating at a fine restaurant or going on ten-day cross-country ski trip with them on my back or polka-ing with them at an Oktoberfest, but I wouldn't bring tiny kids here, even if they're very well-behaved---there is just way too much to break, and it's so crowded that it would be so easy to create catastrophes by mistake.  I  seriously wouldn't even bring a large handbag in.  I generally diet for two weeks before coming here, it's THAT crowded.  (Besides, then you can actually USE the coeur a la creme mold that you score)

Perhaps I am simply not enough of a gourmand to understand why a used wooden spoon should cause me to part with $14.

However, I was glad to find a cooling rack here after my mom ruined mine when I took it home for Christmas. I'd have bought more, but so many of the everyday items seem overpriced for what they are, especially when I can get a new item for the same or lower price.

That said, I'll probably be back here anyway, as it is so close to my apartment.

dented just so Parisian boulangerie signage? check! pastis water jugs in plastic or stainless steel? check!  le creuset? check! turn around to look at something else that catches your eye and knock over a precariously stacked pile of junk? double check!!  the odd obsessive quality of this shop make it a once in awhile place to peek in for my man and me.  the proprietress can be harridan on one visit and sweet as pie the next while her subservient assistant is totally hateful, always. enjoy!!

This store is like a big Adrian magnet on Divis.  I don't need to buy anything there most of the time (well that's not entirely true, I always need to buy something there; I don't have a butter dish, a potato ricer or a Dutch oven etc... hint hint), but something about Cookin' sucks me in whenever I'm walking by.  The selection at Cookin' is amazing, I'm sure just about any cooking related item is there to be found on some shelf or in some corner.  It might be a bit dinged up, but will probably last longer than some high-speed assembly line piece of junk you could get at target, it's used to begin with.

I'm pretty happy that others seem to thing the prices here WANK!  I usually consider myself a tight-wad penny pincher, so I wasn't sure if it was me, or someone was trying to get as much as humanly possible for those used Waring blender and the chipped china serving platter.

The first time I walked into this place, I was totally overwhelmed by the cooking chaos that rules this store.  Imagine china plates and teacups piled 5 feet high, narrow walkways that are just begging for someone to knock over a pile of cast iron pots or iron age utensils and a guy working the counter who isn't exactly the friendliest...

Yet I give it 4 four stars.

Because among the chaos, there is a sense of order, and once you've got your bearings, there are some amazing finds for those of us who love to cook.  WHATEVER YOU NEED, you will find here.  It may take a little digging through the various "sections" but undoubtedly you'll find whatever you're looking for in 20 different incarnations, at 10 different price points. I bought a beautiful, like new, cast iron Le Creuset sauce pan here for half the price of any other cooking store.

Sure, if you have the time and energy to scour through dozens of garage sales you could probably find things for less, but really, it's not worth my time; and for that reason, Cookin' is the place to be.

Music lovers have Amoeba Records, and dedicated cooks come here to worship in the overcrowded, hopelessly cluttered aisles, filled with both novelty items and practical kitchen tools and utensils for amateur and professional chefs alike.

in another thirty odd years, i will be old...not decrepit, wrinkled, help-ive-fallen-and-i-cant-get-up old, but definitely eccentric weird spinster lady with frizzled salt-n-pepper hair and wears ballgowns at 11am old.

hopefully by then, i'll have become a semi-successful novelist and will have afforded to buy some property in this fair city.  i'll live in my fine home (somewhere in the castr-ission or castr-aight) with my two dogs, miniature turtles, silk worm farm, and possibly even a little mexican burro if he fits in my pad.  also, hopefully by then, as a collector of all thinks random and possibly useful, i will have amassed enough "junk" to open a little shop (preferably out of my garage or basement) like "cookin."

like cookin, i will keep the passageways small and the shelves high and packed to the nines.  every piece of "junk" will be some man's treasure, and the young folk will come in and ooh and aah over my kitschy possessions.  after they buy some random items at grossly discounted prices, they'll meander over to the side of the shop where i will be trying out my own take on the business model--random kitchen junk store that doubles as a bakery/florist as well...my little customers will buy yummy baked goods to decorate their new (but old) dessert platters with, and lilies and tuberoses to put in their new (but old) ceramic vases.

however, that whole thing is another 30years away.  in the mean time, i'll have to content myself with dropping in on cookin' while moseying down divis on my walk home.  so many bundt pans, tea sets, cake platters, butcher knives (the bakery/florist shop is all my plan)...oh man i can't wait to be a domestic little spinster with frizzy hair!!!

Organized chaos. That's my description of this place. In this small shop, things are piled up everywhere you look. Yet, it's not very difficult to figure out where you would find what. If you like kitchen antiques, you'll enjoy rummaging through this place. I had an eye on a caramel cutter since I actually can use one. Unfortunately, it had rust on it and I wasn't about to spend time and money refurbishing a piece that already cost $120. Looking through some of the items, prices aren't really bargains. Regardless of price, it's a fun place to browse for people who are into cooking.

What Buffalo Exchange is for clothes, Cookin' is for kitchen supplies.  If you don't see what you are looking for in all of the stacks of used goods, just ask.  The owner seems to know exactly what's in stock.  I bought Christmas cookie cutters here and got some treasures for a great deal.  Three stars because the display is a little overwhelming.

As Miriam pointed out, a lot of the items in this place are really overpriced especially considering they are used. Now, I have no qualms about buying anything used, but I'm not going to pay new prices for them. This is what thrift stores are for. An aquavit shot glass that reminds me of my Easter Dinner in Copenhagen was a great find, but not for 4 dollars, lady. Also, my boyfriend accidentally went into the pricing area (which was seriously separated from the regular area by a binder laying on the floor) and was scolded at by the owner for "crossing the barrier". Since when is a binder laying on the floor a "barrier"? I'm so goddamn tired of being treated like shit just becuase I dare wear jeans and sneakers while I'm shopping on a Sunday on Divisadero Street. So, yeah, I was dissapointed by this store. Lucky for me - I don't cook!

I was a semi regular at this place for several months before I could remember what the name of it was. Yes, it is poorly marketed, and variously known as ``the used kitchen stuff place,'' or ``the claustrophobic impending earthquake nightmare pots and pans all over the f**ing place place'', but if you want some quality cast iron, some cookbooks from the 80's (the all-flan diet, microwave mediterranean, etc), all orders of incomprehensible handheld gizmos, or a bunch of French grocer's signs, this is your place.  The owner/operator used to be really cranky, but she's warmed up over the past year or so, and the mess is a little more under control.
