I am loathe to review this place badly, since a friend recommended it, but there were 2 issues we had with them.
Firstly, when we checked in (at 9pm, mind you), we went to the room and immediately were like "Um, why does it smell like beer in here? Why is the bed unmade? Why is the garbage can overflowing?" That's right, the room was not made up. At 9pm at night. To their credit, they got us another room right away, but this was not the last of it.
In the next room, everything seemed great. But we soon discovered that there were quite a few ants gathering by the (empty) fridge. I wrestled with the idea of bitching management out again, but I was dying of hunger at the time and was hoping that since there was no food in the place, the ants would go away. And they did thin out, but we flicked quite a few scouts off of ourselves during our stay. Makes sense - if a place doesn't clean their rooms by the end of the day, I'd overrun them too, if I were an ant.
I really should have said something and complained, but I didn't. Wimp.

this is my go-to hotel in Santa Cruz. I guess once I called a bunch of places, ended up here and have been back repeatedly because of their clean rooms and good prices.

The greeting was great. We arrived early and a shift change was taking place at the desk. The first lady we spoke too said the room was not yet ready. We waited about 2 hours for the room, but come to find out we could have been checked into another room sooner, so we finally get checked into the room. Disappointed room was small, beds were hard, black mold was in tub. very cramped and funny smell. Great concept to make it a boutique room, but it was cramped. We called and asked for extra blankets and were told they did not have any, strange for a sleeping establishment not to have extra blankets. Complimentary breakfast was another disappointment muffins were cut in half, juice was warm, nothing was kept on ice and nothing appeared to be super fresh or inviting. Sanitary it was not. We plan to visit Santa Cruz often, but will not stay here again. Not close to boardwalk, car still required or taxi.
