I had intended on writing something special for my 400th review, specifically a review of a dear friend of mine.  I actually wrote the review before I went to Austin, and well before I reached 400, and although the visit wasn't what I expected, the review didn't change but I'm going to keep it to myself.

Anyway, enough about that for now.  On to the Continental Club!

Live music.   Live music.   Live music.  Apart from the real summer weather and BBQ, this is what I came to Austin for.  Oh and the tour guide/birthday boy, also known as OOTTTPIL.  We'll get to him in a second.

This is a cozy club where you can get within sweat castoff distance of some of your favorite (or soon to be favorite) acts, all while enjoying cheap but good beer (I am still getting over the prices in Austin).

Although OOTTTPIL and I came here for no other reason but to check it out (more for him than me), we scored twice that night- once when I got to sneak in without paying (how that happened, I don't know.  I didn't look THAT good that night), and with Wayne Hancock as the act.  Now, I'm a big fan of all music, but I was just amazed at how awesome this band was.

Not only that, but the decor was fitting for just such a band- it's almost like a scavenger hunt with all the kitschy items gracing the walls.  This place is just oozes cool, and decades-old charm.  I felt a strong urge to put my best pin-up gear on and color my lips with the richest red lipstick I could find.

Basically, this place is a perfect venue to hang with one (or more) of your favorite people, listening to great music.

If (or when) I move to Austin, this will be a regular haunt.

This place is great!

Think Austin in 1976. Cool people, good bartenders, lots of great music.

Went to the Clyde and Clem's Whiskey Business w/ White Ghost Shivers show tonight and was surprised to see that they had a line of 30 people waiting to get in at 11:00pm.

My only issues are that the bartenders can be a little slow and the bathrooms can have some serious lines.  Besides that, this place is classic. A NO HIPSTERS ESTABLISHMENT!

Local and awesome!

This little club is so good, they should take it on the road and have it spend a month in every town in America so everyone can hang out there for a while.

Or at least that's what I'm sayin'

Love this place.

When I want an Austin-y night I grab an inexpensive meal at Zen, a scoop of Amy's ice cream, a drink at the Hotel San Jose and then walk across the street to the Continental Club for some live music.  The beers are inexpensive and cold, the music generally a good mix of blues, Americana, folk, etc. and a great mix of ages and types of people from old hippies to students to businessmen.  If you're feeling real adventurous head out the back door and make some new friends in the smoking area.

When a review reads like a biography, you know it's a special place which has intertwined itself into the lives of many. Such is the Continental Club. Part legend, part sonic excellence, part fantasy land, this place has been home to some of my fondest memories in town. Be it a place to see a great show, or a sanctuary stop on the way home from work, or a great saturday afternoon tipsy, when you go here you find happy folks and one of them is you!

While I had been going here for about 10 years, I really started frequentin the place around 2007 when I was training for a mountain climb. I realized the only way to get through the drudgery of training was to see a lot of music and drink a lot in the off-hours. And you NEVER miss here. It's almost as though, when you cross the threshold, you're crossing the river Styx and only quality folks have the coin to enter. In a town that wears the crown for live music, the CC is the jewel in that crown.

This place doesn't have a super friendly doorman flagging you down to enter. It doesn't need that. It doesn't need the best cocktails in the world. But when you go in, you WILL have top notch waitresses attending to you.  And on occaision, they have been known to double as dancing sideshows.

When you are aware of the history of the folks that have played here and continue to play here, it is no surprise that the sound in the room is so good. Regulars such as  Red Volkearts, Alejandro Escovedo and James McMurtry are accustom to the finest studios. So when you see great new upstarts playing here, they will be great and they will sound great.

One thing I'd like to hilight is the Saturday Matinee with Red Volkeart. This guy is a guitar legend and a fine crowd comes out to dance the afternoon away. Honkybilly with style. Even if you don't dance (and I DONT) just come to watch and listen.

For Texas Rock, Great Musicianship, Jazz, Twang, Honkey Tonk, Rockabilly with a sense of history, an eye on the future and dream-comfort-memory to spare...... This is THE place in Austin.

Places like the Continental Club present a challenge to review for a couple of reasons:  first off, some of the very things that are flawed about the place are what give it its charm, second, given that it's a music venue, your mileage may vary based upon whoever the act is that's playing that night.

Given that my most recent trip in was hatched in order to watch David Garza's New Years' Eve-Eve set, I can't imagine any place that I'd have rather been than at Continental last night.  Garza was darn near burning the place down onstage, and we all goofed with reckless abandon accordingly.  The things that have always been somewhat annoying about this place continue to be so, namely the bathroom so cramped you'd think it was a converted closet, and the close quarters of the club itself: when you rub elbows with people here, you *really do* rub elbows.  But none of that seems to matter when the act you're seeing onstage reminds you of why the Continental's special.  Because stuff like this? Nobody does it better.

I had my red lips, pumped hair, liquid liner, leopard cardigan, faux-leather pants, and ankle-high biker boots ready to go.  I figured I could mix what was in my closet and come up with (what I expected to be) the perfect rock-a-billy/hell-billy look for what I thought was a rock-a-billy bar...

Continental is not for rock-a-billy types.  It is for EVERY TYPE!

Old, young, lesbians, straight, couples, singles, creepy guys, hot guys, pretty girls with blonde hair, punky girls with pixie cuts... it's everyone!

The space is cramped, I hear the men's bathroom is even more so... it has this vivid, red back wall that glows behind the band and the acoustics are niiiiiiice.  The bartenders are busy, because the bar is small, but they will serve you fast and stiff and not throw any attitude other than a look of, "Drink up!"

Sit, stand, drink, dance, whatever... Continental Club, expect me again... just perhaps in a slightly less ridiculous get-up.

The Continental Club has always been on the top of my "Favorite Places in Austin" list.  Knock on wood, I have had nothing but good experiences there.

It is the perfect venue for checking out some really good acts for cheap.  And the people are super cool: not only the staff, but the customers as well.  I found it especially fascinating that, upon my last visit a couple weeks ago, I discovered that the bartender and I share the same name.  She was fabulous, of course.  Plus, some very friendly locals started chatting us up, as soon as we sat down at the bar.  I felt like I had a whole new group of best friends.  One of them - oh, what was his name? - actually gave me a hug goodbye, as he headed out the door.  Nice guy.

The club gets a little crowded...and due to it's SoCo location, the crowd tends to be mixed...but it's a great place.  The sound is always good and the bands generally are as well.

All in all, if I were in Austin, and had just one place to visit, I think I'd pick this place.

An Austin icon.

I've been here a handful of times, the first, my introduction to the awesomeness that is Pong.  And, again, for Pong last night.  And a few times in between.  It's a small space with pretty good acoustics.  As other people have said, the crowd is diverse, as is the music offered here.  That, I believe, is probably my favorite thing about The Continental Club.  I also love the retro fifties/ late night talk show looking stage, it creates an excellent backdrop.

Avoid the Lone Star, it's a tad pricey... if you're going to spend that much for beer, just step it up a bit.  They also have a full bar.  If you're lucky enough to nab a table or some chairs towards the back, you'll have a waitron, as well.  The tables annoy me slightly, though, it seems that so many more people could fit into the place if they'd just push them to the side or something.  Also, as my friend said, "If you're going to have just one beer on tap, this is the best option."  They have Guiness on draft, and that's the only one.

Yeah, I dig this place.

To be honest, this place is a fricken dump and the guy taking money at the door was a jackass... But, if you have a heartbeat, you can't help having fun here.

It was my first time in Austin.  My girlfriend and I met up with a group of friends for dinner and then headed over to the Continental Club.  There was some band called Haybale playing, who supposedly won a Grammy award...?  They played classic country music.  Not my music of choice, but we did get out on the dance floor.

This place wouldn't be one of the first places I'd think of to go to, but it's a good change of pace every once in awhile.

It's no surprise that Continental Club is a swanky joint being situated on one of the trendiest streets in Austin.  We have caught a handful of shows here, primarily Guy Forsyth's happy hours ones, and find it to be a great listening room for live music.  We talk ourselves into the happy hours shows since they are early and usually filled with great artists, but I swear every time we go we end up spending about $60 on drinks!  For happy hour that seems a little steep for two people, either that or we secretly drink a lot.  I don't know, but we keep experimenting with ordering different beverages to get our bill down.

Other than that, the place is a great Austin club and not filled with the annoying college crowd or loud talkers who seem to crash live music around town far too often.  This is a nice place to hang with real Austin folks listening to real Austin music.

My most recent visit to this now historical landmark was to see Jon Dee Graham's return  post car accident. As usual he put on a great show for as long as he could last, for fucks sake the guy had his spleen removed three weeks earlier after a terrible auto accident.

The sound is good, the vibe is cool, drinks are flowing. One of my favorite intimate venues coast to coast.

Week 2.  I'm upgrading to 5 stars.  I had another amazing night at the Continental Club and I have perma grin.  Incredible time.

So, my update is for the comment I made about the Continental having a large sleazy guy population.  It felt like a meat market last week.  This week's crowd was much different.  The club was filled with LOTS of hot boys, local celebrities (I literally was rubbing elbows with Jim Eno), a few tools (fist pumping guy, too drunk gay boy and guy on acid), and a plethora of  lesbians.  Now, I'm not homophobic in the least.  My last roommate, who is one of my best friends to this date is a certified dyke.  But they were everywhere.  I felt like I was at the Egyptian Room in Portland.  The lesbo couple in front of me were grinding all up on each other and then proceeded to try and mack on me.  I'm a lesbian magnet for some reason.  If only it was the hot drummer macking on me.....
I guess my point is that it's not a meat market (or is it?) and that the crowd is really, really, really diverse.

Anyway, great night.  I'm falling more in love with the Continental and I have a feeling this is the beginning of a very beautiful relationship.

The Continental Club is good but I don't love it. The cover charges can be high, the drinks expensive and the joint overcrowded on a busy night. There is usually some kind of surcharge when you use a credit card (well it's posted as such, but I rarely buy drinks this way so I don't know if this is enforced). The music is usually old school rock and roll and Americana.
Parking can be found in and around South Congress - which is usually not a problem after dark.

Dropping one star because 2 dudes are NOT supposed to have to stand in a tiny closet together to do their business.

Past that, The Continental lives up to the buzz. It is a no-frills music venue just like mom used to make. The bar was busy, but didn't treat you like they were doing you a favor (which they kind of are after standing packed amongst the humanity for 2 hours). Drinks were reasonably priced  and served up pretty swiftly considering the crowd.

The sound mixologist was totally on top of his job with all the crazy instrument substitutions that the band threw at them. That is not always the case in some bars. I'd recommend catching David Garza if possible as they put on a heck of a show.

But still, that restroom - Wow.  I think they forgot to build it until opening day 20 yrs back when someone said, "OK, it's the big night... Hey, I thought YOU built the bathroom!"  I'm thinkin that they could apply for a government bailout to get that fixed up.

In either case, a trip to The Continental will definitely make you say, "Oh yeah, baby. I'm standing in Austin, TX."

I always thought it's a country music club. Finally we went there before a friend leaving town. It's one of Austin bucket list thing to do.
The band is for teens I feel. They are like yelling rock'n roll style. Two of them have long hair. One of them looks like girl because of the long hair. Not really interested in their music, but staring at their girly long hair whole night long.

I am a fan of the Continental Club. After reading the reviews, we decided to try it out.

The show was probably the worst I could have imagined, actually somewhat painful. Anyone who was there that night (including the owner) probably knows what show I'm talking about, because the feeling seemed pretty unanimous. So, I won't review the show and will skip on to the rest of it.

What I liked about CC: very diverse crowd, very fun crowd, good service, and a very cool (very "SoCo") joint. The drinks were good, prices were fair - except for the cover charge (ouch, my husband is still complaining about that).  I heard from many patrons there that night that they've been there before because the music is usually fun and they get to dance.

We met some of the coolest people there. I love Austin - people of all walks of life really seem to get out and not be afraid to cut loose and have fun!

Warning
According to the surgeon general, women should not drink alcoholic beverages including distilled spirits, beer, coolers, and wine during pregnancy because of risk of birth defects.  (Posted in the women's room at CC)

Door guy let us in for free and stamped our hands.  I checked a poster that said entry was $20 so I guess we just made $40!

"What is a speed shop?" I ask My Sweetie as I point to a neon "Speed Shop Since 1948" sign - "A place where they sell speed?  A place where everything happens really fast?"  We have arrived very early to the CC... as a matter of fact, this is the first time either of us has been here during daylight hours.  We are touring South Congress for the Road Ralley and enjoying the sites of altered cars and women.
She says, "Isn't that a red car on top of the sign?  I think it is a car place."  Sure nuff, the red car is blending into the red wall and I missed it.

Fresh, velvety smooth Guinness is different in the daylight hours when it almost feels wrong to be at the Continental Club. Fishnet stockinged Betty Pages (3 of them) bounce to the bar with the confidence of everyman'sfantasypaintedontheirlips.

My Sweetie looks at me and says, "Get behind me Satan!"  Whaaaa?  Was she talking about the Betty Pages, the music, the Guinness or the night?  What does this mean?  Does she think I am Satan and she wants me to get behind her?  Does she think she is worse than Satan? Is this a saying from rural Iowa that has eluded me all of these years?  Is it an expression of happiness or sadness?  The music is pretty loud so I decide not to risk it... TOO MANY RIDICULOUS QUESTIONS TO SHOUT at a bar that is only half packed so I just smiled and decided it meant she was really happy at that very moment.

"I've got an uptown woman she's got some low down dirty ways
She treats me so bad she keeps me in a daze."

Blues Specialists lead man on Harmonica then breaks into the toe-tappin' "Flip flop and fly." Fifty year old woman in shorts and red hoodie doing her best white man's overbite to "I don't care if I die, don't ever leave me, don't ever say goodbye"  while four guys in "Mad Greasers" jackets are watching her every move.  This is the night for the Fonze AND the entire cast of Grease The Movie to step out of the back room and start singing.

New and improved warning
According to the surgeon general, men should not drink alcoholic beverages including distilled spirits, beer, coolers, and wine during happy hour because of an increased risk of beer goggles and decreased night vision. (to be posted in the men's room of the CC on my next visit)

As we were leaving, I showed the doorman my stamped hand and asked if I can get into the next two shows and he said, "No, we change the stamp when the next band starts."  Unfulfilled expectations... CC you are such a tease!

Later we learned that we just missed Jesse James!  Oh MY Sandra Dee...!

The $10 cover initially turned me off to this place.  I wasn't too keen on paying to hear 2 honky-tonk bands I'd never heard of (Cornell Hurd Band and The Derailers), but I did, and it was worth it.  Both bands were really entertaining and talented, and the crowd was friendly and energetic.  It was a crowd though; people were really packed in there. Don't go here if you demand much "personal space."

At 29, I was among the younger people at the bar that night, but the population was pretty mixed.  Patrons ranged in age from late 20s-mid70s, and wore everything from Hawaiian shirts to western wear to swing dance outfits.  I danced with a couple of older (like my dad's age) guys who were quite talented at the 2-step, and that was surprisingly fun.  Seriously ladies, don't turn a guy down for a dance if you're standing un-escorted near the dance floor.  It's not like you're getting married to the dude; it's just a dance, and you'll probably enjoy it.

I had a few drinks from the bar, and I thought it was pretty expensive, but I also think someone else's beers might have been on my tab.  I'm not sure though because it's not like you get an itemized receipt.  So, drink price is really my only complaint.  Continental Club definitely makes my list of Austin institutions worth visiting again.

Continental Club is one of the first places I look when I'm in the mood for live music in Austin.  My most recent visit was to see Ian McLagan and just like almost every other show I've seen there - it didn't disappoint.

The negatives are all true - the bathrooms are small, the place is a little dirty, and it can be hard to get service on a crowded night.  Yes, it can be loud - but the sound is always mixed well.  Somehow those same things are what add character.   Because the stage and the club itself are fairly small - it adds an energy that's hard to match at larger venues.  It's not trying to be something it's not.  It's all about the music here and they continually book some of the best around.

Doesn't work for me... been there maybe 5-6 times over a many year span and always am thinking why did I do this again... what did I not learn the first time? It is dirty, most venues are way too loud, seating is poorly arranged, sound quality not so good, seems like some shows are sold beyond capacity(I'm not happy being a sardine), crowded situations make it very difficult for waitstaff to provide reasonable service, much of the music is nothing special... a few shiny moments here and there... Hey no smoking!
I am thankful for the Gallery upstairs... bumped up to three stars for that alone... Gallery slips through cracks, minus that star

I don't listen to country. I don't line dance or swing. But Red Volkert, a local performer sure made me want to. Girls were a-spinnin' and I was a-chuggin' (the beer my friend's dad, yes dad, bought me). There was a great crowd of all ages, and the kicker: the stamp on my hand said 'fuck cancer'.  The Continental Club is how I was introduced to Austin-- and what an impression it made.

So far, hands down my favorite place to see a band in Austin.  They have seating which is nice and people respect that and don't stand right in front of you.  The happy hour Shiners are $2.50 and there are speedy and tentative waitresses there to feed you beers all night.

There is room to stand and get very close to the stage as well as an area to dance up front.  No, I don't dace.  Ever...

Anyway... just about any night of the week you will find someone worth listening to.  Go by, check it out, you won't be disappointed.  That is, if you like the alt country crowd.  It doesn't hurt that it's on S. Congress with a ton of great places to eat a cats toss from the front door.

The Continental Club is one of the last bastions of what Austin was like years before even I moved here. Are you looking for a place to hang out and it really doesn't matter who you are? COME HERE!   I have seen so many different kinds of people in this place. Probably the most diverse crowds in Austin. You will see yuppies hanging out with Tattoo artists!

Actually this place is one of the only places in Austin that I feel comfortable going to by myself. I always wind up meeting people and hanging out. OK so the cover charges are getting a bit exorbitant; IE $20 the other night for a show...but in my opinion, it's worth it!  Some of the best bands around play here. I have never been there and not been entertained!

This place was kinda cool. like weird cool...  We went on a Wednesday night to catch a show and the bar itself was teeming with people and it took us a few minutes to get some drinks. My beau got his beer and I asked for red wine.  (priced 7 dollars a glass after a 7 dollar cover)
-"what kind?"
-"any kind is fine but pinot noir would be nice.."
-"we don't have that."
-"what do you have"
-"Cabernet."
-"that's cool."

why bother asking me what red wine i want if there's only one kind? for emphasis? that was weird.

So the beau and i walk to the back. YAY there's a miss pac man table and a pool table!!! and some dixie cups stacked up in the corner? and a weird totem pole by an old unused coffee machine and piles of stored shit? uh. alright. we were informed we could go have a smoke on the back patio after we bough *7* dollar cigarettes from the door guy.

the patio is not a patio, its an all access alley where the dumpsters are. some drunk woman was there trying to smoke all my cigs and evesdrop on our convo while involving herself in it.

the show was a kinda country, more rockabilly and people were dancing and having fun. it's a vintage-ey venue with kinda unattractive staff and a bit of attitude but hey. i guess that's the austin approach.

(the cocktail waitress, however, was outrageously cute, charming, pretty, and helpful!)

I need to hang out more at this place. Last month I caught a show with Guitar Shorty and it was awesome. I had the best night of my life ever since I moved to Austin. The people that go there are not the trendy, snobby hipster types. If anything, it's a place where everyone goes.

The Continental Club is an Austin institution, the kind of place you go when friends come to Austin for the first time. It typically features some great music from many very talented local and regional artisit. Most of the best experiences I've had at The Continental Club occur during Redd Volkaert's Saturday afternoon sets.

That being said, I'm not too crazy about the bar itself. The cover is typically a little high, even for Austin. The bartenders are some of the rudest and worst in Austin, even my good times here are scared with at least one story about a bartender being an asshole. The drinks are also too expensive for the type of Honkytonk that the Club is.

Great Entertainment... Horrible Service... Overpriced

By far one of my favorite non-DC clubs.  I have only ever seen one act there, Dale Watson (6 times), but this is a fantastic music club just a short walk away from Downtown Austin.  Cheap, good beer and a short hop from the Austin Motel.

Yeah, this is as good as Austin gets - a lil' rough 'round the edges, and just like home at the same time! I've been here a few times in the eleven years I've been coming to visit. I come here alone, throw back a few brewskies, sit back, and listen to the music.

If you come here, you really can't mind the noise and the crowds though :-)

A ritual of mine used to be to listen to an act here and the next day, rush to Waterloo Records to get the CD - or directly buy it from the artist if I can.

I went here one night to see this little blues band break it down for me Austin style.... I really didnt know what I was getting into. I paid my five dollar cover and although I was shocked I was paying a cover, I was glad to hear that it was going to the band. I went with my parents and we stood in the back unsure of what we were supposed to do...that is until some woman came up and complimented my dad on his western shirt and then a group of people came and pulled us to the dance floor... Lots of dancing ensued and we had a blast. After a few drinks, my parents and sister were set to head home to their hotel. The bartender asked if he could call them a cab but I was driving so they were fine anyhow, but it was nice of them to offer my poor 2 drink drunk parents.

Although I'm not too into the music they play all the time, I can say for the occasional stop I have a great time here. I recommend checking it out at least to see what Austin Music nightlife is about.

Ever wonder where the musicians go to hear other musicians? This is the place, from local Miles Zuniga to David Bowie (I am not kidding) have been spotted here catching some live music. Regular favorites are Jon Dee Graham, who played here back in the 60's with his punk band the Skunks, and someone a little newer on the scene, James McMurtry.

The Continental Club is an Austin institution that helped put our fair city on the map as the Live Music Capital of the World. After all, this is where Stevie Ray Vaughn got his start.

I was here several years ago to see Julie and Buddy Miller (Buddy is an outstanding guitar player for Emmylou Harris). During their set Patty Griffin showed up and sang a few songs with them. Amazing!

The venue is quite intimate adding to charm. But it also means you must get there early for the good shows.

I know there are plenty of options in Austin to see live music but you cant beat the Continental Club.  This club is a legend with a calendar full of musicians you may never heard of (depending how music conscious you are) but never disappoint.  Most of the music is blues, folk, country -  but all down and dirty REAL Texas music.  The Continental Club makes you feel like you just happened upon a music jam session with some of the Texas greats!

All in all the bar is a dive, with limited seating but plenty of room to dance - if you drink enough cocktails.  I can't recommend this place enough - if I could go every night and not be exhausted for work the next day I just might.

OK, so this is the first in a flurry of reviews I'm about to write - over the holidays I had some family in town, and the wife (a native of the area) wanted to show them an "Austin-y" time. On 12/28 my bothers and I, along with or wives, pawned our kids off on my parents and went downtown for a night out "sans kids" (to paraphrase Garth Algar).

When asked if they had any preferences on where we went or what we did, one of my brothers said "I don't care, I just want to see some live blues", so we started our evening catching a no cover happy hour performance by The Blues Specialists at the Continental Club.

And really, what else needs to be said?  We get to see a legendary local blues band founded by legendary local blues artists playing in one of the more legendary live music venues in this town (and a venue that they themselves have played countless times)?  Yep.  And it's free?  Yep.  With discounted drinks?  Yep.

Yeah, it's worth checking out.

Waltzing into the Continental Club is like bumping into that "one", old girlfriend I've not seen in years.  Her smell and touch instantly brings back memories of the best sex I ever had.  Unfortunately, I was too young, drunk and high to truly appreciate her back then.

After an evening of drinking and dancing together, I realized it was all my fault. I should have never left this place the way I did.  At least this time around I remembered to say goodbye.

Until we meet again my sweet friend.
