15 reviews for Contesta Rock Hair
One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Talented stylists, good music, free espressos, and good magazines. ;-)
I usually compare getting a haircut with going to the dentist - it's usually something I have to do and want to get over with.
At Contesta, getting a haircut is something to look forward to. The stylists are a couple of guys from Italy - I don't usually mind who I get an appointment with, they all seem to come from the same school of cool, edgy haircuts.
I must have referred over ten friends to this place, and they have all come out of the experience as loyal customers and actually seem to make a grand event of going to get a haircut each time.
Don't be put off by the prices - which aren't to shabby considering you'll have a cut that looks fresh for months afterward (a girl's wash, cut, and dry is about $70).
They're also open from 1PM - 10PM Monday - Saturday. They're closed on Sundays.
Only downside is the parking situation. I've found myself looking for parking near Espanola Way (where they're located) for 20 minutes - rendering me late to my appointments many-a-time.
No other place has swagga like Contesta Rock Hair...and yes, they really do rock!
I travel the land, time and time again just to get to this place, which by the way exudes coolness in the air like it's champagne. I love that everyone seems to be faithful to these Italian "hipsters" (who definitely know how to party) and probably will never go back to just any old salon...(I never did).
For newcomers, it's hidden (in the midst of restaurants), a bit pricey (about $70 for a girls wash and cut), loud and outrageous (bright walls, colors, amazing artwork and music blaring) and the hair cutting style that you're used to is totally different than expected but at the end of it all, you won't be disappointed. These guys do some really tight work.
Everyone is dope and while they might be talking Italian, rocking out to music or drinking while cutting your hair, never fear! You won't be disappointed and if not for the talent of the staff, you'll continue to go back because of the atmosphere in which they have created.
Worth every penny.
An old stylist of mine used to say that there are three types of hair: Uptown, Midtown and Downtown. I am decidedly Midtown and Contesta Rock is definitely Downtown and the two don't mix well.
I'll just never be the girl who can pull off the crazy angled bob and my one experience at Contesta Rock left me cold, but not cool. :-(
Having a hairy Italian guy singing along to Coldplay while cutting your hair was pretty awesome. I was out the door in 25 minutes, possibly the quickest cut I've ever gotten. However not the most meticulous.
Love the atmosphere and music but not worth the wait (usually half an hour of more after your appointment time). I think it was better a few years ago, now the service is lacking.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. Ive been a fan for years and no matter who does my hair I always leave happy. I discovered them right after I called my friend crying because SuperCuts left me looking like a lesbian.
Enzo is doing my hair these days, but I l used to love me some Andrea (male, fine as all hell).
Most of my friends find it a bit pricey, however, I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for.
What you pay for at Contesta is not only the guarantee of a great cut; it's also the attention, atmosphere, and delicious espresso they serve you while waiting.
With that said, some WASH GIRL there once dyed my best friends hair blue, and it looked great for a hot minute, and then that shit faded and looked deep fried. I've never seen that girl working there again.
She obviously wasn't Italian.
Fabio is the best.
I get my hair cut (no blow dry) for $55 and it always looks great.
The music, coffee and the happy hour on Wednesdays help too. But Fabio really knows his stuff.
Love them!!!!
I used to go to Contesta 5 years ago maybe? I haven't been tempted to go back in. I look back at my pictures from the haircuts and hair color I got there... and they haven't stood the test of time.
I do love the decor and everyone was always very Fabuloso.
I'm a former NY-er who got used to being able to have a clipping-choice or two in the NYC. However, in five years of living in Miami Beach/Coconut Grove, I have found only ONE person with the inherent skill, vision, and talent to cut my curly/wavy hair in a manner that ALWAYS leaves me feeling sexier, looking better than I did walking in (by far!), and still looking better a month after the cut--Thank you, Luca! No one else down here can so much get near me with a scissor! I'll choose to continue looking like shit for a month or two rather than opt for the "convenience" of letting someone else near my locks! Luca or Nobody! Molto bene. Unique skills & one-of-a-kind service--and so well-worth the $$.
One word: overrated. People raved about Contesta to me, from their hip cuts and employees to their free drinks...I have been there twice and both times was thoroughly disappointed (and even annoyed).
The employees are all too cool for school, more concerned with chatting with each other and acting awesome than actually listening to what you want. I felt like just another boring customer to them, and the guy barely asked what I wanted, let alone how I wear my hair or what my morning routine is. Further, both times we went they were like "oh we aren't having drinks tonight" which is lame when you advertise it. Finally, we went on the nights where they give discounts (I think Tuesdays) and still it was overpriced.
If it was more affordable, maybe I would have been wiling to put up with it, but as it is I would recommend you save yourself the condescension and money and find another place to get your hair cut.
This place has a very alternative edgy energetic vibe -- you know --- like a rock n' roll kind of place. While I had my hair cut there I saw numerous "Extreme Makeovers" which showed me the amazing amount of talent possesed by the stylists there.
My stylist left the salon but I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a new look. Plus, I loved the fact that I was offered a beer while I waited for my stylist, and then I had champagne while my hair was colored!
Loved it! Loved everything about it. Well except for the parking, but that's SOBE for you!
Mario did a great job with my hair and I'm in LOVE with my new 'bob'. The atmosphere was awesome. Everyone seemed be comfy and free spirited. All the stylist were singing along to the music, like Nirvana and Death Cab and we got free espressos! Oh, and it's just around the corner from Moshi Moshi! I think this place will be my salon for life.
I've been coming to Contesta for a couple years and so have a good handful of my friends both female and male. It's a great staff of friendly little Italian guys who can dance and cut your hair at the same time. It is especially good if you want something trendy, easy and fun. The best thing about the place is that you'll love your hair cut even more a week or two later. Lucas and Enzo are my favorites.
I returned to see Mario for another hair fix-up. It looks great, color and cut both. Less of a to-do this time, but I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. Last time I went my hair was in need of intensive-care-level TLC. I think this last cut chopped off the rest of my damaged ends for good, and now my hair feel much healthier. And I'm still a sucker for the espresso. Oh, $175 for cut/blowdry/highlights/toner. He never asked or told me that the toner would cost extra, or actually break down any of the price points.I don't think it's THAT expensive of a place that they can not tell you what stuff costs -- it's not like "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" level. But I went in with the mindset of 'whatever it takes' (see my recent review of The Haircuttery *cringe*) so I happily slapped down the plastic and handed him a well-deserved tip, but had I not been in such a spendy mood that might've miffed me.

i loooooooove luca! he cut my hair for the two years i lived in miami beach and is just incredible. if you're a tad conservative, don't be put off by the rock hair name - even though they can create some insanely edgy styles if requested, luca was able to give me a totally unique (yet office appropriate) cut that really worked with my thick, naturally wavy hair in the humid MIA. the music is great, stylists and staff are funny. i am still searching chicago for a luca-replacement with no luck. oh, and considering how expensive salons can be in miami, this one's a steal. i paid $70 for a cut and blowout.
