One huge advantage about living in New England is the amount of antiques available. Hell, there might be as many antique shops as coffee shops. I do go to the usual places, but this is my favorite, and it's interesting, because it's such a different format from the sub-leased dealer places around.
Actually, if you have any interest in antiques, DO IT NOW, most places are going under because stock is running low and the economy.
Everyone has a unusual collection, and mine happens to be dishes. I love dishes, Japanese Meiji and before (if I can afford it) and French Limoge, both of which are inspired by my mom, but I do submit, I have my own tastes in each.
Anyway, Consignment has the most interesting supply of Limoge (Havilland, etc.) in New England. 2 times out of 3 visits, I will see something that I will seriously consider. And you know what? This stuff is cheap. For instance, I purchased 8 "Made in Occupied Japan" Noritake dinner plates, which is a J brand of French china, for 9 dollars a plate. That's way cheaper than Crate and Barrel, far more interesting, collectible, and more beautiful. (Made in Occupied Germany is another sub-genre of antiquing.)
You will occasionally see a whole 90 piece set for sale for less than 200 dollars. Maybe you might think it's your grandmother's china, and it is, but I dine on it everyday at my place, and I feel I'm eating off art. Everything tastes better.
The jewelry is pretty cool too, but I am not so up on that.
Full of beautiful antique furniture and a fair amount of jewelry also. Very nice owners also.
Jammed full of good stuff.
This place is a few minutes up Highland Ave, a tiiiiny ways outside Davis Square, across from Kickass Cupcakes and it's a great place to go if you want to find a unique piece of jewelry. At least that's why I go there, but they've got a ton of other things....the type of things that a consignment shop would have.
The jewelry though, that's what I'm here to talk about. It's quality, unique, frequently antique, and chosen with care. I mean, it seems to me they don't accept just ANY second-hand jewelry; it's gotta have character.
The women who work there are really helpful and they stayed open a little late, when I came in five minutes before close yesterday, so I could find what I wanted to buy. I thought that was nice. Oh, and the prices are really good.
You can still bring things in to be sold on consignment here -- a forgotten service in the Ebay era. We've sold a few unwanted gifts and family "heirlooms" here without dealing with shipping or the unknowns of cyberspace!
Totally packed with antique furniture, lamps, ceramics, artwork and vintage jewelry. Lots of expensive items but also cheaper ones that would make good gifts or finds for your apartment. Pretty large and tightly packed in so be careful when you walk! You might not over some expensive ceramics.
love it: full of good, reasonably-priced stuff and the owners/shopkeepers were really nice too.
