First of all, are people really on here complaining about parking in the financial district/faneuil hall area on a Saturday night or paying a cover in boston on a Saturday night? Really??
Now that that's out of the way... I go to Coogan's after work for the $1 drafts and spinach dip. Never had any issues with the heat, bouncers, or bartenders, as others complain about. Yeah, so half the crowd may be underage but so what? You were all there once, too. Remember? Enjoy it for what it is or GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. We don't want snooty Cambridge hipsters ruining the place anyway :) -

$1 Bud Light, need I say more... Ok I will...
This place is in the financial district, right around the corner from Quincy Market...The Bartenders are cute and friendly! It is across the street from the LOFT... (BIG PLUS) and the most important thing... It is walking distance to the Boston Garden... $1.00 Beers at Coogan's or 8.00 Beers at the Garden... Hmm let me think about that... :-)
I have never been to Coogan's when there is a cover... I usually get there for happy hour and leave when its game time. Oh... The Food sucks... But who cares... After two or three beers does it really matter how the food is?
One Quick Tip: I usually park at Government Center and walk or catch a cab (5.00) to Coogins and then walk back to the garden to catch the game. Parking street parking can be iffy. If you are not going to see the game, try post office sq. parking garage. They are cheep after 4 PM. -

This is NOT for the weak at heart. $1 beers. Why do anything else? If you want to rock your 6 inch heels and have a kid from Everett with a blow-out spend his rent $ (lives in parents basement) on your drinks, head to Royale.
I will break out my Celtics hat and proudly yell over the music at friends/bartenders and let the pukers by when necessary. Good for you Coogan's, very well done indeed. See you Friday........... -

You need to take this place for what it is. If you're looking to get sloppy, $1 Bud Light wasted, then you've found the right place.
Ladies, enter the extremely dark and creepy back room at your own risk. Aside from the groping, there is always a 4 inch pool of beer-water-pee? on the ground and your shoes will most likely be un-wearable after coming here.
And as with any bar in this area, be prepared to stagger through the streets aimlessly until 3am looking for a cab when the bars let out.
All that said, my friends and I always have PLENTY to laugh about after a night at Coogan's. -

I'm what you might call a regular. I live up the street in Beacon Hill and black out before 9pm
Anywho, complaining about finding parking in faneuil hall after a B's game and on a Saturday night sounds like a huge...Tamara problem.
That is Exhibit A
Exhibit B.
People who complain about bouncers sucking is like comparing who the smartest retard is. All retarded but ones never really better then the other.
You're upset you can't cut people in line to get in just because you have a friend inside? How delusional can one person be? Maybe take the red line next time and you wont need to spend an hour trying to park.
Exhibit C.
I've never had a problem with the amount of alcohol in my bud light draft...perfect amount every time.
Exhibit D.
You're at a 2 before 70 bud lights and a 3.5 after. Relax.
In conclusion, If you have the balls to step into the house party gone wild that is Coogans, you'll love it. If you happen to be a pretentious nerd from Cambridge and can't let loose...not a yelp problem...you problem. -

The only reason we really go here is for the $1 beers, let's be honest. We always like to get our friends together during the day and head to the Coog. They have good pizzas, the service is always quick, can't really complain in that department.
What I will complain about if the temperature in there. We had a group in there (guys and girls) and sure it's winter but when you're in an establishment, they should at least make their customers want to stay. We all had to keep our coats on the whole time (couple hours) it was SO COLD. The heat was definitely not on because we were right below the vents. They also left the two front doors open all day and night. We tried to close it, then they opened them back up. Also asked the bartender, she said they had to keep them open so the bar looks open. It's dark out and there are people and lights on in here, people aren't that stupid they know when a bar is open. The bathroom was legit 20 degrees colder than the barroom.
I'm hate to complain because the beers were cheap and the company was great, but we all had to leave because we couldn't feel our feet anymore, I'm not exaggerating and I was wearing two pairs of socks. We moved on to a warmer bar and defrosted. To sum it up, don't go here in the winter. I think they can keep the beers cheap because they don't pay for heat. -

This place is the absolute epitome of Boston. I made the mistake of driving here on a Saturday night after a Bruins game and after 20 minutes of looking for parking, finally found somewhere (mind you this is after 2 assholes took the spot I was about to take).
That is exhibit A.
Exhibit B: The bouncers act like we are at some swanky New York City club in the Upper East Side. They make you pay a 5 dollar cover, make a line trail out the door and around the corner to make the place look cool, and if you have a friend inside who begs to get you in the bouncer refuses and doesn't even act nice about it.
Exhibit C: The drinks have hardly any alcohol in them and their shots are too mixed.
And finally Exhibit D: the absolute douche-baggery that hangs out here. TYPICAL Boston: dudes in Red Sox hats and Bruins Jerseys who are drinking 1 dollar beer. Dudes will literally come up to you and say, "Hi" as their pick up line or "This is a dance floor, why arn't you ladies dancing." Epic fail of a pick-up line.
The only good things about this place is that I was with my friends so luckily I didn't have to socialize with any new people, the drinks are not too expensive, and the the music IS VERY GOOD except when they do that techno shit.
All in all, I'll probably return because my friends will want to go but let's put it this way: I think I'll change my FB location to something other than Boston because I'm sad to be associated with this bar in any shape or form. -

Love at first sight = Bud Lights $1, Sam Adams $2! (Prices do vary though, check out below!)
Everytime I've been there has been no cover, but they do stamp if you leave, so I'm guessing there is one later on into the night.
Downfall -when the bar gets busy, service tends to go down-hill. Expect to wait for a drink, better off ordering a pitcher ;)

The good: $1 Bud Lights (or whatever beer the decided to rotate to), your not going to find a better deal in Boston.
The bad: Unless you go during the day, its going to be packed with blackouts slamming down the $1 beers.
It's not a terrible place to do some day drinking, but I'd avoid it for any other occasion -

One dollar beers with great people watching. I went on a weekend with locals and was told this place is full of suit-wearing, well-funded finance guys getting wasted on a Friday night, so if you're a girl looking for deep pockets, I'd imagine this would be the best place to make that happen.
Not that I would ever do that.Listed in: Get Out of Town, Bah-stahn

Maybe I would've better enjoyed this place had I been prepared for what I was stepping into on a Saturday night. Maybe "$1 draft beers" should've been a clue. But right as I crossed the street to get into line, a guy walks out at 11pm, projectile vomits into the street, and walks away waving as if he had just won Miss America.
The classiest of establishments it is not.
If your feet weren't sticking to the floor, they were swimming in 1-in of cheap beer. There's ONE bar with at most 3 bartenders trying to attend to the full capacity of the room, which means your one hour wait in line (plus $5 cover) will be lengthened by a one hour wait for beer. And once you do get your beer, drink it fast before another drunk patron stumbles into you and spills half of it onto your pants.
Then again, if all you're doing here is trying to get the most bang for your fake-id-buck, then more power to ya. -

Went here last night for Trivia and of course the dollar drafts we've been hearing about. It's bro-city for sure, but we didn't mind! The trivia is really fun (it's the 4 quarter type) and it lasts about 2 hours. There's TVs to watch the games and whatever else is on.
It's $1/bud light or budweiser and $2/sam adams or miller high life, the bartenders were attentive, waitresses - not so much but it was really busy. We loved the music, a mixture of some rock/punk/rap so something for everyone throughout trivia. Top 3 teams get prizes I believe.
Nachos - AWESOME. So good.
After the games are done, I highly recommend finding another bar. The music is really loud and it gets s-l-o-p-p-y. We stayed this time and am currently paying for it at work (ridiculously hungover) but wow do people get reckless. Girls bathroom had one clogged toilet and the other was occupied by a girl throwing up for a solid 22 minutes while about 10 girls waited for her to be done - they had to call in a waitress to get her out and she was in rooough shape.
All in all, a pretty fun night, no dancing or anything but that's alright. Give it a try! -

Stopped in for a liquid lunch the other day. Dollar drafts on a Thursday afternoon seemed pretty good. Also got buffalo tenders, which were nicely breaded and just hot enough. Wish there were more, however. The nachos were also pretty good and served on a nice platter!
While our waitress was a little slow, she was very pleasant. Will definitely go again! -

Coogans is a decent bar on the outskirts of the financial district and Fanuiel Hall. You can beat the price of the beer here, they often run a variety of $1 and $2 specials. It is better as an after work hangout than a late night Friday spot. The beer cheap beer specials can bring in a cheap late night crowd. The bartenders are friendly and quick.

What can I possibly say that is bad about Coogan's except for sometimes the girl's bathroom floors wet and maybe once I got too drunk and puked on the corner of the dance floor..?
Going to the bathroom; they are really pretty! The doors and the floor is like a stone tile, it's nice, but the way its slanted slightly or maybe I'm just making that excuse up for them.. if someone were to spill a drink, which I tell myself that when I go, the floor stays wet near the toilets and it's kind of gross.
My friend and I came across Coogan's by accident last spring, we had parked on Milk Street and were walking towards Faneuil when we saw this place with open windows and we decided to check it out. It was love at first sight when we read the sign on the table that said; Bud Lights = $1. It was the end of going to Faneuil; at least I think so for that night.
We've been back a bunch of time throughout the summer and this fall. We got at random times, been there in the afternoon, late night, dinner time, crowds generally isn't too busy. At night it is yes, dinner has a work environment crowd which only makes sense for the area they're in and the day time isn't too crowded but there are people there. It seems like the have a decent following of people.
The food is semi alright; good enough pub grub, but I wouldn't recommend the nachos. Fries are good; sometimes we make them into cheesy fries when we need that extra crap in us after a few beers. We just stick with appetizers to pick on, haven't gotten real meals there, they offer a lot. I also love that they have the NESN/ESPN on no matter what time and the atmosphere is chill.
I'd give this a great recommendation to check out. I'm not sure about a cover charge here, when we've gone, we haven't paid a cover. I checked off "happy hour" for this bar because of the cheap beer. The shots are waaay over priced though so keep that in mind after a few beers and thinking you're saving money.. the shots will get you up there in price.Listed in: I wanna go., Drinking happens here., i heart beer

How have I missed this place??? A downtown bar with no cover, $1 drafts, amazing music, lots of tables, and filled with men?! Coogan's where have you been all my life?
My friends and I stumbled upon this little bar after choosing to bypass the huge line outside of Sissy K's. I swear I've never even heard of this place. While it was on the empty side when we first showed up, I knew as soon as I walked in without handing over the typical $5 cover charge this was going to be a good spot. The positives just kept rolling in - my group was able to sit together at a table then stand up without having to mark our territory with coats, the bartender was quickly handing out decently sized $1 bus light drafts, my favorite songs were being played one after the other, and guys just kept pouring in! I haven't seen this many guys at a bar since I accidentally went to gay night at Estate...yay!
Definitely coming back! -

Without the dollar beers this place has no redeeming value. I went on a Friday night at 5:45 after the Christmas tree lighting and the music was BLASTING, we asked the manager to turn it down and he absolutely refused, and they were playing Augustana, not exactly party music....beyond the noise, it's a dive that usually fills up with douche Boston sports fans looking for cheap beer. Avoid.

Coogan's has many drawbacks--filled with the kind of guys that I like to refer to as "Abercrombie frat boy" types, uninspired food, sometimes it smells, etc etc.
But $1 drafts all day every day make it all worthwhile. Not enough to make it 5 starts, but pretty damn close :) -

If I could, I wouldn't even give this place one star.
This bar had a bartender that thought they could get away with ripping me off! I went here last Friday with my friends and before the tips were figured in I had a total of $91 and then the next day I see my amount go up to $119. I know myself, and sadly I'm not the most expensive tipper. I had a manager send me my receipts and you can clearly see on the receipts where I leave a $2 tip on a $13 charge...and yet miraculously the total amount is somehow $25? Isn't that curious...and even more interesting is that since I have incredibly messy handwriting for a girl (I can't fix it) it is so obvious that whoever wrote in the total wasn't me!!!
Clearly I forgot to write in the total amount and some pig of a bartender decided to give themselves a $12 tip and write in their own total at the bottom!!!! My advice to that bartender is to add a 1 in front my of my 2 next time...because now I just caught you in a blatant lie. OOhhhhh and they did it again later in the night, turning $2 into $12. I will never go here again, I am beyond pissed off at the nerve of this bartender and I'm canceling the charges on my credit card. -

I've experienced cleaner bathrooms (the mens room had broken glass, vomit, and toilet water all over the floor. When I explained the situation to a staff member, a large trash bag was placed over the sickly toilet. The water, glass, and vomit weren't cleaned up even within a half hour) at fraternity parties than at Coogans.
Furthermore, the bartenders were unfriendly, impersonal, and slow to respond. I waited 25 minutes for a drink tonight. If I pay a cover to get in somewhere, I don't ever expect to receive the shitty service provided at Coogans.
That being said, I had one good experience here. The bartender on the aforementioned evening was a sweetheart, and even allowed me to request a song. Unfortunately, we only remember the bad times. -

Wow there are some brutal reviews for this pretty decent looking bar. Apparently I don't "get it" because this watering hole was ok in my opinion. I mean it was definitely nothing special and I probably could care less if I ever step foot back in the place, but people seem to really hate this joint. This review is solely based on the bar and not the restaurant, which seems to have pissed off a lot of Boston Yelpers.
I got a seat at the bar...had a nice bartender on a busy Saturday night that was attentive...and good tunes in the background. So for that it gets the 3 stars.
Now it loses 2 stars because it does not have a damn jukebox!?!? They simply play music from their computer system and take no requests. I am known by my friends as a jukebox Nazi.
It also loses points because the crowd seemed like there were more teens than over 21 drinkers. I do not care if younger people drink in a bar, I mean I have been drinking at them since I was 15, but sometimes you want a chill night with pals. Some of the most annoying people in there seemed to be youngsters that were super excited to be in a damn bar.

Wait service, not good. Appetizers not good either. $1 bud lights on Fridays after a ridiculous work week--I guess you can have 3 stars for that! If you are in the mood for a crowded, college feeling atmosphere, and want to drown your stressful work week w' cheap beer, this is the place to do it. Warning--this is far from a classy establishment!

Listen, all I'm saying is that if you get a party of 14 people, you might want to check on them once in awhile. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when even though you're seated at a table and have a waitress, you still have to go the bar to order your drinks. And don't tell me it's busy or because our party was too big - we were literally the only people in there from 8 PM - on.
The food is pretty standard bar food, even though they try to fancy it up. I have to say I'm kind of scared/tempted by their $10 lobster specials though. Our group ordered calamari (good), nachos (meh), boneless buffalo 'wings' (why can't we just call them chicken tenders? and also, they were overcooked), fried mac 'n cheese bites (tasteless), and spinach and artichoke dip (tasty).
The only good thing I can say about this place is that they serve 22 oz Magners, but then again - they charge $6 for it. SIX DOLLARS. I can go to Charlie's and get that shit for $4.50. And Charlie's food is better, to boot.
Gah, I'm hungover. -

Been here a few time and have had mixed experiences!
It was a friends birthday and we all wanted a low key place with cheap drinks and a dance floor. The drinks are decent and the beers are cold. The place is small and it wasn't that crowded, even for a Friday night. The lighting is dim but comfortible but the dance floor is tiny. 15 to 20 people and it is packed. As for the staff and old men bouncers.....that would get a big fat ZERO stars. This is way...
As the night went on people were coming and going wishing happy birthdays and staying for a few drinks. Around 11:30 that night the birthday boy walked one of our friends to a cab and to get some air. After that he tried to return in. The door guy wouldn't let him back in. Saying he was drunk and that he was entering and exiting the place to much. After a little while I walked out side to see what was going on and then went back in to tell his girlfriend and the 10 others that we were all there with and the same door man told me that I was not allowed back in. So then the night turned into banging on the glass windows to try and get the attention of our friends, as the loud music nulified the numerious calls that we had made. So after all of that we made our way to the Black Rose. Not a big fan of that place but it was a short walk and they have some nice Irish tunes.
So Coogan's stay away! -

So I wouldn't recommend this for a Friday evening - not because the crowd is particularly underaged, or frat-boy-ish or anything like that but just because they're choice of music is, ehhhh, eclectic.
However I've also been here for lunch with some coworkers and overall I must say the quality of the food was far superior to most other pubs in the area. They also have a "buy five lunches, get one free" deal. I'm not sure I'll be returning often enough for that, but it's a nice touch. -

I think this is the only establishment that will card my 40-year-old boss AND ask for a second form of ID while my underage coworker drowns herself in $1 drafts on the other side of the door (maybe she's just sneaky).

It didn't start off great since the bartender at the bar was not so helpful in getting me a simple beer. Rude, short, and sarcastic. Ugh! I'll wrap it up to she was having a bad day.
Moved over to a new table and the waitress was much better. We had a big group of people coming so I was able to grab some tables right at the edge to people watch. The wall windows open up onto the street and on a beautiful warm day it would have been awesome but it was cool so we closed them up. Again the waitress helped and brought drinks and food out and kept the bills in check.
For $1 and $2 beers it was pretty sweet but of course limited selection for that price.
The clam chowder, while marked as Award winning was OK. It was warm, could have been hotter, but it helped on a cool day.
The clam strip platter with fries was hot and good but I like whole belly clams better. The chips with spinach dip was so so. Not many ate them and I would pick something different next time.
The burgers/burger plates weren't that great either so I guess I would stick to the $1 beers and get food elsewhere. -

...even worse than The Place.
actually much worse, if you can believe that.
It's so dark and dirty and never has a line for a reason.
$5 cover, $5 beers, no coat check. I know because people just throw their coats all over the unfilled bar and some girl got hers stolen by the end of the night.
The bartenders are terrible.

Fail.
Most of my weekend trips to Fanuiel involve heading down there with no gameplan, and ultimately deciding which line I'm most willing to wait in. Coogan's isn't even a consideration anymore. Always the same d-bag bouncer keeping a huge line outside, when you can tell by looking through the window that the place isn't even half full. I know plenty of places pull this move, but this place doesn't have the right. Lame bar, chode bouncers, nothing special at all. -
Review from David S.

Ugh. I went back for another lunchtime turkey burger and got a huge plate of bad service. They charged me extra for a salad that the last time was a swap (but how could it be an additional side if they didn't give me the fries I asked to swap it for?), the waitress pretty much disappeared for twenty minutes when we wanted the check, and then tried to charge us the 'new prices'... which weren't on the menu yet. Then she left for another ten minutes to reconcile it. We paid the amount printed on the menu and walked out.
The burger was great, but... I'll find another place to get a turkey burger in the future. And honestly... the prices were OK last time, but two bucks more an entree is ridiculous. Seriously. Even if the bad service is free.1 Previous Review: Show all »

In Boston for a business meeting - and Coogan's is probably not the ideal place to talk business, unless that business is something out of The Departed.
This is definitely a bar scene, with a loooong list of beers on tap and even more bottles, lots of kegs clanging around outside, and aged chairs and table that show more modern day scars of debauchery.
I had the clam chowder, which was rightfully creamy, but had more potato than clams. The fish and chips were well fried with very little oil apparent, but a little bland. The Cuban sandwich was a surprisingly strong offering and the grilled chicken salad held up as well. But, in a city with such incredible restaurants, save this place for some St. Patrick's Day carousing. -

This bar is nothing special. I can have fun here because I have ridiculous friends and we roll deep. Word.
Even though Coogan's is not unique at ALL, it's not a bad choice if you want to do the generic downtown thing. It is so weird to walk by lines 10 years long at the other FH hotspots, and then just breeze right into this bar right around the corner. Nothing makes me more annoyed than a line to get into an un-amazing bar. Is Sissy K's really all that better? Really? Who knows.
Anyway, my friends and I were there to dance, so we did. I had to hunt down a barback to replace the toilet paper in the restroom - he handed me 4 rolls and asked me to do it. Um, I work here now? Whatever, I got over it after a round of red headed sluts. The music started off as top-40/remixes, but then the endless selections of random hip-hop killed our dancing buzz. I don't think I would avoid Coogan's, it's just that there are 25 other bars in the area just like it. -

A friend and I recently decided to stop by for their trivia night. Upon arriving, we found the bar area to be packed with lots of people, but decided to put in our name for the party of 3 we would have. The following conversation took place:
Hostess: Hi
My friend: Hi. We're going to have 3 for trivia please.
Hostess: Are you the party of 10?
My friend: No, we'll have 3 for trivia.
Hostess: There aren't any tables right now
*blank stares all around*
As we left the bar, we walked by the windows to see numerous empty tables in the back. No offer to help, no time estimate, nothing. Talk about a bad first impression.
