9 reviews for Connecticut Avenue Wine & Liquor Deli
My local liquor store. This place is great! The staff is very knowledgeable about beer and wine, and will special order hard-to-find items for you. They have occasional wine tastings, which are fun to stumble on while beverage shopping for a Saturday night party.
The place is pretty tightly packed, so you often have to squeeze past other customers to shop here, but given the great location and huge selection, it's no surprise. (Also -- I haven't tried the sandwiches, but I've heard they're pretty good.)
3.5 stars
There used to be a long hair guy here -- he was awesome -- totally knew his wine -- and was very nice as well. 1 part deadhead and 1 part vinophile make an interesting combo.
I think the 2001 Shirvington Shiraz was 99 points -- you couldn't get it anywhere except for brookers that charged 3x retail (at a minimum) -- well he got 3 bottles and sold one to me at retail.
The place is the size of a closet -- and his selection per square inch was probably the best in DC. Since he left the place's selection has suffered a little, but it is still one of the best places in the neighborhood to pick up a bottle of wine.
If you're looking for a good bottle of wine that is still affordable, then Connecticut Ave Liquors is the place. I stopped in this place one day after work looking to get some beer and I ended up discovering a liquor store with a great wine selection.
The obvious main drawback is the severe lack of space in Connecticut Ave Liquors. It becomes very annoying when you are trying to pick out a bottle of wine and still keep out of everyone's way. There was this European guy that worked there, I think he had a German accent who was very helpful and recommended me some great, affordable Austrian and Itailian wines. They have a nice mix of domestic and imported beer too for such a small place.
I've been going to this gem of a shop for the past several years. Everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. I get great recommendations that are always in my price range and never with an up-sell. They have tastings on Thursday evenings where a couple bottles are cracked open and thirsty neighbors discover new favorites. The selection is not limited to wine, they also carry a great variety of beer and hard-to-find sake and plum wine. They have everything you need and the expertise to help you find it.
I have sparingly gone into CT Ave Liquors to pick up a few things when in a rush & in the neighborhood. I try to avoid the place, mainly because it's terribly inconvenient to attempt to squeak through without knocking bottles over, running into other customers, or tripping over who-knows-what. The rudeness of the staff is pretty incomparable - I think this must be a place where the customer is always wrong. If you're in the Dupont area and need wine or artisanal liquors, go to Best Cellars instead. If you need beer or unique items, try Cairo on 17th. Shopping for alcohol should be fun! Not make you feel like an unwanted nuisance for trying to patronize a store.
I can't comment on whether this place's a good deal (for booze); I just don't know. What I know is that the staff is friendly, ready to help (but not overbearing- I hate it when I'm being offered help every 2 minutes, if I need help I'll ask for it), and that they always have the wines I like in stock.
Awesome place! They special ordered beer for me that isn't sold anywhere in this area! They even gave me the option to only buy one 6 pack even though they had to order the whole case! However since its soo delicious I bought the entire case.
This is your one stop Dupont shop for all your wine, meats and specialty teas. Step inside and immerse yourself in the aroma of sliced beef while shopping for "Asian Gourmet Tea." Take awhile to browse the vast racks of wine. For those who prefer beer, get a load of the variety of Microbrews! They have Dogfish ales of all varieties, and several brands of Nut Brown Ale. These guys have a great location on Connecticutt and Q, and I have been a frequent visitor here for years, dating back to my Georgetown days when they first accepted my fake ID
I will never go back here. The staff was so rude to my friend and I. There are too many other shops in the area to choose from that have better prices and nice employees.
