We kill nights and eat them for breakfast. Wherever we go and whatever we do, we know how to do it right.
Set out to have fun, any venue and any event is just that much more enjoyable with good company. We went to the Yankee with the intent of seeing some live music and good times. Only $6 for the show and a few rounds, it was a fun and inexpensive place to see some live entertainment.
A small stage, fun crowd, lively music and some great swing dancing by a couple - set the night. Drinking Bourbon with Speakeasy Chasers, I was in for a night of having fun, drinking and enjoying the show. Hurray for the Connecticut Yankee.Listed in: Cocktails, Dahling?

Sunday brunch? An hour wait? Creepy men stalking the streets in shiny vests?! We should've come straight here had we known about this place. But thanks to the underage in our group, the guys and I happened upon this pub in our search for a bar that accepted kids to get our midday drinks on.
The outside patio on a balmy Frisco day was the perfect answer. The waitresses were very attentive and quick in service, unlike the pig palace we were just at. Though they didn't have Grey Goose on hand, Ketel One was just as good. I had two to quench my thirst. The guys had mimosas and beer. The kid, Arnold Palmer to make him feel all growed up.
The next time we find ourselves in the area, I think we'll return. Perfect way to spend a midday with good friends and good booze. -

Read the menu - its funny. The apps were generous and damn good. The nachos were perfectly goey and cheesy and the hot wings tasted like hot wings! I am not a fan of honey glazed hot wings and other lame garlic spin-offs of hot wings. I just want a wing with that spicy cliche hot-wing sauce!!
There's beer isn't dive-priced but the environment is great and I love a bar that is all dark wood. Sports on the tv's and a cold beer out in the middle of Lower Potrero...fun times. -

aged and fresh ugly blue corner...local sports bar restaurant...sports memorabilia and "junk" decorations...casual environment...limited selection of $five pints..cheaper pbr, bud and domestic...taking a guinness $five and another...served to the table...taking a larry birdger burger medium rare...finding burger quite large and surprisingly cooked to an exact medium-rare on a busy sf 49er vs. ny giants sunday...standard large filling burger and side of coleslaw...containing strong creamy mayonnaise and mustard flavors...extremely little tang, sweet or salt...side of fries and finding a heavy crispy coating...harder fries if liking...watching, eating and drinking...wobbling tables and seated anywhere possible...$fifteen liter of house red or white wine the cheapest drinking option and taking near end...house red quite sweet and fruity...easy drinking...crowded sunday with an unfortunate 49ers loss to the giants 20 - 17 in overtime...

This place offers decent food and drinks and has a nice spacious patio. A reliable spot for lunch when the weather is good, particularly for groups of 10+.

I live three blocks away from this place, have had many delightful times here, and love their Nicoise Salad. But the reason I am writing this review today? I left my phone on the table when I left after lunch, deep in conversation with a friend, and was almost all the way home before the waiter who was trying to return it finally caught up with me. Seriously. How nice is that?

I enjoyed this experience!! Quite a few of us came here looking for some lunch and fun. I loved the outside patio (although you cant smoke) This location is in a warmer part of the city so the sun was abundant!! Between all of us we tried several dishes. The pork Sandwich was good (not to dry or saucy). The Wings were ok, but i have a thing about wings tasting like Tabasco. The chicken strips were more fried in a Panko, and was very good, but kinda small. The taco salad was order and it was LARGE(worth the money). Other salads were order and all were good size and flavor.
There was a Margarita that everyone keep ordering of the special drink menu, they were done nicely. I will say that I ordered the Bloody Mary, and hated it. It was too peppery, too spicy, not enough vodka and frankly a disappointment.
ALL-N-ALL: I would go back, great for large parties, food was de-lish and not too expensive, and the Patio in itself was worth the trip!! -

Being fresh from Connecticut, and living in Potrero Hill I decided I had to at least check this place out. Since then I've been back with groups of friends several times, for it's nearby convenience. It's nothing fantastic, but its a decent dive bar to watch a sports game or one of the many good live shows they have.
Nice little back porch area with plenty of foliage and some big heaters. The service is usually good, but being outside we were often forgotten about.
Good beer selection, typical bar food with average/above average prices. Haven't had food there very often, but when I do it's just okay, not quite worth the cost. If they had excellent food, this place would easily be a favorite local bar. -

I have to go here once a month for their Cobb Salad. I love it. The people are friendly, the setting is "neighborhood bar". On those nice Potrero days, sitting outside on the patio is great. BTW - fried are also really good and my partner loves their burgers.

Uhhh, YES PLEASE!
This place is great. Awesome beer, tasty food, friendly staff, and great patrons. Multiple televisions with local sports on.
I hit this place up an hour before a show at Bottom of the Hill for some food and brews. I had a cup of soup and a local brew, both of which were top notch.
I will return when in the area. -

My office is a few blocks away from this establishment, and I've dropped by a couple of times. I'd recommend, if just for the fries. Wow! I think they salt them with fairy dust or something. They're that yummy.
Aside from that, I can report that the beers were tasty (as expected, not magically tasty) and the service was very good. I have not experienced a live show or sports-oriented event, so perhaps I'll wander over when the opportunity arises. -

I asked the bartender for our check as we were rushing to get to Anchor Steam for a tour.
"You're in a hurry? Well what do you expect when you come in with 10 people?"
WTF? Does this place NOT want our money? There are plenty of other places to eat.
The bartender then proceeded to add up our check, in his head. Including the SF Health Tax (5%!?) and tax. I waited around for him to finish.
When I looked it over to make sure it was ok, the waitress pointed "there's a calculator over there"
Screw this place. My sandwich was good. But you don't need to be treated this way. Go elsewhere. -

being from New England, I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this place.. Truly, one of the most unique bars in the City. If you like really good pub food and consistently GREAT live music, this place will not disappoint.
Fritz, the owner, is one of the nicest guys around. He has a great philosophy for booking music- let the band keep 100% of the door. This is unheard of. While the Yankee is know primarily is an eating/drinking spot, it doubles as one of the coolest music venues in the city. The staff won;t hesitate to call someone out on being a douche bag, but that's part of the charm. Do yourself a favor and check this place out for sports games, stay for the food and live entertainment. -
Review from Todd C.
Purported Red Sox bar. I went a few times a couple years ago and, ok, sure it's wall-papered with Boston memorabilia but do you know what happened to me when I was watching a Red Sox game there some few Augusts ago? Besides the fact that I was shunted into the backroom (whatever) because most of their troglodytic patrons were football fans. What happened was that a waitress came up to our table and asked that I not cheer so loudly, that I "keep it down," to use her parlance. And why did I have to keep it down while cheering for the Red Sox in what purports to be a Red Sox bar? Because a Yankees fan asked her to. I'm not making this up. Fuck this place.

I love me a good dive bar! Connecticut Yankee is right near my office, so some coworkers and I decided to try it out. It's quite a comfy environment with fun, quirky staff. Totally will be back!
Drinks: They had an array of beers including Anchor Steam, Blue Moon, Stella, Fat Tire, and some IPA....you get the gist...there's something for everyone.
Food: The hot wings were really not as tasty as toro e.'s picture led me to believe, but they were still yummy. The fries were the best, but the onion rings were string-style rather than the thick meaty ones.
I'll be back!!! -

Good place for a drink and a burger. Very friendly staff, the food was pretty good (bar food), and it was a fun crowd.
Will definitely be back, although with a Lakers jersey rooting against the Celtics!! -

Well yet again yelp has removed a review of mine. I think it was because I was honest and pointed out the type of people that come here and the quality of service. I tried to be honest but fair in my previous review but now I'm not going to be diplomatic.
the food is crap. 18 dollars for a breaded piece of chicken. The rest of the dinner food is similarly priced. The entire menu is overpriced and the quality has gone downhill over the years.
the service at night is crap, the bartenders are rude and "out of it" and the servers don't pay attention to orders or requests. it's crapshoot whether you will actually get your drinks before your food. the folks watching games are very loud and the music when they have it is very loud so this isn't a place to talk to your friends.
There are people smoking pot and cigs outside the doors all the time and it smells like it inside too.
the one star is for brunch on the patio during the weekend. it's nothing special but it's nice to be outside and eating brunch.Listed in: Potrero Hill

This is a great neighborhood pub, and the food is actually really good. I work nearby and it's a perfect place to unwind with a few drinks, have the occasional dinner, and/or watch a game. One of the regular bartenders (i.e., Nic) is one of my favorite bartenders in the city. After a tough day it's great to come somewhere where you can park and have a friendly face that you know will take great care of you.

I used to like this place. Nice old school feeling, good sports bar, decent (order simple stuff and you won't go too wrong) food, good beers on tap. The questionable thing has always been the service, it's hit or miss. They have some nice folks, and they have some old coots that think they can bully a female or someone who "isn't like them". I've been barked at on more than one occaision by bartenders there. (as though they're doing me a favor by serving me), and last night REALLY pissed me off to the point where I decided to only have one beer, no food and not go back. Not only was the bartender rude when I asked "do you have Anchor Christmas beer?" (they don't) but then when I ordered a regular Anchor on tap, he opens the cooler, takes out a pint that has been sitting there and serves it to me. I give him a look, and he says "I poured it 2 minutes ago". Then he puts one measly squirt of fresh beer in and demands $5. I said. "really?" He repeats "I poured it 2 minutes ago - $5 please" I paid him and drank the beer but I drink alot of beer and it was indeed kind of flat. I didn't want to make an issue because I was there with a friend celebrating her birthday so I drank my quasi-flat beer and didn't tip at all. Apparently the birthday girl's nachos were lousy as well, apparently they scrimped on the cheese. Epic fail...

A neighborhood sports bar/restaurant with outdoor seating.
Hubby said he had lunch here with co-workers and was good so we ended here for dinner. The dining room was empty but there were some patrons at the bar and outside. We had our choice of tables. Friendly service. Menu has interesting reference to sports legends.
What we had:
OJ's buffalo wings - 8 pieces - $8.25 - very good. Hot, crispy and not too much vinegar in sauce - 4 wings and 4 drumettes.
The "Larry" Birdger - $9- 7 oz burger w/ choice of cheese (chedder, swiss or jack) served w/ grilled onions and "Yankee" fries. $1.50 for bacon - ok, greasy and medium instead of medium rare. Fries are very crispy and yummy.
The Pee-Wee Herman - Carolina pulled pork sandwich w/ homemade bbq sauce and slaw, - $8.75 - very messy, bun melted, pork has a bit of old oil taste. bbq sauce very vinegary.
Had a taste of oj black bean soup - good so maybe gumbo is a contender.
About 10-12 drafts - $5/pint. -

Food is disgusting here. Don't waste your money on it. Pub food doesn't have to always be bad.
As a bar, it's a fine atmoshere for watching a sporting event, especially if a New England or Boston area team is involved. -

Fun place, cool atmosphere, great food.
I had a Tuna melt sandwich with a black bean soup side and scarfed it down, it was delicious. I really liked the outside patio area with big communal tables, it gives the place a really cool atmosphere. -

Why is the food here so below par?!?!
Why do I keep coming here?!?!
My boyfriend and I were in salad craving mode from eating so damn much the last couple of nights. It was Sunday 3pm and it seemed like every reasonable place that served large salads was closed in the mission, potrero area. We really wanted to go to the brickhouse was it was shutting down, so we tried Axis cafe, closed, and decided that Connecticut Yankee was open.
Both got the Tuna/Nicoise salad, which should be renamed. For anyway who has had a Nicoise salad from France. This one was a fail. First off broccoli? WTF. Then one slice of raw potato? WTF.
The tuna was seared and over done and the dressing was balsamic greaseball.
Salads are not difficult to make and although I ate it all because I was starving. This one was a total fail.
Needless to say, the outdoor seating area was really quite cute.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Service.. or sorry, lack there of. Stinky, tacky place, but perfect for a sports bar/live music. Food is super marginal. Great place to belly up and watch some tv by yourself. This place could be so much more. Sleepy, sad little place that could be a fun spot. No motivation for a better establishment. But I guess it is what it is. You decide.

I'm fan because it's divey and it makes me feel like I stepped back in time to a old sailors saloon. The Giants are usually playing on the big screen which lets me know I'm in the modern era, because I don't think pirates had HD TV. The food is ok, it's not gourmet for sure. Yet, it's good if you want a cheeseburger or fries before a concert at The Bottom of the Hill. Good drinks and a salty atmosphere. Aye matey!

Fritz and the gang do the "dive / sports" bar thing as good as it gets...
Throw in some decent jam bands at night, and all is well!

Great spot to hit during lunch on a work day!
I loved their pulled pork sammich and with it a glass of Fat Tire Amber Ale.
They were also very accommodating of our large group of 10 peeps and we all had a great time.

Today, I walked in to the Connecticut Yankee and said two sentences, "I am having a shitty day, and you make really good BBQ sandwiches. Will you make me one?"
One lemonade, excellent pulled pork w/ slaw, and hot fudge brownie sundae later, the server said two sentences back to me, "We're buying your lunch. It's in the hopes that it makes your day better."
I am nine months pregnant and about a week from giving birth. I post this as a review, as a testament to the goodness of mankind. And, most importantly, as an an acknowledgement of the surprising generosity and kindness of the people who work at and run this neighborhood place. I am in awe.
Go to the Yankee. Buy their food. See their bands. Load up on their beer. And be sure to tip the staff really, really well -- they deserve it. -

This is a lunch review.
Don't come here for lunch, if you're in the neighborhood the Ramp is much better. We ordered some chips and salsa and the chips were slightly stale and not freshly fried like at the Ramp. I ordered a burger and it was so greasy it soaked through the bottom half of the bun. They must use really fatty beef. Also, all the meat was cooked medium-well to well-done, regardless of what you asked for.
The only good part of my dish was the fries, which are super crunchy on the outside. -
Review from Eliza D.
Turkey burgers are hard to screw up yet it's pretty hard to find a good one. They have a great one called the "Larry Birdger" a delicious big patty with grilled onions and your choice of cheese! My friend had the "Fowl Play" a breaded chicken breast that came with yummy garlic mash and green beans. We ate off each others plates and boy was it tasty.
The entire staff is awesome and super friendly. It was fairly packed with patrons eating and drinking while watching the game on one of the many TV's. I love the history behind this place and it really does have that New England feel. I suspect natives would enjoy it as much as I did. -

First of all, I am not a fan of baseball or football, so skip this review if you are looking for recommendations on watching your favorite AMERICAN sport at a local bar. I came to watch tennis on a Sunday full of football fans, and low and behold my girlfriend and I were treated to a private corner with the TV tuned into the Australian Open.
I called ahead, and Ed the bartender was gracious and accommodating.
I did not have such luck at several bars in town. Due to the football season, most bars only show what the majority, i.e.men, like.
The food is fair, for a bar. We liked the key lime pie. I gave CY 4 stars for being kind to tennis fans. -

When you live in the Lower Potrero, there aren't that many places to walk to to get a drink and a snack. Particularly not a chill place with a back patio.
I went here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. The service was sassy, the drinks were refreshing, and it wasn't crowded, not in the least.
The gals who work there are young and brash and I like that. -

* Review for their Hot Wings ONLY*
I wonder if part of proceeds from Connecticut Yankee's 'O.J.'s Buffalo Wings' ($8.25) now goes to helping O.J. recover his photos? Their menu could not keep up with O.J.'s criminal activities as it still read that the proceeds goes to 'helping O.J. find the real killers.'
Ignoring the name, I enjoyed their O.J.'s Buffalo Wings. It was HOT HOT HOT - which went well with their beer. I wished there was slight sweetness, but that's okay. In the city lacking serious Buffalo Wing joints, I was satisfied with their version. Most importantly, it was NOT breaded.
DECOR: This establishment appears to be more of a bar from the outside, but it's actually more of a restaurant when you walk in. They have numerous tables with a server taking orders. They even have a nice size outdoor patio seating. Menu has pretty much everything you need for lunch, brunch, or dinner.
HISTORY: From the reading on the back of their menu, you'll learn that this is a quite historic bar/restaurant, which started in 1907 (under a different name).
On my next visit, I'll try Barry Bonds Super Star and Ty Cobb Salad. -
Review from Nish N.
This is what I call a solid neighborhood bar, albeit a sports one. Very friendly staff make this a nice place for a casual meal. Nothing fancy necessarily, but think tasty wings, burgers, that sort of thing, and all with like The Larry Birdger and the Ty Cobb Salad. On that note their salads are really actually pretty decent, and I've heard wonderful things about their chowder, good for cold nights like we're in right now.
The bar is slathered in sports paraphernalia and on game days, the place is pretty slammed. I've come with my sporty friends and watched many a game here.
When the weather permits, their outside patio is a cool way to while away the hours, and their solid beer selection (they carry Lagunitas and Poppy Jasper, two of my favorites) will please most.
For better Potrero Hill, this is definitely a great bar, and actually one of the only ones for the 30-something set. I've also started my nights before a show at Bottom of the Hill here, not a bad way to fuel up for a big night of music.
Oh, I like the fact that the name Connecticut Yankee gives off a certain New England vibe while also indicating the cross street that the bar is on. -

One star for Celtic's win over Lakers and one more for the screaming fans in the back room. ( It's us!)
The food is not what you should come here for especially the $8.95 ( Four piece chicken strips ). The burger is OK, but not worth $11 bucks. I'm not cheap as many of you may know. I enjoy a great meal and a great fucking fantastic parties. Many of you should know how I do it, even the food is gourmet.
I came here with some friends after the Haight St. Faire, thinking lots of Celtics fans and lots of people. The place was dead. The only people that made this bar poppin, I think was us. I think if it was my bar, I would hire more attentive servers and better quality of food. I would also serve happy hour specials for Boston area fans. Come on, it's a celebration of 21 plus years since they last won the title.
Go Celtics! BEAT LA! -

I was here on Sunday for the back to back Pats/Sox extravaganza. The place was pretty empty when I first got there since most Niners and Pats fans were probably at the game. Lots of TVs and they had the Pats/Niners game on several of them, the TB/White Sox playoff game as well as the Denver game for the lone fan there. I was quite enjoying myself (although they were out of a few types of beer...ie Sam Adams light!?!?)
Eventually I ordered food just before the Sox game started and the burger was good. The fries were just meh. My companions order the hot wings and they were delish...except for the blue cheese which was on the watery side. The service was efficient...I wouldn't say it was rude like some others have mentioned.
Just as we were finishing, this place got bombed with all the Pats fans coming from the game to watch the Red Sox. Now *most* of these people were already trashed before they got there...can you see where this is going...?
It got so crowded and people started getting biosterous and impatient with the staff which was COMPLETELY overwhelmed at this point. Lots of complaining and lots of whining. Needless to say, I felt very sorry for them and can't take anything away for that.
I had great expectations for this Red Sox bar, but the comraderie and the mutual love for the Sox was just missing on this night. I'm used to hugging and high fiving complete strangers...just cuz we all love the Sox. The crowd was *SO* not like that. I was disappointed to say the least. I will give this place another shot...on a day when it's not full of already trashed Pats fans. -

I tend to not be confused by a lot of things but the Connecticut Yankee is one of them. I have this love hate relationship with this place that makes me really ambivalent about it when my co-workers suggest going there for lunch.
LOVE
It's the closest place to my work where I can have a beer or two during lunch to take the edge off.
HATE
The food here really isn't that great. I've come here a lot for lunch and none of the sandwiches really excite me. It's always a search for "well, that doesn't sound so bad..." I think the dinner menu is slightly better than lunch because they server chicken fingers and buffalo wings at dinner (please do this for lunch!!!)
LOVE
The fries are really golden and crispy. The small(er) Cobb Salad isn't a bad deal.
HATE
Sometimes they give you bread, sometimes they don't. I still haven't figured it out.
LOVE
Tons of TVs to watch sports on. The owner likes to play ping pong DVDs.
HATE
Me and my co-worker are the only chinks in the place and the owner asks us which ping pong DVD we want to see. What? Just because I came in with tiny shorts and a ping pong paddle doesn't mean I know ANYTHING about ping pong (though I hear it should be called table tennis).
LOVE
The outdoor area is pretty nice to enjoy a few drinks (and a cigarette) on a sunny day during lunch or after work.
HATE
The service is hit or miss. Love it or hate it.

Mmmm beer. Pilsner Urquell on tap, which is never a bad choice.
The bar food was okay. There's some benches on the patio which are pretty cool. I sat with some nice people . I must dock a star for being a New England establishment though. I bleed Yankee Blue and seeing the Red Sox World Series newspapers broke my heart a little.
Either way, if you're looking for a cool place to hang out around Potrero Hill, it's hard to go wrong with Connecticut Yankee.
